a labor day week weekend feels like the last weekend of Summer right isn't that that kind of the feel to Labor Day lot of pools close Etc it's full on Fall it's cold in the mornings now yeah you got a jacket on I feel like people flee to the mountains the Labor Day always felt to me like a driving holiday okay I don't know why does that make any sense I don't have any stats to back that up maybe it's just my own personal experience but it felt like when I was doing Labor Day I was driving somewhere camping in the mountains or whatever how was Labor Day when you were working at Sears a lot of good sales lot of good deals yeah because they do well it's like when we talked we talked about it with Cindy no we talked about it with uh with David uh yesterday yesterday where well people just throw sales out there because they're catchy gimmics and really you're not like you're not giving them like there's a sale every day they come up with some gimmick every day where it it just isn't the the bargain that you think it is right that they pretend it is so no offense to good people at Sears but it felt like every holiday had like the world's greatest time to buy a washer yeah they will these prices will never be this low again you have to put it on your Sears card and that interest rate is a little rough but you know what best deal ever we were talking about yeah Labor Day what I I don't know yeah sure also talking about companies masquerading as Furniture businesses or whatever when really they are just lay away big interest collecting corporations but uh we had funded Peach that is not what Peach does peach is there to customize your home no but if Sears had a sale on something all of the time did you uh speaking of which quick quickly before we get to the top three stories did you find any deals on uh ESPN Plus or what was your solution last night I just did the stupid bundle so did I you and I are both out $16 now $16 a month for the foreseeable future I'm paying for Hulu twice now I've got two Hulu accounts if anyone wants my other one just hit me up you have a I got it on Black Friday it's like a dollar a month so now I have two Hulu accounts and I have Disney plus which I already had access to and now I have ESPN Plus I will say it worked well I didn't have any issues with it like the interface is clean it didn't uh lag at all so I was able to rewind when I missed something I was watching the fourth quarter of the Colorado game and I got to rewind and watch the first half of the third quarter of the Utah game and catch up I enjoyed that but wheel R out of the back field he's wide open makes the catch at the 40 20 10 touchdown Utes they've already got one of those big plays the 64 yd touchdown pass if they got another one yes they do welcome back brt keithy touchdown Utes Stanley out of the backfield releases it's the same play a wheel route and he's going to take it the distance no Flags touchdown Utah 79 [Applause] yards uh Utah looked good predictably I thought that and I'm trying to look for the guy's name I thought the announcer on ESPN plus should probably look for a different line of work you thought he struggled I'm glad you bring that up because I had that same thought they were they were awful I didn't think the analyst was as bad I thought the analyst had energy and I thought the analyst NL Guy what's his name um I don't I wasn't but I I actually didn't mind the the analyst as as much but the play byplay guy was brutal and like I don't know my even my wife got annoyed he uh he said at one point thatth this this stadium was built for the Olympics in 2002 it's like well that's not true really I mean it was expanded for the Olympics in 2002 but uh was not built uh somewhere Bob rice is like hey hey it was a round before any who uh Ben they're going to throw it a lot this year I mean that was my kind of what I was looking for from this game was at the beginning what was the game plan going to be all about was it were they going to force the Run game what were they going to do when they had their choice you know what were we going to see and they threw the ball per near every time so maybe maybe we will finally see a Utah offense that is allowed to sling it around I'm not betting on it uh I thought a lot of what we saw was setting up that you have to pay attention to dejon Stanley every single time he's on the field now and he might not catch another pass all year of course that's hyperbolic he will but you throw that wheel rout you throw that wheel route twice and guess what every single time he lines up in the back field now you have to have eyes on him if not one maybe two because he's got stupid speed he is really really fast he has Texas track speed that is a fast fast person so you have to have somebody with an eye on him coming out of the back field and then you probably have to have a safety pay attention to him as well so that's a I don't want to call it a gimmick it's good football strategy but run that play a bunch early on and guess what now you have to pay attention for the next 11 games plus Bowl Games Etc that guy always is going to be a weapon so that's a great option and then what happens oh well you've got a pretty decent tight end and Brandt keithy who's out there catching three touchdowns in the first half including one dragging four SU players into the Utah end zone for a touchdown Which was the most impressive play of the game but I I thought a lot of that was just show you can throw go back to the Run game at some point and by the way djon Stanley just might be the running back he just might be the