80s but increasing smoke I'm Matt Johnson 59 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios time for KSL's top National stories from ABC News I'm Derek Dennis a highlevel meeting between US National American people after the meeting both countries promoted unity and cooperation in securing world peace in the presidential race heavy campaigning today among the candidates Democrat kamla Harris and her running mate Tim Walls continue their bus tour in Georgia Trump holds a town hall in Wisconsin amid controversy over his visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday that's being called an illegal campaign photo op B's head Deli me linked to a deadly leria outbreak Nationwide not people have died 57 others and 18 states are sick the CDC warning customers may still have tainted meat in $32,000 depending on the airline some say they're struggling to feed their families United Airlines says we remain eager to reach an agreement to be clear there is no work stoppage or labor disruption ABC's ran alley United says talks are ongoing you're listening to ABC News let's go in depth now the Trump campaign is facing criticism after posting a campaign video from Arlington National Cemetery Cemetery officials said say they were specifically asked not to take photos or videos ABC News National correspondent Steven poroy joins me live what happened here Stephen well this happened Monday Manda as uh the Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery and he participated in a reath lang ceremony to honor the 13 service members who were killed at the abig gate attack in cabal Afghanistan during the disastrous chaotic us pull out from that Country and what happened afterwards is the subject of controversy because it seems that Trump and several of his campaign AIDS went to section 60 which is the part of Arlington National Cemetery where the nation's most recent War dead are buried and according to reports there was some sort of Confrontation between an Arlington Cemetery official and members of the Trump campaign because the official was trying to enforce the rule that prohibits campaign activities in including photography at graves sites and the Trump campaign staffers apparently pushed right past this official and took the video that has been released on TiK ToK by the Trump campaign uh there were witnesses to this altercation it has been confirmed by the Army as an incident there was a report apparently filed and yesterday it was reported by the New York Times that the official from the cemetery who tried to prevent the Trump staffers from moving forward has decided not to press charges for fear that she might face retaliation from Trump supporters there's one other element to this and that is the response from JD Vance the former president's running mate who yesterday at a stop in Erie Pennsylvania was asked about this now he defended the presence of trump campaign AIDS at Arlington despite the apparent objections of cemetery officials he said quote they were invited to have a photographer there now the Army points to the law prohibiting election related activities at National cemeteries but Vance had this to say about Harris kamla Harris is so asleep at the wheel that she won't even do an investigation into what happened and she wants to yell at Donald Trump because he showed up she can she can go to hell the running mate there of former president Trump responding to the suggestion that uh something was untour here and you heard what Vance had to say uh the bottom line is it's a an it's a back and forth and what Trump campaign AIDS have said they would do which they have not yet done is release video that they say they have of this altercation you know so many of our listeners I'm sure like I like I have have been to Arlington and taken pictures of our families is it so it's specifically when it's a campaign that they're not allowed to take pictures well there's a rule with respect to media on the campus of Arlington Cemetery that they have to be escorted by military officials and take photographs with permission particularly permission of the family members uh the concern here is that parent concern here is that Trump campaign AIDS were taking videos of trump and pictures of trump posing with family members it's one thing for the family members who were present to Grant permission but there are other family members of those who died at Arlington and are buried there uh whose headstones were photographed in this who are objecting and they say that their rights have been violated interesting Stephen thank you uh ABC News National correspondent Steven pornoy with us on the in-depth at 15 and 45 let's get another look now at tra ific weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to in 18 states are sick this is ABC News let's go in depth now the FBI is releasing more details of the investigation into the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump ABC News crime and terrorism analyst Brad Garrett joins us live what are we learning here Brad so they talk a bit about the number of searches that uh the shooter did his in other words his online activity some of this was released previously Amanda like you know how far was Oswalt from President Kennedy and but you know additional things like where was h president Trump where was he going to speak from in other words what's the actual location at the farm show uh I guess trying to figure out distancing now again that kind of search I don't think would raise any bills uh in other searches like a ballistic calculator now that's something where you could measure the distance between a place you're going