here on a Sunday afternoon the final game between the Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks before the Phillies head back home and Sunday of course means on the show our Sunday sitdown and today's guest is Brandon Marsh she joins us for the first time this year sitting down with us uh first of all good to see you I I I want to start here because we're we're just at the beginning of August trade deadline has just passed it's been two years with you now in a Phillies uniform does it does it feel like two years it feels like a blink of an eye and I I credit that all the fun I think we have out here you know it's it's an incredible group group of guys staff front office everything they they let us be the person that we grew up being and uh when it's time to lock it in and between the lines that's that's what we do so it's it it's it's felt really quick I literally in my notes Here have uh fun as the next question I wanted to talk to you about because that that's that really does kind of explain this team's personality you always you guys seem to enjoy what you're doing you're playing a game it's a wonderful way to make a living right but you guys kind of take it to the next level I think it helps helps in that Clubhouse you know yeah you it takes like the job aspect out of it that's the way I look at it uh you know and that's just all the veteran leaders that we have you know pouring into the daycare members like myself uh but uh no it's just you know they take all the pressure off of our shoulders whenever we have so much fun out there it's it's a hard game to play out there as you know I know we all know and uh any ways to make it easier and more simple is is what we're trying to do so you know our veteran guys our leadership uh they do really good job of that so are you saying that by by taking the pressure off you know this is a game of failure right everyone's going to fail at some point some guys are going to slump some guys are you know even if you hit 300 you're failing an awful lot sure the the way that uh the team is constructed in the way that everyone allows you to be you kind of thing it really helps out on the field for sure yeah I mean like I said it's super hard it's one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life is playing this game of baseball but it's the best thing I've ever done you know so I'm super thankful and blessed but yeah any like I said any any ways to take any pressure any type of anxiety away from the game you know cuz it's just so tough on you mentally physically and all the above it's uh it's uh it's always a good thing when that happens so yeah we do a really good job of that over here you mentioned the daycare you guys again having fun have you always been that kind of guy was were you that kind of guy in high school were you Class Clown kind of thing uh I feel like I'd love to have some fun you know uh you know Class Clown maybe uh I'm I feel like I'm always in the middle of it you know so it's uh that's that's kind of been my role for my being I feel like you know on every team I've been on football basketball baseball you know just trying to be a little spark plug but uh you know cuz those guys are really good out there it's hard to keep up with them you know so you got to find ways to catch up in other ways so it's I know my role to be uh just to be a little energy plug and uh you know be the best Outfitter I can be out there but uh yeah it's uh it's it's a it's it's a whole lot of fun whenever we take the pressure off and have some fun you mentioned the other sports let me take you back to high school Beford High School Georgia you that's where you grew up three sports star um and was baseball always the path for you did you always feel like you know B you had basketball you had football but baseball was was where it was going to be to be honest no uh I always thought deep down that I was a football guy uh basketball I just love to play it I wasn't I wasn't great at it I wasn't bad I wouldn't say I was good I would say it was just right below average okay but uh it's uh yeah I always I grew up thinking I was going to be a football guy uh just coming from where I come from football is a really really big thing baseball as well too so it's uh you know it all it all came together at the right time but uh I always thought I was going to play football go to college play the University of Georgia you know that was my dream and uh you know it just the draft for baseball came around and it was one of those things where you know I got to look out for my body my future my career and my family so it's uh this was definitely the right path and yeah here we are today I should probably know the answer to this but were you a wide receiver is that I was yes yeah wide W wide receiver I really enjoyed I was better at wide receiver but I really enjoyed playing defense just because you could hit and you even when you were wrong you could still be right as long as as long as you hit someone pretty good so I love playing defense I love being on the perimeter playing Corner uh you know occasionally sometimes off the edge when my hair was on fire but uh yeah I love football man and before we get away from high school Joey Bart was your high school teammate you guys want to state championship you almost won a second right uh that had to be a blast I assume you still keep in touch with Joey for sure yeah and it's always we just came from Pittsburg right after the break so you know uh stepping into the box and having him behind the dish you know it's just kind of that Nostalgia feeling uh you know just bringing back so many memories with him you know the wall Joey Bart is what we called him cuz that dude let nothing get by him it was it was incredible and he he R so it was uh yeah he carried our team to that state championship