borders the ball carrier and he comes up with seven yards they continue to win the battle up front when they've wanted to run the football on first down they've had a lot of success it's such a luxury for an offensive coordinator and a signal caller when you can the Playbook has just open up because the the line of scrimmage are winning it every time and especially on those first downs cuz like second down right now you could take a shot if you wanted to they're going to keep it on the ground and that's enough for a first down border another carry the red freshman from Sacramento if you're wondering how far apart Sacramento is from San Jose it's about a 2-hour Drive Northeast of San Jose so a lot of these guys know each other from playing Pop Warner football playing youth football playing High School football Allstar camps CU these two cities not very far apart and you have a lot of respect for the other guys too so you kind of understand Tendencies and know which guy goes to which High School [Applause] are threatening to come and here they come with the pressure on no place to go he'll be sacked a great Blitz that time Robert rahime another play the rocket he has made his presence Bel in the first half he really does have some great closing speed but we've been waiting on the Spartans to dial up the pressure all out Blitz that time no one there to take on that's actually the running back Ari Kanan borders number 14 he's got to be the last line of defense to give Bennett just a little bit more time sets up a second L of three on the play and I got a feeling they're going to be pretty conservative here on Third and 19 yeah not really much you could do with this stage but to try to get back some of the yardage play the field position game but the aggressive nature of the Spartans on defense has changed in this series it's paying off for him across the middle it's Grover across the 20 and he's hit hard they get it just past the original line of scrimmage 11 yards on on the play a good job there the pressure from the Spartans they got the big play that pushed them way back and they have dialed up the pressure now you were talking about it early and it's had an impact it makes a massive difference on a lot of these series when in early Downs you put pressure on the quarterback just get them behind the chains you want them in second and long third and long the pressure sometimes can help you do that so great to see it if you're a Spartan fan they dialing up the McGuff to punt Coleman Waits at his own 33 and a flag comes in before the of events here but for Kaden Bennett it's such a long throw it's across to the other side of the field so it's going to take a while for the ball to get there he's got a clean pocket it just kind of sails up the underneath Defender able to pick it off backto back big plays for the Spartans the touchdown and the pick right after momentum is completely swinging in their Direction first and 10 at position if your a corner and you got these switch routes coming at you and coming at you how do you defend that there's no disruption you're not disrupting the quarterback you're not disrupting the receivers at the line of scrimmage and you don't have a safety over the top so there's no way that you're going to affect that play play without some type of disruption they haven't done any of it I mean and as you as we discussed during halftime like these dudes are doing it constantly yeah constantly constantly where when when are you going to take note of that go to the drawing board and find a way to stop it because that's where they made all the big play I love switch routes because I used to run a lot of those at the Giants with coach gilbride and and when he was our offensive coordinator and there's nothing you could do talk to me like I'm dumb really quick so switch routes is the wide receivers are seeing the second and they're just crossing in front or is there more so think about if there's two receivers lined up on to the boundary or to the open side of the field they get there whether it's a motion or is two receivers getting there to begin the play and then at the snap of the ball they're both cutting in like this literally switch routes where they're replacing each other's responsibilities confusing and then one guy typically for the most part they're both running verticals and that puts his stress on the the front side corner and the safety which guy am I supposed to cover if it's quarters they both have a responsibility to cover all of that but then you got Nick Nash with his ability he can he's been getting by all those guys all the the entire first too much manto man with no disruption exactly but if it's one thing for certain and two things for sure they're going to go to Nick Nash yes they are like period you look at the targets he has seven Targets in the first half the next leading person Tran hurry the next receiver he only has three targets so they're going to go to him especially on third Downs all all the time and when they have to have it they have to take him out of the game got to take him out of the game which is tough to head we can't have it it's just unfortunate because you don't teach people to tackle with their hands and now this guy's using his head to protect himself what do you expect right there should he go down and it was just on you cuz no matter what you got two seconds or 10 seconds I'm covering you period so that's my job now I'm worried is Champ a team player because he kind of sounds like he just wants to do his own thing I just want to do my job okay that's champ Island there uh no but Travis Hunter is special and the wide receiver skills are clearly there he just looks comfortable I think as a receiver he just looks comfortable and I think part of that is having a great rapport with his quarterback I think he looks comfortable but I think he's going to have some plays this year on the defensive side of the ball that are going to wow you and it's going to leave you we're going to be having this discussion all week all year long whether whether he should play receiver at the next level or whether he should play corner you talked about him looking comfortable the thing that I think gives him the advantage while he's playing receiver is understanding as a def defensive back he knows what what stems looks like because he does it on the offensive side he knows how to put defensive backs in certain positions that's the reason why I look at him and I'm like man this dude looks Comm commissioner FL Nar great to see you I'm glad that we're coordinated in our blue here got this is a homecoming for you here it's got to be pretty sweet to get a chance to come home and opening night here for the Spartans yeah it's really special got a lot of friends and family here today I like that a lot all right so one of the most exciting things for the mount West is the college football playoff has expanded to 12 schools and now a real chance this year for the Mountain West to get into the playoff absolutely of the nine FCS leagues the top five Champions get an AQ into that playoff and we certainly are angling to be in that selection and one of the ways to kind of get there was in this non-conference schedule the strength of that talk about the importance of of how important it is to perform well in these type of games I got to tell you our coaches set up their schedules we have 35 games against A4 opponents this year that's more the next closest conference is at 27 so they really set themselves up for at large selection they just got to get it done on the field well the beauty of it is for years I've always felt like the Mountain West is not scared to play anyone anywhere anytime and that's a real Beauty they're willing to take on tough challenges including this weekend with some tough games coming up for the Mountain West on the road we have a lot of big ones this weekend Saturday all day long Bowl seasons they've got a new coach and Coach Ken and there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm right now for the Spartan program absolutely and uh it's starting to turn it on and I think one of the things that's special about the Mountain West when we do lose coaching and players we always reload well speaking of reloading there are a lot of new head coaches this year new coach here for San Jose State but there are a lot of new coaches we're going to see one of those coaches San Diego State is our next game on Saturday excited to see what sea Lewis could do for the azte well absolutely and it's a combination of really strong new talent but also some season veterans coming back to the league and it's really really exciting yeah coach Coach Ken is certainly one of those how much time do you get a chance to spend with some of these football coaches I know their schedules are busy your schedule was busy how much time do you get with them you know we meet with them regularly and then I try to visit campus and sit with them you know during the season and offseason so try to get a couple touches a year well it's so great for Darius and I we've covered the conference for a long time to have a new partnership now with TNT Sports to give another Avenue to really showcase the conference and another opportunity for the rest of the country to see what's happening with Mountain West football yeah it's an unbelievable surprise for us we were so excited it came a little bit late to the table but wow production quality viewership and then
