SMU QB Preston Stone previews matchup vs. BYU, how Mustangs can start fast offensively

well what have you seen from BYU on film so far uh yeah they're um they're a really good team they um they beat up on SIU pretty good last week um you know I remember playing them two years ago that was one of the most competitive games since I've been here um it came down to the wire so um you know they're really good football team um defense plays very disciplined they don't beat themselves um so I think it's going to come down to us just being consistent out disappointing them and doing our jobs what kind of stood out on film from Houston Christian kind of opposed to what the off is do against what kind of take from that um I mean we ran for almost 400 yards so anytime you do that that definitely stands out um I think it that was spread out between three guys which was really really impressive um from our backs and uh from our o line um I think we also had like 10 guys that got catches too so you know that's that's football that's what we were able to do last year where um you know our offense is centered around one or two people alone we've got a whole um a whole arsenal of people that can H you was it kind of like seeing that for the first time this year you said that was kind of the calling part last year now that you know new team up some tons of returners what do it like see first time really menes like that yeah I think I think it's just a testament to our culture that we have um you know there there's plenty of guys um on our team skill guys especially on the offense that could go and be a number one number two guy at other programs across the country but um you know it says a lot about the guys that we have um in that we can spread the ball around and egos won't get in the way so um NE go from the running backs tight ends receivers um we've got we've got a really good culture and I think that's going to that's going to take us into the championship rounds was it like for you to watch what the defense did on Saturday particularly big tank has made games that was awesome tank got a touchdown that was really cool uh no I I think that's uh again that's also SMU football you guys saw what they were able to do last year you know they were um they they kept us in every single game that we played last year um whether we were clicking or if we were stalling our defense kept us in the game every year and um that just gave me allowed me to kind of reminisce on 2023 and I got to you get to see that again so that was really cool obviously different opponent but did you feel like you guys took a pretty big step forward from you know the week Zero game to to the second game of the season I think so um you know we uh definitely from an offensive standpoint I mean defense was lights out they you know seven points across four quarters was pretty ridiculous um uh yeah I think I think we took a big step for sure uh you know we stalled out on the first drive I missed a couple throws um and then it was Bang Bang Bang from there so um you know we took a big jump but I think there's still a lot of room for myself and for um us as a unit to improve what's the key for a fast start for you guys offensively and and how did you you know make that happen we definitely staying ahead of the chains um um you know we can't we can't beat ourselves with penalties um whether pre- snap or post Snap um you know making sure that we're clicking with our game plan going into that first drive um um and then you know it's guys making plays um you know I think you'll see like once you get into like the end of the half you know end of the game that's really when guys got to kind of step up and do what RJ Maryland did in the fourth quarter against Nevada right but especially when you're coming out in the start like the first the second drive you know we we have a good idea of what we're doing going into those first few drives so it's just can we repeat both down practice all week and stay consistent what is it like sharing back field with Rashard you know obviously a veteran guy but still getting new sty back position what is he kind of hum team so far what are your communication yeah he's a he's a spark plug and he's a you he's a very Smiley fun guy to be around um which is which is a lot of fun like in practice and in games um it's funny because you know he's it's like he doesn't take himself too seriously but he's also you know the best player on the field every time he's on the field you know so that's really cool cool um and then he's a you know LJ rooster zann you know when they get the game there's there's no drop out for all those guys can go too um but uh Bard's really Dynamic you know um he can make those lightning Cuts he can beat you around the corner but it's also fine to see when he when he lowers his shoulder and runs through people so he can do it all you L your shoulder for BL for him during the game yeah just ready to go for that I wanted to yeah I wanted uh um you know you can't you can't do the crackback anymore but um so honestly I wanted to do that but uh that that's against the rules and I probably wouldn't be playing this week if I did that so um a lot gets made from the outside about you know 10 straight power conference games and you know your guys' recent history against teams from Power conferences is that something you guys think about or is talked about or is it just the the next one on the schedule yeah I mean really not until someone brings it up um you know it was coach Ashley did have a really cool part to share with us this week that this is you know the most anticipated schedule that this school has had in like five decades and when I heard that that that really put put our schedule into perspective and made me appreciate um these next games that we have but um you know once you're in the moment once the ball is snapped it's just another team regardless of who you're playing so um um I think you you know you guys have seen um these first you know week zero and week one of college football that anybody can be anybody you know it's a game regardless of who you play so um we definitely don't make out our opponent to be anything bigger than it is or anything smaller than that team is we just going to go play and kind of with that coach talked about it yesterday but what's it like watching some of your new conference mates play and and kind of get a a early look at at what ACC football's about oh like the other teams yeah um yeah that's um let's see to be honest I haven't watched too many other games um I watched a little bit of BC and FSU on Monday um you know that BC is obviously a really good team you they've got a really good quarterback he's fun to watch um I saw Georgia Tech play FSU um Clemson Georgia so I mean you know you um you know we we've got a really really good conference you know with a lot of really good teams I think a lot of really good offenses in particular so um you know it'll be fun to uh have maybe a couple more shootouts than we're used to this year but at the same time our defense is going to step up against whoever play
