Oregon Preview | How Dillon Gabriel will fit in Ducks Offense | National Championship Contender

Overview second in the conference to finish and some people have them winning the Big 10 as well in their first year in the Big 10 is the Oregon Ducks and I think where their programs at the transition in a new era of conference reignment and the 12 team playoff and nil and the transfer portal like is there any program I mean Texas and Oregon are the two that come to mind that when they move they made this move it's the most perfect transition to where the where where they're at personally with Oregon in in their program with the roster that they have constructed with the coach and Dan Ling who's young fiery got SEC experience like this Oregon team you transition to a big conference from the Pack 12 is perfect timing Overview at Oregon um transitioning into the Big 10 um where do you stand on it and what are your kind of your you know first overview thoughts about the Oregon Ducks well you know I mean year one of Dylan Gabriel the first and only year of Dylan Gabriel you know he had a really good uh year two at Oklahoma um obviously he was a little injury plagued in year one um year two he came out played really really well and I think in terms of the way that Oregon likes to distribute the football to their Playmakers quick screens fly sweeps uh quick outs Slants just like that kind of that that point guard mentality of getting the ball out quickly out of your hands um I think Bo Knicks was great at it but I think Dylan Gabriel kind of takes it to that next level um with him being able to distribute the ball um I kind of look at Dylan Gabriel as kind of having that like Michael pennick kind of year two um if you think about like okay he Dillon Gabriel transfers he plays really really well they have a decent season and then like in year two he really explodes obviously Dylan Gabriel doesn't have that second year to be able to do that at Oregon but I feel like the team is set up um obviously you talk about Evan Stewart coming coming in from Texas A&M you talk about TZ Johnson as a returner um you got some really good weapons on the outside for the Oregon Ducks and folks who listen to the podcast and last year and stuff like that Cody had a his big 12 quarterback rank Kings and he had Dylan Gabriel I think at one or it was near the top and I there's a famous clip of me going oh he's so overrated and stuff but that's one thing about Dylan Gabriel this past year that's definitely flipped my script on him is I never really saw Dylan Gabriel's ability to take over a game until that red Rael rivalry game you know one minute no timeouts 75 yard Drive The Run he had up the middle you know even the throw he had in the end zone even though it was a wide open pass to still execute that that's something I've been waiting to see from Dylan Gab is that next step to take over a game like we saw with Michael pennick last year with Indiana like we saw with bonck and his ability to take over games that I think is going to be the Difference Maker and it's perfect time and Dylan Gabriel's a testament of it to use your eligibility and get better every single season and not go to the league early you imagine Dyan gabber going to the league early he could he could have struggled in the NFL early we could be talking to him like a guy like Zack Wilson who you know went to the NFL after three years and he's struggling in the NFL but um I I I think Dylan Gabriel's ability to take over an offense and be able to take over a game is something I haven't seen and with this many weapons this guy's the limit for Dylan Gabriel for sure yeah you know and it's gonna be interesting to see I think uh the guy ahead of him set the record for most career starts with I think 61 and then Dylan Gabriel sitting at 49 is kind of set up perfectly to end up actually breaking that record whether or not that's in like the big 10 Championship or maybe even possibly a playoff game so it's really interesting to see Oregon like Texas their ability to reload in the portal with guys with Evan Stewart & Tez Johnson similar skill sets and potentially even better is just it it's it's impressive some of the guys that they added in the portal wide receiver Evan Stewart from Texas A&M this is going to be a breakout guy and in this offense I'm I'm looking forward to seeing him with TZ Johnson I mean them being a to stress the field vertically the play action pass and with Oregon's offensive line Washington's offensive line was the best in the country I think this Oregon offensive line and Josh connly is one of the off one of the left tackles coming back with potential first round Talent I'm looking at Phil Steels magazine he's got him ranked as the best offensive line in the Big 10 on top of Evan Stewart you mentioned TZ Johnson and another guy it's this offense man it's got Offense Is LOADED everything that you want for a quarterback you've got I mean for an offensive coordinator too you've got a quarterback that's a dual threat that's smart that's got history and Veteran experience you've got two wide receivers TZ Johnson and Evans through that can take the top off the defense you got a stout offensive line that can hold that can hold firm and play action pass and open those down the field too and then you got a guy in Jordan James that's got a lot of similar playing style