best playmaker they have uh what' you think of the dance with with rising and keithy whatever that's fine needs needs some work needs some refining and those guys are old it's like old guys dancing I've seen my dad dance looks like he's holding the lunch tray kind of couple little steps here and there he hasn't danced so much anymore and I'm picking up the steps now but yeah that's what those guys do old guys they're not breaking it down I don't need him to just contained Utah has a dance school a decent dance school yeah enlist some help they could probably is it right across from the library probably find a little little routine and be a little better I'm not hating where's ray gun from the Australian Olympic break dancing team bring ray gun up I have heard you a couple of moves how to break it down I thought Utah looked better than I expected if I'm being honest I thought they were a little bit sharper uh a couple of the things that we talked about I thought were still questions how would two young tackles do and there were some issues where Cam probably didn't have as much time as he wanted obviously Isaac Wilson was surprised at how quickly the pocket can collapse on his first his first snap so uh I thought there was still some work to be done there but Utah's D tackles were great defensive ends were okay linebackers were great you shut A team out you're in good shape um a couple of I mean I guess if uh if we're going to nitpick observations um I thought Mike Mitchell dropping the ball was not a good sign for him just because fumbling is fumbling and interceptions are there I I don't they're they trigger it's one thing does not allow like it's his it's his thing uh I'm sure in your relationships Ben you've you've uh known what will set your significant other into a spiral of like even if it's just a minimal thing it's it's going to be that that's interceptions and and fumbles and we saw we've seen players at both positions struggle with overcoming a kind of a I don't know what you'd put it with Tav on Thomas it had to be a mental block to be mental early on yep he went from he couldn't even carry it fumbled it like four five times in one game yep to it didn't drop the ball for the rest of the year you remember that like all of a sudden he did not drop the ball for the rest of the year and was the best running back in the league I don't it's got to be attention to detail of just ball security and I'm not going to pretend I can get into that and the depths of that as a running back coach but that's got to be what it is yeah it's just the attention to detail where you get too excited being on the field that you stop paying attention to the basics and now now with with Isaac Wilson you know and this is so unfair for his first action and I hope it's not true but now in the back of some coaches mind it's going to be like oh those two picks though yeah oh man we got to go to uh let's go to our second quarterback oh those oh man those two picks the and they were bad I mean they were the the pick in the end zone was just a horrible throw just a terrible decision you might have had a route that was wrong on his first touchdown I I don't know but the second one was just a horrendous decision and floated the ball and there was nowhere to go and then lo and behold Caleb loner catches a touchdown on what was probably the best pass of the game from anybody that back shoulder throw to the pylon was awesome I can't believe it it was awesome I was so I was laughing so hard to be shut up so quickly that Caleb loner caught the most difficult ball that Isaac Wilson threw the best ball and I just thought like okay that's that's the connection and I don't mean Caleb loner he's not for long at Utah obviously he's he's used up most of his eligibility but that throw I just thought oh that's it and the fact that your guy the announcer said it was Brandon Rose which was another issue that the best play of the game he misnamed the quarterback was not great because one of them wears a single digit number and one of them wears the most recognizable number which is 11 it's really easy to read what he's doing out there and that has been the storyline of Camp did you talk to anybody yeah that was difficult that was a that was a difficult call and I will I'm not done play byplay so I'm going to give him a pass but you saw that there too you just saw when Whit was talking in the throughout camp on the ball coming out of Isaac Wilson's hands the right way that's what he's talking about that is true arm talent that not every everybody had not everybody has and you're a freshman and you can do that type of thing and have the guts to make that throw which I think is a huge part of being a quarter back is trusting your abilities to make those throws even after you've thrown some terrible balls that's that's why he's got potential he's got the upside to get there obviously he has to cut the garbage out but he knows that uh I want to ask Christian his thoughts from the suu perspective because you know you see your team get their brains beat in repeatedly how do you feel about that you know you're like stay stay keep going guys keep going out there my prediction for the final score was 45 to10 so I wasn't too far off I thought my t- birds would get some points on they missed that field goal and that really sucked but uh overall I mean it went about as expected okay I did like the first two drives they moved the ball pretty well the first two drives against the ones I thought this is a team that's going to win some games I absolutely thought that I mean that should