I think Washington is kind of that team of Destiny uh the whole pack 12 implosion and you're kind of carrying the torch and you're changing conferences next year I feel like they're a little bit more veteran Laden team than Texas is um but again I have no feel I this is a kind of game where um you know the game could end and you could throw out just about I felt this way about a lot of Clemson games this year as well right you could literally give me any score at the end of this I'd be like yeah that sounds about right it's really hard to to get a good feel and a good figure but for me I'm feeling like it's going to be Michigan Washington for the national title but it sounds like you're almost going uh Texas Alabama rematch oh it could be and I I I still think Michigan has the edge over b i I think Michigan makes it there I think B will put up a good fight but I do like Texas the one thing Jonathan Brooks a running back he's doubtful I think to play in this game he's had 10 touchdowns this season they're going to rely heavily on Xavier worthy and others in the passing game and that could play into Washington's hands defensively they just had a hard time Washington has stopped topping good passing teams this year but they've managed to keep winning they're undefeated here they are Texas I I'm kind of like you I want to see it before I believe it with Texas it still feels like they got overcome these big games these big moments but coach Sark done a good job done there no doubt and those two games will be on New Year's Day so that's kind of nice we're getting away from that weird New Year's Eve vibe that we got a couple of times that seemed to make everything messy and uh everything will be going down on uh New Year's Day and we talked about how quick the game will go with Clemson Kentucky today these games will not go quick had a bunch of commercials in Long halftime shows see you at 1:00 in the morning and uh we'll get through with both of those so getting you ready for the Gator Bowl today tigers and wild cats this is the 10th time that Clemson will play in a Gator Bowl that is the most bowl game so any of the bowl games Clemson's played in over the years they played in more Gator bowls than any other this will be the 10th time doing that today we're fting our Focus back we did a little bit of this earlier talking about the Tigers on defense today a couple of stats that jumped out to me five defensive touchdowns for this Clemson Tigers team this year that is tied for the most ever with the 1990 Team Four interceptions and one fumble return that 1990 team had the exact same mix Four interceptions and one fumble return for a touchdown would love to see them get that record today and uh John I wanted to ask you about the new defensive ends coach Chris rump uh a move made by the Tigers as well as uh he is returning to Clemson and uh High Praise for him so far as well yeah no doubt about it Prince rum knows a thing or two about Clemson uh when he's uh been here in the past you talk about guys like Gaines Adams Ricky sa and others he has coached that have gone on to the NFL prominence and certainly you know he's got that pedigree he comes back with a lot of opportunity here to take a young gu group of defensive linemen here you talk about some of the guys on this defensive line that presumably will be here for the next couple years and take them to that next level he's been involved in the practices here for the Gator Bowl leading up to that and I think it's a great add we talked about Matt Luke on the other side it's interesting to see this team sort of building from the inside out on their coaching staff they start with the defensive coordinator West Goodwin a couple years ago they go to a new offensive coordinator and Garett Riley and now you're building in the trenches there with the new staff so I think it's really important that they get the guys they think are best obviously manky Hall great job here for many years with Chris rump obviously they're excited about this move and he's excited to be back in the mix no doubt yeah and you're bringing in a ton of experience with these two coaches as well been there done that NFL experience so so really interesting to see all right Kentucky 100th 100th in total offense and um 100 I mentioned this earlier they're dead last in the country in plays per game 56 plays per game it is a team that doesn't score a ton of points they're going to want to hold that ball just just like Clemson does today again tiger not at full strength we covered that at length a little bit earlier today but when a team is somewhat onedimensional already we saw it with Coach venables we've seen it a bunch with Coach Goodwin Tiger's usually very successful when that happens yeah no doubt about it you talk about their quarterback dein ly Clemson has faced them uh Clemson's faced liry a few times and liry said this week something wrong lines of he feels like he has some keys to this defense well part of the problem is when you look back at what Clemson's done they have sacked him eight times in three games including three in each of the last two meetings now again does that mean much not really it's a new program new system Liam Cohen the offensive coordinator for Kentucky you talk about it they want to ground and pound play to their strengths shorten the game that's the thing I think about with this offense so when you look at what Clemson's defense must do I mean obviously stopping the run first and foremost you get Deon lry in third and seven plus situations then you can tee off with some of these defensive linemen like Xavier Thomas and others and allow this young secondary I keep thinking of khil Barnes and others that can make plays on the back end that's the key early down success defensively for Clemson get that running game stifled it's a tall test with Clemson's defense probably as much as any as Kentucky has faced all year can be the one to do that I think no doubt Rich what are some of your thoughts on uh what we hope to see at least defensively today yeah I I think one of the things that we' talked about even on the Clemson side was the time of possession and you talked about just Kentucky dead last in terms of number of plays and that equates also to time of possession they're one of the worst in time of possession for you know holding the ball so as much as we talk about their rushing game and you would think that this would be a ground and pound type of team that would be able to hold