toing the news at 7 on this Wednesday bumper year for the citizenship by investment program CIU had reports surge in applications prison officer charged for the murder of an inmate two missionaries robbed of their motor vehicle make an appeal to their as salant on the eve of the observance of the National Day of Prayer and electronic travel authorization ETA needed for travel to the UK as of next January those are the top stores at 7 the news in details starts right [Music] now the local Evening News is brought to you by njo local agents Bryson's Insurance good evening thank you so much for joining us for the ABS evening news on this weddes day a special welcome to those joining us on our various online platforms my name is Garfield berford and I'm Terry Andrew good evening our top story is about welcome news for this crucial source of non-t tax revenue which has seen one of its best years on record the disclosure is coming from Chief Executive Officer of the citizenship by investment unit charmain quinland Donovan so as we begin it is news that the country's citizenship by investment program the CIP is enjoying a bumper year Shan quinland Donovan addressed those details during an exclusive interview with our Ursel Charles Jr the citizenship by investment unit CIU is recording one of its best years now in its 11th year CEO charmine quinland Donovan says the number of applications in 2024 alone is approximately equal to those received in the last three years combined the last few months we've actually seen quite a takeup in the number of applications uh that we received as a matter of fact this year we've received more applications than we have received in the last three or four years combined she notes applicants are not only attracted by the opportunities for investment in this country but also by the power of the passport and the rigor of the application process that really speaks volumes for Antiga and Barbuda for the revenues that will be available to the government and also it speaks volumes of the confidence that people place in this program and why it is they are interested in becoming citizens of Antiga and Baroda more applications will no doubt redound the more benefits to the country's economy the CEO also Praises her hardworking team who she says Works insidiously daily knowing the funds will be down to the fiscal performance of the country's coffers the staff of the ciou we come in here every day filled with pride knowing that the work that we do redounds into the um sustainability of the economy of Antiga and Barbuda um our work is to ensure that the persons who come through this program are of very good character and that we ensure that nefarious actors are kept a bay so that we can continue to enjoy the foreign direct Investments that this program attracts CIP funds have been in the past used to pay for Social Security pensions vaccine purchases retrofitting the CWI Lake Medical Center and paying public sector workers during Co years among others for abs news I'm Ursel Charles Jr Ursel thanks now if you plan on traveling to the United Kingdom you will soon need to have an electronic travel authorization or ETA to do that the ETA will be needed for travel beginning January next year now the move comes as the United Kingdom uh let's move on this because the government there is making moves to digitize its border and immigration system release on Tuesday Tuesday indicates that from the 27th of November 2024 eligible non-europeans can apply for an ETA and will need an ETA to travel from the 8th of January next year etas are digitally linked to a traveler's passport and ensure more robust Security checks are carried out before people begin their Journey to the UK the release says this helps to prevent abuse of the immigration system an ETA costs 10 British pound sterling and permits multiple Journey to the UK for stays of up to 6 months at a time over 2 years or until the holder's passport expires whichever is sooner the release clarifies that everyone wishing to travel to the UK except British and Irish citizens will need permission to travel in advance of traveling now information about ETA eligibility is now available on the website gov.uk that's gov.uk anyone needing to apply for an ETA will be able to do so using the UK ETA app now the implementation of an ETA for travel to the UK is not linked to a lack of rigor or citizenship by investment programs across the region Chief Executive Officer of the citizenship by investment unit charmain quinland Donovan is dispelling that notion speaking to our news team earlier today she says well she raes the move to improve border security and that the move is in no way attri well attributed to the access holders of an antean and barbudan passport have per se it's a move that we're seeing within number of those large territories they are more concerned about securing their borders not only for persons who obtain passports to these programs but generally so it's not just persons from the five regions who will be required to come but she articulates the move is not very different from having British passengers go through an electronic system for travel authorization estaa Visa waiver before entry to us ports quinland Donovan praises the move commending moves to strengthen border security in general as a matter of fact British citizens are required to register with the Esther even to enter the us so it is something that we will see come about with the larger Nations as they work to Shoring up their borders and getting an early indication as to who will be visiting their countries so that they can do whatever uh background checks they need to do before the persons arrive in other the news now and police have arrested and charged prison officer Dwight Rodney Peters of ovals with a murder of inmate raldo Isaac of bendal the charge stemmed from an incident at his maj's prison on April 28th this year Isaac was later pronounced dead on May 11 2024 prison superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Penny feather declined to comment extensively on the unfolding situation since the matter