seemed to be on the verge of breaking up. Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher had a pretty
volatile relationship to say the least. In fact, It’s amazing the band lasted as long
as it did. And today let’s take at the event’s that led to the band’s messy breakup in 2009.
For almost two decades Oasis would dominate the rock scene and become one of the
most volatile bands in the genre. Led by brothers Liam and Noel gallagher, the
band’s origins dated back to the early 90’s. The group would sell over 70 million records,
have eight number one albums in the UK and sell out arenas and stadiums around the world. And they
were without a doubt one of the most consistent English rock bands during their time together.
Since their inception in the early 90’s the Gallagher brothers have pretty much been at each
other’s throats. The band almost broke with the release of their first album, 1994’s Definitely
Maybe. During a showcase gig at the Whisky A Go Go, Noel nearly quit the band according to
the Supersonic documentary after Liam started to insult the other band members and threw a
tambourine at his brother. Upset, Noel bolted for a few days, but ended up coming back to the band
leading to the song Talk Tonight being written. Fast forward a year later and NME magazine
did an interview with the Gallagher brothers that would be released as a single. It was called
the Wibbling Rivalry, The interview was notable because it featured a violent argument between
the brothers over an incident that happened months earlier when the band was arrested on a ferry
in the Netherlands following a violent brawl. As Oasis turned their attention to recording their
sophomore record (What’s The Story) Morning Glory in Wales, the brothers once again got violent with
each other. During the recording, Liam brought back a group of people he met at a bar back to
the studio while his brother was working. Annoyed, Noel reportedly hit his brother over the head
with a cricket bat. That bat would be later sold at auction with a letter of authenticity
after it was saved by the album’s producer. As Oasis hit the road to support the album,
tensions once again failed to disappear as Liam was a no show at the band’s first gig in
the states. Not only that, but Liam backed out of the band’s taping of MTV unplugged complaining
about a sore throat. His brother Noel would take over vocal duties that night. But Liam would
still be present, but he wouldn't be on stage, instead hurling insults at his brother
from the balcony. Reports grew that the band were going to split, but they opted to
continue touring. I’ve done a whole video on their volatile tour with the Screaming Trees
during this time. The link is down below! A relative period of calm would happen for
the next four years and it wasn’t until 2000 when things flared up once again. A gig in Spain
would be cancelled following drummer Alan White injuring his arm. With nothing to do, the
band got plastered and Liam questioned his borther and whether his daughter was actually
his and not another mans. A scuffle would ensue and Noel left the band and Oasis continued
their European tour without their guitarist. Fast forward to 2005, Oasis was set to
play the Heineken Jammin Festival in Italy. During the band’s set, Liam abrutply left
the stage during Champagne Supernova. During an interview that Noel gave
to Spin Magazine around this time he said some pretty disparaging
things about his brother revealing “I’ve kind of learnt that instead of arguing
stuff out with him and ending up in a fight, I work on his psychology and he’s
completely freaked out by me now, He’s actually frightened to death of me” he'd say.
2008-2009 should have been a time for the band to celebrate. They would release their
final album 2008’s Dig Out Your Soul. The album was Oasis best reviewed record since
the one two punch of 1994’s Definitely maybe and 1995’s What’s the Story Morning Glory.
It was also the highest charting LP of the last decade for the group and the tour to support
the album was also a massive financial success. Despite all these accomplishments, relationship
between Liam and Noel hit an all-time low. The brothers weren’t even talking off stage
as their main form of communication was taking pot shots at each other on social media.
In 2009 Noel gave an interview with Q magazine, where he made some pretty harsh remarks about his
brother and bandmate saying: He's the angriest man you'll ever meet. He's like a man with a fork
in a world of soup.Later that year Noel would claim “Life would be easier without Oasis.”
A week before playing their final show, cracks were even more evident in an
interview that Liam gave at the time saying “He doesn’t like me and I don’t like him, that’s
it. We’re grown men, you know what I mean, and as long as the music … as long as we
do the tour, that’s all that matters.” The band would play their final gig at the
V-Festival in Staffordshire, england on august 22, 2009. The band just had four gigs left to go on
their world tour, which had already been the mon the road for a year so far. The band was supposed
to play a second night at the same festival but their show was cancelled due to what
liam gallagher would claim was laryngitis, but his brother Noel would claim his brother
wasn't suffering but rather from a hangover. Liam turned around and sued his brother for libel,
but the lawsuit would be eventually dropped. It was also reported that Noel took
issue with Liam advertising his clothing brand in the band’s tour program.
The band’s next gig was scheduled to take place a week later in France and that’s where things
completely fell apart. The band was placed in a small dressing room and it was probably the
worst thing the promoters could have done. Noel would claim in 2011 that Liam was angry over
the bad press he had gotten for cancelling their show the previous week saying He thinks I’m
some sort of puppet master who controls the media in England,”. “So we get to Paris
and he’s reeling off journalists names. It’s all manner of people I have never met, ‘
According to the guitarist, Liam then picked up a plum, lobbed it at the wall, walked out of
the room and then came back wielding a guitar and started to swing it as his brother's face. The
band had five minutes before hitting the stage when this all went down but by that point Noel
left and got into a car and decided he was done. The band didn’t take the stage that night and
several hours later noel put out a statement saying“It’s with some sadness and great relief to
tell you that I quit tonight,” “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could
not go on working with Liam a day longer. Following their split the remaining
members of Oasis continued as beady eye which went on until 2014. Following their split
Liam would pursue a solo career while Noel form the group high flying birds. The brothers would
fight back and forth at each other in the press and on social media. Of course a question of
a reunion still lingers over both brothers and as recently as this year Liam revealed that
he is would be open to reunite with his brother once the pandemic is over to raise money
for a National Health Service (NHS) charity. So that does it for today's video guys. Thanks