on to the ball for long chunks of time they actually don't do that so when Ray Davis when he's been able to have big rushing games it's been explosive plays big 50 yard runs 60 yard runs those type of things right than being able to really control the game on the offensive side and I think that's what Clemson's going to be have to be able to do is limit those big runs from Ray Davis and Clemson has been shown they can stop big plays that bend but don't break type of mentality at times and I think that's one of the keys that here for Clemson is that again go ahead and get them off the field so your offense can be on the field for the big chunks no hand in hand too look at the South Carolina game for Clemson all their points for special teams defense so again there's a Caro effect maybe there into this game and Jonathan wh I know you'll get to him later in the show probably what a game he had against South Carolina three 40 plus yard field goals after the story that started early this season with recruiting him back into the mix so to speak been a great story but yeah defense special teams field position is everything in this game yeah and it could come down to the kicking game right two teams that don't exactly I mean I don't want to say struggle to score but uh Tigers haven't been Elite in the Red Zone this year by any means it's improved a lot in the last few weeks so it may very well come down to the kicking game which would be a nice Advantage potentially for the Tigers well hey fans we talked about it earlier we talked with Coach Brad Brownell earlier your both teams getting a little heated uh potentially talking about some fireworks between the two teams a little bit before uh things are getting going today so Clemson and Kentucky ready to get it on down in Jacksonville uh 5 and8 all time is the record Clemson has against Kentucky two- one on neutral Fields 2009 21-13 win uh Tigers over Kentucky I had to go back and think about that one Richmond uh about when they played uh in that bowl game i' totally forgotten I mean that was a long time ago 2009 but uh the fact those two teams squared off uh and and I pulled a couple of stats here that I think are interesting and I misspoke a little bit on this one early going for Clemson is going for their 13th straight season with nine or more wins that would tie for the fourth longest in history of college football if they were able to do that they're also trying to win a postseason game for the 13th consecutive season that's the one that's already the longest streak in college football history now a little bit of Advantage there because you've had some playoff games you have ACC Championship Games thr in as well but still it's a statistic that Clemson leads uh all time overall uh Richmond any numbers popping out at you today when you when you start looking at this matchup between these two teams or some of the streaks that Clemson has going well I think when you even look at it from a perspective with daos Sweeney and what he's been able to do as a head coach when you're looking at uh an opportunity for Bowl victories and knowing that he has an opportunity now to uh coach 20th bowl game in Clemson history and and also he's uh that would be the leading in ACC and also has an opportunity to tie for most wins in ACC uh that would Tai Bobby Balden so he's joining Elite company right now in in a much shorter period of time than a lot of other coaches yes and again you have more postseason games now but still you still got to go win them you do and they've been doing a ton of that John how about you anything popping off to you yeah we talked about this earlier rich and I uh Clemson versus coaches facing Clemson for the first time since 2011 Clemson's 45 and7 all time and this will be the first time Mark stops and Davos swey face off of course Clemson is two and0 against Bob Stoops uh so that's something to say in terms of the Stoops and this always fascinates me and and rich said earlier does this mean you think he's going to the NFL unequivocally no but Davos sweene in NFL stadiums all time 20 and2 his first NFL stadium game was this very Stadium you talked about it 2008 against Nebraska at EverBank Field they go back to the Stadium today so you look at all time they've had a lot of games in NFL venues they have played well in those venues and they'll play another one today but I find that one interesting against the firsttime coaches that face Clemson 45- seven since 2011 and another case in example today with Mark STS from first time facing off with a winning yeah no doubt I was at that Gator Bowl against Nebraska I was at the Gator Bowl against Virginia Tech before that were you either one of those Rich no uh and I remember my freshman year was the Gator Bowl against West Virginia but I did not uh attend that one okay so that's all right that's okay we can't make them all no we can't and we do have to look back just even the Gator Bowl and Clemson history will always be connected that was 45 years ago on this date it was Clemson versus Ohio State and the interception and Woody Hayes punch which led to Legendary head coach of Ohio State uh being removed from the position and no longer coaching after that yeah there there's so much history on this day that on the gator we got Timber Ray's going to jump on with us uh later and uh and go even even deeper come and Google he will have much more than I will yeah no absolutely and um DOD anything jumping out to you well every time it jumps out to me because I'm just trying to figure out how we continue to have these crazy stats year after year get week after week you're always coming up with something crazy I think you know the one that we really have just got to celebrate is 13 consecutive of hopefully nine wins or more like I think you know just over the last couple years and especially this season when we talk about our fans like really listening to that and appreciate what that means as a program um that's the one that you know probably doesn't stick out to as many people but it should because what a representation of what you know coach Sweeney has done with this program and you know 13 consecutive of hopefully nine or more is something to surely be a proud of yep and this is the 19th consecutive season that Clemson will be playing in a bowl game and that's also the fourth longest active streak so that goes back a long way too so just a ton of postseason success and you know there are teams that historically make it into