[Music] yo what's Shing everybody it is an overreaction Monday show right here on orange Bloods live I'm Jeff Ketchum no on Richardson today no he's not on vacation no he's not out of the country no he's just down at UT practice starting right now uh the Longhorns are in pads on this Monday uh the pads come on today the school giving the media a little bit of availability so it's just a little little me today on the overreaction Monday show which means I'm gonna have hot takes it means we'll be talking a lot about Texas football practice uh it means I'll have all of the hot takes actually uh although there's room in the specs chat come on in the water's warm get your questions in um it's a good day to just ask me anything football related we'll put them up on the screen we'll take your questions of course we'll take your super chats uh the the main focus throughout most of the show today though on University of Texas football practices they took a break yesterday but went Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday and today they go full pads so there's a lot to talk about as always I want to give a shout out to the guys over at Rogue shop shop um do you have anxiety do you have pain in in your joints and your muscles are you having a hard time sleeping do you just want to take the edge off they've got a little bit of everything for everybody uh go to Rog shop.com and basically do your shopping make your life a little bit better they are longtime partners of orangebloods.com I am a user and believer in the products and uh let's get started uh again PR practice uh going on as we speak so I will be keeping an eye out for anything in the next hour that comes out in the way of practice notes and tidbits I'll do I'll check my teams I'll I'll do the occasional uh Refresh on on Twitter I'll be on orange Bloods I'll do all of the things uh to make sure uh that if anything happens today that's newsworthy that we absolutely talk about it uh let's see real quick Justin I we can always take recruiting questions I guess Justin wants to know what's up uh the latest on recruiting as a whole uh Justin we're about to see some action this week Kik Lockett borderline five star wide receiver he announces his decision on Wednesday literally at noon so when we're doing the house divided show at Chad Hastings that day it'll essentially be khik Lockett day DJ Sanders the defensive tackle out of Belleville is going to be announcing his decision this week uh obviously August is going to be a very busy month but it would not be a surprise at all to see the Longhorns kind of kick kick off some instate recruiting with a couple of big wins uh the biggest being khik Lockett this week in recruiting that's what's that's the latest in general I think the long horns are very confident in Michael fusi I think the Longhorns are confident still with Jamie French although that that's a recruitment that's going to be hard to completely wrap your hands around uh all the way up through December the question is where do they where do things stand with Jonah Williams you know they're going to get an official visit they seem to have made some Headway there I think that may be the one as much as any where there's a little bit of real inry in terms of what happens next in that recruitment uh money what's up money happy Monday to you uh no Brandon onard didn't go on vacation uh as much as he just took a few days off he was off on I guess Friday um Saturday he's back at work today if not for the long horns making a media availability open literally at 900 am this morning uh he'd be on the show right here with me all right so look um by the way Vivic okay the show just starting off non-stop uh interaction uh R your piece on orange Bloods I think it's nuts that some Texas staff think this is going to be a historic class laugh my ass off we have a lot to make up for Vivic I feel you and I have to admit of all of the the commentary I've received from sourcing in the last week or so the suggestion that this could be a historic class was one that I kind of rolled my eyes at a little bit as well I mean you know if we can be completely honest right however stay with me here if they start things off with khik Lockett and then and these are all big ifs big ifs they start with khik Lockett they land Michael fusi right if fusi is not in this class then the goals and objectives weren't hit but let's say they hit fusi and then they hit Michael Terry if we stop right there that's three super blue chips and depending on the ranking service some have Michael Terry as a five star uh some have K Lockett as a five star everybody has Michael fusi as a five star there's three now if you added French that's potentially a four five star if you if if again if we're how what's the pathway to Historic you get Jonah Williams who's going to all announce his decision later this month but that recruitment also could go on later in the year now you're talking five and then it comes down to who you can flip from there can you find a way to flip Riley pettan keep in mind that when the Longhorns originally went after Petty Jean I had been hearing that the Longhorns had the best nil situation on the table can it be improved can it be improved enough to change the Dynamics of that recruitment we'll see I continue to be told that people are confident about the uncommitted they're confident about a couple of flips that they expect to take place and Josiah Sharma not even including that one which has already taken place and there's already a lot of excitement about what might happen in the transfer market it's a new age in college football there are guys that haven't taken snaps yet as college football players who already have agents and lawyers and representation putting feelers out I put this in the War Room on orangebloods.com by the way um last day to take advantage of that free offer two free months at orangebloods.com as a matter of fact let me just put that up while I talk for a second so that you guys have access to it um I had this in a war room on Friday night and you know what Vivic let me take that down even though I was talking to you um what hold on let me just do that there we go 60-day free trial so on the Thursday night in the War Room this is kind of wild and I don't think anything's gonna happen but I think it absolutely this is the kind of stuff you can get over at orangebloods.com and it and I think it really Paints the picture for where we're headed in college football in the next five six months once the 2024 season is over with I was talking to an Alabama source of mine on Thursday and they had immediately noticed oh man so uh Isaiah Bond got that Lambo deal huh and I was like well yeah I I yeah it happened that happened it had happened earlier in the day and Alabama people