three touchdowns and that stretch wasn't all his fault but two years ago at Riverside City College he threw for almost 4600 yards 44 touchdowns you and I both watched the game from last week with Southern Illinois and 348 yards three touchdowns he had a 57 yard bomb he had another 50 y uh really looked good throw on the Deep ball last week it's interesting though too he had a hard time with the mesh point I think they fumbled the ball a couple of times on RPO action with redoff last week but again he's got a big arm started the last four games last year he's only got six career starts he is a coach's son he's got innate ability to make things happen a good Scrambler but as you mentioned he can make some plays pressure though will bother him defensively Tyler bad e the defensive end let him in tackles for loss and quarterback hurries each of the last two years he had a quarterback hurry Last Week Big defensive end at 65275 and in the secondary he watched Jacob Robinson he had an interception last week he's got nine in his career which I believe is third all time in BYU history and we may not you may not remember it Scott but we saw Robinson two years ago make a huge play he tackled Tanner morai on the two-point conversion at the end of the New Mexico balll which preserved the win for BYU over huge play right there and don't forget that Isaiah B he's number 13 who will not start at that defensive end spot but he's a guy that had 27 tackles in eight starts last year he is much improved and he is very athletic baddy you know we we talked a lot about him but he kind of disappeared last week now they ran away from him some at that defensive end position but he does have 26 and2 career tackles for a loss of that in spot for the Cougars it's that's a lot different than many because 56 players for BYU have already served their Mormon missions in over 32 different countries they speak 14 different languages among them the average age of their team 21 1/2 years old they have 27 players that are married on this team and a lot of them have kids too from year to year you look at their team and about half of them have either been on a mission or planned to go on a mission those missions last uh generally for a year two years sometimes so uh yeah they do it a little bit differently nice night here at Ford Stadium let's go to down to the sideline for the first time a check in with Steve lale Steve do we have Steve we do not have Steve we'll try to check in with Steve a little bit later here on our pregame show still to come on the pregame show I'll talk to back at Ford Stadium Pony profile time with Anthony Booker Jr right yes sir but who calls you Anthony uh just my parents when I'm in trouble tank of course is what we all know you as when did the nickname Tank come about um when I was young I'm a junior obviously uh so in the household want need you know something to call me as well so I just went by Tank since I was a little young you're fourth on the team in scoring right now behind two running backs and the place kicker you got to like that playing that nose tackle to be fourth in scoring yeah I'm just excited um anything to help the team really it's just team sport I love our guys and so anything to help out the team veteran guy you had your first fumble recovery and your first touchdown last week in the win over HC you tell us about that play um it was a good play I seen um Jafar make the sack great great sack um great pursuit to the ball by me the ball came out and I just scooped it up and seen the end zone so try to make have fun with that when's the last time you carried the football in a game um Carry like that probably High School freshman year something like that play some running back in high school I played tight end but uh I had a pick six my night and then uh opener this year you had the safety uh against Nevada that was kind of a big momentum turning play for the team wasn't it yes sir like I said Same Same U just anything to help about the team I know um Back Against The Wall espcially did a good job getting the ball in the one and our defense just helped out you've been at Maryland last year at Arkansas what brought you here to SMU this season um just um being part of a winning culture um these guys did a great job last year um I didn't have that much success in my other schools and just wanted to be part of something winning culture um around Good Guys good good staff and um that's just kind of let me be here yeah this with the conference Championship last year you didn't get to be a part of it but can you feel that attitude and that mood from guys that were here last season yeah we still feel like you know we still have that edge to us um guys don't really think we belong but I feel like that Winning Edge and everybody's Collective I see what they have in the locker room to bring that Championship uh Mantra so just want to add on to that you're one of a lot of new guys on that defensive line how hard has chemistry been able to develop here just in a month getting ready for the season yeah chemistry has been great we started out in January when I first got here um uh guys like EOB and and Cory returning and then U we just got a addition with Jared when it came in June it's been pretty great we do uh things outside of football come over my house play the game eat some food um good Fellowship we did that all all all year really so our chemistry has been great and um I just feel like we're on a good track aside for the rest of the season two and0 start but now 10 power four teams the rest of the way it's it's what this program been longing for you got to be looking forward to