these bowl games and into the postseason and play poorly but that's not the case for the Tigers they usually uh are playing their best at the end of the season and that usually carries over uh into the postseason and I and I fully expect that today um against this uh Kentucky team it's going to be interesting so John you were saying you were also reading that uh maybe wind is going to be a factor down there today they're talking about you go to weather.com anybody could do it but they're talking about wind gust of 10 to 20 MPH today so that's par for the course for Jacksonville they played a little golf down there you know that story Mark so again EverBank stadium right near the river there it's going to be tough sledding for kickers and punters maybe today we'll see what happens obviously I'm not a weather man I just play one on the radio yes see what happens though kicking is a big part of this game with whites and of course the Ping game as well but you never like that wind if you're a kicking you hate it so this game I mean we are teeing this up to be a one type of game this is so going to be 3835 that's exactly isn't it isn't it because we're expecting it to be yeah okay oh now the wind is going to let's go to the booth in Jacksonville former Clemson wide receiver will Sweeney joins us Merry Christmas to you will how's uh how your holidays been going well can you hear me all right sorry it was a cut a second but Merry Christmas to y'all was a great uh Christmas season had a lot of fun and excited for a great uh day here in Jacksonville a little bit windy but uh excited to be in the Gator Bowl it's a very historic bowl game and uh should be a fun one I think this comes since 10th time in it so we're excited about it yeah no doubt I was going to ask you about postseason memories you've got a lot of great ones right playing in some playoff games and things like that but uh is there a bowl game experience that you either experienced uh before you were with the program on the team or afterwards it really jumps out to you as your favorite yeah I mean we've been blessed to go to tons of bowl games uh throughout my my time here and I'd say probably the cotton bows one that stands out I mean everything they do in Dallas and just the hospitality of that bowl game they do a really fantastic job um but obviously it's always fun to rank to different bowl games and go to all them I mean he even the chees bowl was pretty fun my last year just being the and getting to go to Disney Universal all those fun things but uh really cool thing that this full season getting to go to neat places and it's a time that you really bond with your teammates and coaches hey will we uh we hear it's apparently getting spicy in the warm-ups apparently a little action happening out there talk a little bit about the emotions you know coming into this kind of game you got some guys who opted out some guys who opted in right um you got some next man up kind of things just talk a little bit about all those emotions in combination for this afternoon yeah well with Twitter and everything now I'm sure nothing can slip through the crack so I'm sure there had video of a little little spot down there but it wasn't anything serious it was just kind of more so playful uh interaction with the two teams but uh playful okay quickly Bren up couple they're all ready to go yeah but no This was um a big opportunity and just excited you know I mean capit up your season it's a big difference between eight and five and n and four and then just uh you know you know finish strong and setting up the opportunity for next year too you know you could be the first non SEC team to beat three straight SEC teams in a row if you uh win this one after be the South Carolina and as a matter of fact the last time uh you we won versus an team in a bll game we went on to be Georgia in the opener the very next year we beat LSU in the playl in and then beat Georgia in the season opener so hopefully you know we have that same fate here that' be really coolam for to do really kind of you know change the narrative and and get things going and and set the scene for a big year next year but um all in all really happy the guys that are playing and guys like Tyler Davis Xavier Thomas just you know they they've been so blessed and they're so excited and they just appreciate what Clon has done for them and they just want to finish strong and try to do everything they can to help Clon continue to exceed well real quick would love would love to hear one of your keys to the game mine is putting a stop to Ray Davis obviously yeah Ray Davis he's a strength of their offense he's over a thousand yard rushing this year and then obviously Clemson's familiar with Deon Le uh he's a talented guy kind of been up and down this year but still very capable um their deal I think a big thing is blocking their D line they're very disruptive up there and especially in the day like today unfortunately with the wind so strong you know I I we can still throw the ball but it is going to be a little bit of a factor so hopefully really get Mo on shley rolling and maybe even see Kade run the ball as well but I think handling that D line up front is going to be a big key today yeah it's really interesting uh will because we've been talking a lot about how both both teams do so well in stopping the run so who's going to be able to throw the ball better today who's going to be able to win the Special Teams battle today might really be how this thing ends up going and then now you hear about all this win playing a factor and obviously that's going to have a big impact on the kicking game but uh also is going to potentially have an impact on the passing game as well so hey let's welcome in all the you were mentioning for all these bowl games they do I got down here on the 26 but uh the team got Christmas Eve the 24th but it was a really cool thing you know when we came here in 2008 actually my dad's first number game is the permanent head coach or whatever you want to call it um it was uh we stay downtown Jacksonville at the omom hotel and that was now they had us out in AIA Island which is a really great experience really really my first time ever going there and it's a really neat town in Fernandina Beach uh practice at that high school so the Gator Bowl did a really good job and listen I mean when you have a year like this year when you're not going to make a playoff game or whatever but you still go and you win games you