hope everyone is having a a great week week zero of college football's over it is now officially week one felt a little weird doing college football watching college football just I don't know it's too hot out or something like that I'm not ready for it yet uh ready for some NFL football ready for some college football exciting interviews guests we have today a couple interviews I banked uh for at our baby um to save me some time knowing that when I have a baby I'm not going to have the time to do this type of stuff Ben troop Pat doly Ben played to Florida Pat will be first Ben will be after um Pat is a you know a local beat writer in gaino has been doing it forever local radio host been doing it forever someone I work with that's some media with down the beautiful Gainesville Florida great guy generous with his time to come on share some old Gator stories I still think the 20202 2012 team that I was a part of was the best most talented team in college football never to win anything we lost in a Sugar Bowl after being 13- one um loaded loaded with Talent all those guys a lot of them are still playing in the NFL Jeff Driscoll You Name It DJ Humphrey's our our whole group is um still in at least a lot of us um still trying to make it or free agents or what have you so great group great team great guys uh my the 2012 2013 group that I was able to spend some time with and and uh yeah it was a time so looking back D and I touch on that and then Ben troop comes on Ben droop big 84 played to Florida huge personality great guy podcast host dad I mean he gets to mix things up today is cut day in the NFL when this comes out at night August 27th I've been a part of this day this is the first year I have not been a part of it uh in a really long time uh my second year in the league I missed I wasn't a part of it but seven years and really my first fall not being in football uh since I was in sixth grade fifth grade right I play started six so it's a weird time for me thankful we have a child and plenty of things that distract me in this show and the Serious XM show that'll be starting on Tuesday nights in season Tuesday 7 to 8 o'clock at night the Players Point with Alec Engel on SiriusXM NFL radio super excited for that to start what a great opportunity that Sirius gives Alec and I two former NFL players to host our own show we absolutely love it have a blast with it and they're first class people there but yeah it's been weird it's it's been weird not being a part of a team to train like I have been as a free agent trying to get somewhere that's what it takes to get there and then not get there hey it is what it is I'm still going to train this year um take some time to get myself ready to go here for this workout wire in this grind so I'll explain a couple things here and then I'm going to send it over to dly first and then Ben so how this is going right now for just a free agent I'll say as a fly is flying around my office I have no idea why but um yeah so free agent wise U it's a tough time uh again from someone who's on the street not not with a team like a lot of people will be right now uh half the League's getting cut pretty much right so 90-man roster take it down to 53 add 16 to your practice squad these players can come from any team they don't just have to come inhouse the majority are in-house players but you know three four five may come off another team maybe one depends what you're trying to do and depends on the health of the guys who are starters for you or what you're trying to do to you know pop off your roster and make it have depth in each spot now you can have veterans on your practice squad with four years plus of experience any body can be on your practice squad before you only had a limitation in your practice squad which I hated for the veterans it cost guys money in careers that were good players that maybe were on the bottom of the rosters or at the end of their careers had a could out you know had a Payday or two but allow guys like me an opportunity a younger self to get on there and produce try to right so um yeah how this day goes for players is you wake up in the morning and you know you hope you don't have a Miss call I've done that even early like I'm an early riser and I had a Miss call something six six seven in the morning whatever it was getting cut from a team I was cut from the New York Giants I was cut multiple times from the Chicago Bears I had workouts with New Orleans workouts with Detroit didn't make those teams um workout again with the New York Giants did not make it back went to the aaf XFL Carolina Panthers got cut from them the first year signed back to the active roster the next day went to Carolina the next year made the active roster the only one I ever made at a training camp in 2021 um and then in 2022 got hurt decided against the injury settlement for the four weeks of practice squad pay and decided to be on the practice squad potentially take a short-term pickup for a long-term gain and stay in Carolina because I didn't want to give someone an opportunity to come in and take my job so that's kind of my journey and a brief little synopsis of getting cut and cut day and it's tough I mean I've been fortunate have an unbelievable support system um but in football there's no plan B I mean there's other things I do media and all this stuff and people that are U you know I don't respect or whatever think this is a distraction this is not distraction this is no I still lift train run there's only so much you can football you can do a day uh all my chips in are on football and they still are I want to play this year I want to play this year my goal is to play this year if I don't I'm going to retire but if I play this year and I still got it I'm going again because I feel great truly and I'm excited for the opportunity if one may come this year that workout wire what's it look like it's a Monday in season you just played on a Sunday they're bringing guys in for a position group whether maybe there's injuries in that position group or players aren't playing that well or whatever may be you'll come in there could be three tight ends two running backs two linebackers a Long Snapper and a kicker you know and they're just seeing who's out there you know they're evaluating players for maybe Futures deals and which is a offseason contract with a player bare minimum NFL bare minimum right so they're just constantly evaluating there's there's a pro scouting Department there's a college scouting Department there's a front office that's always there right there's levels to this so um yeah that's just a little tidbit for me business sports-wise but lots lots going on in the NFL