the first college football game I ever witnessed from the sideline was 2001 LSU Tennessee the week after 9/11 because that that was the week and and LS should have won no no no no no no no this is 2001 oh this is this is Nick Sabin and um Josh Reed Rohan uh Michael Clayton caught his first touchdown that night my buddy Tommy Spinosa who's a high school friend of mine I had talked to him in years he ended up going to the University of Georgia and very successful his dad is the the developer that developed Perkins row and developed um we were just talking about cards and culture yeah is that Perkins row yeah he developed that and Sabin is a silent partner in that of course he is yeah they like there was a lawsuit on that yeah that came out a little bit name popped up in a lawsuit this is why so in 01 Spinosa and Sabin are tight like real tight and LSU Tennessee game 01 was like a a barro Thursday night let's roll let's go we jumped in a car in a suburban and drove to Knoxville I'm popping at herall at 4 a.m. looking at the Smoky Mountains way boys like pumping the fight song and my my buddy's dad Suburban we're eight deep I mean like everybody get this trip like we're here like like it turns into like one one of our childhood friends Chandler rice who is an Episcopal pole vter got a full ride to Tennessee as a pole vter we go and crash at his house and go to the game and Tommy Spinosa Jr is we're walking to the game is like hey no [ __ ] my dad just gave me two sideline passes and I'm like get the get out of here he's like him right here here he's like you want to roll I was like what bro was like bro going go brother and I'm tell if you find that game and watch it like I have that I'm all over it I'm standing at at one point I'm standing on the bench like we have no idea what we're doing like like I told Greg string fellow about this he's like I think I remember this yeah like I think I remember Satan being like who are these kids can I call a play like like there is a shot of them on the sideline and Sabin is like barking at the offense and the shot is like shooting back at the bench the back know no do we know we have no idea we have no idea on TV we're like in the back like smacking on Dum like looking around like get his ass like I mean I remember Michael Clayton coming to the sideline we're like hitting him like hitting him in the helmet I mean like yeah Mike yeah they can't guard you Mike on the sideline I mean like just having no clue no clue I'll never be back here like I mean I remember at halftime Tommy and I were like walking into like we're like thinking we can get to the they're like whoa bro they're like this is a bench pass brother you can't you're not on the team this is a bench pass you know like tell saber to run left what we thought about we're killing him on the left side maybe when we come out it was it was so like just crazy man but I don't even know how we got there oh yeah you still have the pass that's the first pass still have the pass yeah yeah make the coffee table story um all they have is the full game we well that's that's all you need if you I'm telling you I there's no chance that you don't see me 10 times in that thing CU we are in it bro I mean we are all in it got two siging plays were you on the I'm like yes she was like I swore we were like is that Jordan where is the [ __ ] are you I see you it was it was wild man it was wild awesome um all right so we've buried the lead uh LSU handed out the numbers yesterday and we were all talking as a staff they crushed it I I think they you know I mean I think this is all debatable stuff uh each year sometimes it's unanimous you know sometimes you got Tyra and Matthew come through here and you're like well you know it makes no sense not to give it to anybody else but him um leard forette coming in but having your linebackers line up and Greg pen be wearing number 18 and Harold Perkins lined up right next to him at wear and wearing number seven I think it's going to be some some pretty cool visuals to to bring to life for LSU football when you're talking about what those numbers have come to mean look some of it has lost its luster some of it may not be what it used to be but I mean look it's still something that the coach finds enough of a big deal to stop practice and hand out the numbers for and for for those guys to be you know in those numbers for their money season for this year both on defense I think it's really cool and then on the other side of the ball I you know I think everybody was kind of unanimous that Josh Williams was going to be 18 when we I was at the Zachary rot uh Rotary Club yesterday uh for the annual talk down there and had a a nightmare type situation where I had it plugged into my phone for next Thursday and they texted me at noon you on your way and I'm sitting at my desk at B noon oh in Zachary oh I'm in Bat I'm on I'm on I'm on in line I am at my work I'm at my office I'm at I'm at work and it was like that I'm waiting the alarm clock you know what I mean like it's cooked oh my God cuz it's usually every last It's usually the Thursday before the game right and I mean like what I've usually done is just kind of like make an annual deal like and like they even called last week and we're like we're good huh and I'm like oh yeah we're good this isn't for a couple weeks absolutely we're solid I mean I'll be there I appreciate yall being you know yeah I mean like the the the flight for Mr fun travel is not till like five I me it's all good you know what I mean I was like I'm I'm in where are you I was like where are you I was like oh what do you mean I mean b oh good next week see you next about 800 Well everybody's here yeah I as well do it today sweet all right um but I I haul ass out there and like I I I told the room I was like look Kelly said he's going to hand out the numbers here over the next couple of days I would be shocked if it's not Josh Williams I was like another candidate could be Greg Pinn yep you know and to see both of those guys where and now I never thought of Perkins in seven because I just thought that Campbell being in seven was kind of the the the end of that story but now to have Campbell and Perkins in seven with Josh Williams and Greg Pinn in 18 I think you you you hit it out the par I mean you know I think something that you could probably miss on you know I mean for every Jonathan Giles story you know out there that exist you know I mean there's there's some some swings and misses on this thing that have really kind of he probably lost the shine of of the brightness of it but I think you know potentially you could you could really kind of restore that this year I mean obviously Campbell wearing seven makes so much sense Perkins in seven is just I mean makes even more sense incredibly yeah right I mean sensible and then you know I don't think anybody would disagree with Josh Williams wearing 18 and to see Greg Pinn earn that number from like that 18 club's tough to break in Jacob Hester is a good friend of mine and I mean I I know it very seriously they they absolutely take it serious and and and they should I mean they they they they respect the program they you know the the