have a solid respectable campaign it's kind of fun to be like all right what bow game are we going to go to if it's not a playoff game and you want to end up in one like this you know the Gator Bowl I think it's the sixth oldest bowl of all time I think is actually the most common team has ever played in this game in game B history this is with it being our 10th time so it's just a really really cool bowl game a lot of tradition and it mean a lot to bring that trophy back to Clemson and kind of avenge that 2008 loss against Nebraska in mam Su well will thanks so much again uh just personally for me and from the team here uh back in Greenville man it's meant a lot for you to hang out with us in person for the last two seasons uh and also joining us from the booth from all the games uh this year and getting to know you and your family a little are loading up at Eng Les for game day also Clemson says all players who are listed on its depth chart coming into the Gator Bowl are available so no surprises here before the game today all right I reached out to uh Tim Beret a little bit earlier this week and said hey there's a lot of history with the Gator Bowl and the tigers being in the Gator Bowl I'd love for you to jump on and talk with us about it so it is an honor as always to be joined right now by Mr Kim Beret Tim how was your Christmas and how are you doing everything was great yes great to be uh great to be with you and looking forward to this game today so I saw a couple of stats and we'll just start with those it's the 10th Gator Bowl appearance for the Tigers that's the most that is the bowl game they've appeared in the most over the years and it's also the 50th alltime Bowl appearance for the Tigers so I just asked will Sweeney what his favorite Bowl was do you have a favorite bowl that you've covered over the years years with the Clemson Tigers well the favorite Bowl overall would be the 2016 national championship game but couldn't have been more exciting with Hunter rro uh catching the uh the winning touchdown with one second left but I got to tell you one of the more exciting over my career was a game I was not present for and that was the 1978 Gator Bowl which was on this exact date in 1978 of course the Tigers 17 to 15 I was actually with Jim Phyllis broadcasting a Clemson versus Texas Tech basketball game in El Paso because in those days believe it or not your radio network could not broadcast the bowl game all the bowls sold the individual rights the national uh radio network so so Jim wasn't even at the game either so we're broadcasting the this Texas Tech game which comes down to a buzzer shot by Derek Johnson by the way and during the commercial before that last play of the basketball game the producer uh says it into our earphones he hit him he hit him and we're thinking what in the world is he talking about and obviously he was talking about what he a hitting Charlie Balman after he intercepted the uh that pass and that was a great picture for clenon Brock the the tiger program a lot of national respect uh and among the coaches too one quick story uh three days after that game of Alabama was playing Penn State for the national championship and my good friend Al Adams was at Danny Ford's house watching the game and 20 minutes before the game his phone RS and believe it or not on the other end was fair Bryant 20 minutes before kick off of this national championship game and he was calling to tell him how proud he was that he just told the Alabama team that if they played as hard as cson did against Ohio State they would win this game and he wanted Danny Ford as young uh Proto to to hear that and of course Alabama absolutely fantastic Tim ber is joining us a long time sports information director for Clemson Athletics and Tim Richmond Weaver here and so you talk about you were on assignment during a basketball game for that Gator Bowl how many times have the Tigers played football game in a bowl game and also had a basketball game the same day oh gosh you have to know that actually I did look this knew it so um 11 times let's see 1 2 3 four 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 this is the 13th time Clon has played a football game and a basketball game on the same day uh but only twice has Clon won a bowl game and won a basketball game on the same day 45 years ago today than what we just talked about Ohio state 17 to 15 the gator B won that Texas Tech game that I talked about and then just seven years ago the Tigers beat Ohio State on New Year's Eve 2016 in the playoff game and also beat Wake Forest earlier in the day by Five Points up in Winston Salem so today hopefully could be the third overall there have been six times Clemson has won a basketball game and a football game on the same day but obviously those other four regular season games football games great stuff as always Tim I know you yeah I think we got all that again unstable we uh we knew this coming in hey uh Tim man thanks for jumping on with us wish we had a little bit more time with doing this for years I should know better it when you bring it you bring it so let's talk about the tigers are wearing today well the Tigers are in orange britches today they're doing white on Orange and Kentucky is in all blue I think all the way to the helmet is going to be blue um but we know as tiger fans what the orange britches mean and so we when we joke about you know what's happening in warm-ups and the kind of energy and and and the playful pillow fights that are happening out there we we know what comes with the orange brides and I think that's probably a part of where that energy is coming from and what that means for this program when you bring those out yeah obviously it's Championship season right you're you're playing for a trophy at this point today to win the the Gator Bowl trophy so so some good stuff so we're closing in that kickoff again right around 1204 today uh what's on your mind Richmond that we haven't covered off on yet in today's show yeah I did talk about it earlier just in terms of yeah Clemson's going to want to lean on the running game just like Kentucky is going to want to lean on the running game but which quarterback is going to be able to come out there and make some key plays and I think that's part of it for both teams but especially for Clemson with Kade kumnick and we've seen him at home have really good games 65% completion percentage 14 TDS three interceptions and four rushing TDS yes at home but