he said some things about Dak Prescott and this is the quote that Shireen almost nailed last segment Jerry Jones was asked with the CD lamb situation resolved how would you characterize the Dak Prescott negotiations lamb U wasn't here Dak is here uh so we have U really uh no more to do in those significant things that we talk about every time we meet uh to have this season uh on go by opening day so it'll remain like it's been on D for a second is there any indication that if you don't have something done by the opener that talks will discontinue that they'll just focus on the season no not U not any indication of any of that uh uh that's why I said it'll be just like it's been what more do you need to see for Dak Prescott to give him a new contract well I uh you could easily say uh if you hadn't seen it by now you haven't seen it and so I'm I'm such a fan of Dax and appreciate all of the great things that uh uh we all know that he's there da situation uh right now from me from my mirror has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott being quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys you know you alluded to this last segment we were talking about hold ends why would you ever hold in hold out look at the pressure it puts on Jerry Jones dax's here squeaky wheel gets the grease baby CD's squeaking Dak isn't Micah isn't he's not going to pay you until you force him to for as much money as that guy has made and as much as he has and the $250 million yacht he is not going to pay you until he has no choice but to pay you CD lamb put him in a position where he had no choice Dak hasn't yet Micah hasn't yet they both should have I'm not saying Dak should have held out because I think dak's in the perfect position yeah I'm just going to sit back I'm not holding out I'm going to get ready to go have a great year so somebody's GNA offer me 70 million forget about 60 I'm going for 70 when I hit the open market next year that was smart for Dak but stupid by the Cowboys because they're just sitting back saying oh we don't have to do anything we got him he's here yeah and he's laying the foundation to have the kind of year that's going to make it harder for you to keep him next year well and as you have written in the past Mike they should have redone this deal two years ago but they didn't have the foresight to do that because they're holding tight onto that money but we've got it we have a contract we don't need to redo that contract so here they are with him potentially becoming a free agent in March and it it's repeated by the Cowboys Time After Time After Time again it's the only thing that gets Jerry's attention and forces him to act look at him go all the way back to EMT Smith held out for two games Cowboys go 0 and2 finally gets him signed to what EMT Smith wanted from the start you could have had him in those first two games of what 1993 I believe it was yes and then look and then look at Zach Martin last year held out finally got what he wanted in training camp Ezekiel Elliott 2017 I believe it was held out finally got what he wanted Cowboys overpaid because they didn't they didn't negotiate with him before the hold out and then they became desperate the week of the season opener we've got to sign him September 3rd they get him sign before the season opener so this is a repeated thing time after and guess what Michael Parsons is going to be where CD lamb is this time next year year he's going to hold out and he's gonna is get his contract right before the season starts yeah and you're absolutely right and and look you know there were the almost cartoonish comments from Jerry Jones earlier in this week to Clarence Hill about why he's best suited to be the GM of the team hey folks the proof is right in front of our faces there are flaws they they do a great job of drafting and developing they do a piss poor job sorry London when it comes to figuring out what comes next in both directions why did your franchise tag Tony Pard with a broken ankle why did you pay Michael Gallup what the hell are you thinking and how do you continue to bungle Dak Prescott and you know you alluded to this that 4-year $160 million contract which at the time that it was negotiated and I saw the terms and understood the ramifications I said this is better than the Patrick Mahomes deal because it's going to put daak on the open market or Force the Cowboys to give him another contract sooner than later this thing was designed so the Cowboys would after three years at the L to say man these cap numbers are gigantic we have to redo this and they don't even blink they moved his cap number from 59 down to 55 and they're content to go into the season with Dak Prescott with a cap number 15 million higher than his annual average on his contract they're content to do that it makes no sense that money that could have been spent on other players like saquon Barkley so you get the deal done with Dak you drive the cap number down you spend money on other players you sign Micah Parson you sign CD lamb CD Lamb's cap number this year is going to be a lot lower than the 17991 million it was going to be on this new five-year deal micas is going to go up you can do all those things and you know until the fans truly understand it and do something about it it's not going to change because he is the ultimate Carnival Barker and he makes the fans think that