is now before the court however he responded to our query about whether there were any concerns about holding the prison officer with the same inmates he had been in charge of guarding that is something yet to be determined between myself and the commissioner uh whether it would be would be wise to have that individual basically accommodated here or or whether other arrangements could could be made in regard to that which is not unusual and it hasn't been done before meanwhile Peters will be brought before the court tomorrow we'll of course update you on that development as it unfolds St now in a follow up on our own reporting police have charged Damen Crump of bath Lodge which shooting with intent possession of firearm possession of ammunition and malicious damage he is alleged to have opened fire at a taxi driver in Yorks on the 6th of September damaging the taxi man's vehicle well uh Kum surrendered to the police on Sunday after a wanted bulletin was issued for him he is due to appear in court tomorrow this evening we're also following this major developing story as well and it is that uh 20-year-old Germaine Thomas of Green Bay is to spend 10 months in his Majesty's prison for breaking and lening he pleaded guilty in court today to breaking into ebike tours at Cross and Nea streets he stole an electronic bike valued over at $4,000 as well as a cash register Thomas also pleaded guilty to damaging the business place during the Breakin he was sentenced to 10 months for the lar charge and 6 months for the malicious Dam damage charge both of which run concurrently so in all he spends 10 months behind bars well this evening an ABS exclusive as two missionaries of the Church of Christ of latterday saints who were robbed of their vehicle on Sunday in sweets Village have a message for the perpetrator the appeal comes on the eve of National Day of Prayer which was to collectively seek God's divine intervention guidance and blessing on the twin Island state adits an increase in violent crime Elder Noah Keila and Elder copy was robbed of their keys and vehicle in sweets Village while visiting friends we went to visit some really good friends of ours over in sweets um as missionaries we go and we share messages about Jesus Christ so we went and we were sharing with them for about 15 minutes and unfortunately a guy kind of crossed the street really quick and he pulled out a gun and he told us to give him the car keys and our phones and our wallets and so my companion at the time he gave him the car keys and his phone and I actually got up to give him my phone and he ran away he ran to the car and got in the car and like and drove off super quick the vehicle is a grayish blue Suzuki Vitara license plate A6 3368 Elder copany has since returned to the United States Elder ker who has been on missionary work here in Antiga for 6 months now says he was terrified by the incident was it frightening oh I was terrified yeah I was I was petrified I I was I I kind of like couldn't believe what was going on I was like no way this is happening um and I was really scared but I knew I I wasn't scared of being shot but rather I was just kind of scared of the situation El keiler decided to focus on a solution he thinks best fits this ordeal bad things happen like every day right and the point of life isn't to focus on the negative situations but rather it's to use those and and to become better because of them and so for the guy that that did that we understand that unfortunately he was in a very bad spot probably he was in a rough a rough situation and so although what he did was wrong we forgive him I forgive him right that situation was scary however it's okay the missionary says he has been enjoying his time here ministering to people who would listen and the incident hasn't dampened his spirits about the country forgiveness is something that's so important and and it's natural for me because I love Antiga and I love the people so much I cannot overstate how much I love being here and serving the people as missionaries not only do we share messages about Jesus Christ we also we go and we help people do stuff we help people clean their yards we cut trees down we we trim yards like these things are are so awesome and it's really helped me to develop that kind of love that Jesus Christ has for everybody if he sees this reach out to us I we would love to figure it out and to to talk about this because this is something that it's hard but hard situations happen and so we would love to talk to him about this while Kela has gotten a new colleague to continue their work he says the incident has taught him to do things differently for me I'd say we're probably going to be a little more careful about where we go at night time right and about our our patterns of of where we go and when we go there but honestly no honestly the the work what we're doing sharing this message is something that's so important that it it can't be stopped just by just by one robbery one bad thing happening right and so it while it's tragic we we're going to keep going Terry Andrew ABS news of course we'll follow that story as well now prime minister honorable Gaston Brown has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to providing more resources for law enforcement agencies and the fight against criminal activities he told fellow lawmakers in parliament's lower house on Wednesday uh last on Tuesday that there will be intensified surveillance of the nation's ports of Entry Ed um some additional um gun sniff we will have at least four more and those will be stationed at the as well as the airport so those who are bringing guns um through prime minister also says the security forces will soon have more technological tools at their disposal I purchase 10 additional Jones so that if a crime takes place in a particular area then all police has to do um based on the vicinity and and by the way we've equipped our police with radios we have bought about 250 radios and we buying another 250 the member of our city east is the one who is handling that our surveillance cameras will be increased as well