way that it started was on the back of a national championship quarterback it was passed on to a national championship running back and and and since then it's been on captains and championship teams and you know big decisions within the squad that you know those guys take very very serious and you know I think from the the tradition of LSU football and for how we are passionate about it all the fans and people that cover it and you know have been watching watchingg it for so long I mean it it it may not be someone's favorite uh tradition that exists within the program but I think it's something that look those guys love and take serious and it's it's something that we all talk about and and and celebrate so um and I understand where it can kind of Get Lost in Translation with the it's always a question that feels like gets asked every year and that's where people I feel like get kind of tired of hearing about it in a sense like if you go on droppings whatever it's who's going to wear 18 this year and it's like I get it when you ask it like that but for like the actual people that involved that are involved in the decision making like 18's a huge deal and when you get it right which I feel like they've never really gotten 18 wrong but for number seven it turned into oh he's not him so don't you don't want to put that pressure on him or things like that in the Gile situation kind of put it in the [ __ ] but if you don't like it get the [ __ ] out your pants because this is a tradition that clearly the players care about and clearly the coaches have made a a point to do and it feels like it it's only right to see Perkins 7 this year because it is it just makes too much sense if you don't like it then don't tell me you didn't get a little excited when you saw it oh man you're like this this perfect and then you see Tyron Matthew saying like I've been waiting for weeks to tell everybody about this I mean even the seven Club you know I mean break when you got one of the presidents of of the seven Club speaking up and and and talking about you know what yeah right like that they've been waiting on this one you know does make a ton of sense and I look man I I expect Perkins to have a breakout s just a a stellar season I I really do I think that you know we talked about this earlier this week but I mean his Evolution his development to me is at the point where he bust out I mean he he was set to breakout last year and they had him in a in a scheme and a system and not on the field enough in the right spots to allow him to week in week out be a a headliner guy that every talking head every streaming show every wrapup show every scoreboard show every radio show throughout the week every podcast that talking college football is talking Harold Perkins that's the type of player he is that's who he is I mean you're you're talking about a player who when he was in high school he did everything at the highest level of Texas football and was the best player on the field every Friday night you know it's kind of like my Aaron Anderson Theory I was talking about Aaron Anderson yesterday Aaron Anderson when he was in high school at Carr he had 20 special teams touchdowns at the highest level of Louisiana High School football I don't care who you play when you play play how you play that is impressive moreover that to me translates to the SEC you know like if if you're returning kicks at that rate on Friday nights against Louisiana High School talent at the highest level man you're a big time SEC player potentially one well 20 is Not an Accident also you that's what I'm saying saying there's too much a habit you know I mean like that that's why I'm saying that's got to translate to me Harold Perkins pull up his high school highlight film I mean for his much five-star and revolutionary players that have come through this program through LSU's program his highlight film and high school stands out I would have recruited him as a running back a lot of people did he still can if they lose one this year don't think that they're probably discussing that he might get four or five carries I mean put him in the wild cat seven on both sides of the ball the wild perk but I just think from who Harold Perkins is it's tough to Wrangle Talent like it was difficult to make what happened to Harold Perkins happened last season really it's hard to take somebody with Elite Uber talent and keep them bottled up and not to say that he was cornered all season long you could see it but he didn't take that step that you thought here he comes like he's about to be a household name in college football fans for college football fans all over the country and I think that's this season for Perkins I I I really do I think Blake b it's it's it's a perfect storm of you get Baker back in Baton Rouge who Perkins out of everybody on the roster is probably the most comfortable with I mean you're talking about a guy who spent hours and hours and hours of his time in his living room on the phone with his high school coach at his high school meeting with him with his counselors with his teachers with his coaches with everybody he knows Harold Perkins on a personal level closer than he knows anyone on that team or as close as he knows anyone on that team he's great relationship Builder he's a great recruiter but you got to understand Baker was he was at a time where he didn't necessarily even know where he was supposed to be was he supposed to be at LSU working there was a lot of stuff in limbo with Baker he was still just showing up every day and recruiting this guy I think we had didn't we have Blake Baker on like a little like a little while before Signing Day or like they had just let him go or something and he he told us like he told Harold Perkins LSU is where you should be absolutely and now look three years later look he's his defensive coordinator that's what I'm saying it's a perfect storm for Perkins I mean really it's it's it's all coming together you know it's you've got you've got your defensive coordinator you've got guys like Kevin peoples and Jake olssen for a guy like Harold Perkins is fantastic like those guys are not that all of the rest of them aren't but those guys are like football coaches you know I mean like they're they're they are 247 all in to ball that's all they care about they're they're just worried about football and to have you know it's a lot like what we talked about last season to have a guy like Perkins when you've got minds of of guys like olssen peoples Baker on that side of the ball that are able to like say like what can we do with this guy you know like what's the possibilities that you can really you know what's the chances we can take from a defensive staff standpoint that's the type of stuff that I think is really going to elevate LSU from you know sub 100s to you know low 60s overnight is that you've got some creative minds back there thinking like all right look this is going to have to be with some smok and mirror but you got a guy like Perkins let's just put him in a situation where he can make the plays here I mean I think you look up Harold Perkins might have 15 17 20 tackle games really I mean you're just letting