currently sitting really nice 18% under that 10-year average as we're headed here through the middle of June so pretty good place to be the water we received during the winter time the capacity in the reservoirs is peing in our use we're actually doing okay now the trick is don't waste the water we've got to have a watered Steward stewardship type of attitude even in good years so it's nice to have the available water but we definitely don't need to waste it and uh looks like we're doing a good job we just need to keep it going through the summer months that's dry out there this morning let's see what the roads look like with First Look traffic and say good morning to Andy Farnsworth about what you'd expect from what we've been seeing uh early this summer with road work going on on I80 coming over from TOA and Lane restrictions on I80 in parley's kyya in fact right now westbound 80 just before the mouth of the canyon a little bit slow and there's a crash on southbound I15 over to similar law in Kentucky but now if challenged this Louisiana law will go before a more conservative Supreme Court the ACLU and other groups are vowing to challenge the law citing the separation of church and state new tension between the White House and Israel we get the details from ABC's mwin prime minister Netanyahu accusing the US of withholding weapons from Israel give us the tools and use in densely populated areas of Gaza Netanyahu did not elaborate on what weapons were being withheld Real Salt Lake made team history last night can you believe them Tim they're just on a roll they extended their unbeaten streak to 15 games real took down sport in Kansas City 4 to3 this is the second longest unbeaten streak in a single MLS season have you watched any of these games recently not not recently oh my gosh uh as a team just the passes and the confidence that they are having as team teammates is fun to watch and some amazing goals by Chicho along that stretch of 15 games today by the way is also the summer solstice also known as the first official day of summer this year summer solstice arrives earlier than it has in 228 years when George Washington was President usually the know there's no more important service that we can provide and I find it critically important to get more details to the audience as quickly as possible there's nothing more energizing than that for me me not at all the most important thing we do is breaking news I am gratified that so many people listen to me every afternoon on KSL but what they don't know is that there are so many people behind the scenes making it happen checking on the traffic answering the phones making the calls talking to the newsmakers they're out in the street into the field to get the raw information and then putting it all together so that I can sit in front of a microphone and be a source of information every afternoon there are so many people who make it happen that's what you don't know ride home with Jeff Kaplan weekdays 3 to 7 on KSL News radio KSL News time 5:15 the three things you need to know this hour first Utah Democrats are condemning the legislator's ban of portions of Title 9 for Trans people granted by the US Constitution they cite the time and money which will be spent fighting the new state law in the courts I'm KS news radio's Heather Kelly second this afternoon we hit the summer Soul state it's the day with the most sunlight of the year and it is the official start of summer third it's traffic and weather together Lane restrictions westbound 80 coming to the mouth of the canyon causing a little bit of slowdowns right now Lane restrictions over by the airport and 5600 West aren't that's good South 15 though crash on the right shoulder in Sandy I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center we'll jump another 10 degrees today putting us at 90 mostly sunny I'm Matt Johnson and right now 63° at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios lots of heat and now lots of rain in some places because of our first name storm of the Season let's check in with ABC news from ABC News I'm Sherry Preston as the heat Bears down on the northeast and wildfires continue to rage in the west those along the Gulf Coast are getting battered by a tropical storm in Texas the state of Louisiana now requiring every public school classroom to display a copy of the Ten Commandments if you want to respect the rule of law you got to start from the original lawgiver which was Moses that's right amen that's Governor Jeff Landry the ACLU says it will sue the Supreme Court struck down a similar law in Kentucky Back In 1980 this is of course a very different Supreme Court and this morning the court will hand out some more opinions as ABC Steven pornoy reports some could be big ones the Court's term is scheduled to end in a week key questions we still expect the justices to answer include these whether City's efforts to ban homeless encampments violate the constitution whether hospitals in states where abortion is banned must provide the procedure in emergencies whether alleged domestic abusers can have their guns taken away and what's perhaps the most watched case of the term whether Donald Trump enjoys absolute immunity for his official acts leading up to January 6th Steven portnoi ABC News Washington Russian President Vladimir Putin moving on from the mutual Aid agreement that he signed with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to sign another agreement with Vietnam that one as Russia seeks to strengthen ties in Southeast Asia now Futures up 27 you're listening to ABC News elberto the first name storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is already impacting the Gulf of Mexico this morning ABC News correspondent Jim Ryan joins us live from Texas tell us more about this storm Jim it's a big one it's it's a large storm it never did make hurricane status didn't even come to close to that but tropical