on the road that's where he struggled a little bit just over 60% completion percentage but five TDS and five interceptions and zero rushing TDS on the road and I think as much as we talk about Clemson rushing attack with Bill MAA and will Shipley Kate kumnick he has to be able to make some of those key plays also with his legs I think that can be a part of it and obviously being able to protect the ball and not try to make the big play with some uh mistakes in the passing game maybe throwing an interception just manage the game from that perspective I think that's some really good points and I think this is a really important uh game for CAD right everybody talking about him kind of taking the next step and we've seen a lot of flashes in The Undefeated November you started see him turn the corner a little bit and avoid some of those turnovers and John you're nodding your head as well and you had mentioned this earlier um I I think this really could set the table for a big year for Kade Club Nick next season if he could come out and show out today I think it's important as Rick said you know on a neutral site or away from home kade's uh best games have not quite been there and you got to start showing it away from home the ability to elevate your guys and again you're looking at a receiving cor with Tyler Brown Antonio Williams trus Stato Adam Randall so lean on the running game a little a little bit if you can I think you got a challenge this front of Kentucky and if you can you know somehow break through and get some nice big runs early there and and sort of diminish their confidence a little bit another thing with Clemson they're a top 10 team in starting field position this year so with all the turnovers they have a good field position game it's critical as we talk about Murphy's Law hey it'll probably be 3835 you know we're talking about defense slow moving game but field position is key and Clemson's doing a good job this year of at least starting on the plus side of the 30 of their own territory story though so again keep that up limit the turnovers in critical situations and uh it should be a win for Clemson I'd imagine yeah a healthy wide receiving core has been something that Kade hasn't had all year and again not making excuses right but you lose Cole Turner who was expected to be the show out very early in the season uh Antonio Williams only playing four games this year I mean those are your top two uh receivers coming into the year or two of the top three now Bo Collins has gone and and he was banged up at time so it's been a really weird year and again you've got your guys that are all coming back next year uh in the wide receiving core you've got some studs coming in in the recruiting class so again I think this is a really big game for Kade today second year in the offense as well next year for Kate Garett Riley I think the first year you're going to have those roadblocks and those bumps in the road but I think year two will be much smoother yeah might there might not have been enough talk about Garrett Riley taking over as offensive coordinator so there is that change also for Kate Club Nick so a lot of factors went into how the season played out from his performance side yeah very good point there as well well coming thoughts on today's matchup I feel like I've talked about this all show but field positions going to be really important um on both sides of the ball obviously solid fundamental execution I think this comes back to that emotion and all that just be solid and fundamental execute at your position and and your responsibility limit turnovers dominate in the Red Zone like let score in the red zone and limit Devin ly in the Red Zone he's got uh really good stats when it comes to finishing in the red zone and we've got a limit that let's hold them to no scores when they get down to the Red Zone oh hopefully we don't even get there let's let's do that like that that's right explosive play I I do agree with you Clemson we have seen has struggled in the Red Zone have to capitalize awful in the beginning of the season I think we were worse in the country like five weeks into the for a period of time there was yes and obviously you've been able to kick some field goals but you got to score touchdowns you do and I think that's a a big part of it so can Clemson do that and then also Clemson defensively just holds Kentucky under 24 points 80 for the Tigers when they hold an opponent under 24 points this Seas it's easy and it also can't uh we can't overlook if you recall DOA calling for no turnovers anymore that sted the big November run do you remember that you got up on your soap box you had like the three T's or something or L's no more turnovers I declare it you declared it on air don't mess it now Ming it speak it into exist I love it yeah no it's all good John what are some of your final thoughts yeah I think there three names that come to mind Shipley mafa and then Tyler Brown you want the power in the running game and the explosive plays in the passing game get you some of that and then Antonio Williams in the slot could have him back we'll see if he's explosive enough to be able to provide some of those quick screen passes and then Jake Brennan still the tight end let's see in the Red Zone if that can be a threat as well haven't talked about him all show but obviously Club Mick is key here and then on defense we know the story shut down the Run let ly uh be the one to beat you that's the best way to be Kentucky yeah and again if you're just joining us some high winds down there they're thinking could have an impact on the kicking game today and the passing game is as well I feel like Tiger's going to show out defensively today even down all of the players uh that they're missing uh from all of the opt outs and things like that and some injuries that really have that secondary knockdown but I think a couple of big turnovers uh early game are going to be big for the Tigers and I'm hoping they roll today it really feels like it'll be a nice way to half of the of the Season took it through November did it undefeated come to a bowl game trying to get to their ninth win of the year against a very good Kentucky ball Club they comes into this one Tim this is this is a game and a matchup two teams that offensively and defensively on paper at least look extraordinarily similar yeah especially when you look at Rushing defense ky's 26 in the country and rushing defense Clemson's 27th they're only three