Introduction G'day guys. My name is Damon O'Neill and I was the lead developer for the AFL Scores Garmin application. I thought I'd give a quick presentation overview of the app itself, some common problems people are having, and a bit of a walk through on how to install it and to use it. Let's have a quick look at what the presentation will look like. Alright, So what we're going to do first is go through how to install the app itself. After that we're going to look at how to launch the app. Then we'll have a little walk through through the app itself, and then finally we're going to have a look at configuring the settings to suit your device. And suit your team and your screen size best for you. Alright, let's get into it. How to Install the App OK, so I've opened up the Connect IQ Garmin app, which you can find at the Play Store or the App Store depending on if you're using an iOS or an Android device. And you can see here we've got the featured apps. Maybe one day AFL Score will get there. And then down the bottom here you can see the search button. So we're going to click on that search and in the search bar at the top we're going to search for AFL scores. Perfect, and ours is the first one that pops up at the top, so we're going to click on that one. And now to install, we're just simply going to click on the install button here and then it's going to ask you for permissions to send and request information to the Internet. The only reason we need to do that is so that we can get the AFL scores from online. Now you can see that it's queued and then it starts installing. I suggest having your watch close by or connected to your phone while this happens so it can go as quick as possible. Otherwise it'll just install next time it is synced. Perfect, so you can see we got the congratulations message, which is great. Just a few more things about this page. If you do want to leave a review, go to the reviews tab and you can write a review. Any feedback is appreciated. Doesn't necessarily have to be good or bad, but if you have any improvements or you just want to say thank you, that's the place to do it. We've also got this information panel. Have a quick read through here, probably before you install it, but it's got the overview of what the app is, the key features, how to use it, and what it's compatible on. And down the bottom here, you'll see in this What's new section, we've got the version and what I've been changing. So keep an eye out for that one because I'm always adding new features to the app and trying to upgrade it to make it as easy as possible to check those AFL scores. Finally, if you do have a problem with the app itself, feel free to contact me by clicking Contact Developer. And that doesn't have to be a problem, that can be a fix, that could be a suggestion, idea, anything you want. Just click on that Contact Developer button here and then flick me an email and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Perfect. So previously the hold menu to How to Launch the App start was the only option and now I've updated that to make it a bit easier for everyone depending on what device you're on. So the first and easiest way is if you are on a touchscreen device such as a Forerunner like I have here, 965, if you just click on the screen with your finger anywhere, that's going to launch into the games. The 2nd way to launch the app now is to press the start or stop button. I believe this is the most common button on Garmins, but I can't speak to all of them because Garmin have made so many watches and they don't like consistency very much. So as you can see up here, I've got a Start Stop button. I'm sure most Garmins have this. So if I click on this button and you do the same physical on your watch, that'll also get you into the same menu. Finally, we've also got Hold menu to start. Now, this is the most confusing one because some devices like the Phoenix have a physical menu button, whereas others such as this watch don't actually have a menu button. You can Google what your menu button is online. I believe the first two cases of what you should go with, but if you can't, you can Google Forerunner 955 menu button and it'll tell you online that the menu button is the up button. For some of them, it's the light button. There's a whole bunch of different configurations. I I don't know them all. If you want to go and Google your model, but I know for a fact the forerunner and a lot of models, it's either the up or the back key, but it's rarely the back key. So if I hold down the up key, that effectively is the menu button. And after holding it for a couple of seconds, we are then in the application. So that's how we actually enter the application itself. And now I'm just going to show you quickly what it looks like when the app will fail, which can happen from time to time. OK, so. As you can see we have the application which is loading. The application will load for 15 seconds and try and retrieve the AFL data and if it can't within 15 seconds it's going to throw up an error screen which we should see in just a second. There you go. So as you can see, we got the big error, screen timeout, try again later, start to try again, back to exit. So again, if we want to try again, we can click on the start button or the stop button and that will reload the process again. If it doesn't work the first time, try that again. And if that doesn't work the second time, I would exit the app and then try and launch it again. So to do that to exit the application, we just click the back button and that'll quit the application on your watch. App Walkthrough Alright, so now I'm just going to go through a quick walk through of the actual application itself and what it looks like how to interact with it, just for anyone that's confused. So the first thing to do is to launch the app and let it load. OK, you should see the top here date and the time. It just means that the app has got relevant data. If this number is old, for example, if you leave the application on your watch face itself for more than five to 10 minutes, you'll be confused and saying Oh well, why are the live scores different? That's just because you haven't refreshed the app in some time, and this is a point of confusion for a lot of people. But the app does not check the scores in real time. Unfortunately, Garmin just isn't powerful enough to handle an application like that. I tried to implement it that way, but due to the nature of the app, you're just meant to be checking it. So as you can see here, we have a list of the games for the upcoming round. These get updated as the AFL website does so as soon as the AFL website ticks over to the next rounds, so does the watch. As you can see here, we have the team names, abbreviations, so Carlton versus Port Adelaide. It'll tell you the date in your local time. So it's on the 26th of July at 7:40 PM and this applies for all the games on the round. You can just scroll through these. Great, so now that we've got this view here, if you're on a touch screen, you can click on the actual game that highlighted itself, or if you're on a physical watch that doesn't have a touch screen, you can actually press the start button on any of these games and it'll actually expand for you. And then it'll give you a bit more of an in depth overview of what the game actually will be. As you can see, we've got the title of the two teams, we've got where it's being played, we've got the two team logos, and then we've got a countdown to when the game starts similar. The AFL website itself. So if we head back, we can do that for any of the games, open them up and if we head back from this screen here, it's going to take us back to the AFL scores page. You will need to. Close the application completely for it to refresh those data results though, so you'll need to click back again and then load into the game. Configuring Settings Alright, so now just going to have a quick look at the settings themselves. So if we go into the settings here. We've got three different settings here and we've got usimple styling which is advised for small screens. Use images and pin Favourite team. I'm just quickly going to go over what the three of these do just so you can get a rough idea and it should help you out on the app to make the experience as best for you as it can. OK, so use images by default. Setting will be updated to your screen size. So if you have a smaller device and my app doesn't think that your screen can handle the images, then it's going to turn this off automatically. Turn on simple styling, otherwise it's going to use the images. So as you can see, mine's enabled because I have a screen big enough to support them. But if you want to turn those off, feel free to toggle these at any time and that'll turn the images on and off. Simple styling itself is actually just putting the games into more of a list fashion on the watch rather than image fashion, which is what the bigger screens are more suited for. Finally, we got this setting down here one of my favourites, pin Favourite team. Ifyou read through that, it'll basically tell you that it will pin your team's game at the top. No matter what, so you don't have to scroll to the bottom to see what your team's score currently is or when they're playing, it'll just always appear at the top. So I'm just going to show you how to quickly access that. You just click on it, Scroll down, select Favourite Team, and then click save. If we now go across to our watch itself and launch the application, you can now see that our team is in at the top, our favourite team being Sydney. As you can see, this game is on the 28th of July which is Sunday and it's taking precedence over all the other games, so it's a quick and easy way to check your team's score or when they're playing. Thank you for watching, hopefully this Thanks, Please Review Me video was helpful to you and you found something out. If you did enjoy the video and you enjoy the application, please leave me a review. I'd love it if you could support me. It's actually my first application I've made out of university and it's good to see the community rallying around and loving our great sport across another platform. So yeah, if you have any questions or queries, feel free to email me. I'll leave the links in the description for accessing the app. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