everything's in pencil with this 53 man roster it will never be in pen there'll be a 53 man roster for a week one and that that roster will change every week probably throughout the year I would guess are pretty much pretty much so good luck to all the guys out there keep going when they cut you like my mom says make them say no to you three times and that's when you can move on UFL is a great League it played in the XFL and AF both great leagues go play in those leagues making 75,000 year playing football only working four months a year is a pretty damn good job go pick up a job in the offseason make a couple bucks that'd be my advice stick what you're doing you can't do it forever all right guys little Gator talk lot of pressure going on down there lot lot of pressure in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium one of the best stadiums in the world G to try to go to Florida Georgia this year again shout out to all my friends in Gainesville congrats Ryan McGriff newly engaged friend of mine football all right Gator preview we talked about it in the intro Ben troop and Pat dly joining me now legendary Gator reporter media person back in the day Pat a lot of Articles being written now your podcasts radio TV hits uh how has it changed since you've got started to what it is now big question I think we all know the answer technology but how has it really changed from your from your job and opportunities to get invol different thing covering Sports and the Florida Gators yeah it changed so much it drove me out I mean to be honest with you it was it got where it was not about substance anymore it was about quick hits and and and ignoring the game that you were covering and writing about something that had already happened and I I got to a point where I got old enough that I could retire and so I retired but I didn't want to quit I didn't want to get out of offering my voice up and I wanted to have a voice so I've been doing I wrote for Gator wire for for about three and a half years and I stopped doing that it was it was a lot very uh work intensive um and now so I do a a podcast twice a week I love doing that it's a lot of fun um had have spur on every Monday so that's great and you get a lot of former players a lot of media guys on and then Jeff and I do H radio TW every day um four to six and I write for wuf and uh a couple columns a week for them including the back nine so staying still staying busy but I do feel like I'm close closer to retirement than I was when I retired yeah that is a nice thing though with the podcast and all like the thing about the podcast is just great in my opinion is you can do what you want right especially if you don't have these big producers and these big shows and whatever but you could sit down and actually talk about like hey the third Drive of the game you know something I noticed and and dive into it and dissect it and break down and then go off on another level of it okay well this is why you know and then go off on another level of it and go back to a recruiting class four years ago and you not up against the clock with a radio show ticking down with a minute left and you're like well [ __ ] we didn't even get to what we prepared for I think honestly radio the good ones have turned it into more of a podcast where it's more free flowing in longer form is that what you and Jeff are all about or are you you guys are definitely not sticking to the hits like the old days no no we uh yeah we uh just we kind of let our callers go where it's going to go go and if they're if they're angry then it's going to be an angry show if they're happy it's going to be a happy show um you know as far as when we're actually doing the podcast it's uh you talk about guys who get going and I've had Ben troop on so I know how that goes but um we had Sam kavaris on um yesterday's podcast Sam Sam is one of the 49 voters in the NFL Hall of Fame so we're asking him why we can't get Fred Taylor into the Hall of Fame and he went on a long thing and and in it he's quoting tro palalo and Ray Lewis and all this and it's like will you sit back and you go let him go man this this is great stuff and uh it it's is you're right though you never feel like oh I've got to get this done within an hour I gotta make sure it's you know obviously you have breaks and um yeah radio but even then we go way past them we don't care yeah and the thing thing going good it's going good right when the material ends in a podcast it's end and that's it that's when the show's over so talk about the Fred Taylor point though I mean this a great player I played with Kelvin in Florida um big recruit coming in in 2013 my second year there um really good guy during my time there I don't I don't know him after but he was really a good teammate I enjoyed him um why no Fred Taylor Hall of Fame what were the bullet points well the bullet points were really they he didn't make many pro bowls and all pro teams uh although he probably should have there were a lot of great running backs that time um but most of these guys that he talks to they say he's the best running back I ever played against you know and so uh he there's three guys that average I think 5.6 a carry some number like that that Sam was telling me and it's uh it was Jim Brown um some other great player I can't remember who it was and Fred Taylor and so you know those are the kind of stats you look at and you go look this guy scored way more touchdowns than Thurman Thomas Thurman Thomas in the Hall of Fame so we want to see Fred get in there and um I want to see lus Brown get in there too the trouble I have with the Florida hall of fame or the Florida Ring of Honor um Colin is that it it you can get in being a great Pro even if you were just a good college player um and that's really to be honest is what Fred Taylor was he was a really good college player he had a good senior year couple of games that were really outstanding but would I consider him a Hall of Famer in college football no but you get in a Hall of Fame in the in the pros you get into the Ring of Honor that to me they're they're they they aren't related you know and and that bothers me uh that's why lus Brown who's the best offensive linean iish saw at Florida covered Florida forever should be in the hall but until he gets in the Hall of Fame he can't that seems stupid to me yeah they're two separate beasts right like did you have a great college career pro career almost different Sports they are again I've referenced the Adam brenaman show next up if you're really into college football listen to this and you want to hear different coaches and different things he was talking on his show and he's he's asking