News 10 starts with developing news first at 7 the conversation has been ongoing for a week now uncensored America a student organization at the University of South Carolina will have Gavin McInnis and Milo yannopoulos as speakers at a comedy roast of Vice President KLA Harris in September today investigative reporter Derrik Rush spoke exclusively with mcginness ahead of the controversial event that sparked protests from state legislators and the community while the proud boys have been linked to several violent demonstrations including the January 6 Capital Insurrection their founder says he won't be the one bringing the confrontation to USC's campus come September alumni and some legislators feel USC's reaction was poor I think the proud boys speak for the leadership of USC allowing these types of speakers onto campus and allowing them to to use the university facilities this statement just it just wasn't good for for minority students or any other marginalized community on campus the governor's stance a bit different so the the university does not have a the right to to cancel speech and from speaking with proud boy founder Gavin McKinnis himself calling me ack in an email I'm just speaking facts these are I guess you'd call them hate facts you would have to be Medical official to call me and that for that to be a Justified cause you you are not to my knowledge I think you should be mad at at nature I don't understand why I'm the bad guy cuz you're you don't need to be a medical professional to spot the controversy continues to build a derogatory flyer from USC student organization uncensored America inviting students to a comedy roast of Vice President kamla Harris with a petition created by Alum Courtney mlan now reaching over 10,000 signatures there's even people in California wondering about what is happening in South Carolina the university has stood firm on the decision to allow the event under first amendment protection uh what they say again it's First Amendment rights and it's not the endorsement of the University it's the students we invited them and experts explained that legally the university stepping in could open the floodgates of lawsuits against the school the organizers would like nothing better to have the event cancelled because then they will be able to claim truthfully that their speech has been censored if it intervenes USC would be liable under federal civil rights laws that protect hate speech under the First Amendment mckennis insists he will not be the one bringing the hate to the event I I don't know if you're looking for violence you're looking on the wrong side of the political Spectrum the left are the violent ones they burnt down this country for two years straight we had one Riot on January 6 a woman was shot by you I didn't not I was not there sir so I didn't shoot her by a liberal cop by the state the university could have issued a much stronger statement in the first instance explaining that the leadership of the University finds the loop reprehensible and the speakers repugnant but unpopular speech is protected by the first and 14th amendments regardless of the popularity mckennis is pressing forward what are you hoping that comes out of the event it it won't exactly be like the Classic Roast you see in Comedy Central we're just going to make fun of what could be the worst president in American history in Columbia Derrik Rush wi news 10 now the event is scheduled for September 18 at 700 p.m. in the Russell house Ballroom