you've been in these situations too yeah I feel like um we we're ready for it um no task Too Tall um I just feel like myself I've been you know Big 10 SEC um Ball's going to be ball just that's why kind tell those guys Ball's going to be ball uh and we can play so we're ready for it this BYU team huge offensive line huge running back to LJ Martin what kind of uh challenge do they posst to you here tonight um just we got to you know rise to the ball I feel like um play great technique but yeah just swarm as a defense we uh we preached that with uh coach Simons swarming to the football going to take all 11 so uh that's something we just emphasizing this week that is tank Booker on our Pony profile tonight I'll talk to Rett Lashley next this is s football from learfield big trip on the horizon The Parking Spot gets you going faster the parking spot is a simpler easier is SMU Mustang football on the ticket the ticket back at Ford stadium for CH talk with s head coach red Lashley obviously big Improvement week one to week two some of it I know it's the competition you face but 28 nothing's 28 nothing in the first quarter yeah we got back to starting fast which is you know what we want to do week in and week out and um I thought our guys bounced back well uh they were focused they were ready to play they did what we were supposed to do and and got a win and and now we're are in week three saw a lot more of Kevin Jennings at quarterback last week was that just kind of the product of the way the game went with your rotation yeah you know we went to the game with the same mindset we did week one they were going to go two and two to start the game and and then just the way the game went we were ahead 28 nothing so it gave us a chance to to play them both and and Kevin got a lot of good drives and Reps in and you know I think again we're going to need both those guys throughout the season so that's going to be a positive for us at this point through two games I think it's hard to find fault with the way either guy has played thus far you know when they're both in we move the ball we score points I think our team believes in both of them and and so yeah they they've done a nice job overall obviously got to play a ton of the roster last Saturday night one guy I thought really shine was your running back Derek McFall he's got a little shake for you back there do he he does and you know with Kamar weaton being out for the year and you know we've already got a few bangs and bruises like we're going to potentially need him down the stretch so to get him 15 16 carries get him used to college football I think you saw some of the explosion that we think he'll have and be a really good player for us in the future your number one guy back there's been bashard Smith did you expect him to kind of jump out this quickly in his first full-time season his running back I I don't know you know we we saw it in Spring football we saw it in Fall camp that that he did a nice job and and had some juice to him running the football but you know credit him for playing well in the first two weeks and I thought ljs ran the ball really well it'll be good to get rooster back this week so but uh yeah I think Rashad's handled his first two games as a running back really well you changed up a lot of the offensive line last week shuffling some positions same on the depth chart this week so I guess that means it worked yeah I think so I think we feel good that's our best unit and and the more we play we'll get better and better each week so feel like we can developed continuity there we still have a lot of faith in Andrew shamble now being back at tackle uh should we need him and we probably will and and then you know Nate Anderson and Ben Sparks played a lot at guard and uh we feel really good about all four of our guards BYU with a big win last week in their opener and I was watching their offense obviously they're huge up front 68 69 at tackle and their interior too they got big receivers big running back they got size everywhere on offense yeah they're big and they're old you know they're big and as you know a lot of the guys at BYU are in their mid to late 20s and half of them half families so um they're full grown men as we like to say and they've got great size they're very strong power powerful and uh we got our hands full with their two running backs uh LJ Martin and Hanley R Patty that's two totally different styles isn't it it is and they like to pound the ball and then play action and throw it over your head and so um that'll be the big key early is you know can we can we contain the Run game um and not get them in really good advantageous situations where they've got great balance you know we've got to stop the run they may hit some passes on us but throughout the course of the game we got to stop the run game their quarterback Jake retof got thrown into a tough spot I think at the end of last season but he throws for 348 three touchdowns last week showing I think a lot of what he did at the junior college ranks too yeah I mean 348 and only 20 completions again they were they were hitting chunk plays you know they run the ball really well and then they they again they have great tight ends great wide outs he played really well I think the The Experience he got last year um you know really helped him play really really sharp coming into year to this is the first of 10 straight power four games the rest of the way it's what you wanted right it is it's what we asked for it's where we feel like we belong we're excited uh I feel like our team's going to compete you know who knows what the results for 10 weeks are going