so he was uh a big big piece and uh yeah you know he he went into what Georgia Tech and then was a second pick out of the draft so I looked at your numbers in high school you also raked you the the two of you together power numbers though he had the power numbers I could slap a single whenever I wanted to but that dude he would put him out the park and double triple all that so uh yeah my job like it is today is just to get on first for the Big Boppers to knock me in so fair enough all right so uh you get drafted by the Angels you end up signing uh a couple years in the minor leagues you dealt with a lot of injuries in in the minor leagues um what do you what do you remember about that time you know in terms of of baseball and the minor leagues going through like the rough uh uh I really it made me appreciate you know being out there a lot more just because it's you always want to you want to contribute to the to the to the game for the team for for your for your organization so and it's hard to when you're when you're on the when you're on the pine you know uh not being able to participate and uh compete so uh yeah it just it really makes you appreciate the the times that you spend out there and even the the tough times you know it uh there's there's beauty in all of it there's a beauty in the struggle Beauty in the pain and uh you know you got to try to find the light in everything well you get called up in 2021 make your major league debut uh with an angels team that had sh Otani had Mike Trout a lot of star power you're in there as a young player uh what was that like first and foremost and tell me a little bit about what you learned from from guys like that yeah you know I'd be lying if I said I wasn't Star Struck you know just at first and uh I mean you get you get to experience time spent with him uh during spring training and stuff like that but uh you know when you when you get to a third deck Big League ball Ballpark and have these lights shining down on you 40,000 people yelling it's a it's a whole lot different and a whole different atmosphere whole different feel so uh yeah you know I've been truly blessed to be put on the path that I've been put on play with the angels and those those guys over there you know the renon trouts waly phol show he and then coming here and playing with all these guys here it's I mean it's it literally feels like I'm Liv in a dream every single day and it's I couldn't I couldn't imagine being in a better position for myself just being able to learn from these guys and the dudes I played with in the past so it's you know it's hard to it's hard to answer the question with all the information I feel like that I've gained and like from those guys but I mean I can't tip my cap to them enough they've looked out for me put their arm over my shoulder and just taking me in as like a little brother and they try to get the best out of me like I try to push them to get the best out of them you know so it's just it's all one big love one big family talk to me a little bit about this The Outfield that uh you currently are are part of that you guys defensively could just go get it you know I think about yourself and and Johan and and what Nick does out there in right field that you know what kind of player he's made himself defensively and it's got to be again back to that word got to be a lot of fun to be a part of that unit as well right yeah especially you know Cassie that dude's been Nails out there for ever since I've stepped foot foot on a baseball field with a Phillies uniform he's I think he's made one error since I've been since I've been a Philly and that's really really hard to do playing every single day like like Nick does so and Rass in Center I mean no words needed really that dude is as good as it gets out there is as Fearless as it gets and you know that dude competes out there he he takes so much pride in his defense as do I and so that's I love him for it cuz I feel like diving a diving play or robbing a homer is just as cool if not cooler than hitting one so it's uh yeah it's it's been to answer your question a whole lot of fun man and it's just it's been it's been a huge blessing I get to learn from I mean roas is three years younger than I am but I still get to learn from him every day you know just the way his athletic body just works and moves and I can watch him just you know flow and work out there it's it's it's it's awesome you know I try to take some of what he does and you know put it into my my game but it's it's it's it's a whole lot of fun not a lot of balls are dropping out there and uh that's that's that's just a good Outfield yeah the pitchers love it no doubt oh what's more fun robbing a home run at diving catch or robbing a home run or throwing a guy out at second or third when when they're trying to to steal an extra base I would probably say throwing someone out just because you know they're running on you you know they're they're not thinking that you can get them so when you when you when you put it in there and you know you stick it and you get the out it's it's definitely a a really good feel I I just for a lack of better terms it's a really really good feeling I would imagine it all right let me ask you about uh your sister because uh earlier this year she was over there at the Olympic trials a he athlete your sister Aon know how it it it's amazing it's seven different events can you name can you name the seven events yeah so she does it's the high jump long jump shot put Javelin uh 200 M 800 M and the 100 met hurdle it's yeah it I don't know how she does it or why she does it but she's a stud man she's a stud I I think I know why she does it she's outstanding at it but but but it is amazing um you know when you when you think about Athletics and and genetics and and all of that I mean the