storm Alberto in the last 12 hours or so has been lashing the Texas Coast with high winds Heavy Rain flooding in that part of the state even a few tornadoes spun off from that storm this morning the National Hurricane Center has not yet confirmed that the storm has made landfall that will happen down around tempico Mexico which is 200 mil Northeast of Mexico City but still the Alberto if you look at a radar radar image takes up a large chunk of the Southwest Gulf of Mexico yeah you watch this thing and we were just watching the map as it heads across Mexico but Texas is kind of on the what we've learned is the dirty side of this storm it is H consider that these storms as you're looking down at the map they rotate counterclockwise and so everything on the north side of a storm like this is getting the raw force of the Wind and The rain that's coming in off the Gulf of Mexico on the other end the on the you know the west side and the South Side you're getting the wind that's been degraded by the land itself as it's uh moving across so yeah Texas is is getting a huge chunk of this from Corpus Christie down on the southern tip of Texas all the way up to Galveston which is 400 miles away so a large storm this is one of the later storms to become the first in any given season January or June 20th is is you know the average for when they strike but we've been seeing tropical storms coming in much earlier than this in the last 10 years or so I worry about the people who I mean these towns are familiar to us even if we're not familiar with Texas the name Corpus Christie or South Padre Island or Brownsville we know these names because they get it seems like anyway they get hit so often well they do and you know even even if it's not a full-blown hurricane they get flooding and if it's not flooding it's drought and if it's not drought it's some disturbance along the Rio Grand but this is one that's capturing the attention of a lot of the state the governor has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties extending from out on the shoreline all the way west across the R Grand Valley how long is this expected to impact Texas probably for another day or so don't look now though there's another disturbance down on the Bay of campee down around off the coast of Honduras and Honduras and expected to move up into the Gulf of Mexico that could become tropical storm Barrel b r y l if it gains some strength as that happens over the next week or so Tim I always get to kick out of the names for these stores we're working our way through the alphabet here so it's Alberto a and then the next one b and we'll hopefully not get to De and F but oh we will we will yeah all right Jim years of course we ran out of letters you know and they started had to I remember that yeah crazy crazy all right Jim be safe down there ABC News corespondent Jim Ryan in Dallas this morning on our in-depth at 15-45 let's get a look now at traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents per gallon and back to you Andy Amanda travel on i-15s off to a good start heading from Draper to downtown but there's a southbound crash involving a semi over on the right shoulder just after the 106 South on-ramp in Sandy heading down towards 123rd uh coming out of toilla this morning the lane restrictions are still in place near 5600 West like they have been for the last several days but so far this morning no extra backups Len rolling into the early morning with good patterns and driving out of Weaver County working well onto the Saw Lake Valley us89 no delays South Weaver to the Lagoon legacy's working well there is a stalled vehicle in Ogden this is Southbound Wall Avenue at 12th Street in Weber County right lanes closed there Eric we do have some westbound slowing on I 80 as you try to get out of parley Canyon and go into the valley uh it's we've got Lane restrictions there just like we do uh many days this week you're down uh one lane so uh that's the reason for the slowing this is right as you approach the uh turn to go south on the 215 East belts I15 Utah county is looking good this morning no difficulty so far from proo to Lehigh Logan is Utah's heart ofth Arts buy your the KSL traffic center we're back to the '90s today but triple digits in the forecast I'm Matt Johnson right now 63 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios tropical storm Alberto making headlines this morning let's get the latest from ABC News ABC News I'm Sherry Preston the first of what could be many named storms of the Atlantic hurricane season bearing down on East Texas along the Gulf Coast tropical storm Alberto is forced folks like Rudy Torres and Corpus Christie to hunker down locked up on water everything and did all that you know we we pretty much did everything we were able we were able to do to take precaution bought extra batteries lights bought a couple of generators in New Mexico fires have killed at least two people and in the East the heat continues to Bear Down Russian President Vladimir Putin moving from North Korea to Vietnam before leaving pongyang though he signed a mutual Aid pact with Kim Jong-un former State Department official and now ABC News contributor Steve ganard there's really not much we can do about it um here these are two parias uh we we have really have no diplomatic uh means of influencing either country the state of Louisiana passing a bill requiring every public school classroom to display a copy of the Ten Commandments the ACLU planning a lawsuit this is ABC News is Banning cell phones in schools the best way to prevent violence and other issues among teens joining us live is ABC News crime and terrorism analyst Brad Garrett what's the connection between cell phones in schools and violence Brad mainly because of the following that phones are a distraction that kids are more focused on their phone sometimes in they are school you know it shortens their intention span it lowers