to be um we'll find out a lot about our program our team where we stand uh you know where we've made great improvements where we have improvements we got to make but I think we got a team that's going to going play hard going to compete and represent SMU well one nine straight here at Ford too what's been the secret on that I don't know we like playing here in front of our fans you know last week our student section was absolutely incredible looking forward to them doing that tonight wearing all red and our our entire crowd was just awesome the game day experience was fantastic our guys like playing here uh we got to find a way to get the double digits tonight let's do it that's R Lashley on Chalk talk we'll talk to uh we'll Title the largest independent title company in the United States from the Milestone radio Booth here are rich Phillips and Scott Garner 5 and A2 minutes away between SMU and BYU here at Gerald J Forge Stadium cloudy evening 82 degrees right now slight chance of a shower and also some temperatures dropping down into the 70s throughout the game let's get to our Capital Title a Shad at company keys to success with Scott hey thanks so much Rich well key number one for the Mustangs tonight got to speed up BYU quarterback Jake redoff don't let him get comfortable pressure has typically bothered red slof the offensive tackles for BYU they have struggled on a few rushes around the edge they did that last week expect SMU to strategically dial up pressure on redl who was 20 of 30 last week for 348 yards and three touchdowns be interesting too to see how much pressure we can get without having to Blitz and remember retof 20 of 30 and that was with three drops mixed in too so key number one speed up the BYU quarterback key number two for SMU outside linebackers safeties they've got to get to the edge now they may not be real big big but bew he's got some very quick scatback type running backs that can get to the edge senior running back hinley rotti he had 13 carries for 57 yards at a touchdown last week LJ Martin the other big running back 5.2 yards per carry with a touchdown they are quick and they like to run outside key number three for SM you've got to be disciplined in the option game control gaps don't overp pursue in addition to the BYU RPO game they will run some old school option and so linebackers and safeties for the Mustangs they've got to get to the point of attack and play assignment football tonight and one extra key here for the Mustangs contain that BYU wide receiver Chase Roberts Roberts one of the best wide receivers in all of the Big 12 he's going to draw some safety help and that means that on the other side going to probably play manto man and that means you got to be good at that cornerback spot and the outside linebacker spot those are the keys tonight Rich that's the Capital Title the Shaded company keys to success Capital Title the largest independent title company in the United States and the official Title Company of SFU Athletics quickly before we had the coin toss us go down to the sideline of Steve lale Steve Rich you mentioned there's a chance of rain I talked to a couple of the guys down here who keep track of the rain and lightning and what's how close I was assured it won't rain which I assume guarantees that we're in for a torrential downpour at some point the other the one thing that I would add to Scott Keys there is that today is one of those games where look the Mustangs expect a slugfest all around but especially walk uh especially the SMU offensive line and BYU's defensive line the defensive line is big but they don't do a whole lot of exotic looks so as the Mustangs try to incorporate Andrew chamble and some of the other transfers and get them more comfortable with this unit this is the kind of game where you're playing a higher level of competition but balancing that with maybe not the most complex defensive look so it may be an ideal game to get some things straightened out on the offensive line going forward all right thanks a lot Steve a big Roar there behind Steve was actually for the BYU team running out this is only the second time they've played here in Dallas against SMU first time here at Ford Stadium really good turnout in the blue for the BYU fans our coin toss is brought to you by Bank of Texas powered by B Financial we go above so you can go beyond the captains are out at Midfield with Crone Barrett our referee tonight welcome welcome Mr Weber our honorary guest here with us okay BYU you other visitors you will call it okay that his tails that his heads tails that his heads what would you like to call heads Heads is the call it is Tails you want the ball you want that okay which way would you guys like to kick s you wins the opening toss and yes unlike when they fooled us two weeks ago at NAS Scott they'll take the football first here as what Lashley always likes to do the Mustangs will have the ball first led by wed stone at quarterback the 61 Jor from Parish Episcopal uh High School is thrown for 332 yards three touchdowns one interception in the first two games this season and he's now 13-2 as a starter in his SMU career brashard Smith is running back 510 senior from Richmond Heights Florida the Miami transfer he leads the team with 21 carries for 178 yards and three touchdowns at wide receiver romelo Brenson 62 senior from Miami four catches on the season for romelo kesan Smith 61 senior from San Diego has just two catches but one was a 35 yd touchdown last week and Jake Bailey the 510 grad student from San Clement California his first touchdown in two years last Saturday night in the win over hcu the tight