today's second round game it was a 7762 win for the knights and now it's 17- 14 a chance at a third game against the Cougars of BYU a team that's been ranked inside the top 25 just about all year a team that's beaten UCF twice winning a close matchup in Orlando earlier this year and then another close game in Provo the knights battled BYU at home earlier this season losing by just those five points in that basketball game game 6358 a defensive battle there and in Provo a ball game itself the home team shoot 46 free throws and UCF rally down 23 to actually have the ball with a second to go with a chance to win with a three a crazy matchup in the second meeting they say it's tough to be the team three times in a season that may be the challenge for BYU today and while the knights just need one win today they would take that and advance to the quarterfinals of this tournament and allow BYU to take the two regular season wins back home with them welcome to the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City and Mark Danel with a pregame show the knights won that ball game yesterday in a quick turnaround back to the hotel where the KN band and cheerleaders greeted them and a little bit of a game I thought that favored UCF yesterday if it's a game that's got a lot of quick whistles that could bod well for BYU they rely on the three they would love to get ucf's bigs in foul trouble to take the game start first UCF offense yesterday their bigs were big Ibrahim adalo went off for the double double 17 points and 11 rebounds three steals couple of blocks the knights would love for him to be a factor today because BYU doesn't necessarily like a physical game down low it's not just him I thought it was the play of CJ Walker had a big game yesterday CJ went for 12 points very athletic and even J NOA who we thought had a serious injury at TCU he was able to play yesterday he was very athletic for UCF up and down the floor and S had nine points of the game yesterday the knights would love their bigs to get points again today again BYU they may be tall but they're not the most physical basketball team you'd like to have to have them work down low BYU on the other hand they want to get UCS bigs and fou trouble they want to take away that Advantage for the night so that's why I mentioned it'll be interesting to watch how this game is called early on yesterday's officiating crew by the veteran duck Surman who's done a number final fource they let him play and it helped UCF yesterday the nights in the basketball game had a total of eight fouls the entire game yesterday I don't know if that'll be the case today with the officials that are assigned to this matum but it also gets back to who else can make some shots and Darius Johnson hit some threes yesterday he was big the knights did not rely on the three-point shot yesterday that's a good thing if they start taking too many threes his team doesn't shoot that well from the outside so that's why they love the inside offensive game now the other side BYU again they love to take the three points shot this season they have taken 998 threes to give you an idea of the difference well BYU has played 31 games UCF has played 31 games 998 threes attempted by BYU 651 for UCF that's a lot of difference in threes so when they're hot shooting outside they can beat anybody in college basketball they've got some weapons Jackson Robinson comes off the bench he's got 73s Trevon Nell has 65 threes in the year Noah Waterman one of their bigs he's got 55 they've got Shooters and they pass the ball extremely well this is really solid effort by your team yesterday what stood out as you look back and watched the film about what your team did well yesterday well we defended really well yesterday uh from start to finish I thought our guys were really focused really locked in and now that second half uh run that we made it was fueled by our defense we just kept getting stop after stop we turned into good offense you had to be happy you shot the three ball well but it's a classic case so you didn't rely on the three and therefore it ended up being really well for you definitely something we know we've worked on throughout the season is understanding who we are what's our identity our identity as we said before is ground and pound we want to get the ball into the paint through posting it through driving it and then if I you know th eminate from that then we take them because we got guys we know are capable of making them what's the biggest challenge on the one day turnaround well preparation uh one day turn just your prep uh you know we played this team twice now so we do have an understanding of what they do but just your days that you would get in there and and work on certain things to make sure that you are you know really locked in on execution but but one game you know main thing is is energy effort just pour it all out you mentioned about BW you team relies on the three what's the basic defensive mindset on how you deny that as best you can well it starts in transition first you have to get back and you have to find Shooters when you're running back in transition you have to find Shooters and you can't worry about matchups you have to just find someone and in match up and not worry about this is not my man because I think that fuels them when they can get open looks so get back don't give me threes and transition easy and then once you're in a half court just identifying their Shooters and making sure you stay stay near them you know we're going to play our D our system is our system but we have to tweak it a little bit where we where we a little bit more out on those Shooters to make sure we don't give them any easy catch and shoot opportunities yeserday guy like Ibrahim a really dominated down low today Ali Khalifa plays up top he's one of the better bigs passing in the country averaging more than four assisted game what's the challenge defending him and then how does that defensive assignment affect your bigs on offense to a degree well we need to try to make sure we pressure him we try to make sure we make him uncomfortable uh when he's comfortable I he's a terrific assist big probably probably the best assist big in the country we need to make sure that we you know put pressure on him have him thinking about us as opposed to thinking about the different passes he can make to be successful and make connecting you know plays for his team you got some great bench play yesterday tyan no Sila came out and play well Antoine Jones gave you an offensive spur Che you h a couple of Threes you'll need that today to to battle some minutes how big was that a plus yesterday that was very important for us you know we always have strengthens on numbers and I think it showed again yesterday you know we were able to rely on our depth all those guys came in and gave us good contributions and we don't need that you know tonight again we need all our guys ready to play because you know you're going to need guys to step up do you need the more physical game like the first match up against him and kind of what became a three-point catch up for us would you prefer more that first time match up against BYU well definitely anytime we can play physical this league has been physical throughout the season so anytime we can play that type of game is great you know we at 40 you know we allow them to take 46 free throws at their place that's that's unheard of they made 40 40 free throws so we have got to defend without fouling but you know we