had already seen that this person who I was talking to knows Ryan Williams uh the five star former five-star top five Prospect in last year's recruiting class uh he had he he' known Ryan Williams for a while long time and he said he wouldn't be surprised if Ryan Williams after season one at Alabama this year might enter the portal to just find out what his street value is what is Ryan Williams worth one season into college the only way you truly find out is if you put your name into the portal and this person was saying wouldn't be a shock to see if the Longhorns are a school that he looks towards because anybody with eyeballs can see that it worked for Adan I Mitchell it's working for Isaiah Bond who is one of two Longhorns represented with a l bo uh nil deal at this point the nation is watching players are watching agents are watching Vivic is it is it unlikely that the Longhorns finish with a historic recruiting class probably probably however if they have a big time August you combine that with Lance arm Lance Armstrong I've got my column on the brain uh Lance Jackson KJ Lacy suddenly you're up to seven eight super Blue Chips if you just sweep the board in August then if you flip a couple of guys and suddenly you're at nine or 10 super blue chips in a single class it's pretty historic you you'd be competing for the number one recruiting class in the country if you could get to that level now look as things stand you can't really include KJ lazy is a super Blue Chip we know that one of the reasons why khik Lockett is so important is because he will he would in theory Kickstart this run of Mega prospects that the Longhorns need to have in this class that they don't have in it thus far uh but yeah I I feel you Vivic but that there's a pathway that people behind the scenes feel absolutely exists you know I'm going to report what I'm being told I don't know that you and I don't have to agree with everything that sources tell us uh behind the scenes but it speaks to the confidence I think the growing confidence I think that exists uh in where recruiting people at Texas think is going starting this month starting in a couple of days uh money B hit that Thumbs Up Button you're right thank you sorry I'm like Manning the controls and pushing buttons and if you just make a little bit of mistake suddenly uh it doesn't work out for you I'm just hoping my internet doesn't crash while I'm flying solo right now uh but yes as money be says hit that like button I would appreciate it if I'm being completely honest uh okay let's talk practice for a little bit I'll go back to recruiting look I'm a man of the people and every time I say people on this show I very close to Drifting into bad Bill Cosby impersonation and talking about the people um I'll answer you your questions but let's talk a little bit about Texas football practice they are through four practices let's talk some standouts let's talk some un unanswered questions uh and then let's outline just what's at stake this week I think for everybody on the team uh let's start with the last thing first this is a huge week for Texas football the coaches outlined last week Steve sarkeesian talked about it when they get to this Saturday so five days from now they're going to have their first big Mega scrimmage call it the show me scrimmage if you're a player on this roster and you want to have a role on this team in games this season you need to do it by Saturday you need to do it through Saturday this is a huge week because after Saturday according to Steve me this is not a subjective take on my part this is his outlining what what they think they're going to do coming out of the Saturday scrimmage in five days sarkeesian feels like they're going to be able at that point to put together a tenative three deep which they kind of have already but this is how you make your moves how do you CL you climb the depth chart you you you you make impressive performances and things like scrimmages so they'll go out a Saturday with a tentative three deep and then the next week and going through that next scrimmage on the Saturday that follows so 12 days from now after that the two deep will pretty much be set in stone it's a little bit of a different set of Dynamics I think than we've seen in previous camps where a lot of times although it's almost unofficially like locked in you'll see the battles go all the way until the last week before training camp the week before the first game is when they really traditionally start focusing on the first game and and the depth chart is set sarkeesian headed that this this year they think they're GNA have their two deep set two weeks out so everything that's gon to happen in Camp that really matters at every position that we're going to talk about it's going to happen in the next 12 days and in five days with that first maj scrimmage I think most of what this team is going to look like from a depth chart standpoint is going to be put uh that cake will be in the oven five days from now there may be some an area or two that change ever so slightly in the week that follows but I think the coaching staff will have a real good idea of what they want to do in Camp uh if we start going uh by the way thank you Michael we got a solo show today you do and if you ask the right questions if you put in the right super chats you know I'll say anything when when I fly in Solo just just like push me to the edge I will jump so get your questions in let's jump into that specs chat let's make it happen uh you know I'll deliver the goods on this for you um so let's just go through position position the first four days of Camp I've seen a few questions for instance Mark AR asks isore really kicking ass and taking names so far in Camp yeah to a certain degree they just put pads on today for the first time they they've gone shell so they've had shoulder pads and shorts on uh along with helmets for the last couple of days so there has been contact they've been playing thump um Trey Moore's good is more really kicking ass and taking names I mean he's he's a starter he's a starter at Edge at a position that is so talented and so good that Ethan Burke has been moved over to the other side to accommodate his presence he yeah no I mean I'm not gonna look here's what I won't do I'm not gonna give into hyper with anyone anyone because because there's always so much this is this week is the week that matters the most starting today everything's full pads there there's there's no holding back you know even when you're in Shell even when the shoulder pads are on you know you're you're playing above the waist it's it's a little different for an edge guy going up against tackles um when they're not in full pad so is Trey Moore kicking ass I mean yeah like he's he's really good that's just it all