they'll be better monitored so it is a comprehensive approach I don't think there's any time in the history of antean Barbuda that any Administration would have taken on the issue of fighting crime and violence in such a meanwhile prime minister Brown has also called for everyone in the society to take a zero tolerance approach to Crime the head of government makes it clear the majority of crimes are committed by locals and insist the long arm of the law will extend to all criminals whether they are locals or immigrants 95% of the crime the criminal activities in this country are committed by locals so I want to make the point here that we not skip go skip goating any particular group of individuals it's just that you know if they are domestic criminals we have no choice but to deal with them to try and rehabilitate them but we're saying if they are not citizens out you go here's more from Parliament yesterday because the lower house is set to continue debating on Friday on the anti-gang bill 2024 of course that debate started yesterday extensive coverage on ABS Adrina atel Des Souza has more this evening on those contributions some of the other contributions which were made yesterday the anti-gang bill 2024 is among a raft of legislative measur by the government in response to the recent surge in violent crime independent Member of Parliament and Minister for agriculture lands fisheries and the blue economy honorable Anthony Smith Jr praises the government for its Swift approach to curb violence within the country I my support and to say that I support the anti-gang bill 20124 wholeheartedly Mr Speaker I also want to take the opportunity just to commend the cabinet for the work that they would have been doing in regards to addressing and tackling this issue with our youth MP Smith also endorses the rehabilitative programs to be introduced by the government we can't fight violence with violence alone Mr Speaker we must look to rehabilitate Our Youth and again I just want to commend the programs that the government is trying to introduce coming out of social transformation and other respective Ministries Mr Speaker Member of Parliament for Barbuda honorable Trevor Walker notes the necessity of the bill to fight crime within the country MP Walker however notes his concerns about the existing capacity in his Majesty's prison for those who will be incarcerated for gang membership and whether or not we have the capacity if we're that if we're going to be that aggressive against Crime and these G especially to allow a penal system to function properly he is also concerned about what he describes as the far-reaching implications of section 17 of the bill this stipulates that miners convicted under the legislation will be treated as adults if you're a minor all right and I want to just break it down so that I myself can understand it and you are um let me use the words of the bill you are proceeded against and convicted you should be sentenced in accordance with the provisions of this act basically sentencing you as an adult andr Aza ABS news thanks so much andr another debate on the anti-gang bill 2024 continues in parliament's lower house on Friday at 9:30 a.m. abs of course will continue to provide extensive life covered several other pieces of legislation will also be debated as part of a raft of measures intended to TP down violent crime of course we follow those stories and keep you across them Terry meanwhile members of the royal police force of Antiga and Bara found out across communities Nationwide earlier today Thomas expresses gratitude to the business Community for their continued support and timely donations we would have gone out to the business Community to solicit items food packages or for that matter everything you all do for me inspector Thomas Thanks the public for their continued support we are organization who still cares who still pretty much is concerned about the well-being and the welfare community Through visits prayers and acts of kindness we're reminded the importance of unity and empathy ensuring that no one is forgotten during their time of need shakesha Francis for abs news meanwhile inspector Thomas announces that the highly anticipated police play title chosen one has been postponed I must use this opportunity and this forum to more less um advise and inform the public that due to certain unforeseen circumstances that are way beyond our control the police drummer group is unable and will not be able to air or for that matter perform their chosen one presentation which was slated and due to be uh performed at the antia recreation grounds this weekend Saturday the 14th the police play has been rescheduled to Sunday the 28th of September 20124 at the Antiga Recreation grounds at 8:00 p.m. ticket prices remain the same inspector Thomas further apologizes on behalf of the police force for any inconvenience caused for again I just want to again apologize to the general public for any inconvenience that this may have caused due to again circumstances Way Beyond the control of the Jama group and most so the police Administration on the eve of the National Day of Prayer which has been proclaimed a half public holiday our news team took to the streets of St John's to hear the Public's thoughts on the issue the general agreement was that prayer is necessary and everyone we asked said they would pray for the country tomorrow well here's some of what they told us or actually our kicia humis was speaking with them well yes I will be are going to work in the morning but I will come in the afternoon and I will go to multi-purpose Center yes and I will pray I'm a little iffy about it cuz I think um National Day of Prayer should be like every day than just a day and waiting until something bad happen to do something about it I think it's a great initiative you know the whole country can do it more prayer Pray as you wake up prayer before meals pray for your kids pray for other people kids for the whole society on a whole so tomorrow is a great great initiative and I should be taking part it good for everybody good for the country it