two of you are such high you know Elite athletes I guess is the best way to say it um were you guys competitive against one another when you were younger oh yeah yeah I I I tell the story all the time I I remember her coming uh over to uh post football practice with me and all my buddies back in like you know the little league days like 10 to 14 years old and she'd come over and race all of us and she'd beat more than 75% of us you know and she's 2 years younger than all of us and she's coming in and just dusing us and so yeah there's definitely a lot of competition between her and I growing up we're a little different uh Talent uh attributes I feel like you should say characteristics she's she's good like waist down I'm good waist up and so it's and she's still good way up but I just feel like you know I'm more of a hands guy and she can just just flat out run and go get it so there's definitely like there's you know strengths to both of our games you should say but uh yeah if if it's running she's got it she's beating you it's close she's beaten me before yeah she's I I I take I take the majority of the wins but she has beaten me and I I'll admit it I'll admit it uh earlier this year I had your mom on the show uh and had a chance to to talk with her and and it was so great to hear you know talk about you and and and talk about your sister as well and and the what you guys have accomplished pretty close-knit group the three of you guys for sure yeah you know family means the world to us you know and our household and growing up that's just what we preach you know family over everything and stuff like that so yeah we're we're super super tight uh my mom's actually out here uh for this series so which is awesome got to see her last night after the game which was great and uh but yeah you know she's uh it all it all comes it all stems from from the parents you know the way we were raised like you said the genetics we got but uh you know they really they instilled a really hard uh work ethic into our you know our bodies and our our everyday uh just lives so uh we were gifted yes uh from our parents from God but uh I I truly think just the hard work that they they instilled in us from growing up that nothing's going to be handed out to you you got to go get it and uh I feel like that's what's gotten to got in my sister and I to where we are today you know I got to I got to thank the parents for sure no doubt about it and uh you know it it takes a lot of hard work you might have the gifts you might have the the talent but it still takes all the hard work and both of you uh certainly have proved that all right before I let you go I don't want to keep you too long but before I let you go let's have a little bit of fun we used to call this minute with murf over there on the on the television side of things so let me ask you a couple of questions first and foremost you're from Buford Georgia a little known fact the woman that invented Tupperware is also from Buford Georgia so cool right so so I ask you what food is best the second time around Tupperware leftovers that's what I think of Second Time Around the next day okay so my favorite growing up I feel would have to be around Thanksgiving probably Thanksgiving you know just getting the the turkey the stuff and the gravy mashed potatoes the mac and cheese the greens all that stuff I know me too me too but uh I I would say I I can remember every Thanksgiving waking up the next day after we had the big feast and crushing it all again so I would definitely say any Thanksgiving any Thanksgiving type of food yeah where would we be without Tupperware the day after Thanksgiving right where would we be without Tupperware from beautiful Georgia never exactly right all right next up um I'm sure you get tired of talking about uh your beard and your hair you know people ask you all the time very distinctive look for sure but I want to know which of your teammates takes the longest to get ready which one's staring at the mirror before you guys are going out huh I I I would say I would I definitely have to put myself first but if I if I can't say myself uh looking around st's got the hair but he's he he's kind of quick you know bom's got the hair he's quick uh who take the longest I mean my guess would be strong but but I I feel like it's it's a hard fallof from me to the next guy you know so I think just strong just because the hair you know he's got to wash you know make make sure the curls are right you know put his oils in but he's uh I don't want him to get mad at me but I think I'd have to say strong just because of the hair you know all right well but me for he's not going to get mad I'll take I I'll take the he me first hard hard fall off then strong all right I love it all right and uh finally um your sister we talked about her Olympic trials uh hoping to get back I'm sure four years from now pick a teammate pick a sport which one of your your teammates could win a gold medal in either the winter or summer olympics I'd have to go with big papa Estes to be a wrestler oh and there's nobody touching him I'm sorry there's no one that's going to be able to wrap their arms around him and take him down and he's going to just suffocate you so I got to go with I got to go with the big papa bear uh esz 100% I would not want of wrestle Mr EST no no way that's why I'm so happy he's on our team so if you know we never want this but if any if there were any altercation between any opposing team and us I feel like we're good because we got him you know no doubt about it big dude man big dude gold medalist for sure uh Brandon hey always good to talk to you I appreciate your time uh thanks for doing this yes sir likewise appreciate it all right well let's take a quick break but we've got more to come so stay with us on the Phillies Radio Network
