USF Bulls defeat Bethune Cookman 48-3, Post Game Edition of The Sports Web

the USF Bulls defeat bethon cookman and their first home game of the season 48 to3 how do we start off this show probably keep it down just a little bit because people are kind of working bring your passion bring your excitement just don't bring any nonsense once again I'm your host Peter Blake along with best of the bay Mr Tampa Bay Ray Kennedy and it didn't necessarily start out so well for USF and then they really got things going there with an 11pl 82 yard uh drive there Byron brown with the honors 42 yard run I mean and that has kind of been the excitement Tampa Bay Ray Kennedy about this offense about this team Byron Brown that's the guy you gotta definitely focus on Welcome to the evolution yeah yo what fantastic game tonight that Byron Brown Rush that really was what seemed to open it up before then it almost felt like because we just got through with what seemed like like about 72 months of NFL preseason in college it was almost like the Bulls came out look like oh they're feeling themselves around a little bit then sha Atkins got active that defense got lit and of course Byron had that big rush and we got to play this right here here we go and like Bulls fans are like uh you know is there a postgame show it's late this is what we do here on the evolution open put phone lines if you want to talk about this big time Bulls win tonight 72725 53918 72725 5391 you know what I just thought of what everybody else is down in the media room so we could probably be as loud as we need to be at this point because nobody's really working but if they do come over here and say and they've been doing this all night long to us they were like what is this is this a podcast it's the evolution of Sports Talk television it's a cross between a TV and radio show with all the elements with uh phone calls of course text messages and again great coverage we're going to be cover bring the USA Bulls all year around especially at home we'll figure out the away situation and then of course the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and we're on amped up Sports uh right now we're looking for Leo Hagerty as he is uh doing some postgame stuff there interviewing Alex golish and some players but you know going back to it Byron Brown being the story he was the story tonight did miss some throws but overall this is exactly what we expected from the young man coming into the season 100% that was down there on on the field right there when Byron came out Byron came out and was warming up and doing the exercise ball before he puts his pads on that's his routine pregame routine and I'll tell you what you saw it too in the pictures video we sent up that he's he he looks every bit that 15 to 20 pounds of muscle he put on his offseason yes by looks the rest of the team took a minute he was definitely ready to go tonight and uh this team just last year being coach gish's first year it was they were establishing themselves and Coach even said they were trying to find this year they've you know it's still only the first game of the season they're coming out they seem to be a team that's already know their where their identity needs to go to they just need to work a little bit to take some of the rough edges away maybe yeah and look I get it bethon cookman is bethon cookman at the end of the day the real challenge is most likely next week but this is the kind of game you needed and a lot of people thought you know what there's no way they're going to be able to come out uh strong they may struggle they did not struggle they had their moments tonight again it started out uh fourth and one there Leo's looking at me why not go for it at that point you don't go for it you punt the ball you give your defense the opportunity I thought the defense all night long really didn't give up a lot of plays at all shut down the running game got after the quarterback that's exactly what you want to see because of course uh the stakes get a little bit higher next week versus the Alabama Crimson tied on the road but with that being said going with Byron Brown for the night 13 for 2152 didn't throw any touchdowns but you know talk about this running game overall 46 carries 231 that's the kind of balance you want to see from this offense because so many times uh throughout last year they would be one-dimensional the offense at this point you know in order for this team to really go anywhere in my opinion you have to be balanced and they were definitely that tonight Kelly Jordan leading the way there 14 carries for 78 yards two touchdowns a career high for that young man Brown eight carries for 74 yards along with again we talked about the 42 y you watch the run it's an option he hits the hole and full stride there looks like he's going to get tackled and brown does not go down he's fast I tell he found that sideline and he was Off to the Races they didn't have a chance once he got that to that third level or pass the second but you know going back to that fourth down play um fourth and one first drive of the game you're like well every bit why not go for it at home I think the difference between 2023 bulls and 2024 Bulls is that Coach G was still setting that we're going to this is how we're going to be as opposed to now in 2024 the identity being kind of already said a little bit let's go ahead and punt the ball there let's do the smart thing you want to do most days of the week and then come back out and they still found their bearings there a little bit later in the first quarter now it wasn't all good all night long because there was somewhat of an injury which uh we really don't know what the status of it