88-year-old Sue Fleming is rethinking her favorite snack liver worst after she fell ill as part of a deadly leria food poisoning outbreak linked to a recall of 7 million pounds of B's head deli meats I just want to say it was hell I've never been so sick in all my life and felt so separated from everybody it was like I was here and the world was out there it was strange she and her husband are suing boor head and schnook Market's ink which sold the deli meat three people have died in the leria outbreak and more than 40 were sickened Sue spent 9 days in a hospital and 11 days in a rehabilitation center last month about the second day of the hos in the hospital they said it's leria and once I figured out remembered what that was realized how how deadly that can be um and they start talking about they have to do some scans and uh uh to make sure it hasn't gone to her brain and given her menitis which scared the death you know death out of me um or to an inflammation of her heart which also could be you know very serious so the whole thing was really quite scary people over the age of 65 as we age our immune systems um are not as robust as they once were and what can happen is the leria um Can the pathogen can cross from your gut into your blood and causes invasive illness I always say when when in doubt throw it out so if you have deli meat sitting in your in your refrigerator or quite frankly in your freezer um and you don't know where it came from uh you you know I would recommend being cautious right and not necessarily risking uh serious illness it's very very very serious and get help right away immediately thanks to Pat we got to the hospital and had excellent care from there