as a Bucky Irving like you mentioned like the swings out of the back field the quick outs to get him out in space Yak excited to see him and then you add the tight end room with Terrence Ferguson coming back as the the the leader you know guy that can open the the offense down the middle of the field but another guy that not don't know people were talking about that you and me are fans of in the seven on seven circuit is Kenyan sadik he is going to be a guy that I don't think people know and I I I saw Yogi rth talk about that that's a guy that they've implemented in their offense during fall Camp competitive depth at every position offensively it's really like if you're will Stein you're I mean you're you're having the best year of your life this is all you want for an offense you have so many different Avenues and different ways to attack defenses yeah you know I think a guy Kenyon Sadiq like Kenyan sadique they said he's like sadique the freak like he's an absolute freak athlete 64 230 they have him slated as a tight end but more than likely you'll probably see him standing up in the slot playing um out in space um as you said we were able to watch him I actually coached against him um when he was playing for um I want to say 208 Platinum um shout out to Jess Jackson and 208 Platinum 7 on7 program out there um an absolute freak um at the time he was playing W wide receiver um and yeah he was always the best player on the field there obviously in the 7 on7 circuit in the Pacific Northwest and now to see him at Oregon and really excelling um and elevating his game is really really impressive to see so you call offensive plays if you've got that much Weaponry how how do you how do you attack a defense well if if you're will Stein you got a Dylan Gabriel I mean a Jordan James who we're both fans of we saw what Bucky Irving did out of the backfield and kind of a running game that didn't really get talked about you How Dillon Gabriel will Fit in Oregon Offense know you lose Troy Franklin Evan Stewart steps in you got Trea Holden who's a big time you know big body wide receiver you kind of attack defenses different ways what sticks out to you I guess when you look at you know how Dylan Gabriel can come in and how would you you know call this offense well to me like when you have a dillian Gabriel and all the weapons around him I think multiple sets two back one back no back go empty use the backside of the backfield in the passing game I think the sky is the limit for this Oregon offense so it'll be interesting to see how they how they play on defense they return a lot they got nine returning starters they also did well in the portal getting a guy in Jabar Maham um a cornerback from Washington you know Dante minning comes back Kobe Savage the number one safety in the portal from Kansas State he's on this roster but what where they're going to make their money is definitely the linebacking core with Jeffrey basa and Justin Jacobs the only concern I have I guess if I had a concern for Oregon's defense would be Young Deep Defensive Line their dline a very you know deep dline a young dline if they can kind of stay Stout and then another guy we didn't even mention Matteo IOU young coming in second year five star got a lot of playing time last year he's kind of there Kavon Tibido you know when he was a freshman and then his second year kind of kind of stood out that's what I'm expecting from Mato if they can have that an interior pressure because they're DB Court I mean Ohio State's got the best DB Corp but I think Oregon's right behind with what they did in the portal with Mohamad and Savage yeah you know anytime you get a guy Jabar Mohamad Mr Box thumbs down I think he was the one who started that celebration um I think a guy like that kind of is that last missing piece when you're talking about a whole team like I have it written down here to me this is the best Oregon team that I've probably ever seen maybe anybody's ever seen um I kind of hearken back to like those back those three backt backto back BCS bowl games uh that they went to with Mar Marcus Mariota when they had like De Anthony Thomas and L Michael James and um Kenyan Barner and you know brillan Addison um Keen low just absolute freaks on the edges um it'll be interesting to see um how they're able to put this all together I think it's going to be fun to watch Dan Landing heads into the year three this is my one concern for Oregon Situational Coaching those who watched the show last year we brought up situational coaching and Dan laning was probably the number one victim outside of Mario Chris Ball and what happened with Miami and Georgia Tech specifically against Washington that first game second game I think he kind of turned it around you know that fourth quarter in Washington game in Pack 12 they couldn't do anything offensively but um you go back to that first game you were at it Cody I mean they six seconds left on the three yard line fourth and goal they're down four you take the field goal you got the ball to start the second half you're down one instead you don't convert on the touchdown you're down four momentum kind of switches back to Washington heading in in the second half fourth and three ball at Midfield minute 58 left I get you want to ice the game and put it away but maybe pun it inside the 5 yard line have P go 95 yards instead pennx