Women's 400m Freestyle S9 Final | Swimming | Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

We have some really big names going in this tie. Let's introduce the swimmers. Summer Schmit going for the United States in lane 8. Very much an outside chance from lanele for the 18-year-old. Also from the United States, 24-year-old Natalie Sims. One of two US swimmers who qualify for the final swimming at her second Paralympic Games. From the Republic of China turning 19 today, she'll be looking to defend her title later on in this competition, she's in lane 7. Gold in 2016 for Marques Soto, the defending champion in a race in which she came from behind to claim gold. Patterson, the reigning world champion. Very comfortable in the pool and somebody who knows how to win and is expected to win every time she gets in the pool. Ellie Cole has taken three medals down the years twice bronze and silver in Rio but she is a 6-time Paralympic gold medallist overall. Toni Shaw, 18-year-old from Great Britain who is looking to build on the succession she had at London at the World Championships most recently in 2019. While Zsofia Konkoly of Hungary is the fastest qualifier. She went out really hard, in the preliminaries. World record still held by one of the greatest of them all in three Paralympic Games picked up 13 medals, Natalie does to it, still the world record Holder and is the first Paralympic swimmer to qualify automatically for the Paralympic Games and is an Olympian and paralympian. So too a host of the swimmers in the pool here. Ellie Cole is a name that's become almost synonymous with success and certainly among the favourites for the medal here. Again it's the youngsters that might cause a surprise. And stir the proverbable pot. Looking to get off to a good start. Quick reaction time from Zsofia Konkoly, the Hungarian, who was quickest off the blocks and has a decent under-water as well. The reigning European champion having claimed Gold in Funchal in Madeira in Portugal. Konkoly has the experience of one Paralympic Games behind her where she learnt a great deal and medaled in the 100 fly, one of her favourite events. She's shown a particular fondness for this event in recent years and is the European champion as a result. Ellie Cole, well, one of the stars of the rising Phoenix documentary that's gained so much prominence around the world. >> Right now you see Patterson, she's going out hard. This morning, she saved up for the final. I expect her no go way closer to her PB. Good split for her. Lack that Patterson was formerly an athlete. She beat an opponent who someone described as the best of all-time. She's dominating this event as well, which shows how good she is. Ellie Cole is trying to hang in there. She's so been training with the Campbell sisters in a sprint event. So the best she could do is to hang on to this, this isn't her specially though. Here, you see Lakeisha Patterson. >> She might only be 22 years old. Some call her Lucky Patterson, but she's really putting on a show. Somebody who's already got a Paralympic gold in this 400m freestyle, S8 she won in Rio in a 4 hadn't 40. She's incredibly quick and she's got some back-in speed as well which not everybody is able to compete with. Zsofia Konkoly is still up there. So too Toni Shaw off the shoulder of Patterson and Ellie Cole is starting to trail off a little. Lakeisha Patterson showing some real power. >> This is an interesting match-up for second, third and fourth because you have Toni Shaw and Zsofia Konkoly with the hand and then Ellie Cole who is a single leg amputee so she will have a hard time turning on the last 100 because she won't have the kick to back it up. Shaw and Konkoly, she won't want them getting too far ahead of her. >> Toni Shaw swam a good race in the preliminaries and she's wanting to show what she's capable of. She claimed a win in Dublin in Ireland three years ago in an event that she's looked to take from strength-to-strength. Swimming similar times to the 4:42 mark that she posted in Dublin all of three years ago. A bit of a move being made by the 19-year-old Hungarian now looking to put herself to within a body length of Lakeisha Patterson and nudge ahead of Toni Shaw who will nudge third. Patterson then Shaw. Ellie Cole is a little off the pace going into the final 100m. >> Zsofia Konkoly and Toni Shaw turning on the leg. They are going to make a charge for Lakeisha Patterson who won't be able to match the leg speed. Lakeisha's strategy with us to go out, stay out and stay strong. If Konkoly and Shaw, as soon as they start to use their legs, if they charge the last 50 and they are win striking distance, they have a very good chance of running down Lakeisha Patterson. >> Well, just taking a look at some of the others in the pool, while the focus is very much on Lakeisha Patterson and Zsofia Konkoly fighting for medal contention, she's done tremendous and is going to put the pressure on Patterson. The defending champion of 2017 is out of medal contention, as is Ellie Cole. Battle for gold. Into the final 50m they go. Konkoly up against Patterson. It's going to come down to who touches on the stroke. It's Patterson of Australia who claims the gold medal, 4:36.68 ahead of a 4:36.72, Toni Shaw of Great Britain gives Team GB their first medal in the pool here but what a swim and what a finish from Konkoly in particular, Patterson on the stroke managed to land it, just touching in fifth what a swim overall. Ellie Cole misses out finishing fourth. Lucky Lakeisha Patterson, nothing lucky about that! But her nickname is certainly lived up to with the gold medal. Zsofia Konkoly closing in so fast and I thought she timed her race to perfection. >> She needed another five metres to go but she has nothing to be upset about in that race. Here is Ellie Cole at the start. Very good getting in, but she should be because she's got a slow reaction time but she's good off the blocks typically. Here in the 400. There is Lakeisha Patterson, goes out early and establishes a dominating lead against the red rest of the field. She has to do this because, she does not have the leg strength to match up against toe Toni Shaw and Zsofia Konkoly on the way home. So she has to go out and stay and really continue to extend that lead the best that she can. Here she is on the wall. Right into the streamline and she pops up to the surface, can't really do that under water kick. Here at the finish, you can't tell, they are almost in line with each other, Zsofia Konkoly using ever everything that she has with her legs to come in. Almost out-touches her, but Patterson is able to hold her off. >> Sensational from Lakeisha Patterson, just when I thought that Konkoly timed her somewhere imto perfection. -- swim to perfection. So well timed from Patterson. All you need to do is touch first and she managed to do that, Zsofia Konkoly. The way she fought back, she was contesting for potentially a silver or bronze medal, a long way back, and in the final 100 she made it count. The defending champion finished
