the new Google pixel is here and apple already plans to destroy [Music] it hello everyone welcome to the all future podcast I got some stats for you I got some stats for you I'm pretty sure that um there's at least one person out there watching this video that is not subscribed really so that I think that's statistically likely so if you are that guy please consider subscribing um and uh yeah I appreciate you uh guys being here and checking out what we do every week thank you very much yeah coming off a a good week my man Ryan here was uh on Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel playing the drums looking good looking good on there uh he was on last Tuesday's episode hosted by Jeff Goldblum so if you guys want to see him and uh I think a pretty good performance man it was fun to watch uh not not a lot of Apple Vision Pro in there though so I didn't I brought it to wear on stage but then you know we decided against it some rights issues uh yeah I can link it though I'll link it at the bottom of the video because the performance is on YouTube now oh cool oh well there you go that's the easier way to see watch on YouTube so um but uh of also news last week new pixels man new pixels um coming in I I always just off the top man what do you what are your impressions of the pixel I have thoughts on it but I don't want to taint your your view of it in any way like I mean it seems like a pretty solid Android phone like one probably one of the best options you could get and I could see the draw that you like that it's made by Google as opposed to like a company using Google software so there's a lot of integration that they can do right there and every time I see Google pixel photos and videos it does tend to look pretty good so I don't know I have a decent um I don't a decent opinion of the Google pixel from the outside what are your thoughts no same man same if I if I was to buy an Android phone this is the phone I would get absolutely right um so but it it it's interesting I'll just I'll throw this at you too do you are you familiar with the actual sales numbers on the pixel phone at all no they're not even in the same not the same not even the league but like the same Planet really as like Galaxy and iPhone cells um you know Galaxy and iPhone cells are regularly you know 200 million plus units in a year um you know and some you know well into 200 million sometimes you know 250 260 million year and it kind of fluctuates depending on but that's basically where Samsung and Apple do a year in phone sales um pixels sell like 10 million units man like nothing compared to it like like well well below where these phones are at which always kind of surprises me I'm surprised they're not more popular but I guess like you know all the carriers and everything they're pushing Galaxy so and that that's I mean it's not it's you mean you see the the Galaxy line is almost the Android phone like you actually see people with that all the time you know that's the most popular thing I think people see and I only see pixels with like Tech blogger dudes and stuff you know like that seems to be their Market that makes sense yeah I can see that because it's like you know Apple you're not going apple and then you have your equivalent over here Samsung and they do have a whole ecosystem obviously Google has a great ecosystem as well yeah but uh yeah Samsung has a little bit more of that built up over the years and they're always pushing the next phone and the next big thing and they have those big features and they have the watch and they have all the different stuff and yeah I guess they're they're just kind of the name right you think of Apple and Samsung with smartphones and then it's like oh Google also makes a smartphone oh really cool oh really yeah it's pretty good you should check it out yeah and I always like the design of them too man they look pretty good but they actually just released new ones the uh pixel 9 so they have the pixel 9 pixel 9 Pro 9 Pro XL and 9 Pro fold for $799 $9.99 $1,99 and $77.99 respectively which the fold thing is still crazy to me the that price tag I mean it makes sense it's a fold you're getting in one yeah yeah it's a good deal when you think about it that way that's true but $1799 as a starting entry price for a phone um regardless of capability that's that's quite a lot but people people do like it obviously a small portion of people like it because it's not the most popular phone but uh the main stuff from this event obviously these phones bring new chips and new all sorts of Hardware advancements and stuff and stuff with the cameras but the big thing and the big news from this event is AI capabilities and what this has shown us is that Google even according to the biggest apple analysts out there like Mark Gman Apple is very far behind when it comes to AI features because Google demoed a bunch of AI features on these new pixels which has new chip specifically designed for it and it's already doing stuff today that Apple has maybe hinted at being able to do on the phon we may get in 2025 if not never right yeah and that's and I think a big thing here is that you know upgrading that Hardware in there so it can do stuff locally you know we're Gemini Nano is their on device AI model or whatever and this significant improvements of that with these new chips and everything so that's kind of cool and I think that's a good talking point is saying like oh like at all the stuff I can do without going to the cloud because I think people are a little leery about AI Cloud stuff um so that's that's neat and I you obviously you know Mark Gman a pretty well informed Apple guy like I trust him that he is he has probably used demos of stuff that we haven't seen and talked to people you know who have unreleased unannounced stuff you know so he probably has a pretty good idea of it I think though there is a question here though of is can you say if you say the statement apple is behind Google and AI right you could say that about apple and a lot of things that Apple still absolutely wins at right um you know Apple doesn't have the greatest zoom lens on a camera phone right like apple doesn't like there's all kind of apple doesn't even make a fault right like there's there's a ton of different stuff you can just start throwing and saying like well Apple doesn't necessarily do a lot of things the best what Apple's always been really good at though is finding the things people really like and do care about and being really good at that mhm and when I see some of these features he's talking about I'm not sure uh people are really going to care about them right like I think a lot of them still feel very gimmicky to me um the I don't know what's the marketing term for it where they you can add in uh add me add me there you go so the idea would be you know me and you are hanging out it's only the two of us we want to