what's up cats fans Paul here from the Hoops crew to talk about this guy Ole Dempsey and how through a little bit of luck and circumstances and how things have played out is now right in the frame to be the 2024 AFL NAB rising star and he really I guess highlighted that with his efforts this week against the Tigers where he got 27 disposals and and kicked three goals and was one of the best on ground by a long way and it's kind of Ki off this conversation I think quietly in the background mostly amongst cat supporters so far but I want to present it larger scale here and discuss in a bit more detail discuss the possibility that this year could be the year of a cat winning the rising star again so let's kind of pick through what ol's done and then we'll start to kind of Benchmark that against not the rest of the comp as the AFL site he does but against those who've also been nominated for the rising star now as of this time of recording I'm recording this on a Sunday there's there's matches still to be played the round 12 winner hasn't been announced yet of course because the round is not complete so we are recording this uh based on the first 11 rounds plus opening round of the season so far and I am also working on the Assumption and this is why I think we can start entertaining this a little bit the fact that both Harley Reed and Sam Darcy who were I think up until this point clear Front Runners are probably out of the race now both are very likely to be suspended off the back of different incidence over the course of the weekend again as of the time of recording we don't have a verdict for Harley Reed just yet Sam dar's been offered weeks um and it's it's really fascinating to see where this is going to go but also what this means for this year's winner I think there's something to be said about the whole fairest component especially because they were footballing acts in both cases they might have been misguided they might have been a bit heavy-handed but they were footballing acts and so a bit like the branow where's the line I think there's conversation to be had there about who isn't isn't eligible but our current our current circumstances are what they are and so we're going to explore what 's done and then we're going start to compare that to the likes of Darcy Wilson and George wardor and and some of the others that have that have been nominated so far this year so olle was our round one recipient the first real round of football for the year not going to accept any of that opening round BS he was our he was our the nominee for round one he was our nominee for round one he's our only cat to been nominated so far but we haven't exactly debuted many up to this or played enough players with that little level of experience so far this season and what we've seen in more recent weeks as I scroll down here and I get his week by- we numbers is a guy who's finding a lot of the ball at different points and we can see that you know his efforts against obviously Richmond this weekend but we saw it against the Gold Coast we've seen it against Hawthorne he's kind of been mid teens the rest but he's always involved and what the stats don't necessarily show like he kicks a couple goals himself what the stats aren't necessarily showing I don't know if I can get some Advanced stats no I think for this it keeps it pretty simple um what we're seeing here is a guy who's heavily influential in thrust forward he brings the defensive pressure we can see it especially in the first six to seven weeks uh when the cats are really up and about and he kind of fell off a little bit like the team did for a while there um and we've discussed all that sort of thing in in great detail in the reaction videos and uh the the live post game live calls the chaps have been chatting about a lot there's a whole range of different things that kind of Afflicted the team and Olie certainly suffered a little bit for that in the meantime as well but his he's getting his hands on the ball he's hitting the scoreboard he's score scoring involvements his goal assists they're right up there and so he's positioned himself really really well in this void that's now been created by Sam Dary and Harley Reid to make a charge for for winning the rising star this year but let's take a look at some of the comptition and who may or may not have a say in this race before the end of the season so we flick to another winner and these are all just in random order that I was kind of searching him and grabbing him so we search next for Darcy Wilson of the Saints who you can kind of see he's tracking above average and in a range of key stats here of course um it's it's benchmarked against your position as well and there's there's a whole bunch of explanation that if if you need to kind of look into those sings you absolutely can find out what you need to know there from the AFL website but let's kind of explore a little bit of what he's been doing and you can see with Darcy he's he's not necessarily having the same highs that o has had but he's been a little bit more consistent in terms of the the number of times he's getting his hands on the ball he's hitting the scoreboard if we check that goals colum he's hitting the scoreboard about as often he's kicked nine for the year versus 's what's 's at 12 now 's 1210 versus 99 they they're actually playing very similar sorts of roles I'm actually surprised I guess that 16 seven I guess he's been classified as a midfielder forward versus the whereas the medium forward for for Dary Wilson which you know forwards tend to get less of the ball and so he's the average is is lower and he's excelling above that but he is pretty comparable in a lot of ways in a in a range of different statistics but of course O's done more of the brilliant stuff I think he's he's really stood out a lot more uh we can compare some of the other stats tackles and those sorts of things they're similar in a lot of areas 29 tackles 10 goals six