their empathy um and it another big part of this is and there's been a number of studies to support this is that excessive use of cell phones and social media are rewiring kids' brains uh and making them more prone and vulnerable to certain things like depression um antisocial behavior um and with any kid or adolescent you know we all went through that period where you're much more vulnerable to be impressed by things without think thinking through are they good are they not good what effect will this have on me and what the the social psychologist and the mental health experts in this area are saying is that you know you're basically raising kids to be at a disadvantage as they become adults um that they're actually more fragile because they spend less time interacting like those of us who grew up without phones or tablets Etc um where you have to handle everything in person and that we have to go back to more of that and we certainly have to limit the amount of kid time kids spend on social media or their phones more and more states are starting to talk about some kind of legislation around phones but the concerning thing Brad is how young these kids are when they get handed those phones well that that's exactly right uh you know I don't get that uh I understand why it's done it's an easy babysitter you hand them a phone or a device you don't have to deal with them but you also have to look at what you might be creating or things that or issues you may be creating for your own child to allow that I mean you also have to be the parents have to be the sheriff over phones tablets social media uh and that can be a lot to bite off I mean I have a 14-year-old and his cell phone and tablet half the time are locked up in my office you know but limiting not taking them away permanently but limiting the amount of time they're actually allowed to have them what's the connection Brad between cell phones and gangs oh tremendous I mean a lot of you know who knows what the numbers are but I could because I read this stuff all the time the number of violent shootouts that have occurred between gangs starts on social media and they start one-upping each other and then they dare each other and then they go either hunting for each other or they just pick a location and they get into a shootout um sometimes they live stream it like Mass Shooters do or just video it for their own own you know whatever that they you know they took on this gang they killed X number of them Etc so it's it's part of their everyday life in addition to obviously using them to be drug drug dealers yeah all right Brad thanks for your reporting on this today but you know it it still comes back and Brad talked about this that the parents have to be the sheriff in this situation you go pass all the legislation you want but Mom and Dad have got to take control of this at home and uh think about how young your kids are when you hand them that phone to begin with we'll continue to talk about it I'm sure uh an important issue today KSL News time 549 traffic and weather together again brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents a gallon Andy's back in the traffic center and we've payoffs after Utah voted to allocate more spending to full day kindergarten last year test scores show huge leaps in progress for full day students KSL TV's Deanie Wimer read to me Ted is a cub Ted ran and ran this kindergartner can read not just sound out words typically only a few students get to that point this year almost half of Mrs Smith's class reads like this has that ever happened in your mm it feels amazing let's go down to the second line students in a traditional half day care kindergarten would typically end the year 70% proficient this year F day kindergarten helped Davis district score 81% proficient Mrs Smith's class a whopping 95% proficient she calls it lifechanging so it's everything to I think to them because they have that um confidence that that they can do it it's maybe the most important thing we've done for kids in our state in a long time State lawmakers Al ated more than $60 million to provide full day kindergarten for any parent that wants it and parents want it every parent wants their kid to be successful and this is a key thing at letting them be successful the State Board of Education shows Utah used to have 34% of students attending full day kindergarten among the lowest in the country now Statewide 77% are full day here at crestw elementary 90% are full day and that's the case for entire districts like Davis Logan Weber box elder Morgan Murray Salt Lake and Washington two high growth districts Alpine and neibo have only 45% of kids in full day but that's because there's no room for more classes in the schools what is [Music] it what it is in addition to F day kindergarten lawmakers also provided funding for all teachers K through three to receive intense 2-year literacy training called letters I saw a big difference after I started implementing the things that I learned in letters our data in our state has been stagnant for years and I'm not really sure if our legislators really realize that um the impact that those are up about 55% in the last 2 years third it's traffic and weather together that's the West Side struggling this morning I 8201 both seeing backups approaching 5600 West and Mountain views now slow as you head through West Valley uh on the Northbound Direction I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center we're back to the '90s today but triple digits in the forecast I'm Matt Johnson 63 Dees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios we mentioned a minute ago that 80 million Americans are under some kind of heat warning today let's get the latest on the weather from ABC News ABC News I'm Sherry Preston on this first day of summer dangerous heat in the East raging wildfires in the west and tropical storms along the Gulf Coast ABC's Melissa Adon