get a picture of us together so I take a picture of you against the wall then we switch and then I take a picture against the wall and it and it melts us together I this this is 100% a gimmick thing cuz I can't imagine anyone really wanting to do this like let's just take a selfie or something man like yeah like like this artificial version of us together or whatever it is um but so it's that kind of stuff it's that kind of stuff I think that apple is behind in so I don't think it's going to matter yeah I tend to agree I watch through the event itself and they talked about like the tensor G4 chip which is their designed by Google deep mind chip to run their most advanced AI models obviously that is important and that's bringing all these things we're talking about where it can do stuff on device but at the event itself they showed off some features I think one of it one of them was like pointing at something uh a list of tour dates for an artist and then saying when can I go to one of these events or am I available on that date so then it's cross referencing with your calendar and all that stuff and actually funny enough at the event this failed twice in a row and then they had to switch phones they had to switch phones to one that it worked on showing us that obviously none of this stuff is perfect yet but it was Steve Jobs would have fired the room like all you are gone yeah but they were finally able uh to do that at the event and then they have their Gemini live which is kind of like chat GPT voice mode and the voices are very solid on there so basically it's kind of showing us hey they already have like a quote unquote more advanced Siri but it's available today and man every time I say that just sets off all the devices but some other features are that magic editor like the adme that you said and the pixel Studio image generator pixel screenshots which is kind of like searchable photos but for screenshots and German's quote here is that since all these things are available today Apple and Google are not only miles apart in AI they are in a completely different universe so he's really going hard saying apple is behind here even though uh you would arue argue the that the definition of behind could be subjective that's what I would say right is it yeah like we don't really know how this is going to play out and what people are going to care about it REM and some of this stuff is so gimmick level you know that I don't think people are going to care at all it reminds me of I think it was the Samsung phones had like the astrophotography mode or something where would take pictures of the moon like at the Thousand Times Zoom or something but it was like completely like AI enhanced and was like literally had like Moon JPEG files like so it's like you're not really seeing you know it wasn't really working like that at all um so it's that kind of thing that I think Apple cares about that much um and I I want to be clear though I'm not taking away some from what Gemini does is some really cool stuff I think some mly useful stuff some stuff that I 100% H I hope Apple does integrate you know um but it seems like that's the kind of stuff apple is going to be looking at if you look at even what German says like the things that apple is really good at the their model is like good at just natural language kind of stuff text summary of things that's that sort of thing those are the more practical things you know like and you know and we've already kind of seen when Apple had their WWDC event the kind of looking through the calendar stuff and organizing it like talking to maps and you know doing that kind of AI personal assistant functions I think apple is going to do those really well yeah I think the bigger problem is maybe just there there's going to be a perception gap for sure especially when Apple releases those iPhones or talks about them in a couple weeks maybe we don't know the exact date is yet and they're like well what's shipping on this thing yeah and it's not going to be any of those cool features that again Google is saying hey you can buy this today man we'll s we'll ship it to you and you can be using these tomorrow yeah I'm very curious to see as well the Google features are they on the level where it still feels like a beta and it's like oh I can use this today but oh it's you know it still has a lot of work to be done or is it much more impressive cuz objectively when we look at it Google has been developing Gemini for a long time at this point and they're very much ahead of what whatever Apple intelligence is going to be but yeah are the features then eventually getting trickled down and being delivered to customers actually better from a customer perspective and yeah we'll have to see about that but the security stuff is always a concern here and it's very interesting because Gemini does have a nano security protocol and that's because this is running on device I think that overall running more and more on Device just makes consumers feel more comfortable obviously it speeds things up and all of that stuff but I think if you just talk about a certain level of it being on device and being secure on device I think consumers are going to be okay with it and even though we saw things like that Microsoft uh recall feature where it turns out you can access all this stuff that it's saving kind that's own device but incredibly vulnerable yeah even with that though I I don't know I think people have learned from that I think we'll see Google learn from that and make sure that this is secure uh I can't picture people being too concerned about it as long as you're telling them it's all handled on device but what what do you think people don't seem to be concerned about this anyway yeah like like how much of us of our information is tracked and monitored and cataloged constantly yeah constantly you know so like and people don't seem to care you know like that's uh there's a just a little bit of an aside but there's a big leak of like pretty much every American Social Security number you see this uh yeah and I was talking to somebody about it and they're like oh man like are you worried about this I'm like absolutely not because uh I'm 100% sure someone already has my social security number right like all this like our dad is just out there there incredible levels and people just don't seem to care that much like I mean Apple kind of has used this marketing idea you know with the Apple privacy commercials and they'll talk about how they prevent tracking and all this kind of stuff which is true to an extent of what they can control but there's we're absolutely still being tracked pretty effectively through the apps we use all time all that information is already going out there they already know a an immense amount about you I don't know how much more they would possibly learn with the AI stuff anyway you know so I think