of the good Tech Kelvin Banks kicking ass you know I don't mean to be I don't mean to be glib about it um but I don't also want to come in here and do a show and hype up too much been doing this a long time I don't want to show up and do too much [Music] um highlighting of players when the pads are just now coming on uh for instance and I'll give you an example one position where I haven't heard a lot about so far running backs matter of fact I talked to a source who was at practice on Saturday and then another member of our orange blood staff uh communicated with a separate source that had been at this the practice on Saturday and you know they just didn't even really pay attention to the running backs that much not a whole lot happened it wasn't a running back kind of a day that'll change now but it's been pretty quiet with CJ Baxter and Jaden blue and and Trey Weisner and if I'm being completely honest the only real note at the running back position through the first four days of practice was that Christian Clark was a little bit limited going in that's it like there hasn't been so running the football is going to matter these running backs are a team strength so far I'd be lying to you if I said oh man so far Jaden blue just looking like he's on fire CJ bter looks like a completely different player from a year ago it's a little early for that um so yes Trey Moore is really good yes he's he's been very good in practice um kicking ass and taking names let's let's see if that happens starting today my anticipation is that it will you know their expectations for Trey Moore are through the roof they think he's going to be an impact player and I wrote a colum over on orangebloods.com yesterday you can read it if you're not on orange Bloods 60-day free trial hook it up today uh I I tend to put a lot into the 10 thoughts from a weekend column and one of my sections in that column today focused on what had to happen for the 2005 recruit the 2015 team to take the step from they finished fourth in the polls after winning the Rose Bowl in 2004 how did they take the step from top five team to arguably the best team of all time I mean they're in that discussion well they had seven all-americans that year after having only four the year before they returned three returning all-americans of some variety nobody that was a consensus All-American but they had Jonathan Scott coming back similarly to Kelvin banks in fact if you were comparing the teams side by side you'd say well Banks is better than Scott but they were both returning all Americans kind of a wash at that left tackle position the other the 2005 team had returning from 2004 Roger Wright and Michael Huff and in terms of returning elite players Vince Young wasn't thought to be quite at that level yet but obviously he turned into an alien and was the best college football player these eyes have ever seen in 2005 but then you had guys like Justin block step up and you had guys um you know everybody there were guys stepping up all over that team they it finished with seven all-americans including four consensus first team all-americans so that's kind of the bar if this Texas team is going to be something more than a quarterfinalist or even a semi-finalist at the national level as it was a year ago if they're going to take that jump that's the type of jump they have to have the Michigan team from a year ago had six all-americans on it the two Georgia teams before that that won national championships averaged six and a half so somewhere on this team some really good players are going to have to take the jump up to elite players and I mentioned all of this in the the discussion with Trey Moore you know he's a guy that at the end of the year if you told me he wins All America honors I wouldn't be shocked this is a guy that's the nation's leading sack guy returning from a year ago it's a big jump up in terms of competition but he's emerged as a starter they've moved a really good young player in Ethan Burke over the other defensive end spot to accommodate more and yeah like it's if I just showed up every day and said Trey Moore was kicking ass and taking names I'd be right more times than I'm not and and that's if whether or not it even happened or not and I think going into the season he's a guy that we've got to keep an eye on because if you were to ask me okay Texas needs four five six guys to take that step up from very good to aite in this sport Quinn yers is the obvious one and by the way he's having a solid Camp it's kind of interesting to me as we start talking about position by positions it's been kind of quiet on the quarterback front and I think maybe again some of this is it's early in Camp and I'd love to come and do the Monday overreaction show and give you a bunch of overreactions but the reality is we've had four non full Passad practices so think about what they would call that in the NFL you know oh this I'll never forget there was a guy named um Odell Parks I think that was his name I just said I'll never forget and now I'm not completely sure um I covered Cowboys training camp in the 90s there's this guy Odell Parks comes in he was a Joo guy they brought in from the supplemental draft or something like that they didn't draft him but he was having a really good camp but he was having it wasn't preseason games it wasn't in the inner Squad practices against the Raiders that they had that summer it was at the first couple of days of camp and I remember going up to Dave Campo we were doing a story on Odell Parks look how good he's looking in the first few days of camp and I we interviewed Dave Campo and it was a real easy like hey coach thoughts on Odell Parks now look we're doing a story on Odell Parks coach hook us up with a quote or two that we can use in the story it's July help us out and Campo was like yeah it's this doesn't really matter this part of the preseason we're just getting warmed up he he's probably not gonna make the team okay so much for the Odell Park story uh I I just say that as like don't get too hyped up by any single thing that anyone says about any single day in practice it's about consistency in fact when we talk about the wide receiver position here in a second um the names in that group it's about consistency when we go back to the spring and we talk about Isaiah Bond we talk about jont cook even Ryan Wingo Matthew golden you know DeAndre Moore over the course of 15 practices in the spring on any given day any of those Five Guys although maybe not DeAndre Moore I didn't have anybody over 15 practices tell me they thought DeAndre Moore was the best wide receiver in that group but I did have people say it about Golden definitely had people say it about Bond we know that Ryan wingo and jont T cooker people are players that people get really