Dabo Swinney Scrimmage Report - Pt. 1

all right well I let me open a statement uh what do y'all got how' it go today it was good I mean we we uh today's the last preseason game if you will so today's a today is a big day for a lot because it's our last full live day we'll still have we we we'll pretty much we got uh tomorrow is kind of our last Camp practice if you will uh so we'll break we'll break camp tomorrow and then um they'll have a day off Saturday and then we go all Georgia prep starting Sunday uh so then we got we got a full full two weeks uh we'll start Sunday and uh Sunday Monday Tuesday and then they'll start school Wednesday um and so we'll just have meetings on Wednesday and then we'll go Thursday Friday Saturday and then it's game week so got a good plan now it's now it's about getting out of Camp mode and start you know bringing them back a little bit and then again finish up on Clemson tomorrow and then turn our eyes to our opponent um so it's been good today was today was again a big day a lot of special team stuff a lot today was a lot of situational stuff especially at the end of practice there just some special situations that that can come out through come up throughout the course of the year that you want to you know it's too late to work on those things when they come up so you got to make sure you got a good plan so kind of a lot of our checklist stuff to to uh make sure we're ready and um and then uh a lot of a lot of uh we're mostly all always oneson ones and today uh we mixed in a lot of twos on ones and that's that's intentional as well because this is that point where sometimes guys get a little comfortable and you need to be exposed and uh so um and that's what happened for some guys and and for some guys I was I was they they they were exposed in a good way you know really showed some some things that that you you're very encouraged by so you it was a good day um as far as getting done what we need to get done and biggest thing is nobody got hurt um that's the biggest positive because you got to go you you know you you can't you can't you don't get tough in the season you don't just show up and know how you have to you have to get ready to play football and uh so this is one of those days that you just you got to cut it loose and go play and and um you know you hope that everybody come through it okay and and and so we did so I'm happy about that that was a a huge positive and and even from overall we're we're in a pretty good spot from a health standpoint so um again still got some good work to do uh but you know the the the two main scrimmages preseason games if you will are are behind us um right now we've got three guys that are out for the year and then we got a few guys that I would say are just dayto day you know is that two days is that a week is that two weeks you know that's their dayto day uh but we' got three guys that are out for the year Watson young Tor ACL and then miles Oliver who's been out uh with an ACL and a PEC he he's going to be out and then Ian Reed uh unfortunately had had a knee injury too so he's going to be out for the season so but other than that um you know got again a few guys banged up but uh nobody else it's out for the year or anything like that or for a long period of time so um they're kind of all dayto day at this point offensively speaking were there a couple guys that that stood out from this scrimmage yeah I I I think all three of our quarterbacks I'm really you know in fact I told the team that afterwards I've been really pleased with all three of those guys and and that's what I was hoping coming out of um camp that that we could come out of some confidence with three guys that and and Paul's our fourth guy you know I always forget about him and he's Paul Paul could go do it in a heartbeat with his eyes closed um but those three guys have all made steps and gotten better and I'm really really pleased with that a lot of lot of lot of guys making some plays in the passing game um at all levels you know receiver tight end running back back so you know just a just a noticeable um you know level of of confidence that I see coming out of out of a couple scrimmages and that's what you want to see so um you know I'm proud of him for that took care of the ball today didn't have a lot of bad decisions or anything like that and we held a couple of guys today you know like a mafa for example he didn't get any reps intentionally really wanted to see all those young guys and how they would handle a bigger a role um so a lot of guys are flashing but now we got to go we got to you know we we can do it in practice all day long we got to go do it on game day and now it's about you know starting to turn the page to that the offensive line won the day Saturday as you said did you get a response from the defensive line today yeah yeah and again mostly ones on twos today uh so I'd say they both did what they should do in that situation uh but both you know groups very competitive uh from both sides you said the the defense was discipline during the first I guess how did they respond much better much better um we didn't have any off sides uh so so they did a they did a much better job today created a couple turnovers you know right out of the gate first first uh First Defense uh was good to see you know a couple young guys make some plays today again created a fumble recovery and then had an interception later and knocked another one loose but but the offense came up with it so it's good is Shelton Lewis among those that's day today yeah he's he's day today right now upper body lower body uh his slower body two scrimmages in TJ moo he was starting from a little bit behind just coming in the summer but what's he kind of done in that deep receiver group making a making a solid move man he's he's he's showing up I mean he's still he's still not quite you know where the first tier guys are from a knowledge standpoint but he's as i' said is a natural he makes play he had an opportunity on one today he didn't make that he'd like to have back but it was a competitive play stroer did a great job of getting it out but you know he's he's just gotten better and better every single day and I think you'll continue to see that with ma F out was there a running back or two that maybe separated a little bit uh I wouldn't say separate I think they're all three as I've said I mean they're all you know kei's kind of his own guy he's just different I say that all the time if you really watch him play it doesn't take you long to figure out that you really got to have the his own category for him but but Jay and and Easy E you kind of put them in that mafa category and they they are very talented backs really proud of them um they both had good camps it's been great because you know Jay had hasn't really been able to put it fully together uh so it's been good for him to just be stack days and the same thing for E he's he's a different guy than he was in the in the uh in the spring and so just game is slowed down he's playing fast