like the boore and all these different coaches you know what would you change he said i' bring the hash marks in to make it more um you know of an NFL type situation where they're a little bit tighter because now college and I think it's that's why the rpos are good and that's why all these things have happened is like well why are we going to run an NFL offense which I ran with mus champ and he wanted to bring the Sabin type stuff to Florida when I was there and that's why I was recruited there as a blocking tight end but like we like eventually you're like well why don't we just spread everybody out and whatever the defense gives us we're just going to check to it and use it right like Nick Sabin is quoted saying you know I I gotta change my expectations of how many points a game I can allow I think it was I don't know what it was it was in the teens and then he added like five points to it so let's let's touch on but before we get into the Gators and dive real deep into it obviously you cover Florida forever uh you cover Nick he's the greatest coach of all time I think in college I don't know really debatable the guy's impact on college football I don't really think could be measured especially financially um for Alabama to be good it's really good for football um neither here nor there you know what's what's the cliche question that's not going to get a cliche answer like what's his legacy of course we know the Legacy but what's like his impact and maybe a little impact on Florida and a story you may have with s yeah you know I uh I I kind of um warmed up to Sav I will be honest with you when I remember the day we were at the uh 06 national championship game and um the day he was announced to be the new Miami coach and I I I was watching the press conference and I we were with a bunch of media guys and I go guys this is the most you're ever going to talk to him because I knew what how hard he was to deal with however from that point I got to where you would hear things especially during covid things leaked out where uh recruiting pitches would end up on the Internet stuff like that and the more I listen to him the more I go this guy gets it man he understands everything and he knows how to make players better and how to make teams better and I became a Sabin fan I mean other than when they played Florida I think I rooted for him almost every game he coached um yeah because he just I just love the way he did things and the the fact that he got out uh because he didn't want to have guys coming and go what you paying me coach you know um so that that's good and then watching him on the SEC network he's clearly the best person on there he not even close he starts explaining football to me and they go oh now I get it now I understand he is so good D and and all these clips going viral of his press conferences over the years are just so good the musim Muhammad story where they try to you know whatever he did at Michigan State and he's like what do you want me to do kick him off Camp kick him off the team and Matt rule did I questioned one of the players on the team when I was at Temple great player okay guy and I'm and he's like where you want me to send him Colin he like pulled me in his office because he heard I was complaining about him where do you want me to send him and I was like whoa I thought I was going to the office for like a good conversation and he laid into me he was a great football coach and a friend now but I learned that lesson he's like when we send him back to the streets he's going to die and then I got to sleep at night knowing he's that's on my conscious I'm going to I'm gonna break him here to be a good guy and he did but neither here nor there the U and I know Urban was before you but uh where Urban had a kid and he got in drug trouble and he hit somebody and you're not allowed to hit women and they kicked him off and a year later he committed suicide or he was a a drug overdose and so that that haunts him every day you know and um that's tough it is not easy to deal with something like that and was needs to be like listen the players on in purgatory like is on the team like the players going into to like the halfway home here before we kick them off the team there needs to be like a supplemental team like you because what are you gonna do and and I get it it's a reflective it's big business on University um yeah sabin's incredible um I think we're about to get that in football with Tom Brady on the professional side these guys that are kind of brutally honest too and yeah they're they're Legends they're the best ever to do what they did but they're kind of it's the new world like yeah you can share your ideas and stories and thoughts like it's okay like this helps that's why he makes act that's why Tom's gonna make act that's why Sabin can probably pick his number right but at the end of the day he's a gift um and I'm a big fan of that's why I was became a lightning fan even know I'm a big-time Flyers fan I I like dynasties I want to see people become dynasties and it's so hard to just win multiple games we won in my and Carolina I don't know five six and four games and I thought we had some solid teams it's hard to win will mus champer we had unbelievable players is hard to win let alone win consistently okay Florida Gators um let's get into them lot to unpack first off I want to talk about nil first and what's that look like down there in game Hot Topic in in football big money there's a salary cap coming from people I'm talking to how's that going to work with title 9ine I think that's a healthy alternative spread some money out get some guys some players maybe maybe people make real money for their name image and likeness not just like pay to play and supply and demand in the transfer portal Etc talking about how it's been you know how's it been received with the big boosters of Florida and have they been able to fill out a roster that can compete in the SEC well it is I think they obviously got to a really bad start the collective they put together was not good and it was a it was a mess and they were people were promising things and they were going through boosters and it just was a mess and I of course they're being sued for it uh although I don't think I think it'll get settled I don't think it's going to be that big a deal uh by rashada but um they have it under control now and they've got it under in professional hands and they're doing things the right way and they've increased the money and they're able to compete now are they able to compete with Ohio State no are they able to speak compete with auburn which is porn a lot of money in Tex S&M teams like that no but they're able