is in Corpus Christie Texas tropical storm Alberto the first named storm of the Season slamming into Coastal Texas after wreaking havoc in Mexico and leaving three dead as officials warn of above average hurricane season for the Atlantic drug maker Eli Lily raising new concerns this morning about fake and compounded versions of some of its most popular diabetes and weight loss drugs monjaro and Zep bound a warm welcome for Vladimir Putin in Vietnam following his trip to North Korea Putin traveled to Hanoi to further strengthen ties with that country this is ABC News more Supreme Court rulings expected to come out in just the next couple of hours I think we're still waiting for Steven port no to join us at ABC News National correspondent we know a few of them they're 21 I just read uh 21 opinions still outstanding so that's a lot to cover yeah in a brief period of time but uh one of them has to do with emergency care and abortion access the question there is uh does a federal law governing Emergency Care protect access to abortion at hospitals When a Woman's Health is at risk yeah I'll tell you the one I've got my eye on because it has such broad effects with all kinds of things Steve in poroy and that is the chevron case ah what an interesting case that could have lasting legal implications for 40 years now the doctrine known as Chevron Defence has been in place if there are any attorneys who are listening they know what I'm talking about but for everybody else essentially when Congress passes a statute and intentionally or unintentionally there's some ambiguity in how that statute is supposed to be applied by a federal agency what exactly was Congress intending to say the courts for the last four de have given deference to the federal agencies to interpret that statute so an executive branch agency gets to say okay here's what the statute means private entity and here's how we're going to apply it to you well conservatives do not like that because they see that giving more power to the administrative State unelected bureaucrats versus The People's representatives in Congress so a case that's challenged shevron Defence is now before the court and the question is will the court say that uh all the these all these four decades it's been a misinterpretation of the Constitution and Congress needs to be given the difference not the federal agency so that's just one of the many cases we're watching Amanda just mentioned the uh abortion care case that comes from Idaho whether the state ban on abortion there conflicts with the federal law that says that emergency rooms have to provide Emergency Care uh to preserve the health of patients well what does that mean when it comes to abortion access what about the one that has to do with January 6 what's an issue there well hundreds of people have been convicted of obstructing an official proceeding for their participation in the riot at the capital the question is whether the justice department properly brought that particular charge given the fact that it it comes from the financial reforms after the financial collapse of 2008 well was Congress really intending to pass a statute that applied to obstructing official proceedings like investigations uh of financial crimes when it's been brought in the case of a riot that obstruct the counting of electoral votes the Supreme Court seems skeptical of that so that'll be a case that could potentially impact hundreds of prosecutions and even the prosecution of Donald Trump and the big case we're all waiting for is the one involving the uh Janu the particular January 6 case against Donald Trump and whether he enjoys absolute immunity for any official acts he undertook as president in the lead up to the riot they have to get all this done uh this week or next do they not well it's the tradition of the Supreme Court that it sits through the end of June and delivers all of its opinions by the end of June but there have been occasions rare occasions where additional opinions spill over into the first week of July let's see what happens here we'll follow it with your help appreciate your time Stephen Stephen pornoy with us on the it's going to be exciting isn't it yeah there's another one uh it's the Moody versus Net Choice social media platforms First Amendment rights which is out there that's going to be interesting too oh wow there I wonder what that challenge is I have to read more about that that's interesting uh there's a great rundown in the New York Times I just ran across and it gives you all of the opinions that have already been rendered and what the vote was it it's really a good read if you get a chance to look it up thank you for that KSL News time now 6:49 traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 tomorrow with a chance for a popup storm mainly Salt Lake City South in the afternoon partly cloudy 97 for your Saturday 99 on Sunday mostly sunny we keep it up near that triple digit Mark on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday of next week all with mostly sunny skies from the C weather center I'm Matt Johnson right now it's 63 downtown I just have to mention Tim I was just looking up that article that you referred me to yeah that is so interesting the case about social media because it's not whether or not the social media companies are violating someone's First Amendment rights it's about whether or not the government in the states of Texas and Florida are violating the social media's First Amendment rights in in requiring them to remove posts based on views uh you know particular views I think that's just so interesting and obviously a decision in that would affect every state not just those that are in the middle of that lawsuit the other thing I find interesting in that rundown is you know we talk about this split court and certainly on something like bump stocks for guns it was a 63 split but look at all of the N9 nothing or 72 rulings