excited for but I don't know that either of them any of those four guys ever put backto back practices together let alone back to back to back to back because that's what Elite play players do Kelvin Banks shows up every day he's Elite the the the players at the wide receiver position coming out of the spring so we're not talking about Silas Balden but all of those other guys and it's too early to draw conclusions we're four days in but the challenge is those guys got to start being good every day and once some of these players start being good every day we're going to have a much better idea of what the wide receiver rotation who the primary guys who more than anyone else Quin yers will be able to lean in on game in and game out and I think sarkeesian will tell you at the wide receiver position that that probably won't even be determined until they play a few games however through four practices Ryan Wingo continues to be a badass continues to be a badass continues to make plays continues to look like a player that's just not going to be kept off the field and and it does feel like a game of musical chairs with regards to the Texas wide receivers somebody's gonna sit down and claim a chair and when this is all said and done they're G to be some good very talented players who were who don't have chairs who may not have starting jobs and may have questionable or uncertain roles as backups on this team Ryan winga is going to have a chair I mean that just seems so obvious now I had you know Cody Carpenter Cody if you're in the chat what up uh you wrote the Sunday Pulpit yesterday I didn't want to hit you out of the blue and ask if you wanted to join me on the show today but probably next time it crossed my mind but I thought little late notice don't want to just throw that at him on a late Sunday night early Monday morning uh oh oh I saw a Super Chat Tom where'd it go hold on I see it on the screen I embrace the super chats there it is just got to make sure that I find them sometimes they elude me uh was hoping to hear more news about Jay cook is the light bulb just not on yet Tom I was literally talking about that literally getting to jonay cook just about consistency with jonte it's not about Talent this is not a guy that was rated as a five star that showed up on campus and I was like oh this guy's not really a fivar i remember thinking that about Jonathan gray when Jonathan gray showed up on campus at Texas that's not to say that Jonathan uh gray wasn't a really good College running back it's not to say that injuries cut short what could have been an NFL career it's not to say that he wouldn't ended up being a really good College running back I'm just letting you know that when he showed up my instinct my initial thoughts on watching him amongst 85 of his peers at the Collegiate level was oh this dude this dude's not five stars I'm not I'm not looking at a future allamerican that was my initial impression that's not jonte cook the talent is there there's a the reasons why he earn five star status are there to be seen it's a consistency issue it's important to remember with cook that you know he's only been on campus what 16 17 months 18 months one full season he's still a young player in the old days he would have been a red shirt freshman instead he's a true sophomore but has really played limited snaps it's about consistency but he is not drawing and has not drawn the rave reviews through the first 18 months that Ryan Wingo has drawn in his first six months do with that information we will jonte Cook's got to turn it on a little bit more he's got to be a more consistent player I would say Ryan Wingo has the edge on jonay cook right now when it comes to consistently making the people inside that those coaching quarters feel like who's going to be an impact player this year I think Wingo has the edge right now and you know some of that is talent but some of that is doing it consistently every day again I I I feel like I'm going to be a broken record we're four practices in so it's a little early to say someone either is or isn't consistently delivering the goods but we'll be we in by the time we get to Saturday we'll have a better idea of that so I think this is a really big week for jonte cook he falls into the category for me of guys starting today in fact let me just while while we're doing this let me let me do a double double check um all right I don't see anything that I'm aware of I haven't missed anything uh by the way Tom just as a followup Jerry I mean how the hell did that happen Jerry if we're just being fully transparent and I say that as a guy that's a big Dave Campo fan um let me see let me just make sure oh there's another Super Chat I'll get right to that uh right now from Buck Wild what up Buck Wild $5 Super Chat assuming the first offensive play is 11 personnel okay I wouldn't automatically assume that wouldn't shock me if they came out in 12 but okay uh if you had to bet your net worth who are the first three wide receivers that run out against Colorado State I think it's gonna be jont T Cook DeAndre Moore Isaiah Bond but God you're making me bet my net worth I don't know I don't know how confident I am about that those are the the start look I tell you what it'll be interesting to see when the practice reports from today roll in are those still the same three you know they move Matthew gold into the slot that's a little bit of an eye opener because that would seem to be a block for Ryan niblet you know if we forget about everything around the slot position we went into the spring talking about the battle between DeAndre Moore and Ryan niblet and it really wasn't much of a battle Ryan uh niblet didn't push DeAndre Moore to the point where that that was a real battle so you go into the fall it's like can Ryan niblet make a move this is a guy that falls into the jontay cook category of still a really young player like we have to we have to remind ourselves of that we knew that when niblet was being recruited that it might take a couple of years for the light switch to come on so when it's August of his second year and the light switch hasn't come on we can't clutch our pearls and act like we we didn't know that when he was being recruited that it might take a couple of years so he doesn't seem ready yet but it's early but then Matthew golden gets nudged over to the slot at least for the first week of practices makes me wonder is there a pathway to get in front of DeAndre Moore is this a big problem for Ryan niblet is this temporary will we eventually see Isaiah Bond move over to the slot again at the wide receiver position it feels like a game of sliding doors musical chairs Isaiah Bond's going to have a spot I mean if you go back to the spring game they tried to pump the ball to him regardless of who