end is RJ Maryland the 64 Jr from South Lake Carol leads the team with nine catches for 173 yards and a score PJ Williams the left tackle 65 317 sophomore out of Dickinson High School Savon bird the left guard 65304 a junior from Duncanville High School jakai Clark the center 64 334 graduate student from Loganville Georgia Logan par the Right Guard 64316 a grad student from otes Texas and Justin osor the right tackle 65305 a grad student from Flower Mound Marcus High School will faren a transfer from Boise state is set to kick off here for BYU the Mustangs will have brashard Smith back to return the kickoff SMU we're in the Reds tonight the we red Friday here at SMU red jerseys White pants with the white helmets and the red Mustang BYU in the white jerseys and pants with the blue numbers and the blue helmets with that y logo on the side you you usually see a sea of red and blue here at Ford Stadium but usually not this much red and not this much blue yeah a lot of blue here again BYU's only played here this is only the second time here against s that BYU has played the other time was uh back when they were members of The Wack together in 1916 overtime win in 19 97 for BYU Rashard Smith's going to let that kick bounce at the four and it'll go into the end zone SMU will have it at their own 25 yd line the BYU Cougars defensively Tyler baddy has 15 career sacks at one end Logan loule is the other end the nose guard John Nelson 64 290 lb Senor Blake mangelson is the other defensive tackle 65 275 their linebackers Isaiah glasker uh had 65 235 Harrison tager 612 235 sophomore and then their Rover Jack Kelly 62 240 junr from kar's Utah the corners Jacob Robinson Mark Collins the safeties are Micah Harper and Tanner wall wall from Arlington Virginia first and 10 SMU from their own 25 yd Line Stone in the shotgun brashard Smith to his right Jake Bailey motions into the slot on the right hand side and the handoff is fake to brashard Smith the throw out the right flat RJ Maryland and he ankle tackled after a gain of just two yards a fine Tackle by Mark Collins out on the edge that's RJ Maryland that lined up in that right sniffer back spot right behind the tackle right there and he likes to just go out and run kind of an arrow route two yd pass second down and eight SMU at their own uh 27 yd line they go left to right of the first quarter of play three receivers to the left for Preston Stone bashard Smith will take a handoff coming right no Edge is set there he's going to be tackled for a loss of two or three yards blank mangelson leading the way along with their middle linebacker Harrison tager is going to be third down and long for SMU tager a guy they wanted him to get downhill this week he can be a liability he did have three stops in a breakup in week number one they did a really good job of playing that outside Zone run into the boundary and they have forced the Mustangs into a third and 11 from their own 24 yd line 54% conversion rate the first two weeks for SMU Stone from the shotgun to throw looks left scans back middle under pressure he's going to be sacked sacked by the Rover Jack Kelly back at the 16 yd line SMU is going to go three and out well that time Tyler baddy did not get credit for the sack but he did a spin move on an inside move on PJ Williams and really confused things and muddied the waters and then they were able to finish him off that's a really good defensive series for BYU and Parker King uh Kingston will be back at the BYU 37 yd line awaiting the punt from Isaac Pearson he averages 40.7 on his first three attempts this season will Benton is the Snapper for SMU and they're going to go with a rugby right end over in Kick it's a good one a fair catch is going to be signal for and made around the 36 yd line of BYU the SMU defense Elijah Roberts Jafar I Harvey are the ends tank Booker with that scoop and score last week the nose tackle he also has a safety he's fourth on the team in points right now with eight on the Year Jared Harrison hunt the other defensive tackle the linebackers Kobe Wilson and Amad Walker at corner looks like Jaylen Davis Robinson starts on the right side the left side Brandon Crosley your safeties CJ Sanders Jonathan Mcgill and Isaiah wakia we have 1317 to play in the first quarter first down and 10 at the 35 yd line for BYU on their opening possession they'll go into a pistol formation help J Martin out of El Paso is the tail back to quarterback Jake rof out of Corona California 61 Jr first and 10 from his own 35 and the handoff is coming left and the Mustangs are all over at the first one there is a mod Walker for the S subu defense bringing Martin down at the 36 a gain of just one good job there by Amad Walker linebackers for the Mustangs were much better last week getting to the point of attack and they needed to because Jafari Harvey did not set the edge that time at his defensive in position into the boundary and now second down and nine here for BYU wide receivers Cody EPS out of Los Angeles Chase Roberts their leader 64210 Jr from Highland Utah Darius Lasser is the other wide receiver Keanu Hill a 64 240 lb senior out of ESS Trinity is the ti in second down nine at the 36 yd line from a pistol formation rof looks to throw fires it right side Crossley has terrific coverage over there and he throws it out of bounds to his intended receiver Darius Lasser it'll be third down and nine upcoming and the big question was can the Mustangs get pressure without having to Blitz and that time Elijah Roberts working on that right tackle K and we talked about how the tackle struggled last week with some bull rushes and Roberts got pressure and backed