him fly he's protected up front he's protected you know where you can put him in space and let him run and get to the ball make plays I mean I I just think that Perkins in seven in his Junior season with Blake Baker as a defensive coordinator makes I like that is LSU football pornography I mean downloaded in bookmark it I mean every time I'm down I need a little bit of an upper perks in seven though right I'm erect you know I mean it's I think it just makes it makes a lot of sense and it's it's do you think that as as much as number seven is discussed and we maybe put too much stock in it maybe you don't do you think that this is kind of like make gives you even more confidence in what they're going to do with Harold Perkins because I don't think they would put him in this situation to fail well and and also I think even if you look deeper Perkins has had a couple of wins here in the off season that we haven't really talked about for them to take him to SEC media day for them to give him number not give him for him to earn number seven look man not that I've ever had any doubt about Harold Perkins not that I've had ever any concern about Perkins never have I had any just bad vibes about Perkins you know not having the team's best interest at heart I just think that that shows new staff on the defensive side coming in this guy is so bought in he's all in he's ready to to take that next step as a player so from LSU standpoint everything that they've seen from Perkins they are ready to reward him by taking him to SEC media Day by you know earning you know believing and voting that he's earned the right to wear number seven at LSU I mean that's a hell of a frat to be in you know included in but I mean you you stack him side by side that cat makes a lot of sense that he's in it so you know I mean I think the off season for Harold Perkins has been fantastic I'm about to be talking so much [ __ ] at work yeah you got a whole you be you be coming in on a cloud and I found out one of the seven one of the interns that I'm starting with next Tuesday georia guy Florida State oh we talked about graduate l so I have beef day one build the on air hate I have the beef day one absolutely and come in talking some Harold Perkins type [ __ ] I I I mean I told him in the interview they asked me who they asked me about Heisman candidates and I put Herold Perkins in there they were like oh you pumping LS sh for real number one number one offense in the country last year they got gotman Trophy winner from last year har per reload with the veteran quarterback yeah wait till I introduce you to to Aaron Anderson yeah wait till you see Trey as green right you know 14 is you 14 14 maybe yeah he's 14 wait till you see pimpon yes got some tricks on walk in there with that seven jersey perk on the back perk put it in a frame and just hang it up perk seven but to go with with that on Harold Perkins the way Brian Kelly spoke about him in the media the other day everything Brian Kelly does in the Press is very calculated and it's never he's never just blowing smoke so when he says that Harold Perkins has grown and is GNA Elevate the people around him he means it and that means he's seen it he's not going to say that without that being the real deal and so for him to follow that up with Harold Perkins earning number seven and getting that Jersey I think it just means that we're in store for something pretty special no I think so too man ex that's what I'm saying I don't think they would have done this if they didn't have the scheme kind of what they wanted and how they want to use Perkins figured out if it was going going to be a situation like we know what comes with the territory of being seven we talked about it for 30 minutes today and then you go well if it's not right if the situation isn't like if he's not going to live up to whatever quote unquote hype is given to him like that's on us so now it feels like the way that they're going to use Harald Perkins is because hey let's put this cat in seven and then see what he do see what he does because he's got it figured out defensively like Blake baker has his defense a little bit more aligned than we thought and so I think that's just kind of a test a testament to they may have cracked the code on how to use Perkins when it really wasn't that hard of a test to begin with but last year you just I mean you dropped you you dropped the test in the toilet and then you're like my dog ate my homework yeah that test is today oh I'm not at school damn dog get my homework it's only number 18 is is just as cool of a story I think Greg pin has been another one from an offseason standpoint that has has really had a fantastic offseason you know I mean just to kind of put it bluntly um you know I mean it seems like a guy who it's it's his time you know I mean he's he he's kind of been through it and like I said to have your linebackers in 18 and seven will be a cool visual for LSU fans when they line up um you know next week versus USC which is crazy uh to kind of think about um got to restart the in the blade Dynasty now running we're in year three we're running back to year one this guy why is he he's in 30 no perks yeah they don't have the numbers updated yet because it happened last night I'd imagine they will update the rosters at some point so you'll have perk and seven you can't change the numbers you can't change the numbers cuz that's the first thing I tried to do was put him in seven and they don't let you do it so I was like oh this game's ass but now with the roster they have to get the numbers right what's the return on it what on the game yeah I mean pain 10 out of 10 game frustration oh yeah so much fun it's a really good game like honestly like I've been playing Madden pretty much every year since they didn't have the game oh we talking Madden or we talking College I'm saying like I've been playing Madden every year since they didn't have the college football game but now that they have the college football game I thought it was going to be like a lot of people thought it was going to be kind of a Madden reskin and I kind of thought it was going to be the same thing but it's far from Madden like it's 10 times better than Madden but it's also a riot like it's college football like yeah it gives you those college football Vibes and you the game is not over till there's zero seconds on that clock you think you're up you could be up 14 with a minute 30 left and you're like two touchdowns six you're like oh I shouldn't be throwing the ball at all three and out punt return you're like oh we're in [ __ ] God we're in trouble boys start sitting up and staring at the screen you're like oh I need to time out you're just like all right get it together 35 seconds for the rest Georgia with LSU other so you like playing the computer or you playing playing the computer I don't play other people play other people but cheesing I've been playing Road to Glory play Georgia the other day gave up 10 sex oh God coach offensive line offensive line struggling but Georgia is like it's insane how overpowered some of the teams on the game is though so yeah it it does get very hairy on the college football if