good for people come together and know God still alive meanwhile the labor department says the proclamation of tomorrow as a half public holiday affects all banks stores shops and public offices from noon Department patients of The Rehabilitation Department are reminded of the new location at the saking lake medical center oncology and dialysis patients are expected to be present for their appointments as well all patients whose appointments will be affected by the closure will be contacted by a member of the Staff Care team uh to reschedule their appointment not of this developing story it's a heartwarming one one about Goodwill and Outreach his mest prison received a major donation today as our Brianna Anthony reports in a generous Act of community support the London and LevelUp foundation donates a substantial amount of apparel to his Majesty's prison early Wednesday founder of London and level up Dr Terry London says this gesture is part of the foundation's broader commitment to social responsibility and Rehabilitation support these donations here today are small tokens not just of material support but of care and respect we are here to show that though Society often forget those Behind Bars we have have not London and the LevelUp team we have not forgotten you London and level up which has been supporting the community for the past year have announced their plans to donate additional items to the prison to continue their support efforts and we do not plan to do only garments we hope to do water we hope to donate food we hope to donate toiletries for example our initiatives are not um singularized or on any one particular product or service at any given time whatever area we can assist with that is what we will be doing one of the inmates of his Majesty's prison Newton slack expresses gratitude to the foundation for the timely donation noting it would make a significant impact on behalf of the inmates of his Majesty's prison we would like to say a pleasant thank you to each and everyone who have do this donation thanks it would be a fuse to everyone some who maybe come and don't have anything to move with or to use so we would use it to the our best this initiative underscores the compassion and commitment of our community Brianna Anthony for abs news the students at the Antiga and barud International Institute of Technology tech technology abbit have once again engaged in their annual ual charity drive this year the focus is on the country's teachers and helping them improve learning in the classroom the students of abbit donated much needed supplies to representatives of the Antiga and baru Union of teachers a andbut we've heard the cries of teachers over the years and we understand the plight as a result we have dedicated our spring trimester to assist with the teacher and their cries some of the items donated include notebooks binder sheets printed paper pens pencils markers and much more first vice president of a andbut robin Joseph Nathaniel was elated to receive the supplies on behalf of the teachers she says one of the areas the center focuses on is the professional development of Educators to improve learning in the classroom we believe that um when our members improve their professional practice it goes to strengthen us as a union and so part of what we try to do is workshops conferences training sessions that will augment their practice and encourage a desire for professional development encourage a desire to know more do more this developing story that we've been tracking over the past 24 hours the Inga Public Utilities Authority of the apaa says electricity has been fully restored to customers who were impacted by the power outage on Tuesday night due to a traffic crash along fars Road of course we would have reported on this in News at 10 last night he those pictures it is reported that a vehicle traveling along that farare crashed on into two utility poles causing them to snap ap's corporate Communications manager or Officer anaz Reynolds explains the process of restoring power to affected customers last night well was dead when they arrived at scene after they did their assessment they were able to isolate the area and they would have linked the affected feeders on other feeders that are coming out of the fril substation so those customers that were affected they would have received their power back within I would say about two hours after the accident some of the affected areas were the woods estate St John's Pentecostal church and that Avenue that's the loand Benjamin Avenue Drive as well as far the road govern house redcliff Street Heritage key Upper Fort Road and East bus station Reynold says the two damaged poles are scheduled for replacement this coming Sunday here's more on this meanwhile Reynolds also provides ABS news with an update on ap's undergrounding Project which aims to significantly upgrade the power infrastructure along frill Road essentially moving the infrastructure below ground those are some pictures from earlier this year when work was being carried out to move that process process ahead she says the project has been delayed due to to attention being diverted to more pressing projects in terms of removing the overhead lines and to energize the underground cables yes certainly that is something that is Forefront on our mind however what we would have had to do we would have had to shift all some of our priority workload to attend to some of the projects that we had within the electricity business unit earlier we had to do some preparation for the SIDS conference we now have to do some upgrades on our 69 line so when we look at the fville project we will definitely will be resuming that by the end of this year for Target completion of early next year well so following this developing story let's show you this particular picture because this is a picture there of Minister for agriculture lands fisheries and the blue economy honorable Anthony Smith Jr calling for greater investment and access to finance as a means of encouraging participation of Youth in the Fisher sector he also States the need for the