is but the big play there Jaylen Schuler who is the leading tackler for this bull Squad last year has an interception goes 29 yards but on the return gets hit on his knee I mean this and he's down for a little bit uh uh it looks like they're going to bring out the cart he's helped off the field right now we don't know what the status of that is but that would be a major loss for this defense especially with the interception with how active uh he was earlier on in the game and just making a play there just making a play that you don't necessarily expect a linebacker to make makes a great catch takes it back for the return but once again gets hit on the knee there so some concern will definitely update that situation uh when that information becomes available but right now uh thoughts and prayers to Mr jayen Schuler there yeah and sure Leo who's getting down there with the coach's conference and press and get a good interview I'm sure he'll have a little more maybe an update there for us here in just a few minutes absolutely I tell you what let's go out to the comments here on the sports web again open phone test for Alabama tonight 63 to nothing over Western Kentucky so I mean it lines it up for I mean as a bulls fans going into next week going into tuscalo all we can hope for is maybe they've got a little bit a big head of themselves because they're you know this Bulls team showed last last year against Alabama they're not just going to fold up and go home they're going to give him a game and you mentioned in last year they definitely played and and I know Brown missed some throws he had some throws that he missed tonight but overall you can see again the excitement uh he was trying to throw from the pocket but when they let him lose out of that pocket and bethon cookman lost containment he really made some things happen and that's where he becomes his most dangerous self in my opinion uh you're exactly right though and Coach golish will have this team ready to go they're all about process they're all about you know going through the correct processes if you will uh he will we could definitely talk about that and then I guess Notre Dame is having struggles right now Michigan's having their own struggles uh yeah handling college football is back my friend that's the one big time story on the sports web and we'll definitely got you covered here uh anytime after Bulls games try to get some before Bulls games coverage and of course throughout the week on Monday and first year here with the seven wins so that was definitely encouraging and you hope that happens uh for this team of course their next home game versus cam Ward and the Miami Hurricanes cam Ward can you get enough of us I mean we're on Monday we're on Wednesday night we won't be on Monday night it's Labor Day so we'll give you a break there but plenty to talk about I know you're a Tampa Bay Sports Fan so what did you think of the Bulls tonight uh I honestly did not know that they were playing so you can yell at me about that one right I I I was uh watching the pay-per-view so you can yell at me for okay being my wrestling fanatic self there okay however yes um I'm calling because I want to know like is there anybody in particular that we should be looking at you know for the Bulls come you know draft season like is there somebody we should look at I mean I'm an Ohio State guy but I don't really watch college football too much until he comes draft time right well I'm Marquette I'm Marquette until Marquette gets a college football team I guess I'll R to Ohio State listen I would say right now if you're a bulls fan everybody all the attention is definitely on Byron Brown because of you you know how multifaceted he can be not only throwing the ball from the pocket and getting better with that and that's what he definitely has to get better in order to transition over to that NFL level but he's got all the skills all the athleticism he's gotten bigger he's put on about 20 to 25 pounds and he can run the ball also so that's the guy you definitely need to pay attention to is he a what would you say like kind of a like a pocket guy or more of a scrambling guy he's a he's he's he's more of a Mobility guy but he definitely needs to you know consistently be able to throw from the pocket more but he's definitely a mobile quarterback he's a multi-dimensional quarterback that can make things happen and he has a great on he just he just he kind of missed some throws tonight he missed some throws in that Alabama game last year he missed some throws throughout the year that's what happens with young quarterbacks but then what you're looking for is the real quarterbacks that are going to get drafted to the next level have to be able to throw the ball from the pocket consistently now my next question as somebody that doesn't know the Bulls yes what would you say is the freshman class though looking like what's the depth I got one for you I got one for you Frankie how's this tonight we got to see Ni grammatica who of course is son of and you love the kickers you love the kickers you love the bo I beg for the leg yes you beg for the leg Martin grammatic son of course he's a freshman here at USF and he did some kickoffs you're bum you're a bum Rock I believe he actually may have like an extra point or two but he looked fantastic of course Canon their current kickers doing a fantastic job but there's a well there was a story there was a story there he had a 53 Y which is his career high uh it usually was 47 and that that really put the game Out Of Reach at that point a 53 y I believe was right before was it right before halftime there H was all it was in the second quarter but second quarter but 53 yarder