you put that thing on Heisman you get ready I'm playing on Heisman me too and it'll just some things will happen where you're like this is fake the interception you know you're like I I know what you're all are doing and I'm going to restart this [ __ ] game like you're not going to get I probably simulated Georgia in the SEC Championship 20 times didn't play it simulated lost 20 straight times wow and I was like all right I'll play him naturally I lost and I was like this must be after I restarted 10 times it must be what's supposed to happen WR the it was I lost to Georgia the SEC Championship made the playoff had a home playoff game with LSU mhm with Boise State I played Boise State at Tiger Stadium I was like this is why they did it I didn't have a buy it was a fist seed and so I got to play at night in Tiger stadium the first college football playoff game and it was a drumming soaked it all in I do I do hold the ball too long sometimes but but it's because like little therapist yeah little therapy but it's because I'm looking at the defense like I'm I'm not even looking at the dline coach I'm looking at the like the defensive backs and the linebackers and I'm just like damn he's not open second read ain't open and then like once I go to look to my third read it's coach we moved on to the next question we we understand that you gave up to 10 sacks I do be on on the ball just address the offensive line Monday we get it is struggling we get it you may want to look for a new coach's like you know what it might not be the offensive the I was 15 seconds ago like D at least play it at least play it honest there you go that's awesome dude yeah find your hot if you don't cooked sometimes it'll be sitting in that zone you think the hot's the hot it's not they jump it but oh they'll jump everything everything if you try to throw it over the middle you got brass balls should be with you know the twos threes mostly with the threes mix in with the twos here's and there but I mean he looks great he's made some great catches he looks like Shelton Samson all potential all the potential in the world but I think it was pretty telling whenever Chris Hilton was out at practice was it yesterday two days ago two days ago that Kyle Parker was the next one up it wasn't Shelton Samson I don't know if that's more of like a fit for what Kyle Parker does in the offense more or if it was Hey cuz well I think we all saw KP in the offseason where it was like this man's grinding and so he's always been like in the lab working hasn't said a hasn't said a ton about not playing but he gets he gets the opportunity to run with the on and he had a day like he was probably the most impressive of the group that day him and Aaron and Aaron Anderson and then nus had his probably best practice of camp that day so it was a great day for the offense but it's cool to see if you're Chris Hilton I know that been much has been made of this year especially by him yeah to be like this is where I need to stand out like I'm not just a one Pony but he can't stay healthy and if you're being held out of this the practice on Wednesday now you get to Friday and you're looking at Saturday the scrimmage in Tiger stadium if I'm Chris I'm doing everything I can to play that game or play that scrimmage because there's a lot of talent in that room that you're like damn give up a couple of reps right and they don't next thing you know you're fifth on the depth chart right you're just like what happened yeah cuz Kyle Parker is somebody that he was every rep he was like running to the goal on a finishing it out and you're like okay he obviously knows that this is this is my time to make a statement yeah and he did he played like had a great practice KY Parker's always been that guy that you know is like sneaky you got Parker there solid you know like I mean well remember when during his recruitment Shay was huge on Kyle Parker he's like he's the one that transitions probably the most in that room from high school to college where he's like his body is like college ready now he's a red trip freshman with a year in college and if there's a person to break out in Hilton's absence if it lingers that might be your guy and he never really kind of wavered in recruiting you know I mean he was always locked into LSU uh boys we got football in 24 hours just about 24 hours and a nice day tomorrow I mean look you know it's not obviously this is nothing that you it's not your mother's week zero absolutely I mean you know after a six seven month Hiatus I'll take this I mean like I'll take a little SMU in the evening and some flid St Georgia Tech this is week six I would not be as excited but week zero there's some games on the docket uh including the the the headliner and the first one and that will be a 1100 a.m. kickoff in Dublin from Dublin Ireland uh between Florida State and Georgia Tech this game has now dipped under uh the 12-point number that I believe it opened at and sits right now at 10 and a half uh the over under on this thing is about 55 and a half and this is a big this is kind of a spot for Florida State it is because I mean the offseason for Florida state has not been kind right they have tried to really make sure that everybody knows that they got screwed last year and left out of the playoff and it's one thing that in the moment when everybody realized like man The Undefeated ACC champ just got left out of a four team playoff that has to hurt and everybody around college football saw and was almost um you know they sided with Florida State you know I mean there was a lot of people who saw Florida State side I mean it was an easy you know look what else can you do you know you lose Jordan Travis in the last game of the season and that's where it all comes down to what we talk about it's a television show you know I mean like I we 12 team playoff it's a television show I think that favors LSU if LSU is on the fence if LSU is on the line there's people behind the door saying hey look we know LSU is going to watch and and move the numbers we know that LSU is going to travel and buy hotel rooms and we know LSU is going to drink everything in sight when they get there and spend money and buy tickets you might want to put them in or you go the other rout and like this is why we need a 16 team playoff and you leave a fan base out like LSU that would absolutely Riot and you're like well this is why we got to expand that's what they did with Georgia and Florida State last year like if you don't if you don't think it's a TV show look at how they ended it last year this why we need Geor George is the other great example of last year like hey there's more spots you got sabotaged because this thing's expanding and we're going to use you as the example for the expansion for as long as it stays at 12 what do you want us to do leave a on loss Georgia team out of the out of the national championship because they lost in the SEC title game you're like well no you know just as much as I do that they shouldn't have been left out right they had probably the best roster in college football they're the defending national champion they kind of showed you when they played Florida State