to shoot from and shoot at in other words the distance I would say again somebody searching for that what red flags is that going to raise and that's the nature he did a bunch of searches of both president Trump and Biden uh he did searches on where was the DNC the RNC the date they started so the FBI is saying they still haven't found a motive and you know I go back to him and that I just think this kid is a lone actor really smart apparently but big- time troubled and he wanted to shoot somebody famous and president Trump just came into his sphere because of Butler Pennsylvania is like an hour from his house and so that's what he focused on because it was just easier and clearly you know president Trump is a well-known person um and like many other people um and I so I think that was the I think that was really the focus because at the end of the day Mass Shooters commit mass shootings because they they want fame they want to be recognized they want to be known um and what from their perspective what far better way to do it than to to shoot somebody that's well known is the FBI trying to counter some of the misinformation that's out there oh there is no doubt I mean I was really surprised when I read this yesterday of the pieces of information and I'm sure it's not all that they have but that there there this Force coming to try to sort of stem the tide of all of the disinformation you know about that you know that the Biden Administration was involved some way to even that the FBI you know cleaned up some evidence at the crime scene where the shooter was found I mean it's just utter nonsense but unfortunately amenda as you might well know the first thing people hear about something tends to be that's what sticks with them so ly and disinformation works if in fact you're trying to spread information that's not true um and sadly with the Internet it's just so easy to do were any permanent changes made to the way the Secret Service or law enforcement in general handle these situations because of this event well I I'm sure they have taken a different approach to how they do how they decide where they're going to put snipers in what areas they're going to cover you know they haven't mentioned that particular building it's interesting because that building apparently was just outside the inner sort of security Circle that they heavily fortify um you know outdoor events are just Tricky by Nature just because you're Outdoors um and that's why the the Secret Service doesn't like them but you know president Trump loves them and and I think he's gone back to them at this point but um they've made adjustments but you you know there's so many moving parts to these events Amanda it's really tough to be able to keep up and and seal off every potential vulnerability we always appreciate you Brad ABC News crime and terrorism analyst Brad investigator Daniela Rivera has a look at why so many drug traffickers use I-15 in Utah to get their drugs to locations around the country it is our greatest threat here in Utah Dustin Gillespie is the drug enforcement administration's assistant special agent in charge in Utah he says loads of mostly Fentanyl and meth are traveling I-15 through Utah every day the easiest and quickest way to move those drugs North and then eventually East easiest and quickest he says for the caloa and halisco cartels based in Mexico shipments can come through a Port of Entry at the Southwest border and travel I-15 all the way up to Montana even Canada or they can hop on I70 or I80 and head east we know where the drugs come from we know what roadway they're coming up we know they're in our community major Jeff nber with the Utah Highway Patrol says they're working hard to find and stop those shipments once they're in route he says 42% of the agency's drug seizures have been on I-15 far more than any other Utah roadway and since October uhp has seized more than 103,000 fentanyl pills 5 years ago those would sell for $25 to $30 each but today one fentanyl pill only cost2 or $3 a sign investigators House is tight ABC senior elections analyst Nathaniel raikit has the numbers Parris just doing generally better in the polls and Biden has opened up an opportunity to win some states that I think most people had agreed were basically out of Joe Biden's reach and that is basically those Southern swing States like Georgia North Carolina so I think it makes sense that Harris is trying to win Georgia and now she has a real shot at winning a state that some Democrats had written off he says former president Donald Trump still has a slight lead in Georgia and North Carolina six people in La have the past so if you've been thinking about getting a new air conditioner call any our services and schedule a free estimate today Google any hour services or schedule online at any hour services.com no one helps more homeowners than any our services it's happening Ates all across America older Americans keep asking where are the lower prices on prescription drugs Joe Biden and kamla Harris keep taking credit for first Harris cast the deciding vote for the inflation reduction act promising to lower drug prices then the Biden Harris Administration use the money from Medicare to bankroll their liberal green agenda that's right instead of savings seniors got a 20% premium increase restrictions on access to medicine and fewer cures now liberals want to expand this Biden Harris scheme that is already hurting seniors thankfully Congressman Blake Moore has always fought to protect Medicare drug coverage call him at 202-224-3121 urge him to keep fighting for affordable drug coverage by opposing HR 4895 paid for