be a team that wins six or seven games this year I mean Utah a really good football team there was not a lot of questions about Utah uh and I thought we saw mostly what we expected I thought the youths looked a little bit better and then of course the unfortunate part which is always the injuries with Kanan Johnson going out looks like a season Ender with his knee that was pretty devastating so feel feel horrible for those kids man in the first game that is such a bummer I felt so bad for him transferring winning a job moving across the country yeah horri no and and whoever the sideline gal was and usually I find this type of reporting like too invasive but like she said that you could hear it from yard away from the right and you could hear his screaming him being upset and all the things because it's like God one game yep and he's a six-year player right so this might be it horrendous we'll we'll get more from Whit coming up on uh Monday but any other thoughts what else jumped out to we oh that one's stunk why did we end on that one yeah okay then what's another thought that's why I asked you what another thought was move on to number two number two BYU and Utah State kick off their Seasons tomorrow do you need to see a performance from both schools similar to what we saw from Utah to feel confident what you in what they're offering no I don't know they're playing opponents who don't matter so if they go out and make mistakes we come out of that game going well it's good thing you had that opponent you got to tighten it up and do this and this and that didn't last year's game with uh who was it Sam Houston or yeah who was their first game Sam Houston right it was what 14-point game at one it was not a big it was not a blowout no yeah 14-0 right couldn't move the ball so you come out and you say okay well you know got to tighten up this this and that and then you get other opportunities to do that or you come out mop the floor with them and we'll come out saying well seu was nothing I mean we we'll we'll know nothing about this Utah team until they're tested you know you can like yeah you need to win the game because colani has to has to win he has to have the number and they will it'll be interesting to see how they do it um I suppose but no I don't think you can read into the future of the football team based on whether they struggled or not with a FCS opponent we'll talk to Mitch Harper coming up here in about 10 minutes I'm I just want to leave tomorrow's game feeling confident in BYU's quarterback whoever it is I don't want to leave the game tomorrow night thinking uh him is are they gonna make a switch like I if that's the thought because they have said it's decisive there's a clear-cut winner we know who our number one is he's earned the job he is the guy we won't name him because there's a competitive Advantage apparently but there's a decisive winner in this in this battle I want to walk away from the game tomorrow thinking oh wow yeah absolutely red slap is the guy I get why he won this job or bannan's the guy and I get how he's going to beat SMU and I get how he's going to beat Wyoming and how he's going to beat Baylor and BYU is going to be at least four- one to start the year because if you're four and one and you're going to beat Arizona State in Houston to close the season assuming you that's six and I'm happy with that if I'm a BYU fan that's enough if it is rat SLA um I will have my eye solely on the Run game if you're going to make a decision at the quarterback based on the Run game well the Run game better be good or that better work am I crazy for thinking it should be the opposite if it's red slap I want to see him throw the ball and I know that it was all about like well we can't run the ball so redl has to be out there because he can do some option stuff and he can do some quarterback keeper stuff and he's got he's got these different things he can do to help the Run game man I want to see him move the ball through the air that's how you're going to win at BYU if redl is having to go back and be you know uh uh somebody who's getting 15 carries a game to move the ball for BYU I don't think that's going to be a successful formula for the rest of the season um how much can you improve one season to another well I don't want him to be Riley Nelson and I don't think he was Riley Nelson last year and with all due respect to Riley Nelson but Riley Nelson couldn't throw the ball I don't want to see that from Jake redl I want to see him move the ball through the air who did he resemble last year more Riley Nelson so how much this one I'm saying how much better can you get CU I'm not expecting that if that's what you're expecting from Jake rettl I don't think that's what you're going to get been improved passing game like that much improved or what type of passing I expect a lot of timing stuff yeah a lot of Crossing stuff a lot of high percentage get Hill involved yeah get the tight end involved yeah that's what we're going I mean that's what we're going to see like that's what Utah tried to do for Nate Johnson last year yep like we're going to see a ton of that i' I'd actually be really curious toh to talk to Hance about this but last year Ben he had a 50% completion percentage 648 total yards three touchdowns three interceptions it's almost like our pig farmer argument from last year where you told me he's going to come out and sling it all over the yard I said not a chance he broke 200 one time one time but man he was good when he was running the ball USC so you know what that's what I'm expecting from