to Ole versus nine goals nine 29 tackles like there's there's a lot of similarities here sorry I shouldn't have said 1210 before that was career for OE uh he's he's you know the the AFL fantasy not that's a measure but you know it's a combination of all these different stats very comparable these two are very much in the same sort of Ballpark and Darcy Wilson now that uh the the market is likely to change a little bit not that I want to base things on beding and those sort things because it's you know kind of irrelevant but it is an indicator of what the people the masses are kind of thinking about this and Darcy Wilson's considered one of the favorites and I think oie is gonna come tearing up this chart sometime soon if he continues to track as he has been especially more recent weeks let's turn our eyes to George wardor next who was one of the top picks he's an absolute gun in year two oh player statistics is in his second season so can obviously strike year one for the mix he's played 10 up to this point he's missed he missed round six and I'm sure there was something oh no sorry as of the time recording North haven't played round 12 yet but actually you know they got to they got a buy right I don't know I should know this I should know this there's football on as we speak uh yeah they've got the buy this weekend so I think the thing that you know is going to hurt George a little bit is the fact that obviously North has lost a lot of football so far and that definitely doesn't uh definitely doesn't help his case he's you know tracking fairly well in a range of areas but for his position as a midfielder pretty average we know he's going to be a beast George wardor is going to be an absolutely wonderful player but he doesn't have the the flare that Ollie does he hasn't been been able to really assert and dominate in the same way that Ollie has but again I would argue he's been more consistent he's had one genuinely down game there against the line Lions 11 disposal for midfielder is not great no matter your level of experience but I would say otherwise he's he's been pretty consistent over the course of the the games he's played so far and that definitely is favorable but I would say he's probably tracking a little bit behind olle in that space but of course he was a top draft pick and so people are going to be noticing that I think Ole is going to have to be a slower burn he's got a couple of years in the system he's not necessarily at the Forefront of people's minds anymore but this could work out okay for him Caleb wi now as cats fans we're not loving Caleb Windsor at the moment he did a few great things against us that cost us a win but he's played 11 games for the season and again plays that very similar well actually He's listed as a midfielder but he's kind of you've seen him playing bit of mid you've seen him playing a bit forward he's uh the the yeah the marking and the tackle pressure that he brought against us that was his best game for the season that was the the week he got nominated I believe and um argue with kind of what he put together in his in his game against us but again I think OE has him covered he you know the disposals lower uh is in the middle of a live game as I record this though the D are getting pounded by the freem manal Dockers as as we speak they're down by 51 points I don't think there's any coming back from that I suspect Caleb WIS is not having an absolute Ripper for for the demons as we speak I'll take a quick look where are we Caleb Windsor Caleb Windsor Caleb Windsor he's had five disposals and it's uh somewhat into the third quarter so I don't think he's necessarily going to be winning any heart major hearts with his output this week and he it does kind of match with a bit of a trailing away since since that game so I I don't think Caya wins is a massive concern but of course he plays for a team that is winning like he's playing for a winning team a team that's winning more than they lose and that's that's attractive it catches the eye you're more likely to stand out because people are more likely to watch that team play anyway even the selectors there's that natural bias lman next who is one that hasn't really been on my radar for the most part this season he's played 11 games disposal counts not overly High let's keep in mind he's playing as a medium forward so again very similar to Darcy Wilson from before and tracks you know quite a bit below Darcy Wilson but he has hit the scoreboard a bit he's kicked 14 goals 10 so far for the year in a team that is struggling despite how brilliant Brisbane could and should be they're struggling and he and he's doing a pretty good job in in lie of poor team performances and that's obviously highlighted by fiveg goal performance against the Tigers uh back in round 10 that's that's going to catch eyes 14 disposals and five goals five goals W actually six shots on goal from 14 disposals pretty good turnout for a kid that's in his second season but he's you know a bit more up and down some of the lows have been really low but some of those May well have been coming off the bench I I think O's got him covered for the time being Riley Sanders is one that I genuinely thought at the beginning of season would be a real front runner for it but he's not necessarily been getting the game time he's been a bit inconsistent there's been injury those sorts of things as well H he's bit more up and down the highs have been good 22 disposals 20 disposals 23 another 20 back with his return game against the swans 15 against against the pies like there's there's plenty of good things there he does track quite well he's 19 old he's got that you know he's got that that way you want to see a midfielder play he really brings it fits fits the bill as a midfielder forward he actually plays that equivalent sort of role according to the AFL listing for benchmarking those things he plays that similar role to olle and if you believe that then 's got him