by seniors for better care if you're just joining us this morning the uh campaign to reelect Spencer Cox as governor for the state of Utah is issuing an apology this morning people caught up the light at 7200 West 21st South if you're on northbound Mountain View you get a little bit of delay building up around 3500 South Heather and we have some uh police activity Northbound I15 going through Davis County right now I'm seeing uhp stop right near the hillfield road area they're blocking a couple of right lanes traffic is still getting by to the left and the good news is we don't have as much traffic heading north as we do South so it's not causing a huge amount of delays at the moment if you're southbound I15 you're still at 30 minutes or less from Ogden to Salt Lake Eric TOA County Drivers starting to experience a little bit of slow downs in some of the stop lights in Stansbury Park heading north and a little bit at Lake point2 getting onto the freeway time now for Jeff klin's minute of news brought to you by the law offices of Jordan Wilcox couple of years back when I was in my 20s I used to dream about retiring by the time I hit 40 I figured out how much it would cost to keep my private jet going both of my Mansions including the one at the ocean of course this was not idle daydreaming I had spreadsheets and I had plans for making money I was going to buy radio stations stock options trading internet businesses and what I discovered was [Music] humility getting ah head is hard work it takes strategic thinking and a lot of luck and after reading a startling statistic I have some advice for 20 somethings the statistic more and more money is going into gambling while less and less money is going into the stock market instead of investing for retirement all over the country except Utah more and more sports fans lured by a free first bet are pouring what would be retirement money into DraftKings and FanDuel and meantime they're not putting that money into stocks and their retirement plans I understand why drop 100 bucks on the game now you really have something to root for except gambling companies are experts at enticing you to bet more and eventually lose your money meantime put that same money in the stock market and just leave it since 1957 itd average a 10% annual return with hiccups and heart attacks along the way but when the dust settles you might not have a private jet but you will have a retirement Jeff kaplan's minute of news only on KSL News radio brought to you by the law offices of Jordan Wilcox IRS harassing you the law offices of Jordan Wilcox can help visit taxel ut.com because of a surgery I had it put me in a position where I had to learn to walk again I had no hope for any more income we had an IRS burden of about $36,000 with no income and only enough money to keep paying the bills we had to make a decision I was driving home from Salt Lake one day and I heard a commercial on the radio about Jordan Wilcox I got home my wife and I we talked about it and we made the decision to give Jordan Wilcox a call we met with Jordan at his office and they had a plan in place for me almost immediately and because of the good work of the folks at Jordan wilcox's office that burden was reduced to about $895 when we found out that it was only $895 it was like the worst burden in the world have been taken off from our shoulders don't face the IRS alone I'm Utah tax attorney Jordan Wilcox visit taxel ut.com to schedule your free consultation let's solve your tax problems that's the presidential race heavy campaigning today among the candidates Democrat kamla Harris she and her running mate Tim Walls continued their bus tour in Georgia today Trump holds a town hall in Wisconsin amid controversy over his visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday that's being called an illegal campaign photo op NPR reports Trump campaign officials were asked not to take photos or videos in a specific section of the cemetery which allegedly led to a verbal and physical altercation with the cemetery employee overnight the New York Times reporting the cemetery official has opted not to file charges reportedly fearing retribution from Trump supporters ABC's Perry Russ it's time now for the KSL in-depth the school year just started but teachers are already feeling burned out ABC News correspondent Jim Ryan joins me live what's going on there in Texas Jim well Lots happening here in Texas as elsewhere in the country uh and surveys studies of this whole topic have B borne that out if you look at the latest Gallop polling more than four in 10 K through 12 workers that's teachers and teaching assistants principals administrators uh say they always or very often feel burned out at work Amanda that outpaces all other Industries nationally and an extreme case came out of Texas about a week ago a little over a week ago on the first day of school in corana which is about 50 mil south of Dallas an assistant principal named kandra Rogers was called down to a classroom where a kid was having an emotional breakdown she got to the classroom she the students the teachers had already left the room but the kid was still there he was throwing chairs around to threw a chair at kandra Rogers she deflected it he picked up a wooden coat hanger threw it at her and hit her in the face the her right eye was gouged out of the socket uh um kandra Roger was taken to the hospital the doctors say there's nothing they can do she's blind in her right eye but kandra Rogers doesn't blame the kid she blames the state she says that the state has not provided the funding that might have put a mental health professional on