yards uh separated the one area where Clemson does have an advantage will be interesting to follow is is on third down and Kentucky was allowed 44% on third down conversions uh this year 113th in the nation out of 133 teams so hopefully the Tigers can uh can get some conversions going on third down Reggie uh you know you've been around coach sweee enough to know this is a game and he talked about this with a team I can't tell you how many times as I was watching practice is getting ready for the bowl game lines of scrimmage offensive and defensive side of of this are going to determine who wins this game for both teams yeah and like Tim saying both of these teams are identical and you look at uh the biggest I guess uh difference is Kentucky has a thousand yard rusher and they're running back he's ranked number 32 in the country but yeah as you talk about offensive touchdowns you know total offense these teams are back and back with each other with 45 touchdowns a piece I think Clemson is ranked uh uh 55 in the country and UK is ranked 56 so again very similar matchups very similar teams but again that offensive line for Kentucky size they probably average 6'4 across the board probably 330 and uh it's going to be a big game for that defensive front and that defense you got to feel the gaps safety's got to come up and fill the holes too so it's going to be exciting uh day today for that Clemson defense to get after it you know but I would say this as far as a running game is concerned and Tim's looking down nobody's going to say combine mafa and Shipley 1600 yards rushing between the two all right so it's about 150 yards per game Ray Davis is a leading ball carrier for Kentucky with 186 carries the next closest guy is Raymond Jefferson actually mlan with 26 26 carries yeah that's a big gap Deon Le obviously quarterback has 39 but you know 20 of those are sacked yeah 20 of those have been sacked so you just don't count that from that standpoint but looking forward to what should be a good one here in Jacksonville here today in the Gator Bowl we're going to take a break when we thinking about though the athletic calendar here in 2024 it's going to turn around really quick obviously basketballs are still going on gymnastics s right around the corner really excited about their first meet coming up here in January I hate to tell you this softball and baseball are like 40 days away I mean it's incredible lacrosse new lacrosse stadium that we have up there so and and I get asked that question a lot like gosh fall must be and fall is busy and obviously football kind of consumes a lot of things and and weekend travel and such but just from a volume of events at least for me and a lot of our you know administrative staff spring you know because you got a bunch of softball and baseball games as you said and tennes are playing lacrosse now so just like there's a lot more act let alone spring practice and game you know that's always always a big thing as we know so um and now as we've expanded sports with lacrosse last year gymnastics that's going from 19 to 21 Sports and those two sports are are sure enough just from like a a community sales marketing promotion and so um feel really comprehensive in our offerings just without the community throughout the community let alone um how we're competing to your point so it's just been an awesome awesome fall and a lot of a lot of Mojo heading into the winter and spring in the way that that our fan base supports Clemson women's Athletics just all you got to do is look at ticket sales because we're it seems like every sport that has ticket sales is in the top five in the country I'm telling you with and even gymnastics right we haven't even had we've had one exhibition match and and we have our first one January 12th Friday and as we went on sale with those this summer and just like the interest and the the the sales that we saw I was like guys like how how is this compare you know because gymnastics college gymnastics has really grown there's a lot of interest coming off you know Olympic um interest and it's just like a really growing awesome sport so I was like hey let's get help me understand nationally kind of where so now we're top it's like sixth fifth or sixth in the country for ticket sales for season tickets for gymnastics haven't even had a had a match yet so just great support and Don as we're looking out here like there's a whole lot more orange than blue in here right now and so like it just comes down to you know Clemson family ipte and just our folks interest across the board let alone time and discretionary dollar certainly not lost on us how we um make available but than just the interest and passion for more folks it's just really different well one thing that you do not need to worry about is the Clemson brand is strong and it's going to remain strong well um I I won't take the bait there maybe but uh there is a lot going on in college athletics Don no question within the ACC and otherwise um I know I've been consistent in saying hey we're going to keep looking doing what's best for Clemson and being very connected and well read in the industry so I I'll say to that script um but it is it is very active um right now I I expect 2024 for that to to this game against Kentucky going to the Gator Bowl where you coached your first bowl game and then your first Bowl win was against Kentucky the next year yeah uh so hopefully we can combine those things in this one that'll be a great finish to this season excited about it you know my first bowl game as a coach was in 93 as a ga at the Gator Bowl and then obviously as a head coach so uh definitely come in Full Circle and and U you know proud of how the guys are prepared proud of how they finished you know to be where we were to to earn our way into the Gator Bowl uh you know is a is a great accomplishment uh by this team and you know I'm proud of the preparation that we've had and you know these guys are focus and and want to finish with a win and you know continue to you know have good momentum going into the postseason talk a little bit about uh this four game winning streak to to end the season um outstanding performances on both sides of the ball two wins over top 20 teams in that in that stretch and four really good quarterbacks I mean we've seen some really really good quarterbacks and we've probably had uh in this four game streak probably the least available Personnel we've had you know guys out and kind of in in and