redl because I think that's their game plan this year and so yeah you hope that you've got a strong receiving core which I think is Chase Roberts darus L why I want to see the ball moved around that's even more why they're going to do this they're just going to get timing routes and stuff to get it into their hands because they're better players Than Jake R Roff as opposed to you know I I picture Zach Wilson but you're on on team Isaac with that pass to the basketball player but as opposed to his name is Caleb loner inos and he's a star opposed to dropping it into some coverage yep and right where your guy has to catch it leading them the right I mean the the we all know the difference right we do think Tyler Huntley sophomore year to Tyler Huntley senior year right totally get it his sophomore year he was throwing timing stuff and and running as soon as option one wasn't there and by by three he was he was throwing the guys was and he was running the offense so I don't know if I'm BYU I'd rather have the latter but I think rettl is the former so then to your point they better be running the ball they better be cooking on the ground they better be cooking on the ground if that is the decision and they're not going to give him an opportunity throw the ball man they better be moving the ball easily on the ground they'll throw it some but it's what I'm talking it's what we're talking about which is the well that's not a vote of confidence in your offensive line or your running backs and I don't know if we're going to see LJ Mar tomorrow they listen they had the worst Run game almost in FBS football you know what though that should be easier to fix than does Riley Nelson turn into you know I'm not coaching the team Ben I don't I'm not coaching the team you know people look for look for something I don't think that's rl's game and again I you know come out sounded mean when I talk this way and he has experience and he was in a lot of games but he's not John Beck he's Travis Wilson what are you looking for from Utah State I have no idea I Utah State listen to Scotty talk about the aies and it's really true they have a bunch of dudes yeah they do they have the best receiver in the in the conference uh in Royal and then Ike Larsson one of the best defensive backs I got to imagine and they lost a shockingly little as far as players leaving throughout this entire catastrophe right bringing in a quarterback that has experience just not experiencing this offense and how's that all going to go oh and there's also this us against the university thing going yeah which is W which is wild yep I can't believe what's going on up in up in Logan coaches preach you know eliminating distractions the coach was the distraction and it's maybe not his fault well yeah well now the distraction is you ran off my coach yeah so it's I have no idea it seems way too volatile it could be like uh it could be like the first part of Major League the movie where it goes really badly or it could be like the second part where they put up the sign you know and they take off the I hope they exercise some demons that's what I'm hoping for I hope they come out exercise some demons and it looks good it's can be awkward up there yeah it's GNA be weird if you were the athletic director would you go out gland glad handing or would you hang out in your office no one's going to see me tomorrow I think so no one's gonna see me tomorrow are you kidding me why don't do that don't do that don't do that it's not helping anybody for anything if good for you if anything there's way too many awkward conversations yeah right disappear yeah it's fine the gner foods gu is going to come up to you me like what's the deal the best thing could happen and and should happen is Utah State come out Stomps Robert Morris drying looks good and Diana Sable says yeah we got the right guy we're happy with it but I see I wouldn't think she actually wants that okay which makes this even more like a major league situation yeah we can dive deeper into it probably don't have time to dip into it what the best yeah 100% I do yes these guys uh lose I can get my guy different someone in here can create a more uh friendly relationship between you know the most important program and the athletic director all right Mitch Harper is G do we have three what do we have go ahead Christian number three local high school game cancelled due to social media threats Great Well Done everybody so Provo players and coaches were receiving threats and we don't know we don't from somebody and their opponent is U and we don't know really anything else about that and then they've just cancelled the the game you know what I'm it's these types of stories Ben I'm going to leave it up to the people that actually have more information than me I trust them I do in this case if you feel it necessary to not play then don't play principal Momi Tua of temp high uh regarding social media posts from the temp community that threatened Prova High School coaches players and family said I'm sadden that we cannot move forward with this traditional rivalry game you could read more about it at KSL a lot how how hard is it to get that information there are people that can do it I personally don't know how to do it you tweeted out PK's number his phone number and his address right certain things like that if you know stuff yeah but then there are people that can look up you know your IP address based on your Wi-Fi that you're using and find your address and all that crazy stuff yeah gotta there Jake uh hey Mitch BYU's playing tomorrow we don't know