her campus to help this kid who was clearly having some kind of Crisis it really it points up I think in a really graphic way what teachers are up against MAA I know that you know there have been behavioral problems with kids in school since there've been schools sure but it has gotten significantly worse in the last few years are teachers saying anything about why they think that is well a lot of it is you know the numbers I think bear that out that indeed uh there are more behavioral issues in classrooms but uh and what's more almost everybody has a camera in their pocket too and that ends up you know sort of amplifying and magnifying this problem when you have videos on YouTube of a kid going crazy in a classroom lashing at a teacher or a teacher lashing a kid so part of it is perception but part of it is reality and I think that that what teachers are saying is that a lot of it has to do with the devices with uh with problems at home you know with the disciplined issues so teachers are asking that states give them more support in terms of funding so what can parents do imagine parents grandparents people in the community you know get involved in the PTA get involved in that school let the teachers know that they're supported even if they they're lacking funding they're Laing lacking Staffing uh equipment whatnot at least the community can kind of rally around these schools and and try to bring up these numbers I mean it's these shocking numbers related to teacher morale Department of Education says 42% of teachers think the job just is not worth dist stress oh that hurts my heart but I'm glad to know it Jim maybe we can do something uh I appreciate your time ABC News correspondent Jim Ryan with me on the in-depth at 15 and 45 649 traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents per gallon Andy well if you're on I15 the drive is uh looking good in Salt Lake County other than a little heavy stretch right between 2115 and 503 South and it's still in Northbound I15 from hillfield Road most of the ramp is blocked right now traffic is getting by to the left into the gore area but they're merging into traffic sooner than they'd like so that's keeping traffic slower than normal right now now most of the traffic is heading southbound you're going to see some heavier pockets of traffic as you move through most of Davis County and then as you get into nor Salt Lake you'll see a few break lights right around Beck Street Eric I15 continues look good in Utah County no impediments to the drive if you're Northbound from Provo 2 point of the M that's a parents it's a lack of emotional regulation and kids in crisis it's not a perception it's reality you're in the classroom enough to know it's a big issue yes I am and I remember when I was substitute teaching what a challenge this was because you just could tell that the students didn't respect the teachers and weren't required to so I think a lot of the the the answer a lot of the fix has to be baseball movie that's out it's about Little League baseball and we want to go see that one this weekend so Labor Day weekend's fun just a barbecue at home too we were talking earlier this morning and we'll check traffic and weather in just a second but we were talking this morning with uh with Jim Ryan from Texas about the burnout that teachers are experiencing already we're you know two weeks into the school year and 40% of American teachers according to a new poll feel burned out already there was a a story of of an extreme case in in Texas where a student threw a wooden hanger at a teacher and took her eye out and so she'll be blind in her right eye as a result of that altercation and I've received several texts on this issue one I just got was I wish the state would require parents to have an activity in the classroom by bringing parents on school hours they'll see how their parenting affects their children that I think would be huge I don't know if you could ever require something like that but boy I think parents would behave differently if they saw the challenges firsthand that teachers face in the classroom uh and it's also a very rewarding experience not to mention educational for the parents that's the in-depth at 15 and 45 719 now traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's dinay app save up to 20 cents per gallon and we go back over crashes that have been cleared and right now the freeways are delay free oh that's good news we'll check it next on KSL News radio if you want to save money I have a really easy way for you to do that and that's shop at NPS does where you shop matter oh my goodness yes I started shopping there a couple of years ago and I buy mostly groceries there but they have so many other things I mean they have everything really and it just depends the the stock in their stores changes several times a day so when I was at the industrial store in Salt Lake last Friday so a week ago tomorrow they brought out a pallet of es scooters that were normally $399 that they were selling for like $230 I think so was aund $160 savings on these es scooters and they just went like that so when when you walk into the store you'll sometimes see like at there at the industrial store there's a there's uh like a display that will tell you what the additional markdowns are what the specials the inore specials are because NPS what they do is they get their inventory from all over the world Overstock unclaimed shipments who knows why they're unclaimed they're brand new merchandise and then they check what the retail sale price is for whatever it is whether it's you know whether it's furniture or clothes or or something