and big strong physical kid so I really like our backs and then again Keith just is different he just brings a little he's just a different pitch if you will uh the other day you said you might get Jaden Lucas back did y all able to get him back and did he play today yeah he's not quite back yet but he's close he should be back you know any day and be ready to roll how was the kicking competition progressed from Saturday uh whoer still ahead you know uh they're they're both you know I was proud of uh Robert you know today I think I think he was perfect today uh I don't think he missed one today but but um you know who's your right now same amount of kicks he's just he's just a littlee right now how's your confidence in I guess tooy Fegan U Hampton and and Brandon stroer with the injuries to the quarterback one right yeah stroer made some plays today it was good to see because he he was one of those guys that had gotten banged up early so he back out there and and uh he made a couple of really good competitive plays Fagan and Gibson uh and and Ashton are three young talented guys that that uh you know we need to we need them to keep coming home they're very talented and you know they're not complete players but they they've all flashed at different times I think passion is the one that's G up a couple times we talk to players just in terms of his enthusiasm and Just Energy and stuff what have you noticed from him yeah I mean he's a he's a greatl looking kid big strong I mean you don't see many freshman that look like him you know from a just a size standpoint he's big strong and physically developed he's not a doesn't like a he doesn't like a freshman so I think that's the biggest thing that that jumps out at you with him is just his physical presence and he's a focused kid you know his dad's the head coach at Arkansas Pine Bluff he's a coach's kid he's been around ball his whole life he's just you know you can he's got good instincts for the game and um but all those guys you know Gibson and TR boy they're all they're all doing some good things and then stroer I kind of put in that group too because he wasn't able to play last year so it's a it's a good young group they just got to they just got to keep uh keep coming on cuz we're going to need them defense get some takeaways today we any any turnovers yeah we had two uh I think Manaka came up with one on an overthrow um uh and then U and then early on stroer set the edge and Sammy Brown I think stroer knocked it out Sammy came up with it I think right there the two of them kind of did a great job out in the open field creting a turnover um so I think that was the only two that we had in the spring in the spring you said you wanted to see l come take a step in the summer and and and camp and see he can be that guy has he done that yeah that's why we didn't take anybody out the portal in May is because of of what we saw out of him and Harris entrance in the spring you know we we looked at maybe a guy because we weren't sure in January looked at a couple guys didn't didn't work out and so we said well let's see how it goes this spring and and then we can go from there in May and and man at the end of spring we were we were like okay uh different felt different especially Matt be able to get a full spring with those guys so we're we're confident and U the job Ryan has done a great job he's very smart and he's uh he's he's in the best shape he's ever been he did a great job getting his body where it needs to be Harris is is just just gotten better and better and better you know and more consistent with his snaps and then Trent Trent's just steady man you can just count on him you know same thing very smart uh he's comfortable in there at Center so you know they're all playing you know Harris and Trent are playing a lot of guard too Lam was pretty much just playing Center but but um we feel good about the group you know feel good about the group and then chappie is doing some snapping as our fourth guy as well but I'm proud of those guys I mean we're we're they've been very consistent Watson was it just compliations just tour ACL yeah just tour practice oh TJ Mor said you were keeping him at one spot and he was taking it a lot mentally like how would you say he's progressed just through now yeah he's got he's gotten better every day uh again you can tell that that it's slowing down for him and now you start to see is just you know his natural gifts I mean again he does things naturally but just being able to do it full speed because you're really confident in what you're doing accentuates his ability and and and so that's what you see with him he's just every day he's he's coming on and getting better and so I'm really proud of of uh what he's done uh in a short amount of time he's he's going to be going to be a really good player Ian Westco we we we got us a couple go right there they got you know they're not Jerry Rice yet but they're they're they're going to be good ones if they you know stay healthy and just keep keep progressing like we want any thought to moving anybody to Corner no we we like our guys at corner we got came in of the season with eight guys and and U you know we got one that's out for the year in Miles Oliver but we feel good about about those other seven guys for sure going against that's what they're here for going against the twoes did you see the the success that you would have like to seen from the first offense specifically from Kate yeah Kate another great day I mean you know he's again I mean I'm just so impressed with him but I mean he's got to go do it on game day now right I mean you know we can see it all day in practice I mean I'd rather I'd rather see it in practice than not see it in practice but uh really proud of what he's done and and you know next step is now let's go let's going to be consistent and do it on game day week after week after week after week and if if he'll play like he's practice he's going to have a great year Force how close are Burley and the uh Burley had a good day today as a matter of fact I'm really proud of him U because he he was a little limited early but you know he got in there and got bladed up a little bit today and you just notice him when burle when burley's in there and his motor's going he you notice him he's a he's a problem um but he's just he just needs rests he need you know he's had some setbacks really since he got here where he's had just inconsistency and being able to just stack days but you know he when he's out there you notice him and that was easy today right out of the gate just okay oh yeah there's Vic Burley forgot about him uh you know he's he's just a big old strong kid and U could be a really really good player if he'll just you know again be able to stay available and just just keep developing how close is Elijah Thurman to kind of break it into that offensive L yeah he's going to help us uh you know he's a guy that that for sure will play you know he's he's not you know he's not a guy that we need to start hopefully uh you know