his guy right up into retof making it problematic now it's third down we'll see if the Mustangs Blitz here third down and nine BYU at their 36 yd line Mustangs went three and out on their opening possession the defense trying to follow suit here against the BYU offense they'll empty the back field for rlof and now LJ Martin will motion back in to his right hand side looking to throw is red slof Mustangs run a stunt they have time they complete this underneath at the 40 breaks a tackle to the 45 and a first down out to about Midfield on the reception there for BYU was Riner Swanson and that'll be enough for a first down they'll put him at the 46 yd line a gain of 10 it was a terrific job LJ Martin blocking a mod Walker the running back got out there he made the play and this is what BYU can do they can stretch the field on you and they've got guys that will get out there and get physical they weren't that physical last week it's very apparent that their head coach Kanani sataki is talked about ratcheting up the physicality this week 12 minutes to go first quarter we scoreless first down 10 B Wu at their own 46 yd line under Center this time for rlof and he fakes an end round he's going to run right I think he wanted an option but his T to running back took off and he fumbles the football as he's tackled bean bags are on the ground and the ball is in the possession of Elijah Roberts for SMU and this mustang team we talked about it early on trying to create some turnovers SMU now plus two in turnovers we've caught it up three times but we now have uh a couple of big turnovers that was the biggest so far of season and remember BYU had a problem at the mesh point last week and they have a problem here Elijah Roberts with his first career fumble recovery looked like Kobe Wilson was the first guy in there on the stop for the SMU defense and the Mustangs going to start off this time and plus territory 1146 to go in the first quarter scoreless they're first and 10 at the BYU 43 yd Line running back here is believe that's Rashard Smith once again just behind it to the left of Preston Stone play action Preston looking under pressure he smacked hard and driven down at his own 45 yd line and once again jack Kelly is in there who had the sack that end that last possession Tyler baddy coming in off the edge as well an absolute disaster in pass protection right there and we talked about Logan par sometimes he'll occasionally try to uh motion back out that was par trying to take a pass set and go to the other side of the line protect second down 21u with a play action Stone has time throws a screen left to Jake Bailey caught at the 46 of SMU not much there he gains about two to the 48 yd line and he's tackled right there it'll be third down and long coming up foru first two games the Mustangs did not allow a sack we had four of them defensively which is not that great but to not give up a sack is really good and now two sacks here in the first four minutes of this ball game that's too many and now it's a third down and long here for SMU two by two the wide receivers that includes Matthew hner who's wide to the left the two receivers on each side are stacked it's third and 19 from the SMU 48 yd line pressure look from BYU they have six on the line they're going to rush just four but they came with the backer late Preston Stone makes him Miss slides to his left he's got to throw as he's being hit he throws it out of bounds incomplete big pressure that time from Harrison tager their middle linebacker he missed him the first time got a little contact at the end s goes three and out once was it just tagged in there but they also had another linebacker and the pass protection for Preston Stone here to begin this ball game has been absolutely abysmal uh they have been nipping at his heels pretty much every time he's tried to drop back to pass I've not seen him play with his feet that hot before Isaac Pearson to punt once again Kingston stands at his own 6yd line straight on Kick this time in over in Kingston's going to let it bounce behind him at the one it'll go into the end zone and they will have it at the 20 yd line 1040 to go in the first quarter scoreless between SMU and BYU this is SMU football well hang on we had a penalty flag down so standby and we'll hear from our official Caron Barrett illegal formation kicking team board and four players in the backfield five R penalty first down BYU tack that on at the end of the touchbacks of by shoot you should be starting at the 25 yd line 1039 to go first quarter no score SMU and BYU this is SMU football from learfield Pony up and radio 2024 the SB Mustangs have had to punt for the second time now and SMU trying to take advantage of a fumble but could not with immense pressure on Preston Stone who has been sacked a couple of times in two possessions he has not had any time at all when he has dropped back to pass the football BYU's got it back at their own 25 yd line scoreless 1039 to play here in this first quarter Cameron Robertson at defensive end moving in at defensive tackle is going to be Jonathan Jefferson Jefferson had a nice game last week against hcu Cory Roberson the other D tackle and Roberson had a second interception in as many seasons last week pretty good for a defensive tackle to have one yeah that's set interceptions in back toback ears for SFU first down at 10 for BYU they're at their own 25 yd line the field almost completely in the shade as the sun comes out only the numbers on up on the far side of the field in the sun students all in the sun over there on the far side but they'll be in the shade here shortly on a beautiful