a former care a who prayed on the most vulnerable seniors stealing tens of thousands of dollars from them has been sentenced cvb's Michelle Bernardo has more on the time she'll serve and the actions prosecutors describe as reprehensible and deplorable her name is Anna chamel a former carade who pleaded guilty to 34 charges related to defrauding seniors of $60,000 and another 100,000 in attempted fraud terrible I think she was she was um evil one of her 20 victims is 83 old Leonard after having a stroke and falling very sick chamel showed up at his door saying she was with Fraser health and could help him get a free cleaning service it was a lie she took my credit cards but I didn't give her my uh password so I don't know how she got to be able to use it he says chamel ended up stealing about $7,000 from him it was hard it affected me for a while chamel had worked at a pharmacy where she obtained information on clients then she'd pretend to either be a CARiD or healthcare worker with Fraser Health carrying fake ID a medical kit and wearing scrubs during Victim Impact statements the court heard how the Betrayal of seniors by someone they trusted had devastating impacts both financially and emotionally Carol Matthews hired chamel through an agency to care for her 95-year-old father she ended up taking his his ID his Visa um and cash from him the first day she was there she says the thefts made him untrusting of others he lost his independence and had to move to a care home he was too nervous he was too scared cuz he was thinking that people were at the door people were knocking people were trying to get in chamel who reoffended even after being arrested and released on an undertaking apologized to her victim saying she's trying to make herself a better person her lawyer said she committed the offenses to keep her and her now ex-husband financially afloat the judge called for actions premeditated following a joint submission from crown and defense the judge sentenced chamel to four years minus time served plus ordered her to pay restitution the sentence not long enough say some victims and their families Michelle bero CTV News Siri