abortion pill uh Bill 90 NRA in first amendment 9 nothing 72 on the agency funding Trump's ballot eligibility was N9 nothing mhm so they're more than we think yeah U they always save the more controversial ones till the end however so we'll be watching that coming up this morning I should tell you the 7-day forecast was brought to you by Performance Automotive Bountiful we'll check Money news next you know I love it when something an article the other day about how groups because they don't make the same amount of money from streaming and so on as they used to when we sold actual physical when we owned music as opposed to shared it yeah that they have to tour more and especially the older groups who aren't or don't want want to or can't tour as much in order for them to make up for that Gap they're selling their catalog this is kind of like one last payday we saw it with Michael Jackson we saw it with Paul McCartney yeah Neil Young sold his for $300 million a while back and this one 1.2 billion scientists have created glowing patunas medical researcher Keith wood inserted a firefly gene into a tobacco plant 40 years ago just to see what would happen today that experiment has morphed into the decorative tunia for your garden which glows in the dark however the bioluminescence now comes from a fungus instead of fireflies yeah maybe we can do away with those little garden lights that are solar and the with the most sunlight of the year and it's the official start of summer third of course traffic and weather together I-15 traffic is still clear of delays although volumes are starting to pick up a little bit as you cross point of the mountain the biggest delay you'll wait on right now is I80 in that stretch before 5600 West because of road work I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center we'll jump another 10° today putting us at 90 mostly sunny I'm Matt Johnson right now now 64° at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios we're already hearing about some flooding and actually seen some video of it in South P Padre Island today Texas from that name storm let's get the latest from ABC news from ABC News I'm Sherry Preston a warning in Texas from the police chief of South Padre Island the water's up to the dunes right now so it's definitely not safe to be out on the beaches currently the first name storm of what could be a busy Atlantic hurricane season tropical storm Alberto slamming into Coastal Texas leaving three dead in Mexico two people killed in wildfires in New Mexico the one in Roso has led to the evacuation of about 7,000 people and in the Midwest and the Northeast heat is the story it's a different type of feel like this is very humid hot outside's hot inside's even hotter those folks in Philadelphia one of many cities declaring heat Health emergencies through the weekend about an hour from now the US Supreme Court could hand down rulings on some pretty major cases among them that Blockbuster abortion case out of Idaho it pits that State's ban on abortions unless necessary to prevent death against a federal law that guarantees that any person who comes to an emergency room gets emergency care even in those rare and tragic cases when Emergency Care might mean the termination of a pregnancy this is the biggest abortion case the court has taken since it overturned Row versus Wade and it could have impact on abortion bans across the country ABC's Terry Moran another case revolves around the question of whether presidents including Donald Trump can be immune from prosecution for actions taken while in office drug maker Eli Lily is Raising concerns about fake versions of its weight loss drugs currently there is a shortage of several doses of these weight loss medications according to the FDA allowing compounding pharmacies to make and sell versions of the drugs Lily testing some compounded product saying they found issues ranging from bacteria to impurities and in at least one case a product that was nothing more than sugar alcohol ABC's Eva Pilgrim Louisiana lawmaker signing a bill requiring the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom you're listening to ABC News the legislature special session last evening dealt with changes to Title 9 and talked about the future of Some Coal Fired power plants joining us now live is the speaker of the Utah house Mike Schultz Mr speaker thank you for your time can you explain to us a little bit about how we're handling What Might Have Been a conflict between Utah law and Title Nine yeah good morning Kim and Amanda thank you so much for allowing me to be here with you and your listeners uh yeah so Title 9 is in direct conflict with uh the law that we passed uh last year and and a couple years ago uh not allowing uh biological males to enter locker rooms enter uh bathrooms play female sports uh Title 9 was actually put in place in 1972 by Congress the Biden Administration has attempted to rewrite Title 9 and what was passed by Congress and allow biological males who identify as a female to play women's sports and uh to enter locker rooms uh shower areas of of biological females and that's just not okay uh in in the state of Utah and again all they have to do is identify as a female and and then they could play sports uh female sports and and and go into locker rooms and that's just not okay it did sound like uh that the legislature passed this last night totally expecting that there's going to be some legal action down the road and probably not too far down the road well there's already some legal action but let me tell you what it does this is important so instead of Utah having to sue uh the federal government H in order for us to uh you know maintain our rights and our state sovereignty it actually flips it and it makes the the federal government Sue Utah which I don't know if that's going to happen or not and so it directs all of our state agencies our school districts uh our