the quarterback was 15 times it was a lot over and over and over again and it was when I saw it in real time it was okay Isaiah bond isn't there yet but by God this staff is committed to getting him there so I think he's in you've got jont cook and you've got Ryan wingo and I'm not Haven even gotten to Sil I was Bing yet he's been really good through the first four days of practice just FYI he's really good he's different than everybody else they have which I think is really good for Silas Balin in that what he does nobody else on that team really quite does the same way that he does I think it will allow him to carve out a really big- time role on this team but it feels like they want Wingo to play and it feels like they know that jont cook has to play I'm my one of my biggest concerns about this team is that jont cook falls into I don't know Purgatory football playing Purgatory this year and that they get Wingo on the field and Bon's gonna play and because cook maybe not necessarily as a slot and you got Silas Balden that if Cook starts slow and again he's young too it's a lot of young players Bon's not young you know SS balin's not young uh Matthew Golden's not you wouldn't say young he's been doing this for a while they do have some experience at the wide receiver position um that that doesn't include cook my biggest fear is as talented as cook is he doesn't find the consistency needed and he ends up being a backup it's not impossible because if Ryan Wingo keeps pushing Ryan Wingo is gonna get himself on the field and if that's the case as things currently stand he's behind Isaiah Bond well Bond's not coming off the field so Bond's sliding somewhere he played 60% of his snaps last year at Alabama in the slot it feels like at any time if that's where they want to go they can do that if Cook struggles with consistency you know they can they can move these parts around in a way who are your best three who consistently deliv delers for for Quinn ERS every day it's part of what the next week is going to determine uh and I'd be lying to you if I had if I said I had a I I just buck wild just made me bet my net worth on who I thought would be the first three guys to run out against Colorado state but I I'm being completely honest it's such a competitive position and those parts the Ryan Wingo piece of this is the elephant in the room because the moment they decide that dude has to be on the field and who to hell with whatever feelings get hurt because we're putting Ryan Wingo on the field they're not there yet but they might be there really soon and when that happens how they juggle what happens at the wide receiver position uh is a bit of a question mark for me but it does I do worry about jont t cook a little bit because Isaiah Bond's gonna play and in the moment Ryan and Ryan Wingo is performing at this point at a level above cook it's just as simple as that Ryan Wingo gets mentioned more than jonte cook as a standout right now on a lot it happened on Saturday I was told that the play of practice on Saturday was a play down the sideline made by Wingo so the moment they decide hey man the moment they decide with Ryan Wingo what they decided with Trey Moore which is we have to have him on the field what does that mean we do with Ethan Burke doesn't matter well we're gonna move him over there to Baron cell side but ultimately the real answer to the question was it doesn't matter Trey Moore's got to be on the field that those are the Dynamics that play at the wide receiver position uh Jay Le with a $5 Super Chat what up Jay Lee good to see you I hopefully I will not uh either a miss one of your super chat questions or B read it incorrectly like my partner Chad Hastings is prone to do uh what was is the recruiting rankings of those 23 guys wasn't cook the highest than more yes cook five stars DeAndre Moore more of a national top 100 here let me you asked the question don't let me short Change you let me look and see what DeAndre Moore's official rankings were I want to say that somebody had him ranked as a super blue chip but his stock fell um so Rivals had him he was not a super Blue Chip body Rivals had him as a mid forar 103 in the country and as close as that is to Super Blue Chip status uh not quite there ESPN had him the highest at 75 they also had him as a mid four star 247 had him at 120 nationally on three had him at 226 it's it's a little too soon to draw conclusions on did anybody have it more right than anybody else he is in the starting lineup right now but some of that is because of positionality I know did I just make that word up maybe um DeAndre Moore deemed a isn't competing against jont cook who right now they don't deem a slot but they also don't deem Isaiah Bond a slot a couple of you know back in the spring that wasn't where they thought Matthew golden was going to be positioned so all this is fluid I think at the wide receiver position but yeah right now Mo I think is performing more consistently day and in day out and has since the spring probably has since last year although you know he couldn't get in the SL he couldn't get game time because Jordan Woodington didn't come off the field much when they when they had a slot player on the field so you know I think it's too early to draw conclusions about the DeAndre Moore jonte cook class of 23 is everything okay there um but yeah man like I said cook has to be more consistent but that's the challenge for everybody J cook may be a little less consistent than some of these other guys but when he's at his best I guess one of our competitors I didn't see who it was and there are so many it's like I don't know was it 2 was it chip and 247 was it the inside Texas guys was it bobie and uh whatever they are on Texas football uh I don't know but somebody had come over to Orange Bloods and said somebody is reporting that jont T Cook is showing more separation ability than than anybody on the team I I don't know that I would completely agree with that um if based on the sources I've talked to uh Silas Bolton might be the answer to that question however Jon Cook's really [ __ ] good he's really talented it's like jonte Cook's creating separation that's opening eyes no [ __ ] he's yes that's what he can do he just has to do it consistently and the moment that happens light switch on five star player activated we're watching a future Pro but these things oftentimes can't be rushed um you read my mind Mr 512 I was going to move away from the wide receivers and go straight to tight ends just to give Juan Davis an attaboy I can't go so far as to say that Juan Davis is a great blocker Mr 512 I this is not a call out you brought up Juan Davis I'm going to give Juan Davis an attab boy but grade blocker Mr 512 just a little bit of a little Monday overreaction if you will we got