and then also had a 45 Yer uh in this game so just for a Time for you there Frankie right right exactly so what else I plug you guys all the time I share I share Peter I share your story I appreciate that man I really do you do work passed you though I passed you you passed me how I have like 2,000 I have 2.1k followers now well good good for you man absolutely I'm not even crying though man seriously when I do my reals man I'm it because because I love doing it man it honestly it helps me with my anxiety it helps me with my depression and honestly I'm doing it to put a smile on somebody's face for the day yeah and if I don't laugh when I'm making it then I'm not gonna put it out there I'm doing it just to make someone else have a smile during the day and if I get at least one like on a video yeah then I'm like dude I made somebody's day better yes I made at least one person that's all I'm doing it for and I'm gaining all these followers from it and I'm like damn well yeah I tell you right right now you got to watch more college football you got to watch USF this year because we're gonna got Florida State playing on Monday night NFL next weekend I know I know we all are we all are we're counting down the days here what is it is it eight days or what is it no no no it's eight days yeah well eight days for the for the bucks eight days eight days for the bucks and then you have the game on Thursday and then you have Friday night Brazil and Friday yeah Thursday Friday isn't it her game of the season going back to it Schuler was all over the place but you know hopefully that injury is not serious or severe it didn't necessarily look good uh after that uh seven plays 40 yards once again the defense giving them the opportunity there actually excuse me getting ahead of myself eight plays for 48 yards there um how disagree with everything yes a one yard touchdown but the the highlight of the game and we saw him last year also show up uh from Byron Brown would be Shawn Atkins 18 yards so at that point it's 21 to nothing and again you start to feel good about this because you did have a little bit of a rough start but then Midway through the second quarter it's 21 to nothing and you got all the momentum and then once again the defense gets back the ball they go uh seven plays 40 yards nayquan right the highlight of that and I believe we have some of that footage there really quick let me see if I can find that but uh you know 10 yard catch there does not go down uh and he showed this last year versus Alabama where he's just a natural truck stick does the same thing nearly scores on that and then goes in for the one yard plunge and once again it's 28 to nothing USF and Bulls fans are just going crazy it was great down there the excitement the electricity again that was where the student section next to the band section and so many families and a lot of people out here so many such a great time on a Saturday night and thank you to Mother Nature for pulling back humidity for like a 24h hour period and it was it's still you know 90 degrees or but it was a little drier and you could feel it with the breeze out of the East tonight it was a fantastic night here in Ram and James it was and I want to go out to this crowd shop because you were on the field you were getting some of this no game second and 10 at the [Music] one I mean that's kind of what it was all night long I mean lots of again you know 6,000 students out there unbelievable turnout and I definitely think that you know more people will come out and see this team because the excitement is going to be there Big Time game next week ver is the Alabama Crimson Tide and then on top of it you have the Miami Hurricanes coming to town which again very impressive versus the Florida Gators a lot of people wondering if Billy Napier uh Sun Belt Billy will be able to keep his job because it is a gauntlet of a schedule for the Florida Gator so we'll see how that works out yes thank you Gauntlet Gauntlet yes Gauntlet yeah Gauntlet I don't think that was a Leo word but okay I'll fight they said not today not in our house now we go to their place the onus is on them especially after a 63 to nothing win against Western Kentucky so they they haven't seen themel either but they haven't seen this Bulls team and the confidence is out there the Bulls team they're going to go in there and give him a good game so we're looking forward to that game a week from tonight yeah absolutely and I think a lot of people are looking forward to it because at the end of the day even though Nick sabit is no longer there as a coach that is the measuring stick as a National Power with the tra tradition and hopefully you know that Bull's effort from last year they can finish up the game we'll see what happens again 49 yard field goal there and then a 53 y by Cannon there which was tremendous as you said you go to the second half and much of the same I mean this was a again blowout 40 yard by Cannon making it 34-3 at that point uh you get a 26 yard run and then uh you get a 41 yard pass play uh from brown to uh Ramen believe it's is it ran ran I pronounced his name wrong I probably let me just see here really quick uh Raymond my Raymond yes right here right I got I got it right here Abdul Ramen Yen y oh you SE right yes you seen so there you go so 41 y to set up um another touchdown there and Bryce Archie comes in it's 48 to3 so it's pretty it's pretty much closed out at the end of the day for this team and and that was that was the impressive thing it was a again that a little bit of a slow start there by second quarter the game is basically out of a lot of questions about this defense I think a lot of those questions were answered