universities to follow state law not the rule that was imposed by the unelected bureaucrats from Washington DC and the Biden Administration and so uh we believe and we know there's some real constitutional issues with what came out of the Biden Administration and so we're willing to stand up and take a stand and try to do what's right for Utah what about the decision about the coal fired power plant yeah so this is a decision that uh you know we've been trying to work on for several years with IP and the legislature look we are in an energy shortage right now in Across the Nation and certainly in Utah we do not have enough power to meet the growing needs of the electrification and everything things switching over to Electric electricity the last thing we need to do right now is be shutting down our reliable affordable uh energy and by the way this uh coold Power Plant that's being talked about is one of the cleanest coal power plants in the nation um as far as producing producing energy and so it's important that we don't take these types of things offline we don't want UT talks to experience brown outs uh and blackouts like like it that has been experienced all across the country and so we're working hard uh to to to to do all we can to save the energy production here in the state of Utah uh we have to do it energy cost or skyrocketing through the roof right now because there is not enough energy on the grid and it will affect utans so we need to do all we can to to keep this power plant open speaker thanks for your time uh we know you had a late night last night thank you appreciate you thanks for having me have a good day you do the same that is Utah house Speaker Mike Schultz helping us out on the in-depth at 15 and 45 let's get another look at traffic and weather together brought to you by but till now widespread layoffs have been reserved for humans never before has his Man's Best Friend been subjected to forced retirement but some dogs are now out of work at a prison in southern Brazil 1300 inmates are kept within the Prison Walls by guards in the towers and the guard dogs who Patrol the grass strips surrounding the prison the pups pad their way back and forth along a 3,000 ft perimeter ready to pounce at the first sign of trouble but Guard Dogs cost $7,000 they eat they have Veterinary bills it's a huge expense that the prison will pay no more because they've decided geese are cheaper geese are nuts The Wall Street Journal reports some prison officials were at a barbecue and they got cornered by a gaggle of angry geese they squawk and honk and attack and make all kinds of commotion when they see someone and that's enough to alert the guards that's the warden explaining the geese have perfect night vision they're light sleepers officials say you just feed them rice they never get sick so no vet bills and they can't be bribed like dogs who you know look the other way if you wet their snouts with a little raw steak if you know what I'm saying so the geese are waddling and fluttering back and forth along the Prison Walls and they're Rock Solid they hate everybody not a single Escape since they put on the uniform metaphorically speaking and a bonus the geese of San Pedro Brazil are a big hit on Instagram so the expensive guard dogs have been retired and we now honor them for providing the answer to the Eternal question the answer is prison officials in officials say that what Netanyahu did is beyond the pale in response they've cancelled a highlevel meeting with Israel focused on security and threats from Iran but still several top Israeli officials are coming to the White House today meeting with National Security adviser Jake Sullivan for more informal meetings ABC Selena Wang this is ABC News climate activists were arrested after vandalizing another iconic piece of History the target this time Stonehenge ABC News foreign correspondent Lama Hassan today is one of the most important days in the calendar for stone Tang which you can see right behind me because it is the summer solstice when the sun aligns with the stones with celebration starting tonight it is open to the public today but yesterday it was quite shocking to see those climate activists spray orange powder on some of the stones this morning one of Britain's most famous historical sites covered in orange paint two climate activists run up to the ancient stones at Stonehenge spraying fire extinguishes containing orange powder vandalizing the 5,000 year old Monument other visitors rushing to try to stop them officers arriving on the scene arresting the pair on suspicion of damaging the ancient Monument I think it's pretty awful I think there are better ways to protest and I don't think damaging a historic site is the way to do it the activists from just stop oil known for their high-profile protests previously making headlines for throwing tomato soup on Vango sunflower hours in 2022 demanding the incoming British government end fossil fuel usage by 2030 the protest group claiming the paint was made of cornstarch which will wash away in the rain but experts say that's not necessarily true that the ancient stones are porous and the cornstarch could have leeched into the monoliths I think the assumption is it's not going to damage cuz oh they're giant stones and they're outside and they've been here for thousands and thousands of years but that's a leap of faith and I don't think it's one that can be guaranteed well English Heritage telling us that they are deeply saddened but there is a sense of relief because they had been worried about the rain but we've been blessed with this glorious weather and they did manage to get all the powder off using specialized H lowers and they say there has been no visible damage I I'm all about free speech and I understand that sometimes action can be symbolic speech but I don't understand the targeting of historic you know buildings and and things like Stonehedge well