it was supposed to be installed today and everything was under thegr and now it's all ruined Jason Brown has been waiting nearly a month for his new kitchen to be installed and now will likely have to go another four to 6 weeks without being able to cook on Saturday his garage flooded and his family was unable to keep up with the pace of the water coming in the system they have it goes to the creek and when it goes to the creek and the creek is so high the water won't go out it just surges back so everything comes up the drain and there's no stopping there's nothing you can do it's a feeling of helplessness that brown has experienced for 30 years his home backs on to the cooksville creek there was however plenty of help elsewhere in Miss Saga we've done everything that we could we had hundreds of First Responders police uh fire ambulance uh even our Recreation workers went out to go lend a hand help evacuate people where they needed to be evacuated we've had neighbors um we've done to clean up as quickly as we could miss Saga fire and Emergency Services performed 27 water rescues over the weekend and eight elevator rescues several people including children were trapped in the Dixie and Dundas area which is one of the municipalities vulnerable spots we know that there is a point within the little uh Little toico Creek Water course that has a tensity to spill over when we have that uh it's not just a large volume of rain but it's the volume of rain in a short amount of time span because the system doesn't have the capacity to handle that volume rainfall amounts varied across the city with some areas seeing as little as 6 Mill mm others as high as 170 it marks the second time in as many months the city has felt the wrath of a one in 100e storm they're no longer one in 100-year events and I think what we're seeing is we're seeing climate change and the impacts of clim climate change so we're seeing uh these type of rainfall events happening more often since the introduction of a storm water charge in 2016 the city has invested over $230 million to improve its storm water system and says future Investments will be made taking into account the frequency of these intense storms to help residents like Jason Brown well there's one program that helps people um buy a sump pump there's another one that uh you can apply for to sort of say these were the damages that uh that happened uh and if you qualify uh like say your own assistance uh then we'll help you with some of those fees the city says it's too early to estimate the total value of damage caused by the weekend storm Dale manuck CBC News Miss Saga