tonight by the defense shutting down uh that first team offense forman's best plays were were in the first half especially were penalties and they were some not ticky tacky they were you know warranted maybe egregious call Bec because to me I think the ref missed it uh the Schuler the Scher play before the injury they call him for a late hit and then they look at it as he didn't even touch doesn't even touch the player with his helmet at all slid the last second he actually fell and all he did was go down and barely was just trying to keep himself from falling it seemed like uh they didn't throw him out of the game they didn't get him for targeting but they got him for the 15 yard personal foul and so you know you can't review that but uh yeah the best thing for beun especially that first half was those penalties and then yeah you know that Bulls defense really just stepped up yeah it did and again going back to the Run game here Byron Brown eight carries for 74 yards yards uh Taran Keith big game also seven carries for 39 yards uh yasis young seven carries for 30 yards and nwan wri we talked about his effort just being the human truck stick when it comes to you know putting your shoulder pad down and just trying to run somebody over impressive Again by this Bulls team 46 carries 231 yards five touchdowns that's just on the and again you know mostly one yard because but you're doing that to a team and you're you're dominant in that running game you're going to keep the ball a lot and then on top of it you're going to wear that uh Bon cookman defense out and that's exactly what they did with dominating uh time of possession I want to look at some of these team numbers here because I think it's definitely uh clear third down efficiency for the night eight for 15 you'll take that all day long for your offense again defensively uh holding Bon cookman to three for 16 uh they go for fourth down early on in the game don't necessarily get I believe that's on Fourth and goal they get stuck there actually had to replay that I don't know what they were replaying again the refs well the refs didn't know what they were looking at but they clearly missed that call the ball goes back to bethon cookman but they're not able to do anything uh with it as the Wildcats uh struggled all night long offensively uh passing wise 122 yards 170 total yards so if you were looking for you know the Bulls to step up defensively this is the game that you're like okay that's good now what can they do in the following weeks here against definitely better competition if you will well they and the defense was all over the place the secondary they were hitting their marks they were where they needed to be at the right time that's how you get the big interception that's why they didn't really have any you know any luck in the passing game but and the offense too is like I don't know exactly why Byron Brown was still there in the in the late in the third quarter and spending six seconds in the pocket trying to throw the ball I'm like you know I want I want dog to get ready to you know just find his rhythm but at the same time trying to get some reps I I trust coach goish and and the processes that he's going through sound like I was questioning coach a little bit come after yeah riveters I stopped by there're on the way over oh really you stopped by Rivers was that packed there big UF big Gator watch party and I did kind of point out that I now I know why the I know why Rob Thompson and the Gang and the crew all over there having their like Buccaneer game day or watch both away and home game parties yes uh big nasty Keith kig actually has a party over there I want don't want to you know Jay was telling me some stuff but I'm like you always also realize you're about three blocks down from Bulls country so you know you could do that but uh yeah I don't if you're a gay fan probably not a lot to talk about it looked like it was a nice day there in the swamp but not so much maybe early there he had a big play or two but after that it was just it was not good there was no defense at the end of the day offense couldn't do much of anything and I was there TBO look good well Tim Tim look good he didn't do the you know well they needed Tim TBO today they they need anything at this point with the way the offense think TR has a year of Eligibility left I think that the Napier should be calling you already trying to recruit put that guy back into college as he's rushing numbers five touch Downs on the ground brown with the explosive plays especially you know leading the run there I mean what did you see that you think uh would concern you with this team going forward some penalties we talked about that pass interference kind of ticky Tac but you're still calling that there was one called um in the midc quarter where they took it off because the ball was uncatchable but is that what did you see tonight uh that you could probably nitpick that that would kind of concern you if you will if you're a bulls fan going forward you know I I would say I would say say that if there I love the five touchdowns on the ground I love put put put put give a tape make Alabama look at tape this week seven penalties for 85 yards that's something I know that coach goers definitely wants to clean up you got to clean that up you just have to well you can't be doing that because now you're going against a team that's got you know slightly bigger players slightly faster they're going to be so you're G to have to play a penalty free game if you will if you're going to have a personal foul make sure it's at the right time because you're setting you know you're let you're setting a tempo the game but as far as tonight's