who the quarterback's gonna be but do we know who the quarterback's gonna be I expect it's gonna be Jake ratl that's where it's been trending you know if if it was my pick if I was Aaron rodic I would have gone probably with Gary bannan out of Camp I thought Gary Bohanan showed uh enough that you know he he was I think he can add more to the Run game Than Jake rettl uh he's better athlete but uh you know Jake rettl has always been viewed the moment that he was signed by uh you know BYU signed him or got got him uh you know rodri has viewed as him as a guy that can be a qb1 and you know you play In that clip about you know the experience and I asked rodri about that because if all things are equal you tend to go with the younger guy because if redl does hit he does give BYU uh more stability at quarterback heading into 2025 and I think rodri's right that you can't think longterm but uh you know that has to play a little bit of a piece when things are are equal because you know up until the very end of Camp they were splitting reps and we saw with our own eyes we were seeing the 50-50 interchanging I mean I was meticulously counting the snaps and seeing the drives and they were splitting them and it was even and uh you know so I think they do believe that they can win with both but I would expect that redl's going to be that first guy tomorrow uh against Southern Illinois I just wonder if they're going to be able to or if they're going to work in Bohanan at all into the game plan what's redl's ceiling as a passer he's improved and the work that he's put in with John bank is noticeable and I've seen enough quarterbacks that have worked with Jon Now where you can see the Ripple effects of you know Beck's teachings on a QB there's some of the mechanics that you know you saw it a lot with Zack Wilson when he was at BYU um it just the the the way that uh rettl is throwing the football there's more velocity there's more accuracy it's a tighter spiral uh than what it was last year and and closing on on Camp he was looking like the better passer than bohannan uh bannan had moments where he had some deep completion to the second team receivers against the second team defense RL had more success against the first team defense on the Deep ball and you know there were some great passes on that final media observation window in Camp which really they were impressive and you could say maybe that was the the ultimate kind of that put him over the top those final few days uh in Camp but uh you know he has improved and and I do believe be's quarterback unit as a whole has improved since last season it's still though how high does it stack up in the Big 12 and by BYU standards it still pels compared to what you expect from BYU quarterbacks but from maybe the low expectations that everyone had in January it has gotten better so when redl was being used to Aid the Run game last year what did that mean to you how do you expect that to look I mean what do you need to see from the Run game and from redl specifically to know that that's a su ESS I don't think they need to have rettl be this Runner honestly I they need to have a quarterback that can sit in the throw the football um you know you know if you need to get out and improvise yes and and that's the strength of red slap where he can improvise and create something out of nothing um but I don't if you're talking design runs to me that's where bannan's got the upper hand I mean he had he had more impressive runs in in design runs in Camp and than both than redl did um in and last season the offensive line got better they got back to what they were their traditional blocking scams so that was wide Zone before it's now different with TJ woods but that Personnel on the offensive line got to a point where they pivoted from what they were doing up until about you know week 111 12 they kind of just got back to the fundamentals and you know Conor pay was leading that charge Wayan L waho and and it was no coincidence you know Aiden Robbins got healthy then the running game was taking off it wasn't necessarily what Jake redl was doing on the Run uh he he you know was a factor he was another number that had to be accounted for but I don't I don't feel like he is imperative to BYU's running game success the offensive Line's got to be uh they got to be lights out and they've got to be good uh tomorrow against Southern Illinois and they got to be pushing the the Salukis back because you know that's been a huge focus and BYU's offensive line doesn't have the uh second unit depth that they've had in years past I think this group goes about seven deep right now that You' feel good about in a game after that it's it's a little dicey so they got to keep guys healthy and they've also got a hit with Caleb etn at left tackle that's going to be critical you know etn switched over from right to left during uh the summer and they believe in him to protect the Blind Side for the QB and also to be dominant the left tack they envisioned him being when they got him out of the portal uh he took every snap with the first team offensive line at left tackle he he is going to be uh even more critical to the Run game than even say you know Jake redl you know cayb bana offensive line he's he's got to be big time for BYU if they're going to have success this year if we are looking at conference rankings at the end of the year you expect BYU to rank what on defense I would say seventh sixth or seventh Bo's defense will be better this year and uh this group's going to be improved I have questions still in the interior on the depth