out of the lineup and and uh just just proud to have the team but the the biggest thing is we we've won the turnover marging in all four games and that has been the the difference in winning and losing for this team this year uh so I'm really proud of how they turned that around defensively man I think we've been a really good group all year long outside of a play here or there they they've consistently U gotten better and these these these four games they they've been taking the ball away they've been scoring on defense and then offensively we we've been better at protecting it not perfect but we've been winning the turnover margin and and that's been the difference and then the last game that we played to see Jonathan whes have the game that he had and make three big kicks and you know the way Aiden Swanson has punted the ball you know we really all three phases have made really good contributions uh and that's been the difference for us and you know so they're all excited to play um you know we got a we got a uh some great leadership on this team and and um those guys have done a really good job leading through this bowl prep and you know we'll be excited to get down there and and uh find a way to win this one so uh how's the preparation been for the bowl game and how many practices have you been able to uh to get in it looks like you're pretty healthy yeah it's been a you know crazy time this is you know all the scoring on in college football obviously we had a couple coaching changes we got recruiting you got mid years uh there there's got finals I mean there's a lot to to balance but you know we will end up you know having 12 practices and um you know with the timing of our game and and all that we had to kind of balance and so that's that's it's been really good you know you spend a lot of time obviously getting ready for the opponent but you you you often you spend a lot of time on yourself you spend a lot of time on Clemson and getting back to some of the basics and then this is really part of my favorite time of the year just because you get to really you have time and you have time to really coach the young guys you're not constrained on a on a you know 20 hour rule and all these things so you know we can get the varsity guys kind of out of the way and really just coach these young players and and you know have two or three scrimmages with them and you know it's it's just great opportunity for you to develop your team to evaluate your team a lot of those guys to to create some momentum for themselves as they go into uh you know preparation for the spring I was about to say I've been here a long time and seen a lot of these JV practices during the Bulls kids who have red shirted that really benefited from from this time and given them momentum the next year yeah no doubt about it and just gaining confidence you know they spend once you get into the season you get into your 20 hour rule it's just you you know you only have you have very little time and and uh so we try to keep these guys engaged as much as we can and it is good that some of them get to play a couple games to still be red shirted uh but to really just kind of get everybody out of the way and and they get all the emphasis and the focus it just kind of ramps the intensity up um and and I I mean it's fun it's fun to watch because you can really tell who's who's really put the work in you know throughout the season when nobody's kind of been watching you know from a mental standpoint you see them physically growing but but you know they've got to do a little extra on their own mentally uh to keep up as the season progresses so it's a it's a great opportunity it's a great time and you know it's one of the one of the benefits of being able to play in the postseason one player I know Clemson fans are excited to see we haven't seen in a while is Antonio Williams I know he's been back in practice and open to play in this game yeah we're hopeful you know he's he's played about three and a half games this year and and uh obviously Cole's been out since game one um he's played one game maybe a quarter or so but uh it's U those are two may maybe two of our the two maybe our two best receivers and they've been out all year and now the positive of that is other guys have had a chance to step up and develop obviously Tyler Brown and scato Adam is starting to kind of catch his rhythm and uh so you know we'll see I mean we're hopeful uh it' be a great way for him to finish the year you know coming off a tough year for him from an injury standpoint and um you know kind of get back to to uh playing some ball and again having some confidence going into the spring we'll be back for over the course of the season one that particular jumps out to is their victory over Louisville yeah I mean this is a team that Prides himself on being physically tough that's the biggest thing I would say you know they take on the personality of Coach Cups he's a longtime defensive guy you know he's got that mindset and you see that in their team they're built you know through running the football their running back is is letting sec in touchdowns not any easy do and and I think he was second and receiving yards for a running back so Dynamic player we know lry well a very experienced guy he's got good receivers big guys up front again they're built that way the same thing on the defensive side really really big and thick and strong up front uh downhill linebackers good good secondary I think most everybody's playing in this game you know for them so uh definitely a team we got a lot of respect for as far as how they play and then to see them at the end you know find a way to win them really tough game against loville in a in a rivalry game uh and they won it at the very end they broke a long run uh to seal the game so uh this a team that's coming off a big win with some confidence and but so are we uh so obviously two teams that are going to want to finish their season on a high note and you know we're going to have to play well and and uh make sure that we're the most physical team on the field that's where it's going to start but you prepare for this game do you uh don't even look at uh footage from when he played at NC State or is it all just this year yeah just just Kentucky you know you just you know prepare for for what they do schematically but he's a good player I mean you know he's different from the last four he's not quite the runner uh that those other guys have been but