well I mean I you was a little bit flid want to be Florida state had the JV team there cool but nor I agree let's make that's why to me this is a big spot for Florida State because you had an opportunity to kind of be the you know kind of make up some some ground of look everybody saw it but then they they rode that wave for so long of well we got left out we got screwed they wanted to take people I saw DJ U was invited not invited but he was going to be taken from Florida State to SEC media day and he came out and said that he didn't want to go because he wanted from you know he thought it was only fair that somebody from last season's team went and represented Florida State and it's like yo look it's over yeah you know I mean like last season is over and Florida state is a different team now look this defense is going to be tough they might have the deepest defensive line in the country talking about Florida State yeah yeah they got some they got some dudes on defense some players well they have I think they 18 freshman listed on the two deep like they lost they lost a good a good chunk of talent they lost a lot but defensively they they returned some dudes they lost their experience but they they do have talent I do not believe at all in dju he hadn't shown it I don't I don't think that DJ exactly who numbers are what do you think his career completion percentage is 56 I would say it's I was going to say sub 50 59.1 okay how many how many touch touch Downs touchdown interceptions uh I know he threw I just pulled it up not looking at the screen but was it 21 and7 last year or yeah where was he at Oregon State y yeah did you see him play nope cuz he didn't matter and was really move the needle enough because he's not good enough to be able to carry a team and you saw his best game was when he was a freshman at Clemson when he came in like Off the Bench against Notre Dame and then that's where all this hype came from cuz he was a five-star he comes in and like carries I think Notre David beat Clemson but Clemson was like punch for- punch he threw for like 500 yard and five touchdowns like oh he's the next one up yeah and then it never really nothing's ever really happened since and he's serviceable he's fine like would you take 2600 yards 21 touchdowns seven picks for nus this year uh you'd be like uh I'd be like yeah LSU didn't make the playoff probably unless you ran for 2,000 yards and what's really tell is Oregon State's coach left Oregon State and went to Michigan State and he didn't take dju with him he took the other quarterback oh wow so oh tells you how he feels about a guy it's a little telling that is telling um would you be surprised if they win that game tomorrow and the first thing they say in like the postgame press or the postgame interview is something in regards to last season yes no it would not surprised I wouldn't be surprised at all I would not be surprised Mike nor is probably like planning I think 100% that that's probably I I can't I I I I can't believe they're handling it like this they shouldn't be I mean I can't believe that there's not somebody either around them or that is just on that staff that's like fellas this is not the right way to do this I mean like we've got to flush last season I mean like this is a totally different team I just I think it's a big spot for Florida State I think that the ACC for as irrelevant as they they feel they they've got some interesting story Lines within it I mean you know I think Clemson Miami Florida State I mean you you know I mean you're bringing a team like SMU in yeah I mean I think that SMU is a is kind of a Dark Horse to watch they play tomorrow as well um they play tomorrow night at 7 o'clock um who is this SMU plays NE they played at Nevada oh that's a fun game um some t to you have to check that I mean smu's favored by 25 in that game wow take that what they do last year well they were pretty good pretty good I think they went like 10 and two I mean red Lashley yes I mean they've def they have deferred payment for the first three years that they have been in the ACC to kind of do them like a solid of saying like invest into the conference you're the rich uncle and like let yes absolutely like 11 three last year telling you coach I'm like SMU I mean that's in Dallas Houston how badly do they want to be in a Big Time conference also they were like you don't have to pay us badly I mean like pay you they're in the ACC Now look up the 30 for30 Pony Express they're doing exactly what they were doing in the 80s now it's legal they're just replaying the The Playbook and it's all legal and I mean SMU was they were like the preseason number two team in the country Eric Dickerson Eric Dickerson Craig James I mean they had it was a canal and you're you're sitting in a big market right s in a fertile recruiting State you're fertile recruiting City fertile recruiting City I mean it's it makes too much it's a lot like Houston did you see former LSU Athletics director former LSU associate Athletics director Eddie Nunes spent some time at New Mexico State over the last couple of years just got the ad job at Houston that's a great gig man like that is a great gig in today's climate of coll of Collegiate Sports where you're in a huge Market a incredible alumni a rich untapped alumni yeah I mean they're not talking weed when they're talking grams don't bring that to the party teams like teams like SMU teams like Houston I think I think T Lane could be in that mix where you're sitting in a you're sitting in the same type of thing as Dallas you're sitting in a recruiting and one thing that Willie Fritz did who's now the head coach at Houston and and and went to Houston because he got some you know he got some they didn't they didn't come through on some promises that he was told was going to happen what what one thing that Fritz did to tulan is he made it more friendly on the student athlete to get admission into tane you know like he's he's for a while there tane couldn't really get a lot of the the talent that was you know sitting right under their nose because of the difficulty it was to get you know admitted into into tane really but but now there is programs and opportunities for um you know student athletes that that that it makes it a a job that you have to pay attention to I mean it's like you know like two-lane success over the last Four Seasons kind of speaks for itself but I mean that's that's what it a team like SMU a team like tlane a team like Houston sitting in these recruiting fertile cities and places with alumni bases that have a ton of money that see an opportunity to get their team back into relevancy within college football you know I mean those are the types of teams that I think will kind of change the way we look at foot you know it becomes more of a a holistic game right where it's not just you know LSU Georgia Ohio State Michigan and Alabama from experience tand is a great place to recruit and play at moving on up in the world great place but if you're it feels like Florida state is getting because of how the playoff is being shaped where you have to have a like you're picking a conference winner right for the playoff spots