to compete and then you just got to get guys ready and get them ready to play and have better do a better job of coaching um but I mean I don't I would say Florida's probably in the uh in the six or seven range in terms of the 16 teams in the league maybe maybe lower than that um but they they got off to a bad start and so they're getting better um but when a school comes in and offers $66,000 a month to one of your running backs I mean what are you gonna do you know it's just hard to do you know not everybody's made of that kind of money you can only go to those big boosters so many times so it is what it is I hope that this thing does get to a point where we don't turn people completely off I'm I'm I'm a big believer that college football is idiot proof okay that and I'm one of the idiots and I will be sitting there watching Florida State and Boston or who are they playing uh Georgia Tech in Dublin uh on on the 24th I will be watching that game because I love college football and I'll I'll let that nil and portal stuff go out I will have trouble finding remember oh was he at Michigan State or or you know I can't where did he come from but um it is it it is what it the NCAA let it become because they didn't do things the right way for a long time and now they got they got caught up in it and that's why the NCAA is uh just trying to hold on by its fingernails but U yeah it's in it's an interesting concept and you better evolve you better adapt or you're gonna get left behind yeah I think people from again Adam show they're talking about different things that the right people are starting to get in charge of the NCA they're starting to be conversations because starting to be conversations because at the end of the day the NCA has absolutely nothing to do with this college football playoff National Championship I believe they don't get a dime from it pretty sure March Madness they get every they get every dime from it right March Madness is their big Cash Cow yeah and that's what they use to run things like okay so yeah yeah and our Gator women's team is very good here as we're having some tech issues here we should be fine we'll just plow right through it um okay so we touched on a little bit of nil it's interesting stuff there I think there's going to be a salary cap I think there's going to be some changes um this this current team in Florida Billy Napier is playing for his coaching for his job uh I think from what I'm hearing on different Avenues uh that right the team's better than people think uh you followed it closely over the years how do they match up talent-wise do they have some game changers how are they in the trenches are they going to be able to withstand this schedule that's pretty deep in state and then of course playing the big boys across the SEC yeah um well it's an interesting time here right now because just yesterday the president of the University resigned so um we're gonna see where that goes Ben sass um whether he was moved out or moved out on his own I know he has a wife that still um is and nobody knew anything about him because he didn't talk to the Press so we don't we don't really know whe whether he was mad with where this football program was going on doesn't matter anymore he's not a factor so they'll bring in somebody else and who knows um I'm sure it'll be from that side of the aisle because that's what the uh head of the Board of Regents is on that side of the aisle so we'll see what he looks at um you have an ad that's also in a little bit of hot water because he's hired a football coach hasn't been successful and he hired a basketball coach he's now coming into his own that seems to have been a good hire and he also was they had a disaster in both soccer and women's basketball not that you care about that but it's a big deal around here you know with um uh the heat that may be on Scott Strickland now he has done everything really well in terms of facilities in terms of being a booster raise uh money raising type guy for with the boosters uh I love Scott he's a great guy uh one of the best people I know he's well respected around the industry and everything um so that so the question is I always talk about this Colin There's real heat and there's perceived heat real heat is when the ad and the president are are are not happy and they're they're hearing it from boosters perceived heat is when the media's not happy and that's when it was like this guy's on the hot sea according to Hot Seat coaches hot seat.com and I'm like I don't think he's on a hot seat um now that said if he goes four and eight he is on a hot seat there's no question about it because at some point you got to win games that's the thing I I I'm trying to caution Gator fans about the schedule's not any harder than it was a year ago it was hard last year okay it may be a little harder who would you rather open with Miami at home or Utah on the road okay they're right away we've won that one so last year SCH was hard um it's far as hard though right that's the point of that place like let's not remember let's not forget like what like Florida in many years is compared to you know Texas and compared to like comparing Florida to Auburn right like Auburn had a couple good like are they really but you're telling me they're beating them in nil like that should be unacceptable right like Florida should be in the top four in the SEC now Oklahoma and Texas come in right that makes it a little harder but still they should be in the top whatever so continue I'm sorry but like they shouldn't be competing with in my opinion South Carolina Missouri should be yeah but yeah that's the thing I mean like you said um the um there's a line from Tom Hanks in the League of Their Own he says um it's supposed to be hard the hard is what makes it great you know I mean and I think the players look at this schedule and they go all right man you open up with Miami and then we got gotta go to Tennessee and we got all these great games and look at the back end of the schedule look how much fun that's going to be they see it that way they don't look at and go oh gosh how are we going to get through this um and you know that as a player I mean you don't want to go play Samford I mean you'll go and you'll P pile up some stats Urban you just call them stat games but you know why I like them D because the game would be at noon and that means I'd be at swamp by about 4:30 they would you would just have that cocktail right up there on the on the they'd be on the bar they wouldn't they wouldn't even ask you for what you wanted it would just be there I would come up in my walking boot and uh and and I have a cold beer and I was like this is great