Gamecocks history Shaq when you play basketball you go around a guy you give him you give him something you just don't go run around him you know what I mean the head ball coach has a unique style that is all his own and having come from SEC rival Florida it took some getting used to on the part of loyal Carolina fans Steve perer when he came in he was a very divisive figure I mean there were a lot of blowout victories against South Carolina so there were a lot of people who did not like Steve's corer until he became a game [Music] c Conor Conor let's try to hit him on the run you got you're you know there's 22 individuals on a on a field at any given moment he's seen a lot of football over his career we teach you guys this won you Flex out just a little bit go down here 12 yds and run an in straight down here 12 yds yeah doing things you it might not be ideal to some people but it works for us and the players love it and and so you know he he just have a way of getting the players to is that if it ain't done right they going to keep going on and on until he get what he [Music] want uh wait a minute time out bit you see what he does all the time DD I wish someday you could run with your hands working all the way down here when you get right here put your foot in turn around but you you do like that all the time that you you've done that ever since you've been here you got to quit it got to quit it run with your arms and body Lan till you get to the stop point you know you're always trying to get better each year no matter what you do in life so that's what we're trying to do and we're trying to win the SEC some year his 2012 team might do just that a long way removed from when spier arrived in Columbia in 2005 taking over a l Holtz program that had trouble maintaining a 500 record well basically sper came in and didn't see the commitment to winning that he thought he would have uh he had that in Florida all the time because you had guys who had won at the beginning and who had kept winning so he had to build that here it really started probably around the 2009 2010 season you could start kind of seeing things changing um the the big recruits in the state were choosing South Carolina uh they they were winning big games now he's only a handful of Victories away from becoming South Carolina's all-time winning his coach that'll make him the all-time winning his coach at two SEC programs which nobody else can say the change over the years of University South Carolina football has just been you know crazy I mean in a good way though 11 wins last year our best year in school history and we know we lost Marcus lore I think week six or seven downfield blocking yeah we had a lot of Unity last year and injuries and our quarterback dismissed from the team and we just had a lot of guys step up well some kind of adversity hits the team every year just about unless you go undefeated and that very seldom happens uh we had some other running backs that really stepped up Brandon ws and then Kenny miles both those guys played super uh the rest of the season we bounced back and just kept playing and hopefully when adversity hits this year we're going to do the same thing for as much time as the football family spins together one would think they would rush home every chance they got but with two of his sons working with him Spurrier has created a home away from home for his whole staff one thing I've always emphasized when I became a head coach is that first of all the coaches were all going to get along change the channel yeah certainly the the atmosphere that's created by our head coach U is great here with with family and wives and kids and um and I have a bunch of kids and it's good for them to have their grandparents around a bunch it makes our staff a real comfortable staff we enjoy coming to work we have as you can see all these hats tonight for our summer birthdays my wife Jerry has uh been called the best head coach wife in the country by a lot of people as far as getting everybody together getting the families together it is a lot more fun having your family around uh we're all in it together we're going to win together out out they're either too lazy or they say they don't have too much time but we got plenty of time I'm in here at least 5 to 6 days a week during the season and I'm a believer that you get on there and sweat I do I do 30 minutes at least of cardio between the treadmill and a stationary bike and then we got that big rubber ball I do a whole bunch of situps and then some 15 lb weight stuff sort of working the upper body chest area a little bit get something out of there I I really believe the reason I'm still coaching at 67 is because I work out that every day that's the only reason I think I encourage all those High School coaches out there if you're overweight you need to get your butt on the treadmill and get yourself in shape like the players I just believe it's important coaches should be in shape to be an example for the players all right I'm getting on [Music] treadmill with no professional sports in South Carolina College football is King the state is brimming with young talent that for years has left the region for bigger programs but Spurrier and his staff have gone to Great Lengths to recruit the state and it has paid major dividends clearly there's a lot of great players in the state of