night at Ford Stadium pistol formation for BYU Jake rof is their quarterback the tailback is LJ Martin first down 10 at the 25 yd line for the Cougars rlof will hand this one straight up the middle bit of a hole there to the 30 tripped up by Ahad Walker at the 31 yd line a gain of six on the play that's a nice gain of six that's what BYU wants they want to stay ahead of the chains get four five six yards a run that's just a simple inside Zone play linebackers late filling and it's second down and four here for BYU who's off to a very good start tonight save for the fumble on their last possession ball on the right hash for the Cougars second down four from their 31 yd line two receivers left one right Jake Roff in a shotgun fourman front for S on second down and four for BYU and they're going to run an option play coming left pitched out to Martin at the 30 up the left side 34 to the 36 town of the Miguel will trip up Al barttin there but he picks up five and he moves the chain that was the old school option that we had talked about on the Facebook pregame show and some in our pregame show on the radio side Jonathan McGill trying to run the alley getting there a little bit late and the running back slipped The Tackle of McGill enabling him to pick up a couple of extra they move the sticks on an option play I still challenge your term of old school option because they're in a pistol formation Scott first down 10 at the 36 yard old school as you can get these days though scoreless here the first quarter and play action rof has time bat it down at the line of scrimmage Jonathan Jefferson knocks that ball away it'll be second down to 10 well got to like Jonathan Jefferson the Georgia transfer he had three tackles coming into the ball game 63 315lb tackle he's been very active down inside and he just adds to what tank Booker and Mike Lockard and Harrison hunt bring to the table you've got four or five guys that can play the three or the one for the Mustangs ends now are Isaiah Smith and Elijah Roberts second down and 10 for BYU from their own 36 yd line Smith's been good so far the first two games pistol formation rlof going to slide to his right flushed out of the pocket by Jared Harrison hunt throws on the run it's going to be caught by Cody EPS 45 right side 50 Out of Bounds at about the SMU 47 yd line with a first down on a gain of 17 Harrison hunt rushed inside the tackle and that allowed redoff to squeak outside he's able to just waggle his way to the sideline a little T touch pass to EPs and a really nice play Cody EPS junor out of Los Angeles had just two catches last week for a total of eight yards but he gives him a first and 10 at the SMU 47 yd line 845 to go in a scoreless first quarter rof out of a shotgun two receivers right one left on the wide side of the field and the motion of man across the formation they H fake the handoff going right redoff is going to run left to the 45 down to the 42 yd line he will pick up five on the Kobe Wilson makes the stop retof can run two years ago at Riverside City College he ran for 515 yards and six touchdowns while throwing for almost 4600 yards and it was Ray Pao and Darius Lasser running back SL uh wide receiver that threw a couple of good blocks everybody on this team doing a really nice job at blocking and staying on their blocks at the point of attack second and five BYU at the s 42 yd line rof with LJ Martin to his left to the backfield two by two wide receivers fake a toss left retof waiting to throw across the middle of the field that one knocked away Isaiah wakia comes in and has a quick hand around from behind Chase Roberts to bat that ball away it'll be third down nice job by wakia you also had Jaylen Davis Robinson down there so bracket coverage on maybe their best wide receiver one of the top wide receivers in the Big 12 you've got to control Roberts tonight this is where they like to go to him on third short third and five at the 42 of SMU for BYU Roberts will motion to the right three receivers all over there now Roff steps off looks to the sideline retof has had plenty of time he has not had Happy Feet so far doing a good job of stepping into his throws early on play clock is down to four third down and five rof rolls the pocket to the right here comes some pressure from Kobe Wilson he throws this one high and a great leaping Gap grab no it's not made that was knocked out Jonathan McGill freeze the ball from Ken Mary and it looked like he was going to have a great grab at the 30 and Miguel times it perfectly there is a flag down however in the offensive Back Field did Wilson get there late and R the quarterback personal foul roughing the passer Defense number 24 15yd PTY automatic first down he came on a delayed Blitz and I was wondering about that as hard as he was racing up the field to get to retof the quarterback but boy what a great play by Miguel to bre break that ball up but it's all for not as a result of the penalty and penalties have been a problem for the mustaches yeah last year they only averaged uh 4.6 penalties per game in week one they had 11 last week still had six first down and 10 for BYU at the SMU 27 yd line 742 to go first quarter were scoreless boy that is play plays under review is this under review for targeting play on a review to see if that ball was caught or not it was a late breakup and they're going to see if maybe he had gone down with the ball with his knee to the ground before the ball was Jarred loose we'll tell you what the result is after a timeout with 742 to go first quarter no score SMU and BYU this is SMU football from lfi it's finally time for some Mustangs football y'all Ozona