side note when I knew I was in the right place I played at Tennessee it was 2012 we beat him again and I was walking home from the swamp because the traffic was so bad I couldn't get out or my Don scooter couldn't start some wild story and actually end up breaking my foot like that game and didn't really kind of was uncomfortable but the adrenaline whatever I'm walking home I was nobody there high recruit didn't perform and I had some people were whipping beers at me like from the tailgate going right behind like the stadium I lived like a mile north of the stadium Half Mile North right behind JJ Finley so whatever road that is right there yeah yeah yeah yeah it's great place and the people are throwing beers Colin great game I played in garbage time and play on Kick every ter so I didn't mean to cut you off but that's what I knew when I tell the the gator stories people are underhand tossing me Natty lights I'm like ah this is perfect for me it's a great place man oh it is a great place I've lived here Mo most of my life I lived in St Augustine for a long time but yeah I like it here and um but you know when we look at this year's team people are like they're almost going into it with one eye open you know they're like hope they gonna be better I'm tired of be having losing teams but the bottom line here Colin is it comes down to can they play defense they haven't played defense in four years um his historically bad every year last year you know how many interceptions they had three more than you that's not uh they just don't create turnovers they haven't done it for for those four years um and I always tell people you know you get great offense you create turnovers to start at the 12 and then and go in and then next thing you know youve scored seven points and that counts the same as you know anything so um they've got to get better they seem to brought in a lot of guys through the portal that are going to help them they were playing out there A lot of times with uh you know like six freshman in the starting lineup true freshman um guys have grown up Jason Marshall needs to have a big year somebody's got to play safety that that is GNA hit people and that's gonna uh catch the ball when it's thrown to them you know I mean to me that is the whole thing is if and and they got to get pressure on the quarterback so all the problem is right now to me on defense I know Graham mer is going to be Graham Ms I know Montreal Johnson's good I think the line's going to be fine um you know you got Trey Wilson out there uh they they need a second great receiver they had him last year they had two this year they don't they only really have him so there's a couple there's some things on offense they need to get better at but it's they've got to get better on defense I want to go back to your point about college football being idiot proof now we've covered a lot of Gator stuff I think too for the Gator to G just because we had some tech issues so I got off my point about being idiot proof and I moved it along because I lost my train of thought but happened to me yesterday doing my podcast I was like uh uh let's go back to the Gators what do you think what do you think who knows yeah I would say you know the idiot proof stuff oh there the Florida Point again before I get to idiot proof it I think if you're it sounds bad but right when you're trying really NE is in some sort of a rebuild or whatever you're trying to do trying to get Florida back to the the mountain top of college football top 10 Team 15 team in the country every year and now that's good you're in the playoffs it's not that sound as like challenging as it was before you could sneak in a back door way to the playoffs and be the 12th or 11th SE I think nine and three gets floorida in yeah right you get right in because you have that schedule that strength of schedule so to me it's like did we show that wow the things that we weren't good at we got better at defensively wow we were able to score at will at times so we have some kickoff returns and punt turns and the things that that were Staples that were in the even the mush champ DJ Durkin Dan Quinn type situation um you know Jeff Collins who I would got to know a temple uh those like big time Big Time plays when you need them the most defensively and then progression in the right way so excited for the season but as we wrap up idiot proof I completely agree it's idiot proof uh in my father-in-law I'm wearing an LSU football hat and a temple shirt too I'm a hodge podge I'm a I'm a free agent once I got once Florida broke my heart and medically disqual me I became a free agent with my fandom and my teams but neither here nor there uh it is you know the sky falling and all you know all the get off my lawn crowd with nil and all this stuff and whatever and I looked around one day and we're at a bar or was the holidays and we were at someone's house and it was packed we're watching a game and I'm like this feels like 2012 like it feels the same like I this whole oh my God it's hard it's it's the same you're right the difference sure where' this player go and how and I thought it was going to be kind of big difference like wow is this going to be developmental how's it going to go are players going to be able to develop they say the product's still great there's still juice around it the ball games are that aren't aren't big ones are still boring kind of that that's that's been the bit you know that's been the kind of constant the last like five five years but before that they were fun so I think with the expansion of the playoffs the salary cap coming title n is going to get VI like I said but which is fine everyone's going to get a little bit of something which I think is great especially at these big universities where you're getting it's Florida you're getting just more than an education and and an athletic you know dominance as they are as campus-wide um so like you said I don't think it I think it's idiot proof and I think it's actually in a great state and I think it will kind of the pendulum will swing back and it will get into a good place yeah I I do too but the the other thing though that I did do say is uh Colin I think you would agree with this five years years from now you can't tell me what it's going to look like because we could have just two super conference and everybody else is playing for for the Bahamas bow you know I mean we don't we we don't know we don't know if there'll be a cap if I mean five years from now there still could not be a cap um there's just a lot of things questions we don't even have the format for next year's playoff yet they're waiting till after this year's playoff to make that