to be careful when we use words like great because and look I'm captain gotta be careful with your words I once said that shakas smart was a damn good basketball coach and people flipped out the big reason why there was a flip out was because everybody's interpretation of what damn good means is wildly subjective for me the hierarchy of good is like good very good damn good great then exceptional like you know that's the hierarchy but if you're if you're still saying good then you haven't reached great and but the thing is when I said that Shaka smart was a damn good coach there were some people who in their estimation of what damn good means they thought that was better than great you're trying to tell me that you think Shaka smart is better than great no he's damn good well damn Good's better than great not to me and anyway it's gone on for years now anytime anything happens with Marquette basketball there will be a damn good reference and it's like all I did was say it was damn good it was like I said it was great when we say that Juan Davis is a great blocker what are we saying that because great to me is Kelvin Banks Kelvin Banks is great there's not another player on that offensive line that I think is a great blocker yet cam Williams could be great DJ Campbell could be great Jay Major's damn good I think Juan Davis is one of the real amazing success stories on this football in fact let's look at Juan Davis's rankings okay because I saw Juan Davis as a senior in high school now now he's a senior at Texas but when I saw Juan Davis as a senior in high school and he was a nothing Prospect nobody was ranking him high everybody had him as a three star Rivals ranked him 7 4 in the state that was the highest ESPN had him at 104 247 had him at 102 I saw Juan Davis as a high school senior and I was like whoa this kid's he's a really good talent and athlete and I thought he was a four-star Prospect I thought he was certainly better than three stars but he hasn't done anything in his career in fact if we look at Juan Davis's bio on the Texas website let me just read to you what his this is what it says this is what it says on his bio a four-year tight end who appeared in 28 games was an all district quarterback in high school last year played in 13 games primarily on special teams sopore played in 10 games primarily on special teams freshman played in five games if I'm not mistaken Juan Davis has one freaking career reception there's no reason to think that Juan Davis would enter this season as anything other than an afterthought and yet here he is playing in a lot of 12 Personnel sets I think eventually Amari nbl's going to be ahead of him Gunner Helm is ahead of him but Juan Davis is going to play a lot this year he's going to play several hundred snaps yeah I'm okay with saying that maybe a couple hundred and for a guy that was an afterthought and really wasn't playing at all I mean even the bio on the official Texas website make sure to specify primarily on special teams that he has emerged as a player that we're even talking about hey man volleyball clap for Juan Davis I I'm I'm happy for that guy and Mark or Mr 512 excuse me I'm about to put Mark Super Chat on the screen so forgive me although it would be ironic if I didn't know your name was Mark and ended up being mark But nevertheless uh if Juan Davis is good enough to get on the field for a couple of hundred snaps this year at tight end at Texas a team that wants to use the tight end a lot maybe that means there's an NFL player inside of him it's it's not it's not Tom fullery it's not crazy talk can't use the word great yet but I don't know what even word I would use other than to say he's gotten good because they're using him a lot uh and it seems something that they're excited about and committed to uh Mark re $5 Super Chat technically 499 somebody's gonna have to explain to me someday the 499 part of this just put that extra goddamn penny in there uh is number four wide receiver number four better whoever it is uh then tight end one Helm why not just run four wide I think there's a couple of reasons for that when they've got they like to keep tight ends on the you're not going to see this offense run a lot of four wide receiver sets and it's not something that Tom Herman did a lot of yeah I I can remember watching when chance mock was a junior so 2003 yeah because that was that Oklahoma game um I can remember in practice remember this was Roy and BJ and Sloan and Tony Jeffrey and um you know this was a very talented set of wide receivers the thought was they practice five wides a lot that summer then the game started and he never saw F never saw him go five wides and I kept thinking to myself they're saving it for Oklahoma they're gonna come out in the Oklahoma game in 2003 and they're gonna go five wides and they're gonna let it rip because they got all this wide receiver Talent uh talented to be fair when it was all said and done they had Roy Williams and a bunch of guys that weren't good enough playing the NFL uh and Oklahoma back in 2003 had guys in the secondary that were NFL players they go up against Oklahoma and it turned out the game plan was let chance have one bad moment and throw in Vin young and didn't just let him run around like his chicken with a head cut off and that worked for a quarter and then they bludgeon Texas but I starting with that five set five wide receiver set that I thought man we're g to see some of that at some point I feel like over the course of the last 20 years there's always this idea won't it be fun and sexy to put four wides on the field uh let's go you know twins each each side let's let's go and I've yet to come across a head coach at Texas that doesn't like having a tight end on the field and sarks in that group and one of the big reasons for that is if you keep your tight end on the field from a from a from a Personnel standpoint you are tipping nothing to the defense with when you're in 11 or 12 Personnel you can run it you can throw it you can rotate your receivers at that point keep the same tight ends on the field and you're not tipping your hand to the defense who's watching what you're doing with Personnel to try to get an idea of what personnel they need to have on the field one of the reasons why coaches offensive coaches love being good at tight end is because it masks what they're doing from a play calling standpoint better than what it looks like when you go pure four wide outs no tight ends you're you're probably throwing the football and and teams opposing defensive coordinators can adjust to that scheme to that often times not all the time I'm not telling you never to go four wides because I kind of like four wides I'm just telling you why does it not happen more that's the reason why they want to keep that