Grill and baron Greenville Avenue has the perfect spot football on the ticket ticket 742 to go first quarter no score s ofu and BYU all right the replay was to review to see if the pass was caught by Ken Maran and it was is the ruling it was a reception down to around the 30 yd line of SMU and then they tack on the roughing the passer penalty against Kobe Wilson on top of that as so now BYU is going to be all the way down at the SMU 16 yd line and they are two of two on thirds and their third down conversion attempts have been long ones for the most part and you know the Mustangs they're coming out they're playing playing good football here but BYU has come out and they are executing it both in the passing game and in the Run game right here and Mustangs defensively on their heels a little bit and I was kind of looking down to see what's the disparity in total plays run right now it's 11 to6 BYU the Mustangs have gone three and out both possessions and they have negative yards I believe minus 18- 18 on those first two possessions because of a couple of sacks y 742 to go first quarter we scoreless first two sacks the old Line's giv up this year too BYU will have a first down and in at the SMU 16 yd line Jake retof at a shotgun LJ Martin to his right receivers Bunch tight on the right hand side now they'll motion across to the left they fake a toss right they throw it down the middle of the field and bobbled in the end zone caught touchdown BYU well Isaiah wakia let him go I'm not sure why around the 5 yd line and he got behind the defense and ends up diving in there there for the touchdown reception that is a really nice play and nice execution by BYU's quarterback Jake retof who has come to play tonight I believe that's their tight end mataba who made the catch and then he landed I think on the point of the football and has just stayed flat on his back in the end zone ever since and rof had a lot going on there with a fake toss right and then he just fired a strike to vavas bobbled it and McGill unable to close in in time there and the catch was good for a touchdown with 716 to go in the first quarter the BYU training staff out uh to the attention of tce In The End Zone yeah it was Mill coming over on kind of a Mayday 911 because wakia again had let him go as they were running some Zone on the back end of that and TSI comes up with the touchdown grab but you know Keanu Hill is their number one tight end he's a converted wide receiver who started the last five games last year they were just kind of in flux in offseason trying to look for somebody who could play tight him that was quite a catch by matatas on that last play he has two catches this season he has two touchdowns this season he had a 19 y last week a 16 Y tonight extra point coming from will faren BYU striking first here in the middle of the first quarter and the P will make it 7 to nothing BYU has the lead with 716 to play in the first quarter we'll keep it here after that touchdown it was a 16 yd touchdown pass that capped uh the drive for BYU and it gives them the seven to nothing lead Mustangs offense that's what's the most disconcerting part about it's not being down seven to nothing number 21 of BYU is now [Music] number I'll have number 21 is now number it's number 98 that's what you expected 21 to 98 it's a special teams number but I was going to say it's not that you're down seven nothing it's the fact that the offensive line the first three Series has struggled to be average in pass protection there there have been linebackers and tackles that have been getting into the back field consistently and just making things very uncomfortable for Preston Stone and uh the game plan as you mentioned probably going to be seeing Kevin Jennings here on this next Drive will faren kick off high and short going to be caught by brashard Smith at the nine right side numbers he cuts left 10 15 makes a man miss at the 20 doesn't make the me next man miss at the 22 yd line a pretty solid tackle there from Isaiah Glaser and that's where s subu will have it first down and 10 Preston Stone was the quarterback of the first two series we expect to see Kevin Jennings here it's not a Performance Based change that we are seeing here this has been rashley's planed through the first three weeks series three and four handled by the sophomore out of South Oak Cliff Kevin Jennings he's thrown for 210 yards and a touchdown he's run for 58 and a score in the first two weeks and jayen Knight is the running back missed last week with a minor injury just held out for precautionary reasons and really need n to step up especially with LJ Johnson being a little dinged up first down 10 at to 22 for S down seven nothing mid first quarter to BYU out of a shotgun and rolling to his right Kevin Jennings looking throwing Jaylen Knight and catch 25 5 yd line up the right sideline to the 30 and taken out of Bounds at the 33 11 yds in the first SMU first down of the night really like that a nice play nice play called by Red Lashley with some overp pursuing linebackers for BYU the first couple of possessions and that time they get him out on the edge and just throw it out in the flat where the linebacker wasn't first down 10 SMU at their 33 yd line Jennings out of the shotgun with a play action looking right throwing it that way and boy fortunate that was not picked off by Mark Collins who had terrific coverage down that right sideline on kesan Smith and Collins the most experienced of their guys in the backfield at that cornerback spot 30 career starts coming in 30 100 tackles 24 breakups that is number 25 second down 10 at the 33 yd line for suu they're on