I guess they figure that's the way to get the most attention but there's the picture of the plane I was talking about a minute ago and orange paint seems to be the way uh these days and this Environmental Group just stop oil posted a video somebody cutting through a fence at London's I believe it's pronounced stanstead airport uh and so they're going to have a clean up on uh that airplane there that's sitting on the tarmac as well I just feel like there can be there's there are more productive ways to get your message out there yeah uh our thanks again to Lama Hassan for that report this morning on the in- depth weather service has issued a flash flood warning for areas in eastern Utah over the next few days third it's traffic and weather together I-15 traffic is still running slow at point of the mountain and on I 80 out by 5600 West Foothills got some weight time now for few blocks going from 17 South up towards Sunnyside I'm Andy Farnsworth at the KSL traffic center we'll jump another 10 degrees today putting us at 90 mostly sunny I'm Matt Johnson 64 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios Summer's here and so is the tropical storm season let's check in with ABC news from ABC News I'm Sherry Preston tropical storm Alberto coming Shore in Mexico three people were killed in the tempo area as those further north along the Texas Gulf Coast continue getting swamped ABC's Melissa Adon is in Corpus Christie right here in Corpus Christie we still feel those winds this is how big tropical storm Alberto is it made landfall in Mexico but those outer bands really impacting the Texas coastal communities folks here are doing well heating caution uh definitely they still experiencing some of that wind and they're going to have some more rain here the hot weather is the big story across much of the country that heat Dome continuing to trap hot air close to the ground the US Supreme Court is getting close to wrapping up its session preparing to hand down some potentially big decisions including ones on presidential immunity abortion and charges against the January 6 protesters there are hundreds of members of the mob that attacked the capital on January 6 who say they have been improperly charged in their cases before the court they say that the law prosecutors used was designed for business and financial crimes crimes and there are also major cases on homeless encampments on social media regulating social media on guns for domestic abusers so there's big news coming out of the Supreme Court in the coming weeks ABC's Terry Moran at the Supreme Court if you go to school in Louisiana you're going to see them the state passing a new law requiring The Ten Commandments be displayed in all state Public School classrooms from kindergarten through college opponents say it's unconstitutional that it's an egregious melding of church and state supporters say the purpose of the measure is not solely religious that the Ten Commandments have historical significance that's ABC's will reev Amazon says it's shifting away from those plastic air pillows used for packaging in North America to recycled paper Amazon says paper is more environmentally friendly and just works better you're listening to ABC News I learned this morning that the Los Angeles Unified School District has voted to ban cell phones in the classroom and uh I'm not surprised Deb janovic and I know it's something you're going to be focused on yeah it's not only cell phones it's social media it would be uh like bookended beginning of the day to end of the day uh this is the second largest school district in the nation so this is a sweeping move and the board is going to take about looks like a couple of months to figure out how this would look would there be lockers to lock up cell phones would kids be instructed to just keep them in their backpacks and would this look different K through six than it does through you know for high schoolers so there's a lot of questions there how it to look but this is a major move and it is one that other states are starting to make as well Florida has already enacted a ban on uh cell phones and schools and they've locked kids out of searches by locking down the Wi-Fi on campuses so they've taken a move in made that move in Florida as well well in the granite School District here uh in Salt Lake County they've been discussing a uh Universal cell phone ban in schools um across the granite School District we're going to check in with them live today in the 9:00 hour of the show to see if a cell phone ban will be implemented in the granite School District before the start of the school year oh boy yeah something to keep an eye on and we will David janovic coming up top of the hour here on KSL News radio right now 819 traffic and weather getting more decisions from the supreme court this morning so far not the big ones that we had been watching for but these certainly affect many people here's one this is uh Chia verini Chini versus city of Napoleon Ohio where it's it's a case about the Fourth Amendment and probable cause and it says that probable cause for one charge in a criminal proceeding does not categorically defeat a fourth amendment malicious prosecution claim so just because they had probable cause over here doesn't mean that they can charge you over here if there's not probable cause then another one is Gonzalez versus Travino this is has another uh issue with probable cause for arrest and it's remanding that case back to the fifth circuit to to take a look at then there is Diaz versus unit Diaz versus United States and this is about expert testimony so we're we're following all of these and they're all interesting but not the ones that we had been pointing out in the news necessarily my eyes are glazing over little bit I I jokingly told Randall in the Newser I said Amanda is the only one that understands what she's reading here oh goodness but that's the legal background