tight end on the field even when it means it's an absolute concession there have been times over the years when Texas will have a tight in on the field they'll split him out wide and it's like playing 10 on 11 but opposing coaches have to keep that honest they have to account for that guy and it's 10 on 10 with the offense in Theory dictating what it wants to do would the number four wide receiver whoever that is be a better wide receiving or receiving option on the field than Gunner Helm probably probably you know you're playing basketball on grass at that at that point uh but yeah you know you're talking about in theory that's Ryan Wingo or jont T Cook or Silas balding so yeah yeah the the number four receiver in a video game if we're playing video game football on the Xbox or Playstation uh yeah you're probably going four wides it's more fun it's more sexy in actuality coaches like uh to have that tight end on the field for a myriad of reasons but uh just deception being Chief among them when you go four wide it's a little bit less deception and a guy like sarkeesian is always gonna want the deception he's always gonna want you don't know what I'm doing you don't know what I want to do that Personnel package allows for that in a way that four wides doesn't um Vivic asks will our tight end play be better than last year no no I mean this team was better with gavian Sanders available to it so uh it it be it's going to be good you've got probably a slightly better version of G Helm Amari nbl's good player you know is he you know it's it's like having a dollar in your pocket as opposed to a 50 cent piece a quarter two dimes and a nickel maybe they kind of come close to adding up you'd rather have the dollar uh you'd rather not have pennies oh I know I got a dollar in here but let me count my pennies and there's two dimes and a nickel and it sucks when you only have one quarter and you're trying to count it up the tight end Position will be good it's not no no no it will not be better um you can think that Sanders was a liability as a blocker he made the team better he's just he's he's the best tight end in school history I I I know that we can talk about all the things that he wasn't but that's what he was um and and they don't have that and by the way you know jaavan Sanders looking good in his first NFL training camp something that none of the guys on this team are guaranteed to do I think nl's probably an NFL player I think gunar hm's probably an NFL player who knows maybe even Juan Davis but I don't know that they'll be jatavian Sanders that guy was a mismatch That Guy created chaos for opposing defenses I don't care if he didn't like blocking at all he was a matchup problem that opposing defenses struggled with uh when Texas was committed to getting the ball to him uh let's talk about the defense for a little bit by the way oh we got super chats no we will not go to defense by the way it's almost been an hour are there any updates let me just let me just give me a second I been talking so damn much that I have not yet seen whether or not any updates I don't see anything on orange Bloods yet I don't see anything in my team's channel here I'm just gonna type are you guys let me just type this out are [Music] you live YouTube YouTu in I don't know how much longer we're going to go on the show but you know who knows maybe maybe we'll get a practice update from today I I just threw that out there to try to figure out what the hell's going on um back to the super chats uh Buck Wild Trey Moore will break Burk sack total from last season in the first five games 5.5 I'll sell it's I'll sell it's not an impossibility but you're probably going to see you know when you think about like Colorado State you know maybe not so much Michigan who won't throw the ball as much but you're gonna see a lot of rotation early in the season um I'll sell that 5.5 is a big number so first five games that feels uh a little a little high but we'll see I would say calm down a little bit because well Texas hasn't had a double- digit sack guy since Jackson Jeffco I would need to look that up I remember am minue got close I think am minue finished with nine in his last season but double digit sacks that those those guys don't grow on trees Moore is making the adjustment um to Major C like truly major college football uh let's let's let's give him a little bit of an adjustment period if he gets to double digits in the season that's an unbelievable win like let me just frame the proper picture Texas hasn't had a double digit sack guy in over a decade if Moore gets there in 12 games not five and a half in the first five which you know he's at 11 after 10 and if he can get 10 [ __ ] 10 10 like Billy Bob 10 if he can get 10 in the season that's a that's an A+ transfer portal get we just I know like we're all playing NCAA again I'm not because I just don't but like we as a society and we get these crazy I had an edge player win the Heisman because I had 36 sacks on the I get it I do but man 10 over 12 or even four 14 would be a massive win they just don't grow on trees and there's a reason why there are people that look at Trey Moore's sack numbers at UTSA and go oh they don't count it's not major college football he's playing at a lower level of of division one you know not to completely dismiss UTSA it's not scrubs but it's not the SEC it's not even a big 12 it's not certainly not the big 10 it's not those things uh Jay Lee $10 super chat thank you Jay Le I do love you uh hot take oh I Jay I haven't read it yet I'm staring at the camera the it's over here matter of fact might be better if I move my uh onir letting me know that Alex and Jason have both left practice all right I'm waiting for Intel from practice that may have to come after the show teas you with some stuff from house to okay the hot take what is it I think we were deprived of high tide in for so long JT seem so impressive I think Helm is better overall five years from now we will look back at that position and JT won't be top three Jay that's a hot take that is a Monday overreaction if there ever was [Music] one you prefaced it with it's a hot take what am I it's a hot take I think it's a little crazy I think you need to put some more respect on jatavian Sanders's name but it's a hot take and all I can do is applaud it well done well done Jay you're on the record if in a few years jatavian Sanders isn't even in the top three who said it first Jay Le the cool thing though Jay and trust me because I do this for a living more times than not people will forget your Monday hot takes if you're wrong sometimes they remember them forever but a lot of times they'll just forget them believe me I say all kinds of stuff on Mondays and I can't even I can't even remember all the stuff I say so I like that $10 you're on the record you slander JT Sanders a little bit which seems a little unfair uh but nevertheless I Like It Hot take who else has got a hot take come on come on give me more hot takes um yeah jayen said for $ two doll that's why it's a hot take if I'm wrong oh well Jay you don't have to defend yourself at all I get it I'm with you I'm team Jay Le I want some more hot takes come on come on Brandon don't you don't you hit with the very crazy it's a it's it's it's a Monday overreaction show that's what this is for I like it I don't see anybody else putting in $10 for a hot take right now before I before the show rounds down because I do have to do another show in like two hours and Chad's waiting to hear from me and and Jay Lee will remind us you know Jay thing is I won't forget this hot take you're I'm going to remember this one does anybody have a hotter hot take than Jay Lee on this Monday don't you criticize Jay Lee for his hot take he's letting he's letting it all hang out he's like that French pter who didn't metal because he let it all hang out anybody else want to let it hang out come on five Super Chat give me your biggest hot take biggest hot take uh oh Jesus Christ Cody Cody you don't count but that's a hot that is a Monday overreaction hot take Jordan Washington will be the best all time Cody [Music] Cody come on man Cody best all time Cody if you'd put five dollars on that I'd let that would be the hot take of the day I'm trying to I'm trying to generate uh oh oh here we go here we go Tom G is like you want a hot take I got a hot take $10 hot take blue not backer leads in both rushian yards and allpurpose yards Tom thank you for the $10 Super Chat I do not think that is a hot take I agree with you I think Jaden Blue's just better last year he was better at a full yard per clip per carry one guy was 4.7 yards per carry another was 5.7 and I I I there was somebody with jump into the chat right now and go but CJ bter was hurt and was battling then they're all all banged up he's a running back find me a running back that doesn't get banged up and hobbled over the course of a season and I'll find you a guy that's not really a running back the numbers are the numbers and and the truth of the matter is the numbers got padded a little bit at the end of the season against some inferior teams that help boost that up to 4.7 I need to see CJ Baxter ball out it's time it's time you you can't be a five-star running back and you know what it's true of Ruben Owens at Texas A&M as well you can't be five stars or borderline five stars and averaging less than five yards per carry you can do that if you're Jerome Bettis in the NFL and just roll your way to the NFL Hall of Fame I will never understand that but uh in college football you need to be close to Six or above it and not not below five uh but hey you're there are people who Tom I'm not the only one that agrees with you I'm just saying I don't think that's as scorching of a hot take but considering CJ baers preseason second Team all SEC and Jaden blue is nowhere to be found maybe it is to the media in the SEC is um zo wants to know what do I think about JT Sanders against jichael Finley I think JT Sanders was a better player more consistent in J Michael's last regular season game of his career against Texas A&M what I guess that would have been 2007 I was told by two of Jer Michael's fellow teammates I don't want to put anybody on blast but uh I was at Gold's Gym two guys who were older than jichael were in the gym and they told me this that jichael finished with the lowest grade in the A&M game in two I think in 2007 if I if I have it correctly uh and to be fair one of the guys I literally saw out at Dallas Nightclub the night before game so so the whole team was a little distracted in 2007 but one of the players both of those guys told me on the elliptical machine that jichael had the lowest graded performance that they had ever seen from any player ever ever there's a part of me that's always wanted to ask your Michael about that a is it true and if so I have no reason to believe why two of his offensive teammates would have just randomly said that um but jichael was inconsistent so uh I would take jatavian Sanders if you're asking me and you did uh let's see any other questions yes Jerry I know I know believe me I got a Jerome Bettis blast in me that I'm just it's Monday he didn't want to catch a stray I'll have Steeler fans get upset but that that dude doesn't need to be in the NFL Hall of Fame it's a travesty it's a travesty that Jerome Bettis is in the NFL Hall of Fame and Jamal Charles won't be because one guy averaged almost two yards more per carry uh in the prime of their careers uh Buck Wild Longhorn finish this off Buck Wild my my leg is itching by the way scratching near my ankle um Super Chat $10 I thought about this hot take a oh it's a hot take he's I haven't even read it yet it's a I stopped myself it's a hot take he's been marinating on all right what is it let me see Owens whoa Owens will be wow yes this is the best hot take of the Year Owens will be considered the better quarterback than yours and Manning when they are all off to the NFL that is the hottest take in the history of orange blood's lives I'm so proud of you Buck Wild that that's so what's such a hot take I have already forgotten Jay Le's hot [Music] take you've been thinking about this for a while I I bow down I bow down to that hot take skip bis bows down to that skip bis has never said anything about LeBron James that's as hot as that hot [Laughter] take yes yes it is it's spicy it's herish it is so spicy it's my mouth is burning it's that spicy I like that Cody Carpenter just said that Jordan Washington would finish as the best alltime tight end and he's like oh what a hot take are you kidding me oh I me too me too I'm with you like here's the thing everybody we're all on the same page it's such a hot take that all anybody can do is stand back and applaud I mean wo woo I I'm I I'm letting you I'm letting you have the last word today I'm letting this scorching white hot take from Buck Wild be the final word on today's show other than to say again thanks to the guys over at specs um for being the official sponsor of the chat and what happened what's going on here what happened to the MonDay overreaction hold on I don't know what happened but something happened and the Monday overreaction Banner just disappeared just I got at least in the show I'm literally about to give [Music] um my guys over no not the modcast that's mislabeled or I just hit the wrong thing oh God here we go is this it there because it's the overreaction Monday show and it's sponsored by Rogue shop and while I'm at it can I find the Rogue shop I'm so bad at this this why it's why Chad has a job it's not for the