gets the ball at Midfield two plays to a dunesday we know the rest so do you think with Dan Lanning with all this with all this talent coming from last year do he learned from this in big bigger moments bigger better roster do you see him kind of improving that situational coaching or is that a concern that not a lot of people are talking about you think we still carry over um into this season well you know one of the things that people that has endeared uh coach Lanning to people is that he's aggressive he's an aggressive um hair on fire football coach and I think that that's one of the things that is his one of his calling cards and one of the things that is really like one of his characteristics that allow people to really like him so I think that as long as Dan Lanning continues to be himself I think you'll start to see you'll see Oregon go for it on fourth down a lot just just as much as they did maybe last year the difference being I think um obviously better talent and that's not a disrespect to last year's Oregon team last year's Oregon team was probably about three or four plays away from being arguably in the in a final four right MH and so I think that this team is just in terms of the way it's constructed and kind of a year two year three year four for some of these guys now that are kind of coming up through the the two deep not to mention those impact transfers that have come in I think this is going to be again the greatest collection of talent that Oregon has had and I feel like Dan lenning is going to feel maybe even more comfortable kind of going for it in those kind of Tipping Point moments on the on the offensive side of the ball yeah they're going to play really fast and I think one thing that Oregon's lacked on in the history that Dan lennings brought to him is the physicality and on defensive side that he's going to bring to you look at their Schedule schedule at Oregon State the Civil War is going to be played in week three September 14th um um obviously we mentioned October 12th Ohio State at home November 2nd at Michigan may be a tough game it's goingon to be cold there it's can be one of those trap games hint hints later on in the episode that I have um at Wisconsin November 16th and then November 30th against Washington other than that I look at their schedule you know Maryland Illinois Purdue Michigan State UCLA on the list not a concern um when I look at their schedule it's gonna be interesting to see how their playing style matches up against some of those Wisconsin teams that like to kind of run down your throat and really kind of you know run the clock and kind of stretch that game out you know absolutely I think um I think Oregon the cool thing about Oregon is they're able to play both ways they're also they're able to play Fast they're able to throw the ball in the edges but they're also able to ground and pound milk the clock and I think that at the end of the day even including Dyan Gabriel in the Run game it'll be something that they'll be able to do and I look for Dylan Gabriel to have kind of like a Heisman contending season at Oregon just based on the fact that they're going to be in a lot of big kind of high-profile games and be at or near the top of the rankings all season long X-Factor: RB Jordan James let's go X factors and then we will conclude on our Oregon Ducks preview here my my X Factor I'm going to go Jordan James man I think what the way they used Bucky Irving in that offense you look at his stats from last year 1,200 yards 11 touchdowns 56 catches is one thing that sticks out to me if they can get him out and going you know a nice easy check down for Dylan Gabriel if things aren't open which with those wide receivers in that tight end I'm sure something somebody is gonna get open on every single play but I have a check down with Jordan James I'm excited to see the explosiveness from him and him kind of you know take a step forward in his career and stand out in the running back position so that's gonna be my ex Factor Jordan James I like that choice I'm gonna go with Evan Stewart I mean when you lose a Troy Franklin you know a high level draft pick in the NFL um at receiver you kind of look to who's going to kind of replace him and as much as I love TZ Johnson he's just a X-Factor: WR Evan Stewart different type of player right smaller shiftier in the slot type of guy but now you have a true deep threat in Evan Stewart coming over from Texas A&M who was part of that like crazy recruiting class that Texas A&M brought in a couple years ago and I think that now Evan Stewart's going to really be able to come in and be an instant impact player um in in that Oregon offense it kind of takes them kind of over that hump again and kind of being in the in the discussion as the best if not if one of if not the best offenses in the country that's crazy that Texas A&M Freshman Class like I remember how much talk was behind that with all the nil and stuff it's like where are they now I think Walter Nolan was a part of that now he's with Old Miss like it's just crazy man at A&M everyone had such high expectations and then you oops fell apart but Ohio State organ like you mentioned those are probably the two and everyone's going to say it too the high the highly favor to win the Big 10 those are our Championship contenders in terms of the of the Big 10 and beyond that