covered in a few of those areas not all but a a couple of those areas and uh he's behind him in others but um oh sorry that's Ollie again lack of game time could be the thing that brings brings Riley undone here the fact that he's missed that chunk of games from round six to round from round six through 11 and then you know there's buys there's the doggies performances across the board his tackling pressure though has been extraordinary he's he's a bit of a tackling animal and I love that but again Ole does things that he doesn't where where Riley bringing that defensive pressure and and laying far more tackles all's kicking goals and you know there's there's something to be said for a bit of balance there so I think it'll be tight I think between these two but I would say as of as things stand right now and I know we've got the the jalong lenzo across things these things but I feel like O's got him covered M Roberts was the round zero nomination and I would say I mean he's had some brilliant games he obviously got the round zero nomination there but obviously you kind of have to put that through the lens of all only less than half the teams in the competition played that weekend honestly probably deserved one for the for the game against Richmond where they lost mind you uh but 27 disposing that one it's his best game for the season again little bit more up and down there's there's some inconsistencies in the results goal output is obviously a thing as well but he does he does play a more defensive role I think I think O's okay at the moment but again a winning team and so that that adds points Jed Walter was a fancy going into it because this kid is an absolute beast but he's played eight games up to this point been a bit in and out through you know for a variety of different reasons the goal Coast form has been up and down as well pretty much all his numbers track well below what oie's doing he doesn't get his hands on the ball nearly as much and he is more of that I mean he is a key forward and that that obviously makes a big difference but given that he's a key forward you'd want to see see him hitting the scoreboard a bit more and he's not really doing that and so I think I think Jed Walter for as much as he's going to be an absolute Gem of a player over the years to come I don't think he's a factor here when it comes to the rising star and finally that leaves us with another red hot Fancy with The Bookies Kobe MCCA who again absolute jet I think this is probably the stiffest competition at this point Kobe mcer as a midfielder is but also you know can play defensively too has been tracking really really well this season so if I bring up his stats there was obviously that one game against but I believe he got injured uh in that one I can't totally recall to be honest uh we were just kind of belting him so it was all bit of a blur but this is a great player who's had some really high highs look at these last three games 32 30 and 30 disposals he's really found form he's gotten white hot in recent weeks and he's absolutely surged up the market as a result and it's just really going to be a matter of whether could sustain that North has has shown signs in recent games uh while they've while they've still been kind of comprehensively beaten in a lot of them they've they've shown signs that they could be starting to turn things turn things around that they can kind of start to work with Claro's game plan but I don't know I I'm I mean if he can sustain what we've seen in the last in his last few games but he's obviously missed a couple since then it feels like he's the walk up winner at this point in the absence of Harley R and Sam Dary but I mean he's in and out he's been in out in and out a bit he's he's had injuries and that works against you at the end of the day so let's Circle back in on olle who's tracking better than a lot of a lot of the players we've gone through here in a lot of key stats Ole Dempsey I know right now and I I took a look at some odds and those sort things beforehand he's tracking like $41 in in some different markets and you know he's considered a rank outsider I think a game like the one we've just seen against Richmond plays a big part in things changing there and I think when people go and take a look at some of the stats and talk about the things that we're talking about today they'll see a consistency here that is present with with Oly with some highs along the way a a level of consistency with Ole that has not been present through most of the other players that we've seen nominated for the rising star so far and that's to me I think that's important you may not necessarily go out and do a kobby mccure and get 30 disposals in multiple games or consecutive games even you may not have a bag of five like we were discussing before but consistency I think is the more important thing I would argue that you can you can count on this guy who's Bas you know in effect playing well is so inexperienced he was still eligible for the rising star so young in age and so inexperienced but comes out and is reliable I think that's really important cats fans neutrals if you happen to be watching today let me know what you think about all of the the players that have been nominated so far who do you think may find themselves nominated for the rest of the year cats fans if we see another cat get a debut over the course of the Season let let us know what you think about their prospects in terms of just getting the nomination in the first place usually the winner comes from the batch that's already been selected by this stage oie's in that and I think he's in it up to his eyes eyeballs especially if Harley Reed and Sam Sam Dary are gone we'll wait and see what happens there cats fans let me know what you think neutrals let me know what you think as well Ole Dempsey 2024 Rising Star sounds pretty good right check out all of our content on the Hoops crew visit the patreon thank you very much to