decision because they want to see how it goes so it's still a inlux you know this whole new college football and you know I I still think that there should be some limits on transfers you know it used to be as you know the coaches had all the power and they could they could kick you out and and you were screwed you know U now the players have all the power and and I think there's got to be some kind of a compromise there you know where players can't transfer seven times it just seems to be ridiculous to me if a Coach lead I think you should be able to go um yeah yeah I agree with that yeah yeah like a temple I'll never forget when Jeff Collins was coming in I didn't know Jeff was coming in but they went to a spread offense if I would have stayed in that spread offense I would have died as a pro style tight end I would have died on the vine and thank God what like rule state through 2016 right Florida when rer came in I would have died on the vine you know like it it would have been you know who knows Jake mge was perfect for it right Kent Taylor that type of body type perfect for it um ghouls be my we're continuing our Gator pre-season preview the nice thing about having your own show Ben is you get to kind of make your own rules and I said you know what I W to I want to talk some Gator football it's been a minute I've had a lot of people talking to me lately about my time there I was on D's uh Pat D's radio show with Jeff a couple weeks ago and I said you know what I gotta have these guys on do a little preview so my former 84 tight end brother this man had a lot more plays and a lot more catches than I did I think I probably played 20 20 30 40 plays there I don't know and then I got hurt and that was it so Ben troops joining us legendary tight end NFL tight end and Gator Legend as well how you doing man always good being up with you KY man we got to do this more we do man we've we've been trying to make it work I said I gotta get bent on let's do it so what do you up to man what's going on in your world I know you're the former NFL player that that that struggle as I'm my C is coming to an end it's harder than you think you could prepare for it I I've got so many different things I could do off the field and working and staying busy but to pull trigger on something and say this is what I'm going to do has been really hard for me I'm going to try to go one more year uh see how it goes if it doesn't work I I'll hang them up so you got a great story you missed it go back Javon Dex the ones that came on the show that they came out of respect because of who they thought who they thought I was look man I'm I'm a former Gator and I appreciate you guys coming on but it's being able to talk to women gymnastics you know soccer Parker Valby who is Parker Valby right now is going to the Olympics she's she's the greatest athlete right now in Florida Sor sorry Graham Ms but if you can't run 10 miles and come through the finish line and look at your clock and go oh man I broke the record like not even sweating yeah yeah and I I I will say this uh my um I got two new podcasts coming one will be the B true podcast where I get to just sit down and just have conversations with people outside of sport and uh my sports podcast going to be called No weddings in the fall and it's all in the name like just talking about you know college football NFL football because I'm like you KY I look at it like this if I don't like somebody else take I give my own that way I can appreciate what they said and I can give you what I said and I get out of the way I I've been enjoying it I really really have because and let me say this because K you are in the uh Twilight of your career as we want to call it we coming to we coming to the end there is a light we staring at that light at end the tun let me tell you what you've done that you don't give yourself enough credit for you have started career Two while you have career one that is not something I understood most of us in our careers football is no longer you know our first love you know we we we you know as you say we we married now we got kids now kids on the way I didn't understand the importance of my plan B starting while I had plan a if I if I knew now what I knew back then oh man I would have definitely because it puts you ahead of the curve for this reason one it makes walking away a little bit easier because I already have my identity away from sport what's hard is my identity was in sport and now sport is ending so who am I outside of sport well Colin said well I know who I am outside of sport let me start pushing that you don't believe me Shannon sharp is way more popular than he ever was when he was a player because he showing you this is who I am yes I was a Hall of Fame tight end would I'm made it4 I imagine imagine Shannon show while he was playing oh my goodness listen if you want to know the blueprint of how to do it Ryan Clark did it the best Ryan Clark while he was playing started interning with ESPN in off season and that that became a uh that became uh you know he he got a contract with him I think he's one of the best people in sports he is doing it and I think the thing what you're doing now Colin is you're letting people people are rooting for Colin Thompson the person who just happens to play if they only rooting for you because you're playing it's hard to Parlay that even if you are all pro Super Bowl champ that that those kind of things are great but you already have your identity and now this what this what a lot of players won't say the same players who got all the notoriety all the prestige while they were playing they gonna be coming to you when they come to this when they when it comes to this uh side of the road they gonna be like hey how do I do this KY and you gonna be like yeah but you you know you made $100 million the money will not do matter doesn't so I I commend you I commend you on thank you buddy deciding hey man I all these people taking a chance on me whether it's University of Florida you know where it's Carolina P these people saw something in Colin and say hey man your brand is big enough to help our brand you go wait a minute my yeah you got a brand what you don't big Brands only only partner with other brands that's why Lebron is with Nik you know things like that so listen continue to build your brand continue to show the world number one we are more than just football players because if we don't do it they're not gonna they're not gonna see us ass and when it's time to walk away you know what people gonna say they're gonna say wait a minute you was playing football the whole time you that's that's the greatest compliment is when someone says