the right hash and they fake a toss left here goes jinnings off Right Guard has room 40 breaks it outside 45 and he'll step out of Bounds at the SMU 48 yd line and Kevin Jennings going to run that for 15 and another first down and an absolute pancake block by kesan Smith on the aforementioned Marquee Collins that physical cornerback he just put him right into the ground first down and 10 SMU from their own 48 625 to go first quarter 7 nothing BYU has the advantage on S ofu empty back field now for Kevin Jennings this his first possession of the game and Jennings with a couple of first downs leading theu offense first down and 10 from the 48 yard line empty backfield again Jennings will throw a screen left caught by brashard Smith picks up a block to the 50 he'll be wrapped up at the 47 yd line of BYU five more on the game and really liked how RJ Maryland blot down right there on bagna uh it really pushed him and where he wanted to go shoved him back down inside wide receivers tight ends for the Mustangs blocking really nicely on this particular drive right here second down five SMU at the 47 of BYU two receivers left one to the right B the left hash Kevin Jennings hand this off to brashard Smith picking his way through the line to the 45 down to the 44 defense swarming him there they end up with the football but said he was down it'll be a pick up of three it's third down two and you say well just a two or three yard pickup but what it does is it keeps you right where you want to be you've got a third down and two and even if you don't make this you've got the option to go for it and so the Mustangs looking much better here what the run for Jennings has done is it's curtailed the Blitz and the pressure from BYU two tight ends hner comes in along with stone eie on third down and two at the 44 of BYU Jaylen Knighton is the running back the two tight ends both to the right hand side on third down and two and the handoff is tonight he's going to go away for the tight ends left he is wrapped up at the 43 he's going to be stopped a yard short of the first down well they brought the safety down that that strong side safety down into the box and went cover one they were expecting run they got it and we ran away from it but just could not get away from the initial tackler and it's Fourth and short and they're going to go for it LJ Johnson now will come in fourth down and not even a yard they are just short of the 42 which is the line to gain remember LJ Johnson was a little bit banged up after last week but we've got to have this yard shotgun formation for Jennings and Kevin is going to have a flag down I think right last might call a timeout timeout before the snap was the call and we'll take it with us here too 415 to go in the first quarter BYU 7 SMU nothing this is SMU football from learfield Rudy's Real Texas barbecue is your Mustang football tailgating headquarters the 42 1/2 yd line you need about a foot and we'll see what the Mustangs dial up here but I like you rich I was a little bit concerned we were in shotgun and running back wasn't quite set and lasty decides to call the timeout yeah first timeout called by SMU tonight you know Rhett told me at the start of the Season he a little more apt to use an early timeout in either half because you've got the two-minute timeout timeout yeah I got mik terica was very adamant last night on the NFL broadcast that it was the two-minute warning they went to I thought you were trying to trip me up there for a second no I was tripping myself up is what I was doing it's a two-minute timeout so with the added timeout that you get Brett did admit he'd be a little more apt to call an early timeout and obviously an important one here you're at the 42 and a half of the fourth down in inches you played Nevada you played Houston Christians so far you've gone forward on fourth down three times you've converted twice in those situations so the Mustangs two of three on Fourth this year this one right here though the first of the game between the two teams I like ducking your head in behind your big Center jakai Clark oh they are going to go under Center on fourth down and a foot Jennings Under Center easily shoots through all the way down to the 41 yd line picks up two I like that game plan Rich we got this one up here man tell Casey Woods radio that one down next time all right I I think Rett looked down just like you and I did thought wait a second no let's not do this let's call the timeout just just run it right behind the center first down 10 SMU at the 41 of BYU 355 to go first quarter 7 nothing the Cougars have the lead pistol formation with rooster knon as the tail back receiver tight left two wide to the right on First and 10 at the 41 of BYU and rolling right under a ton of pressure and somehow gennings delivers it underneath right side caught by romelo Brinson at the 40 running right sideline 3530 then he's run out of Bounds at the 20 way past the end of the play and a flag came down they'll tack some on Mustang's going with 12 Personnel right there and what a block by Jordan Hudson who I think he's still blocking down there he would not let go and just ran his guy five yards downfield the wide receivers have come to play and they are physical tonight without the football that's what great teams do Bo what a play by Kevin Jennings I mean he rolls right and immediately has a defender in his face and still delivered a great ball to R for a big gain they gained 11 on the play officials talking this one over Corone Barrett to tell us after the play is over personal foul late hit whiff tgy Defense number 28 at a 15yd penalty the previous play is