we appreciate rates are not the only thing that has evolved in the mortgage industry the way loan programs are priced has also undergone some changes these days sometimes FHA Loans work out better even factoring in mortgage insurance this is because loans have what are called loan level pricing adjustments and they are usually much higher on conventional loans these fees are more prominent with Cash out refinance finances low down payment purchases and lower credit score scenarios these extra costs end up pushing interest rates higher and this is why a rate quote without context is usually inaccurate it can be confusing but we can help you sort through the numbers to see which option fits your situation think and McGregor mortgages Made Simple 801-264-7408 89115 Tim Jr here from RGS exteriors I but triple digits in the forecast I'm Matt Johnson right now 70 Dees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios we already have word of at least three deaths in Mexico from Alberto let's get the latest now from ABC News ABC News I'm Sheri Preston tropical storm Alberto churning ashore near Tempo Mexico but causing flooding further north along the Texas Gulf Coast two deaths confirmed in a pair of major wildfires burning in central New Mexico ABC's Jim Ryan has that firefighters have gotten some help from the weather as they tried to contain the two blazes heavy rain and even some hail fell Wednesday around the village of Ruidoso which was evacuated because of the fires now the concern shifts from wildfires to flooding the other big weather story is the heat potentially dangerous hot weather across much of the country especially in the Northeast all of that weather happening today which is the summer solstice a new Louisiana law will require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom opponents questioning its constitutionality lawsuits are expected drug maker Eli Lily says beware of counterfeit monjaro and fake Zep bound knockoff versions of those popular diabetes and weight loss drugs are showing up more and more this is ABC News parents and teachers are seeing big payoffs after Utah voted to allocate more spending to full day kindergarten last year test scores show huge leaps in progress for full day students KSL TV's deie Wimmer has the story read to me Ted is a cub Ted ran and ran this kindergartner can read not just sound out words typically only a few students get to that point this year almost half of Mrs Smith's class reads like this that ever happened in your mm- it feels amazing let's go down to the second line students in a traditional halfday kindergarten would typically end the year 70% proficient this year F day kindergarten helped Davis district score 81% proficient Mrs Smith's class a whopping 95% proficient she calls it life changing so it's everything to I think to them because they have that um confidence that that they can do it it's maybe the most important thing we've done for kids in our state in a long time State lawmakers allocated more than $60 million to provide full day kindergarten for any parent that wants it and parents want it every parent wants their kid to be successful and this is a key thing at letting them be successful the State Board of Education shows Utah used to have 34% of students attending full day kindergarten among the lowest in the Country Now Statewide 77% are full day here at cres View Elementary 90% are full day and that's the case for entire districts like Davis Logan Weber box elder Morgan Murray Salt Lake and Washington two high growth districts Alpine and Neo have only 45% of kids in full day but that's because there's no room for more classes in the schools what is it Y what it is in addition to full day kindergarten lawmakers also provided funding for all teachers K through three to receive intense 2-year literacy training called letters I saw a big difference after I started implementing the things that I learned in letters our data in our state has been stagnant for years and I'm not really sure if our legislators really realize that um the impact that those two things together have deie has a lot more on this story and I just love it that you can find on ksltv.com yeah you want to know how meaningful that is for a first grade teacher uh when they get those kids walking through the door already reading yeah that's huge what an amazing difference that makes in getting them a jump start into their education uh all right let's uh get another look at how the roads are doing this morning with traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's dinopay app save up to 20 cents a gallon back to you Andy and right now i-1 15's got delays in both directions in Salt Lake County southbounds the surprising backup though going down towards 1300 South because of a crash then we've got additional slowdowns now between 53rd and 7200 South on the Northbound side traffic hitting the brakes around the banket or highway exit coming over point of the mountain Len taking a look at Weber Davis counties we're looking pretty good so far this morning I15 in good shape all the way from Ogden to Salt Lake City little bit slowing off of I-15 in Clearfield on sr1 193 now this is just west of the freeway and then on on Antelope Drive as you make your way toward the freeway a little slow there at that intersection and Redwood Road as you approach North Salt Lake is a little bit slow as well Eric footh Hill Drive getting slower coming off of I 80 or the 215 East Belt and heading up to about uh 1300 South that's when you'll get back to a normal for a few blocks and you got a little bit of slowing between Sunnyside and Mario keki if you're on to the mountains eastbound slowing now approaching the East Canyon exit and a little bit going into Lamb's Canyon as well and then just a touch of it as you approach the us40 exit add so over Creek Hogle Zoo has so much to explore and now there's even more to love the allnew