South Carolina there always has been we just have never been able to get them to come play football here gbur is he's big on recruiting in a you know geographic area where the players can parents can see him play because he's such a family man you want your mother your father your aunts your uncles your friends step in Williams briy Stadium see their son go out there and make a name for himself on the SEC sat we've been fortunate to sign uh the Mr Football which has voted the best player in our state the last four years and uh maybe that's helped get some other players also Mor DAV and Clowney and sha rowand and and all of those guys have come in and made an immediate impact from the day they stepped on the campus it wasn't easy with another top 15 program in Clemson just up the road but he managed to carve out his own Niche and if you notice South Carolina has basically owned Clemson and instate recruiting over the past few years you work red do got to work red do bring it tight hey fellas fellas great week do what you need to do today worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes to the top all three 1 2 3 to the top [Music] what does he line up going we're going to have big year they got to keep playing well clown is a special player and probably the most dominating defensive player on the field he's 65 which is you know rare to see somebody running a 45 at 265 you know he's faster than me this definitely his speed that separates him from everybody else in the country then on the other side you have you know Devon Taylor he's 67 68 he's 275 lb we play it sh you see that sh you see that we play the linebackers man got all seniors they been there since day one you got Shaq Wilson Reggie Bowen we've done a great job of reading quarterback eyes and breaking on the ball when we're playing his own coverages uh so that's going to be aspect for us here hard to say that our defense is our safety DJ swarer you know he's an animal he doesn't care about anything he'll come hit anybody he bring the fire to the Deon when he get angry he bring us all together we ain't giving him nothing that's you got to be good on baby but this is a Spur your team so there is no shortage of Firepower on the offensive side either led by the return of running back Marcus Latimore from ACL surgery [Music] [Applause] [Music] I think he's uh just as good a player maybe a little better than he was before the surgery it did you know one thing and that that just made me mentally tougher we really rely on him in a lot of the big games the big games is when he's the Workhorse he knows he can be just as valuable in the Run game as in the passing game and uh with his talents it's just really scary to toss up what you can do with a guy like him Connor Shaw is a good leader he tries to lead by example you know and he's a tough kid you know he's just guts you know he's never going to quit you know he's going to get those extra yards all guys know here that they they have great respect for Conor because they know no matter what's going on with Conor he's going to give 100% the guys I have around me I have a you know fthe senior as a center I have great uh guards and tackles I have a hman Canada as a running back I have uh great quick wide receivers I can get the ball to mace and deir uh you can just throw quick screens or 5 yard passes and they can make someone Miss and take it to the house potentially it's just creates excitement for our offense b one b two release go go go go go here we go three more inside hurry [Music] it is a and eating all that healthy stuff so yeah I work it off I work it off at practice man now what's the one thing with warn about that's on campus squirrels squirrel hey man we got the real squirrels in the Southeast here man they don't play like if you eating outside or something like that man they take your Foods your burger fries all kind of stuff anything they don't care they got a mind of their Bryce stadium has become one of the most dynamic home fields in all of college football Saturday in Columbia South Carolina means one thing and one thing [Music] only game day [Music] our fans are the best in the country in my opinion uh you see a molil gate and they're there 5 6 hours before the [Music] [Applause] game oh man it's like you be ready for a game but when you get out there and walk in [Applause] it's electric I mean the stadium is uh without a doubt one of the most energizing exciting Fields uh stages that you're ever going to step foot on cuz there's nothing like it nothing like playing you know for the University of South Carolina is definitely you know an extra ex set the pride for me you know being from the state just an hour away you know always supporting the Gamecocks and now I get to play for him it's just something this I'll cherish for the rest of my life keep itoll let's go the Gamecocks are competing at the highest level in their history under coach Steve sper hopes have never been H for bringing home a title to the state of South Carolina Spur's done a great job of and getting these young men to buy in and you know we want this program to be successful and I just the immediate future but for many many years to come well hopefully the expectations keep getting bigger and bigger but I want our players to love competing and love the game itself when that Ball's kicked off now this is the most fun