this is going to go out the window if it's turns out that it's just which it already we already kind of know is that it's going to be better in the cloud so as long as like you're kind of implying there as long you kind of give lip service too and we do a blot of it on device people are going like oh cool and then move on and that's all they're going think MH and I guess some of those foundational things that you're doing hopefully can be totally done on device like where it's cross referencing messages with calendar and stuff like that and the stuff that's really dealing with your most sensitive info might actually be able to be completely done on device and then the bigger stuff that are bigger questions or bigger requests gets sent out to the cloud um but we'll have to see how all of that works and how Google implements that to make it clear that this is on device oh this is being sent to the cloud are they going to be clear our customer is going to know yeah I wouldn't even know I mean Apple's going to have that very clear delineation of when something's leaves device or has to go to a third party thing you know so is Google done something like similar like that it doesn't seem like but I guess we'll you know we'll see how how they work it out and the thing is like you know so much of that stuff it seems like it'd be super easy to do on device right like the cross reference a calendar with maps or you know with email that that seems that's no problem the problem is is the Myriad of ways a human would ask for that data in understanding that right like actual running the language interpretation model there on device the llm like like actually the thing that makes it AI like that is what it's kind of starts to get difficult right so um yeah I guess we'll see like whose kind of version of that is actually working the best mhm so when it comes to these features let's say apple really does end up disappointing next year throughout 2025 we're not seeing a ton and then Google is actually delivering on all of these AI features I think someone like you or I is not going to switch but do you see people in the Apple ecosystem deciding to switch over to the Google pixel no yeah that's crazy that's the craziest thing you ever said here no there's no way that's G to happen right I don't think that AI right now is a driver for phone purchases and is probably a few years away from that even the people who are doing it the best um because you're you there's a huge gap in uh kind of education to the general populace of what this thing is and what this thing can do um so it's going to take a while to get that going and think about any kind of Technology adoption um we're talking another video about Apple watches and how like At first you're like oh what I don't really think I need this thing yeah and then you know slowly people saw the use of it and now you see them on you know you go to whatever you go to Disneyland everyone there's got an Apple Watch on right like any any any kind of place like that you're going to see a lot of Apple watches yeah um airpods the same thing like all you can know all these product categories but it it takes a little bit um so yeah like I think I think that might be a valid question in a couple years like people actually switching because of AI abilities but n times soon yeah I could see Android people switching to pixels so you're already in the Android ecosystem and maybe you like your Samsung phone but they're not delivering quite what Google is on the AI side and it doesn't require too much of an ecosystem change because you're still within Android uh I could see some of those people switching maybe that's a great question like I don't even like I got to ask somebody who like is a you know a Samsung User it's like hey why don't you get a pixel mhm and their answer is probably going to be like I don't even know what that is but uh but yeah I because it just the pixel seems like a better product to me and I'm sure there's some there's some things that Samsung does better there's just not a current off the top of my head but yeah it just seems like the pixel's a cool phone M definitely but it all comes back in this video at least to Apple's what what could be their advantage in this space and even though Google is like today we have this and Apple's behind um what could be their advantage and the first thing I think of is just that General waiting until it's a solid working feature I think that's the big thing that we'll see and people will not care if it's even if it's a year later than Google delivering a feature if Google is doing a lot of hallucinating and all of these things and it's failing maybe those demos uh showed us what it's going to do I I think it's just one example but still it's a bad look though if you fail the one time you're doing the demo like you know it's like oh like now we're the odds right like it's like oh is going to have like a 10% failure rate or something you know yeah versus on the Apple side well for one we know they're going to pre-film their keyote so uh their thing won't fail yeah their thing's not going to fail but uh yeah for two I feel like they're gonna not release it until they're like this is solid and it's delivering us consistently with answers that we're really satisfied with I think that's and that's what the whole delay is right now I think is they're probably getting a lot of hallucinations and testing and they're like this is we got to have a much higher success rate before we ship yeah and then of course they just always have the Apple ecosystem they have us locked in they have tons of customers locked into the ecosystem and it's like oh it's much easier that I can just wait for Apple to give me some good AI features than switch entirely over to another a great Point like even even 5 10 years when the AI systems are really impressive like it has to be more impressive than the money that I've spent on Apple watches and airpods and iPads or whatever like that's how impressive it has to be that's going to be hard to do I think so it's funny to look at this and think of like what our title is is like Apple's plan to overtake or destroy Google's pixel but it's those numbers you talked about we're talking 20 times iPhone sales even matter they already destroyed them so they've already destroyed them but I'm I'm thinking it's going to be a little more of Google pixel climbing up the ranks of Android users and getting I don't know taking a chunk out of Samsung cuz they're showing hey we have this deep integration because we're the ones developing the software we can do it at a core level with Android and our Gemini features and all this stuff and then maybe it gets some Android users to be like okay I can still say within my Android system I have to give up a little bit of my Samsung ecosystem but it's not the same as switching completely to another OS exactly