wait a minute man you were doing both there are people that don't know that LL cooj was a rapper because they've only seen him on TV right there are people that don't know that Michael Strahan is a Hall of Fame DM unbelievable so that's so that's the greatest part when someone says yeah man um it was always I would say this Colin I think you were always GNA be in this position it just football gives us a boldness because you know football makes you have to be be bold I got to play in m in front of millions of people I make mistakes for the world to see now it's saying let's get behind this mic let's talk let's talk sports let's talk life let's talk you know people appreciate when Channon Crowder who's on the pivot played with Channon a couple of years in Florida you know he's a he's a he's a you're younger than me what you see shanon Crowder do on TV is how he was that is exct now he's much way more Reserve now if you can believe it but when I reach out to Channon he said he said I love what you're doing he said whenever you need me I will come to where you at we will do it live in person like you sitting down he has his on uh seasoning called Crow powder send it to me for free I mean I'm telling you you got more Connections in this you know uh you got more Connections in this business than you know Colin just reach out to me anybody I got you got but I commend you man because like I said the hardest thing for us to do is Believe in Us root for us cheer for us cuz every everybody else do it and Advocate you gota Advocate which is like you're one of one I mean my I have listen I have a nephew in college right now uh shout out to my my nephew Christian up there watch bur up there in Topeka Kansas I got another nephew uh his younger brother he's going to be a singer this year and I tell him the same thing I said treat football like C and sip it you have to sip it we're used to go listen we treat football the same way when we drink a Gatorade we go in that thing but the only time you taste something you go was when it first hit your mouth and that last go you ain't tasting it between you ain't tasting it I said because we don't understand how blessed and privileged we are to have done what we've done we are the one of ones most people ain't going past high school and I'm talking the best player you ever played with because I went to another school and I got to see okay what this other division one school Temple was like compared to compared to Florida the community of Florida was tremendous so I digress um what a great place to be an athlete I want to say that first student social life loved it uh Billy Napier third year tough schedule I'm hearing the roster a little bit better than people think I'm hearing they're going to win two games I'm hearing they're actually G to have a great year what do you think on the gator this season in Billy Napier I think I think uh I think reality is going to have to meet perception because obviously perception and when I say perception I'm talking about a gamesville I'm not talking about outside of Gainesville I'm saying you know uh Graham M deciding to come back was the biggest decision of the off season uh bringing a guy like Will Harris from USC to help that uh defensive back field Montreal Johnson decided to come back and not move on the green of passes being the leading uh Russia coming back in SEC sharing up that offensive line uh third year means I got my guys if I come in the first year that's not my guys right second year I'm trying to get my guys in okay third year means I've instilled my uh culture two years in a row I got a quarterback because you know how it is kweather high school college approach you ain't got a quarterback it's gonna be a daunting Tas I don't care what the team around you is belief though when you got belief throughout this team you know you bring in some big time transfers you know we talking about uh Shamir Di and you get Elijah Badger to go along with Eugene Wilson you talk about you know Austin Barber and that offensive line you got the pieces now here comes Miami Here Comes Here Comes uh UCF Here Comes FSU you playing everybody in the State of Florida but USF FAU and fi I mean you literally playing the whole state of Florida not to mention got to go to Texas which I love that though I love that they're playing it to me when we were with M champ his his his Mantra was you know win the East beat the state and that was our and it was crystal clear um and we lost to the state when I was there Miami and Florida State in the same year when Florida State won the national title but I think it's cool it hurts recruiting if you lose them but it's really cool it's really cool that they're playing in state and then you said they're going to Texas I mean they play all the big they're going to Texas I I will say this the thing about Billy na sometimes uh great things don't happen to great people instantly I do from what I hear about him uh you know he seems to be and this is something you can attest to I asked Anthony Richardson this I said what makes Billy nap or Billy napy he says you can call him and he'll pick up or he'll text you back I go ahead coach you do that like yeah and you know how rare that is K wait wait wait y'all have his number yeah you tell us to call him he'll call us now mind you Anthony Richardson is a different Beast this he's gonna call the you know the freak quarterback back but but all other players are said so for me I think the per ction around Gainesville is you know I know uh Josh pton have been down there you know a bunch of people have been down there they got the pieces they got the resources they got the recruits they got the quarterback they got some new coaches they got the scheme you gotta win BEC now when I say gotta win I don't mean you gotta be no nine 10 win team but you got to make a bowl game for this reason going seven and whatever eight and whatever this year with this schedule is SEC Coach of the Year type stuff when you look at who you playing out of conference and in conference you got Miami Florida State and UCF out of that's your and UCF now UCF is no joke it's not UCF listen uh uh they got some players now you know he got some players down there and and and mind you the big thing in the State of Florida is the big three you know Florida Florida State Miami UCF wants to be a part of that conversation so bad but you know J like I know Kyler it's gonna take a lot to go from Big Three to Big Four it's gonna take a lot now UCF gonna have something to say when you talking about listen Miami versus Florida that's a recruiting game that's first game of the year Florida versus Florida State that's a recruitment