hello I'm Jimmy love and I'm presenting this assignment for Eda 76 200 ol31 as educational policy politics and social justice summer 23. Dr Michelle Whitaker professor the objective of this assignment is to present a brief summary of black lives matter a social justice movement in this presentation I will provide a brief background and history of black lives matter including when it was founded and who the founders were I will discuss briefly finding sources and sponsors I will answer the question who's equality and rights are being defended by black lives matter I will answer the question what are the current actions of the movement and I will also discuss briefly how the movement is growing I will explore briefly successes and barriers to the movement finally I will conclude by briefly discussing future outlooks of black lives matter black lives matter in 2013 black lives matter was created by three black women Patrice cullers and opal tamiti [Music] hashtag black lives matter yep black lives matter began with the social media hashtag after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin back in 2012 the movement grew nationally in 2014 after the deaths of Michael Brown in Missouri and Eric Garner in New York since then it has established itself as a worldwide movement particularly after the death of George Floyd and the hands of police in Minneapolis Minnesota most recently black lives matter has spearheaded demonstrations worldwide protesting police brutality and systematic racism that overwhelmingly affects the black community foreign Ty and rights are being defended by the black lives matter movement well according to the black lives matter website black lives matter Foundation Inc is a global organization in the U.S UK and Canada whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted with black communities by the state and vigilantes by combating and countering acts of violence creating space for black imagination and black Innovation and centering black joy we are willing immediate improvement in our lives [Music] black lives matter movement funding sources and sponsors the racial Justice movement has had a broad impact on philanthropic giving since 2015. according to the report by candid and the center for disaster philanthropy 35 of the 20.2 billion in U.S funding dollars from corporations foundations public Charities and high net worth individuals to address Kobe at 19 was explicitly designated for communities of color such news is Pleasant for BLM leaders because it takes money to fund black lives matter initiatives for instance in 2019 the foundation's expenses were approximately 8.4 million that includes Staffing operating and administrative costs along with activities such as Civic engagement rapid responses and Crisis Intervention in its report the BLM Foundation said individual donations via its main fundraising platform average 30.76 more than 10 percent of the donations were reoccurring the report does not State who gave the money in 2020 and leaders thinks its Mission and all proceeds from purchases made go directly to the black lives matter Global Network Foundation a non-profit organization according to the foundation record to share it with the Associated Press several chapters including the cities of Washington Philadelphia and Chicago were notified in 2019 of their eligibility to receive five hundred thousand dollars each in funding under Shopify Uber Comcast slack PayPal a16z Bumble DocuSign doordash match stick Ventures SoftBank Tick Tock and Ben and Jerry's what are the current actions of the black lives matter movement unfortunately black people's human rights are violated with great frequency in the United States of America and instances of Injustice police brutality against blacks police homicides against blacks and other systematic oppression are almost expected BLM has become a voice for the quiet and a defender of the bullied the charge to affect Justice for black people is ongoing within my own Community I do not see the BLM your science in flags as much as I did a few years ago in fact I do not think I see any at all however that is not an accurate indicator of the foundation's service and support for the black people in the U.S UK and Canada one of the current focuses for BLM is economic Justice particularly as it relates to the ongoing socio-economic impact of covid-19 on black communities foreign [Music] success the black lives matter movement has been highly effective over the past decade black lives matter aim to shed light on police brutality which it has done a list of some of the notable impacts of the movement or well black lives matter normalized the feeling of black paint at the hands of individuals sworn to treat everyone equally without personalized video we may not collectively know about George Floyd Freddie gray Eric Garner Sandra Bland or Kareem Gaines black lives matter shifted public opinion also for example a 2017 Cube study found that 54 of white people viewed officer involved shootings involving black people to be signs of a broader problem the fact that over 50 percent of white people think that policing has racial issues is a huge Achievement Black lives matter helped Usher in a series of policy and organizational changes to policing that include implicit bias trainings body worn cameras and bands on no knock warrants BLM helped illuminate the inordinate amount of money spent on policing and civilian payouts for police brutality that comes out of taxpayer dollars [Music] BLM stimulate Federal oversight for problematic cities such as Ferguson Louisville Baltimore and Minneapolis black lives matter altered data collection efforts in the academy police departments and the federal government to better assess what law enforcement policies do and do not work to reduce racial disparities BLM galvanized a new crop of elected officials and political actors black lives matters is etched in the yellow paint on the street outside of the White House BLM progress monitoring support for the black lives matter movement peaked in June 2020 at 52 a month after Floyd was killed at the height of the movement protesters marched across the country to express their outrage at George Floyd's death which was seen by millions in disturbing videos showing Floyd losing Consciousness as a white police officer now on his neck for almost 10 minutes since then public support to Black lives matter has continued to decline including after the shooting of Jacob Blake a black man by police officers in Kenosha Wisconsin in August 2020 and the conviction in April of former police officer Derrick shopping in the murder of Floyd since receiving 100 million plus dollars in funding in 2016 the movement for black lives a coalition of organizations and groups aimed to set a collective strategic policy agenda to create racial equity for black people across the United States has come under increased scrutiny regarding property purchases and potential Financial mismanagement within the black lives matter Global Network Foundation what does the future of black lives matter look like while unsolicited Martyrs have become symbols of the black lives matter movement one key statistic drives it black people bought 3.5 times more likely than white people to be killed by police when they are unarmed and not attacking and as in the case of Trayvon Martin more likely to be profiled because of race this strategy is intentional from the start black lives matter was committed to being a leaderful movement leading from the Grassroots up by allowing victims survivors and people with personal experience to speak out and stand at the front of protest marches this was a smart decision [Music] Tamir rice Tanisha Anderson Maya Hall Walter Scott Sandra Bland Michael Brown These notable names are etched into history systematic racism and acts of violence caused their death but movements like BLM prevent them from dying in vain Molina Abdullah a black scholar activist and co-founder of Los Angeles's black lives matter chapter says there has been steady progress in growing BLM worldwide in another eight years from now Abdullah hoped to BLM has fundamentally transformed policing systems such as qualified immunity and Powerful police associations she believes reinvesting the funds will make communities safe activists [Music] [Music] why why in another another eight years from now Abdullah such as Solutions she believes ladies safe safe [Music] [Music] according to research about how change happens the most successful modern social movements embrace the leaderful approach understanding that it is both effective and protective without a charismatic Soul Leader the movement is less vulnerable to attacks such as the tragic assassinations of civil rights leaders in the 1960s most notably the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr the project is now a member of the global network of more than 40 chapters the members organized and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities by the state and vigilantes black lives matter is an ideological and political intervention in the world where black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise [Music] affirmation of black folks Humanity black folks contributions to society and black folks resilience in the face of deadly oppression in the U.S alone 15 to 20 million people participated in the black lives matter protest more than 4 400 cities and towns around the globe have held BLM demonstrations since May 2020.