they are all in and he's got that way of winking and he's got that Homespun charm but man you know it took me 23 years to figure it out this is all an act this is step right up give us your money come root for our team we're doing our best to win a Super Bowl oh no we're not but don't tell them that part we'll tell you we're doing our best to win a Super Bowl because that's what gets you to step right up and give us your money I tell you what Mike you know I live in Dallas Fort Worth right down the street from the stadium in Arlington a lot of neighbors who have seasoned tickets I have never seen I don't know if it's apathy or Brad sham says it's frustration and anger with this team but I haven't seen it before this is the first time really that that I've seen Cowboys fans not be excited about a season and they are frustrated they are angry and maybe they are a little bit apathetic as well but it it's interesting to me that that this is really the first year and if they don't start out well let's say they I think there's a a potential depending on how deshun Watson shoulder I think there's the potential that they could go to Cleveland and get blown out in week one and if they do all bets are off because I I I think Cowboys fans are going to be living and I we'll see how many show up you most have already paid their season tickets and Jerry Jones is very proud of that we had all these renewals and 990,000 season tickets or whatever they have I can't remember the number we'll see if they show up for that that first home game if they go into Cleveland and get blown out but I've never seen a Cowboys fan base for the most part like this really not looking forward to the season and already conceding that we've got no opportunity in the postseason continuing with the theme of Jerry being a Carnival Barker I think it was PT Barnum who said there's a sucker born every minute and Jerry is proving that by lining his pocket although he said under oath at the Sunday Ticket trial he's never taken a profit a single penny from the Dallas Cowboy organization which I don't know about that one but that's what he said um okay I had one more really good point to make and I now forget what it was I hate when that happens oh I know what it was wait oh Mike McCarthy this is why they're apathetic he should have been fired how can you justify how can you justify going 12 and five pulling an inside straight and winning the division because the Eagles collapsed and getting the crap kicked out of you by the Green Bay Packers the team Mike McCarthy coached and he said after the game nobody saw this coming Mike one of your many jobs is to see it coming one of your many jobs is to study the film of the opponent and realize that the Green Bay Packers are a very different team the past month or so than they were earlier this year they got something going on here they could beat us I need to see it coming the only way you properly prepare for any opponent is to see it coming even if it doesn't come you need to see it coming so you're properly motivated by the fear that it will and why didn't Jerry fire him because he's too cheap to pay him not to work for him so let's get through this lame duck year and then I'll go hire somebody else and it probably won't be bill bich because it'll be too cheap to pay him but it's a great story that we're all going to be talking about Bill bich to the Cowboys and we'll be tantalized at the possibility and he'll hire a coordinator from somewhere that he pays the lowest possible amount to and expects a different outcome next year we should have done something with Mike McCarthy so three consecutive 12- win regular season one playoff win over those three seasons I get that but you either extend him or you fire him you don't let him go into this season as a lame duck which he's called a challenge and I think it is a challenge when you have your whole entire coaching staff in the final year of their contracts but that's where they are Mike and it's because Jerry doesn't want to pay it's the same thing he did with Jason Garrett Jason got the extension one time and then contract expired the second time and they moved on to Mike McCarthy and if they don't do anything in the postseason this year it doesn't matter the regular season but if he doesn't do anything in the postseason they'll do the same thing with my McCarthy they'll move on after this year don't have to pay off that coaching staff there's no money involved yeeha we can go get us a new head coach and you're right I've said that all along it won't be bill belich because a he'll take attention away from Jerry and B they'll have to pay him which they're not going to do and I will never doubt your knowledge of the Cowboys but Jason didn't get an extension he finished his contract and then got another one and then finished that one and didn't so there was no it was a he was a free agent he could have left right he could have left and we don't see any NFL head coaches do that become a free agent and say see you later Jerry and I don't know whether that's part of the collusion that goes on with head coaching or what but but uh that's the reality no extensions no firings because I might have to pay you to not work for me even though it's all a a write off hi it's Mike Florio thanks for watching PFT on YouTube hit subscribe for the latest news and Analysis from pro football talk
