let's go back to the Bor game senior night very special but tell me how you felt after it was done to lead all that time give up the lead and then just immediately dig your heels in and go yeah our guys have been resilient all year we've played in a lot of games where we've gotten behind or had to take a pretty good punch and still found a way to win there's two things at play one would be just playing at home in the United Supermarkets Arena I mean the building has a way of just taking life to the game and giving us breath when we feel like that it got knocked out of us and then the other was I loved our our rebounding and our defense you know we had moments to start the middle of the second half where we lost our Edge and our ability to be physical guarding the ball but the last five minutes of the game I thought we were really physical guarding the ball and and and tightened up and we're able to finish the game take me through a little bit of this here because now when you get in foul trouble and you have players that can attack like Baylor can I mean these guys are experts at attacking the goal and getting downhill and the outside shot wasn't working that well for him anyway now that you can't take charges how much more difficult is it to stop guys from attacking the rim when they have foul trouble yeah ultimately you have to decide where you going to where you going to give up angles and you have to decide if you're going to force teams which places are you going to force them and when you could force them into a charge it was the double negative right I mean it was you get the ball back and it's a turnover but it's a foul and usually a really good player and eliminating that part of it then that's where size and length have such an important value to the game um and for us just guarding that middle ball screen we've done a better job of multiple guys being involved in how you do it and I think that's where we're going to be at our best it's like how collectively active can we be and if you've looked at our last four or five games our activity level in help has gone up dramatically and our tension to where we want the ball going I think has really gotten specific so then we can anticipate where the help's coming from and that's where the charge was beneficial but I think our team's finally now adjusting and unfortunately it's taking us a little while hey I think it will take a while for a lot of people again when you're sitting there with four fouls and you got to make a decision on you know whether to set up in front of somebody or not but that even as that game went along I thought you got better like early on in the second half they were having some some uh some success and then that started to close down and you know of course that's when the crowd was hyped too and it was harder to to blow the whistle for the referees talking to head coach Grant McCaslin give me Robert Jennings Journey from when you first saw him to now and if you've seen the kind of improvement that I think I've seen yeah you know Rob's effort and energy to play this game has always been at the highest level it's where is he most effective and then how does it fit within the the rest of the team I mean think that's where you have to find your balance and experience helps you understand how it fits and and to his credit I think he's aired on the side of his energy being a part bigger part of it and then if he got the basketball it was like how am I going to do this and the best way to learn is to to play he just didn't get to play a lot early CU he was injured early in the season so I'll tell you what he's done is he's really start he's starting to understand like all the angles all the reasons why you play a certain way defensively you play a certain way offensively and he's seeing it from the perspective of the other four players and that's hard to do when you're just trying to play hard and get on the floor and you need the time on the floor to see how it all fits and Rob's understanding of how it all fits together is really coming together at the right time and you can tell he's playing with confidence and he's playing as to what strengths he has that helped benefit our team winning yeah I thought early he played like a mad man he was doing some things that we hadn't seen him do you know when I was a kid when I was a kid uh I always wanted to just come and watch this tournament um and I didn't get to come to this tournament till I was 38 years old have you thought about what it's going to be like to be a head coach because you've been in this building as a player and as an assistant coach but have you thought about what it's going to be like to be an HC in it yeah no honestly I haven't it's been it's been a a remarkable journey and I think those enjoyable experiences I'll be able to look back on at a later date but really just the focus has been on how does our team get better you know how do we win this basketball game like what what gives us the The Edge to compete and to be ready to go from the start cuz you know this BYU team they don't take long I mean it can go from 10 like it did to US 10 nothing you know before the first media so I mean I think all that hey this is an awesome experience goes out the window when you when you know what's what you're playing against and and I'm excited about our team cuz were on the air when the basketball world stopped in 2020 we were in our pregame show we saw them putting the the stools up we started seeing reports of uh other other tournaments closing and so I broke into the interview to break the news that um is we're going home we're headed home uh one of the worst days ever so I'm so thrilled that we get to play this game today and I'll never take basketball for granted again I just wanted to tell you that what do you remember about the first time with BYU you already said they sprinted out tin zip how'd you get back in it well it it it takes a a real energy to fight them every position possession because they put you in so many different situations I mean it's unlike any team that we play in our conference it's unlike any team that we played this year outside of Northern Iowa and we did have that reference point just having um Devin Cambridge in the game changed it but for us uh the biggest thing was Hey how do you how do you compete on every possession and how do you have more activity uh defensively early and you can't wait and react to what they do you have to you have to anticipate it and be involved in it quickly physically so it seems like they want you to run around Khalifa at the top almost every possession is that something that that they do uh as much as it feels like they do yeah no doubt I mean you know both those forwards present different problems I mean they differently but definitely the more they can get you higher away from the basket against with Khalifa then the more they can open up back door opportunities which sucks the defense in and then they're making wide open threes and that's how they got us I they made a few at the top but most of them were just in rotations after they got us on our heels back cutting us and we got too high around them and and give them credit because it's something that until you get out there and go through it our guys finally figured it out but at the beginning it's different pace is there a Princeton blend in there H it's got some I mean but the Princeton blend is more inside the you know they kind of more elbow action to it I can see but they've they've got similar principles to it right D Hall seems to me to be a big problem take me through him and what his strengths are yeah I mean a ton of respect for him it feels like when he's shooting the basketball and he's aggressive in the middle of the floor they've got a completely different element to their team and um I love his on ball defense uh I love his competitiveness and I thought Joe tant the last 10 minutes of that game just really got after him and you know you could see Joe's composure and experience of playing in our league really was instrumental in US winning the basketball game late and the more we can limit his opportunities offensively the better it we'll be pop went for 32 against him last time he had 11 field goals I think his second best is nine field goals what do you think gave him that the ability to to go crazy like he did yeah well we started the second half and ran in action and got him a three and caught it in Rhythm and they didn't defend it quite what the way they needed to and then he got going in transition and that that has to do with us getting stops I mean we can play defense and create opportunity where we're running our team is really dangerous and that's when we're at our best our team's good in half court we're we're efficient enough that we if we get in half court games we can win them but we can stretch leads if we can get out and transition and that's what happened the other day against Baylor I mean we got stops and made a bunch of Threes And then all of a sudden the game's over kwins were things of beauty man I mean when when our guys are in Rhythm on the catch I honestly just I don't think we miss that first one that he hit it looked like it looked like he had a hand right where the ball released and I I honestly was a little surp I'm not surprised everyone it goes in but I just thought that one was Ed so well and then to we we can hear the rims and when it hit like that boy and the crowd went crazy it was a big time moment and it lit everything up I do this in this very generic question at the end Tech wins if uh ultimately if we can find ways to get stops and playing transition you know and and I don't mean just in a generic term I mean how well are we active and anticipating and not behind the more you get behind against their offense the more difficult it is to defend them so how can we actively be engaged and make them make difficult shots and if we do that for 40 minutes we'll we'll we'll have a chance to win the basketball game thanks coach for all the time through the year let's do it again