game UCF so a lot of things gonna be put to rest but that's why you play the game uh No One's Gonna feel sorry for Florida no matter what happens Graham MC is saying all the right things but It Don't Mean a Thing If you don't win so as as much as I want that reality and that perception reality and perception hardly ever meets anytime ever in life but with football you kind of got to they got to at least you know be in the same building they might not be in the same room they might be across the hall but they need to they need to be aware of each other and look that first month of the season for Florida will decide because that Gauntlet at the at the latter part of the season if they come out of the first six games four- two five and one cuz you know that because Old Miss oh my God Old Miss is coming to Florida at the end of the year that that's going that's and they're looking to go to Atlanta this year with the team they have so hey man you got Texas you got Oklahoma you know you're adding them they don't lack any Talent talk about Georgia they the be they the best team in the country right now LSU not gonna be down for long Auburn is a question mark oh miss supposed to go that so hey Florida's in the mix you want you gota you know what $7.2 million not counting his money that's a lot of money for a guy that hasn't won yet and like I said Kirby Smart makes $12 million a year he's a high paid coach of college football he won two national championships if Billy napia wins nine games makes a college football playoff he'll go from seven to 10 without without and the reason why I say that is is because this Colin at the end of the year is gonna be about two things what do we do with the first part of the year and who's healthy because I know everybody's waiting on DJ lagway but that's supposed to be 2025 if he's in the game that's not a good thing it's not a good thing if he's in the game because either one the game is out of hand or two you you start is hurt so for me I say seven and six and as long as as long as one of those seven wins are like a old Miss or God forbid a Texas I don't think you gonna beat Georgia this year I just I just don't see it happening and for me you know how it is ky progress in football is a game by game thing like if you lose in college it's how you lost how did you look when you lost and if you beat a team you wasn't supposed to beat that's the progress because they're not going to go undefeated Florida's never had an undefeated season but you win seven games with this schedule and and a couple of those wins are Texas or Old Miss or LSU because we got to beat Kentucky Kentucky didn't beat Florida last three years in a row so I think that seven and six one make sure I I do not think that uh bill is gonna lose his job because he got DJ lagway yeah because I got the kid for the future I think that keeps him his job in 2025 but I got to have something to pull from a 2024 so 2024 means hey were we respectable were we a solid tier two team in the SEC I say tier two I we cannot be tier three anymore cannot be Bottom Feeders right Panda belt can't be telling Florida what y'all doing down here you know I'm it can't be that missou cannot be tier two and Florida's beer you can't do that so even though you no longer have the vision but seven and six you you show some because there are no more divisions um and you showing some from the from what's to come I think I think that's that's you know even though I mean that's where we've come when you talk about the University of Florida because I got to be realistic yes I got orange and blue uh you know glasses on yes I'm always gonna be biased but we got but we got it culture in college it is culture quarterback team that that's how you get you get the culture right you get the you said what about the coach well a coach can't if a Coach got to coach a quarterback a team long as they don't got do not mess that up just don't mess that up I think right now the culture is there I think the quarterback is there that third one the team we will see because I don't know you know and Crystal balling coming down in Miami cam Ward coming over watching State they gonna have something to say but that's what I love I mean what four years removed from no about five years removed from Dan Mullen first game against Miami had a bunch of Miami Hurricanes come on my show talking trash talking about they wanted to bet some money never got to the BET part though you know why because because let me tell you something and I know the Miami fans if you're listening you can't talk trash about the ACC if you've never won it y'all talking about the Big East you've never won the ACC which is not good for Miami it's but but but but I am looking forward to it though I I really really am I'm happy for you though KY man you know the big news you know here in a couple of days I'm happy in what I be seeing you and what you be doing and I appreciate it because you don't know how what somebody said how do you make what you doing worth doing and I was asked that like what makes a person want to do something they see somebody else doing basketball soccer and the greatest thing about it is they gonna say at guard y TR and she runs out right and I'm like that's my kid like for forget I don't care how many points she scor that that listen that is the greatest thing is somebody comes up and say that's your daughter right there yeah you that's you yeah oh man I know it's like that that's the thing is you get to see a little you break everything in the house tear up everything I'm talking about they gonna break stuff that they that that you that you couldn't break how did you break this but the first time she says Daddy just pull out just pull out just pull out the uh don't even don't just let the tears come just I'm telling you just let them come or if you got a screen door if they still make screen doors have a glass screen door that she can see you get out the car and she's beating on the glass oh man like like d you you like let me come in the house and then they start walking and talking and asking for cell cheese puffs they're like sir I I need sh I'm in here for 10 minutes and I need to be un chaotic so she can eat the she can ice cre I I tried to give ice cream one time my mom was like no so but enjoy it man I I would say Enjoy the greatest thing I will ever do is my kids I can never duplicate that so and you already married the greatest decision you gonna make is who the man the second greatest decision to make is who you procreate with you us don't want to do with the same person usually and you and you you master that so you a genius already man you they right there in the house they that