and it feels like everybody's kind of gone well Florida state will win the ACC with no real backing as to why it's just like that's the name that you remember from last year somebody has to win the conference and then you end up on Florida State who's ranked 10 in the country like Oh They'll probably be in the playoff like they keep getting picked in these these scenarios yeah but like it's almost like who else I don't know if Florida state is is that much of a that far ahead of everybody else in the ACC no but they're the consensus pick it feels like you'll find out I think Miami's got a better roster yeah and don't sleep on Dabo I'm not sleeping on Clemson sleep got a good roster too yeah that's probably behind LSU USC the Clemson Georgia game next weekend's got my attention more than more I still think George is probably beat no I think George but I want to see how they compete yeah no I don't I'm not saying that Clemson's gonna win the game I want to see where Clemson STS Stacks up against the best it's going to be a good measuring like that's a great place to say okay you want to see how far Clemson beh is behind if they are if they are behind Deb's going to have them boys already I he's going to be talking all is the game in Atlanta I think so yeah the game's in at oh so it's like that that shares that sentiment of oh definitely like I the reason I've liked college football more than the NFLs only because obviously LSU but every Saturday was live or die like your season can end in week five and now it feels like oh you got you know and I know that wasn't the best for LSU in terms of like you want to see them at the end of the year but it was still so much fun every Saturday where you walked into the stadium you're like got to strap it up and now it feels like there's some buffers built in but for LSU and USC like you might be in that scenario again if you drop week one where you're like all right buckle up you don't have any more really any more outs so that's why I still think that this LSU USC for or LSU in week one for the fifth straight year is massive for what they want to do in the entire for the rest of the season but this is the list wow this is great radio that is that is surprising to see Ohio State third on that list yeah to think to for people to think I know this is kind of like blasphemy but I mean to just say out loud of Alabama being first right you know I mean I think you you take Caleb DS off of a roster and put on and you add him to another college football roster I mean but h I mean how do they what how do they how was this measured I'm guessing by recruiting rankings by recruiting yeah and stars star like Old Miss at 20 right Campbell and Perkins oh absolutely absolutely 100% no doubt I mean I'm trying to think of of anybody that would would would get in that I mean maybe nus me I guess importance um but if you're just talking if we're just breaking down Talent if we're just saying like one through 105 going down the list I'm I'm giving you you know like who's the most talented on LSU's roster I think will Campbell's number one I think Harold Perkins is number two yeah I'd say Emory Jones is probably number three on that list four I'd probably go like there's some young cats that I'd probably put up there at four well if you're Trucking like not production related strictly Talent like green Aaron Anderson where you're like I know what's in there like Chris Hilton probably is on that list of just she athlete yeah that's what you put Will Campbell and perk one and two 1 a 1B because they've had they've done both you have production and you can see the talent is insurmountable yeah and so I think when you have those Guy Greg Penn's on that list he's high up on that list you know what I mean if if you're talking solid guy if you're talking that yeah but I mean I think beyond that I think he's set to to bust Deone Clark year yeah kind of a demone Clark year and I think there's more of a what we talked about with Perkins of Blake Baker kind of the one calling the shots makes a lot of sense for for Greg Penn to have that type of season so um you know I mean when you've got Perkins and Campbell in seven and you got Greg pen and 18 and we hadn't talked about Josh Williams because I think that's just kind of who Josh Williams is I mean he's just a you don't take him for granted you know God forbid you don't take him for granted at all because of everything that he does for the team everything he does for the offense everything he does for special team I mean he just does so much to make the team function but it's like you just come to expect that he's going to be there he's going to do his job he's going to be solid on time he's not going to be a problem you know I mean I don't mean a problem in the sense of anything he's Dependable yeah it's just even like from an injury standpoint you know what I mean like he's he's available you know I mean it's just I think he's as solid and as comfortable and confident of a player that LSU has and for those four guys to be representing this year's team with you know those signs of what what really kind of matters to the program number 18 number seven I think it's a like we said at the beginning of the hour the beginning of the show for for something that's could be year in year out debatable you know you feel like you could go back and boy this guy should have warned or he should have got he deserves I feel like they got it all right M you know like I mean like it's the right people's hands was you saying that have you ever felt like they've given it out to the wrong person well it felt like it it felt like it became a thing that you had to do every year and now with it being Will Campbell having the patch it feel like it's been shelf a little bit and now you bring it bring the number back for Harold Perkins where it's like okay this feels like the right time to do it it doesn't have to be an every year thing and O kind of made it an every year thing where you're giving it out somebody has to wear Southern no he didn't go tother he didn't go I think he went to I went fam FAMU and then there was another like and then Texas something I I don't know she went to a Texas school and then he never played there then he hit the portal again and went to Colorado just a lot going Curious Case yeah wonder how how's Quincy doing in third on the depth chart that Colorado put out I just got him from the portal Dallas year he looks good though I mean that's looks good in the uniform I hated to see that and I I I'd imagine that he's going to play a lot of football there but it feels like kind of a walker Howard situation where he transfer it out to do the same thing and and look man I'm sure this the the sights and fall and older is a lot cooler than it is in Baton Rouge yeah I was going through some old clips and found a clip of Ricky Collins making Quincy Miss in a that Madison prep game at that Madison prep wood long game it was my first game Co first time covering a game of any type I mean it you know that's where I met you at Jordan that's right that was that that was was that the game we were doing for the Zachary um no that was that was the year before that