for your car or groceries and then they mark it down 20 to 70% and it will blow your mind these are brand new name brand products that are so much lower so if you need to save money I have one terrific tip for you and that is shop at NPS there are two stores located here in Salt Lake one in Leighton and one in orm Tim and Amanda do I look forward to reporting the news yes in so far as it helps me understand what's happening we know that it's important information that's going to Davis counties no problems getting into Hill Air Force Base this morning just a bit of congestion on SR 193 in Clearfield most of that is heading eastbound toward I 15 Eric if you're in Eagle M or Saratoga Springs the eastbound dve is getting a little bit snug sr73 through Eagle Mountain itself then Mount View Cor or heading up to 2100 North that's where it turns at Redwood Road turns into 2100 North all of that progressing over to I15 slow as his Pioneer Crossing coming out of Saratoga Springs at least the freeway looks pretty good just a touch of break tapping after you go P by the tonoga app for KSL Newsradio where Utah's News traffic and weather station time now for Jeff kaplan's minute of news brought to you by the law offices of Jordan Wilcox former president Trump stood on hallow ground at Arlington National Cemetery Monday there was a beautiful wreath laying ceremony order oh but afterward a photo shows the former president doing the thumbs up smiling as he stands over the grave of marine staff sergeant Darren Hoover from Salt Lake City he was killed 3 years ago at Kabul Airport during the Afghanistan withdrawal alongside the former president 17 members of Hoover's family roughly five smiling with thumbs up three unsmiling and somber and off to the side there's Governor Spencer Cox no thumbs up no hands they're behind his back his smile seems a little forced but you read into pictures what you will what you don't see in that picture is the incident that occurred right beforehand as an Arlington worker tried to prevent a campaign photographer from going to Sergeant Hoover's grave as politics is prohibited at the hallowed grave sites according to the New York Times there was a tussle that got physical as the worker tried to stop the photographer but he went to the Grave the picture was snap the Trump campaign says yes there was an Arlington cemetery worker who had a mental health incident Arlington officials only say there was an incident report filed and they're reviewing it meantime a liberal veterans group charges Trump with his thumbs up is using fallen heroes as a prop the Trump campaign says they're prepared to release footage that proves there was no physical incident as yet no footage has been released by The Campaign which says they were only honoring a Fallen Hero at the invitation of his family so on both sides fingers are being pointed over the thumbs up photograph but what's clear is that Arlington National Cemetery Hallowed Ground is now an issue in the presidential campaign and off to the side there's Governor Spencer C oh Jeff kaplan's minute of news only on KSL News radio brought to you by the law offices of Jordan Wilcox IRS harassing you the law offices of Jordan Wilcox can help visit taxel ut.com the decision to give Jordan wiox a call we met with Jordan at his office and they had a plan in place for me almost immediately and because of the good work of the folks at Jordan wilcox's office that burden was reduced to about $895 when we found out that it was only $895 it was like the worst burden in the world had been taken off from our shoulders don't face the IRS alone I'm Utah tax attorney over the 5400 South over pass Heather things have been pretty good most of the morning through Weber Davis County right now you are mostly at freeway speeds on I-15 as you head southbound though you United Delta and Southwest are all anticipating record pass passenger numbers with American expecting 3.8 million passengers uh in the weekend and by car today is expected to be the busiest travel day you're listening to ABC News so you keeping up with the student loan forgiveness plan from the bid Administration and what the Supreme Court says about Dave Nora is here can you set us straight here Dave yeah there's some Whiplash if you feel some Whiplash you're fine that's the way it is now remember this was a huge campaign promise from the Biden Administration they wanted to forgive uh student loans and the first real tangible thing they did it was hey 10 to $20,000 depending on you know your your income and pil grants but they're going to forgive $10 to $20,000 the Supreme Court came in and said absolutely not that's that's too far that's got to go through Congress so once that was struck down he brings in this save plan and almost immediately puts in the save plan the save plan affected more than 8 million borrowers 400,000 of them had their loans forgiven on some level well of course all of these lawsuits start popping up and now the Supreme Court has has said we've got to put a pause on this until it works its way through um the system and ultimately it sounds like the Supreme Court will have to make a ruling on this save plan what this means to you tons and my producer is a student loan payer join the save program there's a pause on it now no interest is acur no payments are having to be made so if you're wondering why don't I have to pay or why are they not demanding or knocking down my house to make my student loan payments right now that's going through the courts right now we'll walk you through Kelsey Dallas of the desite news has done a phenomenal job following this she's going to hold