game um I hope that the five touchdowns on the on the ground and the rushing I think that's letting them to look at that I would hope that maybe we held back on some of that passing not that we have to but you know also knowing that next week going into Tuscaloosa against the Alabama Crimson Tide didn't want to show too much tonight if they were really trying to show too much and they struggled like that with the passing game then maybe I would be like okay like to see that tighten up a little more Cole Skinner right tackle 56 going down limping out of the game that kind of hurts he's a start he was a starter as a freshman last year and he looked this year Tristan's favorite player so hopefully that cat's okay like to hear a report on that but not so much to be concerned with it was really I saw this team in Pre pregame warmup and they just seem like a team that okay this is year two we kind of know we've we've been here now we know what to expect we still got a lot a long way to go we still got a lot to learn coach is going to show us but they look like they've really gotten comfortable and kind of settled into where they want to be this USF program moving forward and that's kind of what you're looking at if you're USF Bulls fan hopefully you're watching this program right now even at this laate out power the most exciting thing is you're going into your second year of Alex gish's tender so you we'll see I don't necessarily think you're going to see you know that learning process I I think it's calmed down you you feel an excitement I talked about it when going out there and covering the Bucks there's an excitement covering this team there's an excitement to it a golish uh definitely uh certainly seems like not that he didn't have confidence last year but he has confidence this year because you're not trying to move around you're not trying to do this you're not trying to do that you're not trying to establish your identity your identity is there it showed tonight it showed that you want to be physical at the point of attack it showed that not only do you want your quarterback to throw from the pocket but you also want to use his Mobility when the opportunity definitely exist and once again you know ball control possession wise over almost 40 minutes of possession compared to bethon cookman at 22 minutes uh and then going back to the defense because we continue to talk about that two turnovers tonight uh two interceptions uh they got after uh the quarterback they actually had to change the quarterback there later on in the second quarter because they couldn't get anything uh going when it came to uh the Wildcats all night long and again they stifled uh that offense that opposing offense so that's exactly what you want to see you want your defense to lead the way you want your defense to shut down the running game get after the quarterback and CA turnovers and that's exactly what they did Tampa Bay Kennedy 100% and uh also as far as this defense goes um last year it was like you know coach goish comes in he's an offensive guy he's he's got it Byron Brown uh this year and we saw the defense last year stepping up as how they they made them they made it to the mini bowl or Minik bowl no they were in the boa rone Bowl I'm sorry Syracuse where they shut him down 45 to nothing I remember that I know I I can't believe you forgot it what did you say miniki for because I'm studying Bulls history and miniki was the first Bowl they ever actually won and that this guy were telling him they want him to throw from the pocket more they don't want him to be mobile that's not to say the coaching staff is going to forget about his Mobility but what was the final grade he said he was a b was interesting and you know what that that tells me the same thing Peter that you said you know he's hard in himself he he he wants this happen he he he wants it uh to be an a grade and it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out you know we talked to Kelly Joiner you know he's in his six season here with the red shirts and injuries and all that and he he was there and of course we talked to M Harris and I said hey Mack you know if you take the last two games you guys are averaging a point and a half given up in two games he goes yeah but we want to pitch shutouts so that that that's a nice mentality to have on defense you know he said we we gave up three but it's points we want to put goose eggs up there so that was key yeah that was really key I know uh we talked about Jaylen Schuler earlier on in the game was disappointing because he used their leading tackler last year takes a hard hit a helmet right to the knee did we learn anything about his status they are not sure but they are going to uh get tested okay tomorrow or Tuesday they're going to move on and and they're going to do what's best for the kid and what's best for the program and uh again it I I'm hoping he's able to come back hope it's just a bad bruise he can come back but if it's not you know it's next man up the problem is it's your leading tackler you're trying to get the next man the game well coach goalie said I asked him is this big boy football he said absolutely well the line dominated both sides of the ball they were able to establish the run which means that the defense can't just pin it ears back and come after the quarterback so you know a good running game one of the quarterback's best friends and they just flat out shut down the run and again Bon cookman was averaging less than two yards a carry you know do the ma two fours you get the ball back that's eight yards so yeah all of a sudden uh bethon cookman they become onedimensional and that's what you want to do defensively is