year okay it was the year before that 2021 uh but yeah I mean Quincy wigin still I mean tough for him to crack the college football the rotation you know and get on the field you know I mean LSU could use him you know I don't know how I just don't know how ready he is when you talk to coaches around LSU I mean it's it's one thing to look the part it's also one thing to start really playing football when he left LSU he' only been playing for four years three years you know and I mean when when you're playing something your entire life and you show up with somebody that is you know you show up to LSU 99.9% of the locker room has been playing football their entire life I mean since they've been four or five years old and not only that they've been the best player on their team since they've probably been 12 10 11 12 you know probably earlier than that I mean it's it's pretty easy to see like oh that you know that that guy's a dude you know like Lil Jay and them scrimmaged the other night and Brandon balon's son was on the other sideline Brandon Balton who went to scotlandville played 12 years in the NFL won three rings with the Patriots played at Old Miss for a long time I mean solid NFL running back you know I mean if you would have saw Brandon balt standing on the sidelines and you walked out and watch the scrimmage it would have taken you two seconds to say oh that's probably his son yeah you know what I mean like I mean he just looks a little different than everybody out there right I mean these guys show and then you know like they all show up to a locker room for Brandon Balden it was at Old Brandon Balton was just like that at scotlandville I mean he was a he was a stud at scotlandville I think he was just called like a recruiting cycle that was very I think it was like a weird year no I don't I think it was just so populated you know it's kind of like you got to take one I mean somebody's going to get left out right um I say it was Ojon who recruited Balden to miss and Frank Wilson might have been the running back's coach um came down here to Baton rots that's one thing I'm excited about are running backs this year yeah no doubt they I mean they say they're going to be a force well you get to watch the scrimage Saturday easy Stewie easy easy easy I'm just saying she she's she's in Easy don't let him know who the plan is I don't think she's going to hide in plan sight with that shirt on please don't wear that I'm not I'm not y I am not sneaking in like I'm not we know we know we know just watch the phone watch the phone um but just you know like it's got to be very humbling to walk into a locker room where everybody the for the majority is an alpha you know what I mean like everybody's the dude everybody's been the guy everybody was the Big Man on Campus in high school right and then you get into a locker room with you know you come in with 25 27 other guys if you're a recruit and then you step into a locker room where everybody's older than you and they feel the same way and they've been doing it for longer it's a I mean you know like there's a lot of things that you don't take into what they have to go through mentally and I think Quincy Wiggins is probably a guy over the last three years if he probably wonders should I have stuck with basketball you know like I mean I'm I'm you're all the ones that told me to play football like you got me going up against Will Campbell and Emory Jones every day these cats are going to be too you know they can come off the draft board top 10 and you know I'm just learning how to get into a stance really you know I mean I'm just really learning how to snap my chin strap I mean really I mean it's it's a and he came to LSU at a time when he wasn't probably getting the the amount of attention required to be like essentially a startup well look what's happened to that room since he got here they've had three coaches that's what I'm saying so we never got the mean he never got the attention yeah he never got to Hon's craft really and then I that's why is it war in sap at Colorado isn't that there like that's somebody that also I don't know if that's the best fit because it's his first fora really into coaching and so you don't have any of that veteran experience everywhere you've turned it's been like there's nobody here to really help me and that's what he's like y'all told me to play football and I was pretty good at basketball and you take that it's not really his first love so if you don't have the passion to do it and now you don't have the help to do it it just kind of becomes what is happening right now where you're like just a I don't know if I'll ever put it together just a guy yeah just become a guy but you have to to have mental toughness right you're I mean you have to have mental toughness like so what if this if they've been doing it what are you going to do you know what I mean if you have to if you have to get out there if you have to run routes if you have to put extra time in that's what you have to do it's a they're not going to give it to you you have to earn it it's a losing art in in just understanding that I think the transfer portal allows that but I am you know look man I I I referenced this a little bit but you know just kind of helping out with Jordan's football team just out of necessity just needing an extra arm at practice and being around and just kind of you know picking up cones after practice and giving them another body out there it is a Frontline seat of man the future of the of of football is it's just it's it's evaporating and it's evaporating from the dinner table at home with the parents I mean we had we had a a kid crying to his dad tears to his dad I want to play I want to play football I want to play okay and this guy is a this kid is a you know would be a standout player would be a a high-end player and but his his parents won't allow him to play football it's it's one of the it's one of the craziest things parents I have ever seen and then the the the dad explained to me that he wants him to play football next season but he wants him to to get stronger this is eighth grade I said Dad that's a terrible idea I said dad dad he's going to quit the first walk into the locker room and there's not going to this team has 25 kids on it mm so on the 25 kid team he's probably the second best player wow thir best player on the team you know what I mean like same thing we doing practicing he had he had practiced but they decided to pull the plug a week ago and the the kid is what they worried about getting hurt C getting hurt over over overexposing him like you know using him too much um they want to get him ready for they want to get him ready for fall ball baseball they want they want him to get bigger stronger faster I mean it was like coach the amount of people that walked into that were like I want to play football and didn't play in junior high and they show up in nth grade they're let play next year see very often I remember doing two days in six grade on a Saturday this is normal where kids in their eighth grade year were playing take the confidence that I step into the locker room and like oh I played against him yeah like I got