our hands and walk us through what this means in the short term and then what it means in the long term as well and I'm curious too David I'll listen uh to find out what is the argument against this partic did they not change it enough is it still so much like the original forgiveness that it would be something Congress has to deal with directly or that's exactly the argument yes and and that's where a lot of these lawsuits came from and largely from Red States and and this is coming from the states saying uh you know we manage these loans you can't just forgive them so we are directly affected and the Supreme Court has said yeah this this has got to make its way through so we're putting a pause on the system all right we'll follow up with uh David dujanovic coming up at 9 o' here on KSL News radio right now it's 19 traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents per gallon Andy Amanda I'm United Utah Party candidate for Utah County Commission the former president's also caught some criticism for the event which vice presidential candidate JD Vance has pushed back on there is verifiable Nathaniel raiken has the numbers terce just doing generally better in the polls and Biden has opened up an opportunity to win some states that I think most people had agreed were basically out of Joe state that some Democrats had written off he says former president Donald Trump still has a slight lead in Georgia and North Carolina six people in La have been arrested in what is being called a stands at $336 so whether you're flying or driving plan ahead and stay informed ABC Stephanie Ramos strong numbers from the federal government on the nation's gross domestic product growing last quarter at a healthy 3% annual Pace with both personal and business spending up and B's head Deli meet linked to a deadly leria outbreak this is ABC News Utah's Morning News has inside sources the first sitdown interview with vice president kamla Harris and her running mate Tim Walls airs tonight on CNN joining me live in studio the host of inside sources Boyd maton what do you think we'll see tonight Boyd well as always we've gotten into this pattern that everything is now the high stakes biggest moment of you know everything is the first time thing for the vice president and uh so while this is the first sit down interview it will be her and Tim wall sitting down together so that's an interesting uh way to go about that definitely makes it a little softer and a little easier and so how so uh just because she'll be able to defer to him or to say Tim has an opinion on that or you know how it is when you're you know what it's like to be behind the mic all by yourself and you have to answer and you have to think and you have to keep engaging if you have somebody else in the in the room if you have a a partner then you can look over and let them respond for a minute and you can kind of gather your thoughts and keep it going so it takes some of the pressure off to be sure but it's also an interesting Dynamic too because they don't know each other all that well yeah and so that will be interesting to see how that kind of ABS they go back and forth and the big test of course will be what kind of questions get asked and obviously they're not going to get any gotcha kinds of questions but I do hope they're questions that are hard enough that start to show this is what the vice president really believes this is where she really is uh she has some things in in her record that she'll have to defend I mean she got about the Border she has to she's got to talk about the Border she's got to talk about some of the things she did in terms of Criminal Justice uh in California uh that don't really square with the Democratic party yeah uh so I think it'll be interesting to see how CNN approaches it yeah uh and this is the real test she really has been an idea for the last uh almost five weeks now and so now this is the real test in terms of okay uh can you focus on a vision can you paint that can you defend your record that's part of the job and then how do you get the rest of the country to buy into that and say this is a Northbound train it's going somewhere that's really good get on board and so I think that's what she'll be trying to do so this is not the one of Let's soften the edges let's you know she's done that she she had four days of convention to do all of that it's time to answer questions it's time to answer questions and so that will be the big test today it's such a fine line I think for a vice presidential candidate because it is their administration's record but they don't get to control it yeah exactly so they have to defend a record that they were a part of but had zero control over how do you do that it is that's always that's always that's why Vice presid that's why vice presidency is always a hard thing to to make that shift from is because you don't get to control the things you're always in the room you always have a voice uh but you're not the ultimate decied there's one name on the door there's one name on the door so she and she will have to defend that a little bit today and especially on things like inflation and prices and housing and those kinds of things so she has a lot to answer plus there's so many things going on in the world that she is in the room for right now whether it's uh dealing with Israel and Gaza whether it's what's going on with Ukraine and Russia or Taiwan there's a lot of things where she's part of the administration and she's got an answer I want to hear what what you think tomorrow be fascinating come on back tomorrow we'll be back Boyd mat with me on the in-depth at 1545
