[Music] from our studios in New York City this is Charlie Rose the news in Washington this week is dominated by missiles McConnell and manior despite the crisis over North Korea president Trump found time to call out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell over the failure to pass health care and the president's lawyer reportedly accused special counsel Robert Mueller of quote a gross abuse of the judicial process this after the FBI searched the home of the former campaign chairman for Trump uh presidential effort Paul maniford joining me now for some perspective on all of this is the host of Face the Nation John Dickerson of CBS News John uh welcome to the program great to see you than you Charlie it's always great to be with you let's start with North Korea uh the president seems to be dialing up uh this confrontation with North Korea what do we understand about it well it's one foot on the gas and one foot on the break it feels like with this Administration you got the president as you say dialing up again uh on Thursday saying that maybe his his remarks on Tuesday weren't uh incendiary enough where he uh threatened North Korea and said if they threaten the United States again they will see fire and fury uh the likes of which the world has never seen an extraordinary thing to say on almost the 702nd anniversary to the day of the bombing in Nagasaki any comment on the report North Korea yourability North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen he has been very threatening uh Beyond a normal statement and as I said they will be met with fire Fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before thank you so now the president said today well maybe his rhetoric wasn't Tough Enough on the other hand when you talk to Administration officials uh involved in the delicate North Korea question uh they are going in the opposite direction I mean Secretary of State Tillerson said people can sleep soundly not to pay attention to the rhetoric uh Source in the administration I was talking to today uh was basically acting as if the president had not said anything and was kind of continuing along a path with North Korea which looks much more traditional which is to say you've saw the UN sanctions over the weekend put pressure on North Korea with sanctions and then you saw Secretary of State Tillerson last week say to North Korea look we're not interested in regime change we're not going to attack you kind of dialing down uh the the rhetoric so that seems to be the message you get from everybody but the president how about the Secretary of Defense well the Secretary of Def defense Mattis uh basically when asked about the president's remarks said look the president to