you know you give him time he can make the throws uh he really can so we've got a we got to win that matchup again you you don't win in the postseason if you don't win in the trenches you just don't and that you know that's that's where it starts and then you know it's it's usually turnovers or or Red Zone opportunities uh you can go back to last year and look at our situation with uh all the missed opportunities in the red zone and um uh but you in the turnovers you gota you gota you got to do those things but it starts with with winning that match up up front and for us we gota we can't let him sit in the pocket you know we've got to win the matchups uh one-on-one when they create themselves we got to move the pocket we got to get him off the spot we got to disrupt their timing um and uh and turn him over you know I think he hasn't thrown a lot of interceptions but he has shown you know where if you get some pressure on him he will put the ball up he will put it up he trusts his guys and and uh the way our guys have played on the back end you know we hopefully we can uh you know come down with it he has a balanced receiving cord to throw to four different guys at least 29 catch Four Guys between 350 and 500 yards receiving yeah I think I think the number nine I think he might be the one guy not playing uh but they've got you know six seven 85 you know they got some guys that can really really run uh so it's a you know number three he another guy I mean they got a good group and he has the ball has been distributed very very well uh it's all you know they'll do a lot of under center it's it's all kind of through the the Run game and the play action and some boots and some shots you know the honestly the South Carolina game um they missed you know three wide open TouchDown opportunities just missed them uh so you got to give to Carolina a bit of credit because they they they disrupted the timing but but the plays were there and they just weren't qu didn't quite connect and so we've got to be able to to hopefully create that destruction as well to keep not give up the explosive big play and if you look at the Louisville game same thing the game ended on a 60 yard explosive play touchdown so I think that's a critical thing making them have to go the distance uh us winning the match up up front turning them over and then offensively you know being efficient uh let's be efficient let's take what's there they've been a defense that's kind of a Bend don't break type of a velocity keep everything in front of you so we got to play with rhythm we got to get yards after the catch uh we've got to be able to get our back to the second and third level and uh so I'm excited to see them go competing in got to play smart and he's got to continue to do what we've seen these last couple games he's he's he's really settled in into the pocket he's using his legs much more effectively um you know than maybe he did the early part of the year I know one of the motivating factors is you really want to keep that uh post game winning uh winning at least one post game uh goes back to 2011 which is amazing yeah so 12 consecutive years with a postseason win which is already a college football record um no Bud's there's been a lot of people with postseason wins but not 12 consecutive and you know to put that in perspective I think Alabama's had nine and so you that's something we've taken a lot of pride of I mean to win a postseason game that means you're that means you're in a bowl game that means you're in a championship game that means you're in a playoff game and and and obviously we've been on big stages and and to have a street like that it just shows that you know um how we get ready for these type of games has been very effective I think we're eight three in our last 11 bowl games uh so it'd be great to push that to nine and three and get a nin in and and then certainly a 13th year in a row with a postseason win um I think that would be a great accomplishment and one of those rare things that that U has happened over the last decade plus that kind of makes makes us unique coach good luck receivers have been really just ineffective no catches for Tyler Brown so far three for 17 for Rand two for 17 solot it's been brinning stool or nobody what what do you see that maybe they can clean up a little bit in the second half to be more potent down the field yeah I mean Kentucky they really are dropping four guys really deep and stuff but at the same time you know definitely need to force the issue a little bit going to have to find uh a one-on-one shot somewhere down there and give someone a chance or at least draw a pi um did have a nice dig route or crossing route earlier to solado the 15 yard and besides that not a ton going there um and like I said I mean kage's completing the ball 72% but it's just to the explosiveness you know you got to get yards you got to get going down the field and then on defense um you know got two got some freshman Corners out there young guys and uh I know Lewis had a kind of a tough Pi there which wasn't good and then also got to do a better job helping in the Run game is kind of helped Kentucky have these two plus Downs they got so really got to clean that up overall they've done pretty well in the Run game you know Ray Davis it says 6 for 47 but he had the 43 yd run besides that he's got five for four so uh doing a good job stopping the Run um just gota you know eliminate the big plays and then Clinton got to get the big plays and that's the difference that's why kck's up four points they've out big played us this half yeah for sure I mean kck's got 183 yards they've got 150 on four plays the 58 yd pass to key they got all the way down to the five that resulted in the immediate touchdown you had the the catch and run by Brown over there the Davis run for 43 and then the brown end round for a touchdown that's 150 of their 183 yards you're right I mean in the you know and I I don't want to I don't want to play uh revisionist history here but the tigers are done a pretty good job in the other plays and and you know what uh we heard in the pregame interview Tim and dbo talked about it that you've got to limit big place if our tigers have not done a good enough job doing this that's right I mean that's what it comes going to come down to who's going to go break the tackle who's going to go make the jump ball catch who's going to go do those things and give us a chance to win this half and hopefully you know BR