make a team one diens I because now you can see that the uh USF pass rushers they were coming at them with Reckless abandon because they knew hey you can't run the football You Gotta Throw yeah absolutely and I think that was also a key to South Florida's win tonight was the balance their offense especially when it comes to the running game five touchdowns on the night from the rushing game 37 minutes uh possession time overwhelming and when you can run the ball for over 200 yards and a uh let me see the final numbers here when it comes to uh runs for the night 231 yards of rushing Leo when you've got five touchdowns on the ground 231 total yards you dominate time of possession and then on top of it you put the knockout blow to that defense that's exactly what they did tonight versus the Wildcats and you know what Peter they averaged five yards of Rush and again I preach this to my le to my listeners I preach this to my readers do the math yeah two fives or 10 you got the first down the offense the first team offense was eight of 12 on third down that means they stayed on the field Bon cookman was four of 17 for the game that means defense was getting can feel that the coach he knows uh the identity of this team has been established you saw that tonight I think they would like again a little bit more consistency when it comes to Brown from throwing from the pocket but when you're able to run for over 200 yards and have that balance to your offense you become that much more dangerous and I definitely believe coach golish will have this team ready to go versus Alabama now a lot of people want to talk about some of the stories of the day around college football so let's go ahead and switch some gears here I got to give you credit my friend because you said it best on Wednesday night and I know our young analyst here Ryan Neil newest analyst there of amped up Sports talking about LSU football and around college football in general he didn't have close games all year so that that's huge that is absolutely huge let's look at this USF schedule of course they got Alabama next week then after that Southern Miss Miami coming to town September 21st that's a big one uh then they go to tane they play Memphis here uh UAB uh and then uh after that you have Florida Atlantic uh here then uh Navy also well excuse me uh yeah South Florida Florida Atlantic Navy here then at Charlotte uh Tulsa comes the town and then South Florida at Rice how many wins do you see this schedule right now presenting itself how many how many wins for this team in 2024 in your opinion for the USF Bulls I definitely think they can match the seven from last year okay if they stay healthy at the right spot they canete Pete can and Ray they can possibly win nine games yeah that's they have the talent on offense and defense I tell you what this may be the most talented team we've seen since the Charlie Strong era when when they were I think you know 10 and two 11 and one yeah during that during that time frame one year Well I want to tell you I think that's a Willie tager era right there that you're talking about well both of them yeah yeah both of them there any update on Cole Skinner the right T the Right Guard uh number 62 that was off went off injured early with the limping off the field again on his own volition got off the field was there any update on him as well no no not not nothing on the only update we got was that Scher was gonna have be looked at tomorrow Tuesday uh to be perfectly honest guys I got a feeling they know what's the diagnosis going to be and I think sadly I think he's going to be out I just he took what they were concerned about is he was making a cut back to the middle of the field and that leg was in the ground when it got hit that's the that's a nightmare because now your knee's Frozen if your if your foot's off the ground when you get hit on the knee usually it's a bruise but when you're foot's on the ground and it's frozen man now you're talking ligament damage now you're talking cartilage damage that's trouble yeah and he definitely took the helmet on the knee there didn't look really good at the at that point but he did get helped off the field at least they didn't have to bring out the cart but a scary scene and of course we know how talented Schuler was not only the leading tackler but all over the place early tonight I thought the penalty against him was completely egregious terrible the the ref should have been you know going to LensCrafters because they missed calls all night long including the one that was really odd because we're in the Press Box they having our sandwiches we couldn't figure out what you're trying to review at the end of the day it was fourth and goal USF doesn't score then you allow USF to try to run another play there which they nearly got away with you review it you missed the call I mean that was the kind of officiating crew we had all night long talk about that it's funny it's funny because they coach goish talked about this he said they went to Dallas and reviewed it and he came back and said yeah that was fourth down well in the third quarter they got an official apology from Dallas and said hey we were wrong you should have had another down had another down and it was because the first down was actually the down that got the first down so it it it shouldn't have been another it should have been another first down so and again goish was asking wait wait wait and the biggest problem was the the guy on the Seline L had a third down so everybody thoughts okay it's now fourth down we can go for it you know no so again I it was it was not really the best communication but you know what guys referees is their first game too you