John Nelson and Blake mangl will be good uh but there's there's questions about the depth and the linebackers are a strength cornerbacks made significant strides myy bomb is a future NFL player uh his measurables I mean I've talked about him for about two years he showed up to BYU never really played any football he was a track and field guy but he's got the side and now he's learning the game he he is a he's going to be in that second unit but he's the first guy off the bench and he'll be a special player for BYU he's still got two years of Eligibility Mark Collins comes in from Weber State he's looking fully healthy coming back from the ACL Weber State transfer you know Jay Hills DBS they've been very successful and I expect the same with Mark Collins Jacob Robinson might be the best player on the team and then the safety position you know you're giving Tanner wall who honestly that was a bit of a surprise having him be the first team uh free safety but uh you know he he's someone that showed pretty well the tail into fall camp where he was running with the first team I just thought they'd probably give the edge to the freshman and Tommy parus or FAL St toala but uh I like this defense and there the continuity that BYU had on with this roster you know they were in the bottom three of teams that lost Personnel to the transfer portal they didn't focus on the portal as much this year they're banking on Player Development continuity and the understanding of the system to help them maybe uh you know see an increase I think they can be a middle of the pack Big 12 defense and I'd say you know six or seventh is with within the realm of possibility okay I'll take Caleb etn because you talked about him already I'll take him off the board but what one position group could show one thing tomorrow that would be best case scenario for BYU what one position group yeah what what could be one thing we see tomorrow that you say Okay that was a big question mark that looks like it's been solved and that's going to be a real bonus going forward for BYU throughout the season yeah probably running game and and that's that's I thought it was a Miss by BYU to not go into the portal during this uh this this cycle just because just to have the the bodies the personnel and you know they like LJ Martin and hinley rotti and I I've you know I'm big on LJ Martin's potential I think he can be a really special player and and you know all accounts he's full he's going to be full go and ready ready to play that's the messaging from Kanani sataki we did see him in team portions at the at the tail end of fall Camp practices so expecting to see LJ Martin and then fala rotti is the second guy and you know third string a little bit of maybe poaa hunga and and Miles Davis as well so uh you know that run game's got to be got to be good this year for BYU and and because that's what the the Mandate is in the Big 12 I mean you have excellent ground attacks in this league and and so BYU needs to have that and and and when you have questions at quarterback it it'd be a nice uh luxury to you know maybe mask some of those deficiencies at QB within a with a solid grounded game and you've seen moments from rotti uh is someone that uh you know can pop off a big play he's got an average yard per carry of about you know 5.2 in his BYU career but it's limited action and he's heading into his fifth here at BYU but now it's his time to him and LJ Martin to really Elevate themselves and become uh impact players for BYU so the ground game for sure is that spot that um you know would be a a nice uh you know if they can show kind of the the time he double checked yeah oh man and look we've been doing this you've been doing this for 20 years screw up a lot of names it happens you do get a we we have experience saying Polynesian names so you kind of understand okay well this foul is going to do this and you know this this apostrophe is going to mean this for the second half of the name or whatever you you you get better at it but yeah you're play byplay guy that's that's part of that is part of the gig yeah part of the job I mess them up all the time if I were to do play byplay again Ben which I honestly hope I never do okay you're done with it I will be so obsessed over the names because I screw up so many names any anyway and I do think it's important when you're the play-by-play guy to get the names right I would on LeBron and the Lakers uh continuing their hot streak after making the Conference Finals two years ago but I did predict the Jazz were GNA make the playoffs and I said no and you said no well we'll do it again well I mean we're a month out from the Jazz starting a training camp so lot of a lot of players last night at the game we had some bad predictions but you you took the cake with the Lakers uh Lowry at the game last night that's the champ Keon George at the game last night Isaiah clier Kyle filipowski Williams think they'll repeat the Lakers yeah I think they'll are you are you gonna predict the the SEC second year in a row LeBron Hoist the trophy the title no I didn't like their offseason that the the somal is going to have everything right where it needs to be and the Lakers are going to take down the the mighty West probably not probably not this probably isn't the Lakers year I do think this is LeBron's last year bronny turns into an Allstar G League Allstar man I had forgotten all about that so had I admittedly I totally forgotten about that otherwise I probably would have scrubbed it I bet you on the morning I would have Chad for at that thing on the morning we