him last year now I'm walking into the locker room where I quit mhm halfway through it because my dad didn't want me to get hurt like that's what he's telling me so he's halfway through and he made him quit well that means halfway through training camp wow me the game you know the the first scrimmage of the season was two nights ago I mean he quit last week wow I mean there was three weeks of practice that have already you know happened it going to be hard to shed that label coach I told him you know look man you got to walk that fine line at somebody else's kid yeah for sure you know what I mean like it's hey man I just at some point I know if if if my dad would have said to me and I'm tearfully saying I want to do this what position does he play let me do this he'd probably play like DB DB and wide receiver he he'd probably catch I'm not being concerned he'd probably catch 12 touchdowns this year wow I mean really in true he'd be like the leading score on the team so he doesn't play a position where he'd be like banging heads or like not all at all at all I mean depending on the r with wide receiver yeah you get cracked you can get you can get cra football exactly that's what I'm saying now you're showing up to nth grade where there's 12th graders and like I haven't played contact yet like I haven't been hit and he's 17 exactly right and he like oh you're the kid that quit like run him over the middle what what age do y'all recommend for for tackle I started playing tackle at eight I would yeah I would start playing like fourth grade I mean fourth fifth grade first grade is just on what 10 he he will be in December he wants to play tackle so bad so I'm just trying to he's in fourth right now oh yeah get him going yeah I mean next year he's play flag he huh in fifth grade see I kind of like I kind of like to to to start them cuz they cut them down at like third fourth fifth sixth seventh eighth okay so and I'm not telling you that it doesn't work either way but when you slide him in as a fifth grader there's going to be sixth graders on that field that are yeah well he's already I mean grade and there there there's some there's some kids that are in seventh grade seventh and eighth grade team that I'm involved with that they they're the standout players yeah you know what I mean it happens yeah but just evolute the way that it works you know what I mean is you know just something to yeah I will all right we're going to take a quick big time yeah no you're going to you're going to see similarities to the the the growth from Pini to you know whatever else cuz like the Deone Clark I think is one of the biggest representations of what he looked like in that Pini defense in 2020 where he was like lost yeah like I don't think his stats were much different from 19 to 20 and in 19 he was like a package guy 20 he was on the field the whole time and then 21 he was and then 21 he should have won the butt a you know and I think that's what you're going to see similarly with for sure Perkins pen I think even the weak Brothers in a sense of that growth but I think pen definitely but Perkins more than anything you're going to see that jump because I mean when you look at his stats from last season they weren't that bad they weren bad he had played more so you were expecting a bigger jump yeah and he he just kind of did the same thing he did the year before that's why people were like oh like his stats don't jump out but he kind of just mirrored his 2022 stats yeah I think he had three fewer sacks and that was the only difference but that was literally the Arkansas game his freshman year where he won himself as a sophomore had 50 total tackles four for loss three and a half or sacks his sophomore year or junior year in 2020 63 tackles so only went up 13 from being a package guy to every down backer but then in 20121 is senior season insert Blake Baker insert Blake Baker he had 135 total tackles 15 and a half for loss five and a half sacks an interception and two Force fumbles I mean if perk puts up those numbers that's a unbelievable win he'll go top 10 cuz right now he's projected like I think it was I think the last mock I saw was 16 overall to the Texans which I mean if I was him I wouldn't mind falling to that team because you got veteran a machine right and you got veteran defensive players that can help you transition as a pro you got a bunch of LSU guys yeah like it it just be a great fit for him you're going to win and yeah and you're going to win and you got a defensive minded head coach that like cares about Ryan would perin har Perkins but Perkins stats freshman year he had 72 total tackles 13 for loss 7 and a half sacks a pick four Force fumbles sophomore year 75 total tackles so only up three 13 tackles for loss same number five and a half sacks two less same number of picks three Force fumbles one less so it act it's fairly similar but if he jumps if he doubles that total tackle number kind of like Deone did and gets to 120 total tackle that's why he's in number seven you know I think Greg pen hit the 100 tackles I do too yeah both be everywhere yeah and like Jordy was talking about Harold Perkins having those games where he has 18 and 20 tackles I don't see that I don't see that but I see Greg pin having those type of games cuz he's like he is that true like Mike linebacker like he moving from the middle yeah I a I ain't moving around Le you hadn't had that in a while I think if you have I don't think perk will have the like 15 to 20 tackle game games but you'll have a game where he has 12 and three for loss right two sa yes that's what I'm saying like he's going to flash again which I think that's what LSU fans want the most is utilize him because it's a there's a sense of a almost like a cautionary tale especially going to the NFL where like Davon Austin just retired like if he would have gone to if he'd have been in the league in 2024 like he would have been a stud in the NFL would been a to yeah like been a top five Pi but they didn't know how the it didn't translate same thing with uh I think he went six to say he was he went high in the dra yeah you did because what he did in college was undeniable L but like now he's like put that next step in the league is you got to know how to use him and that's what I think you'll see this year with Blake Baker probably is like I'm taking that job because he's there in a sense like I can make him go and it couldn't have worked out better for Blake Baker because first of all he loves the school his wife went here and then you get the opportunity to come back to LSU when expectations for the defense are like just make it a little bit better and so he doesn't have right and so it's always it's it's a net win already as long as they're not as bad as they were last year like you you might not see like a Monumental increase if you do he's going to get another raise but if it's just serviceable you're like all right build on that Blake Baker then the expectation will come but right now I think if you don't [ __ ] up the like the perk situation you're good they gave him a Ferrari yeah but mad house just didn't know how to drive didn't know how to drive clutch yeah
