3733 you can also dial 1 800 825-5951 you can email BC today cbc.ca well the first US presidential debate has wrapped and the general consensus after the performance of both candidates not good while many were questioning Joe Biden's ability to serve another term after he stumbled multiple times Donald Trump's speech contained lies and exaggeration let's take a listen back to the back and forth this guy is has increased your taxes because of the deficit number one he's increased inflation because of the debacle he left after the way he handled the pandemic he's blaming inflation and he's right it's been very bad he caused the inflation and it's killing black families and Hispanic families and just about everybody we have the Palestinians and we have everybody else rioting all over the place you talk about Charlottesville this is a 100 times Charlottesville a thousand times Char the whole country is exploding because of you under Ro v Wade you have late term abortion you can do whatever you want depending on the state you can do whatever you want we don't think that's a good thing we think it's a radical thing we think the Democrats are the radicals not the Republicans for 51 years that was a law 51 years consal scholarship said it was the right way to go 51 years and it was taken away because this guy put very conservative members on the Supreme Court he takes credit for taking it away way Well we'd like to hear from you how are you feeling after last night's presidential debate in the United States and uh what moments stood out for you if you did watch it you can call us 1 1800 825 595-604 669 3733 and you can hit pound 690 on your cell phone as well you can email us BC today at cbc.ca well Americans didn't hesitate to speak out about what they heard last last night I'm devastated I I really feel uh like um President Biden uh didn't is not performing we clearly have a huge dichotomy between one candidate that looks like he was struggling like a lot and then another candidate who was able to articulate his plan and his vision for this country I don't think either one of them showed well I think RFK Jr won the debate but he wasn't invited well I'm joined by two guests now to be with me and take your calls Errol morot more coach rather is vice chair of external relations with Republicans overseas Jovian radar is a professor of international relations and American politics at Douglas College and a registered Democrat thanks so much to both of you for joining me thank you thank you thanks for joining us on this program this afternoon um Joan start with you um what did you think of what you saw oh it was a train wreck um I uh was already a reluctant Biden voter back in 2020 and um it's incredibly difficult to uh watch the guy struggle as much as he did uh Trump obviously made many many false statements and many inflammatory and I would even say dangerous statements during the debate but it's clear that from a TV Optics point of view um that he won the debate um and of course that's going to be very much the spin it already is the spin out there um Biden I think should step aside to be perfectly honest that seemed to be uh the opinion of many um Democrats or or commentators last night is that still possible I'm not entirely sure Biden of course Came Out Swinging this morning saying that he will not step side and that he just you know had a bad day and there's already this talk about him having a cold and this sort of thing and and making excuses for the performance um I I I don't know um the fact that the debate was so early is interesting um it was planned to be this early that's very unusual normally they happen after the conventions um I almost wonder if it was this early because maybe people expected this and they wanted to have time to ask him to step aside um I don't have any proof for that it's just uh right or he agreed to these terms exactly right exactly his his team wanted it um they worked together with CNN to put this together with the special rules and everything and um he clearly did not live up to expectations and Errol what about you what were your thoughts watching last night's presidential debate well beyond the sort of obvious experience that we all had I I honestly thought that Joe Biden did slightly better than some of us expected him to he only froze up completely one time um he was unable to be understood in a lot of situations but that's kind of common and also in his defense um the incumbent usually doesn't do well in the first debate um so a lot of things to take away that at first yes it looked very bad for Biden but nobody expected this man to go off of a teleprompter and suddenly be able to speak freely without having problems um I think that the debate for format was the most interesting thing it was done in a way to sort of neutralize Trump's natural gravitas with a crowd or with one liners but in doing so it created an environment where Trump was almost held back from some of his natural tendencies that only play to his base and don't play to undecideds or moderates who might see that behavior as unpresidential um you noticed during the gulf thing Trump was the one who said let's stop being children so it was an interesting debate I wouldn't say that Trump did exceptionally well but he definitely outperformed uh President Biden substantially the question comes down to do the American people and I don't think it's spin by the way I mean everybody is saying what they're saying because we all saw it we saw a man who struggled with some simple explanations he struggled with some complex explanations and he certainly didn't give off confidence to me just as an American citizen regardless of my politics so the question comes to I don't also think that they can change him out I don't think that that's the plan Joe Biden very well is still 50/50 in this race it's just a few percentage points and it's a first debate so I wouldn't want to read too much into it would be the takeaway here it was a win for Trump but an expected win now he performed he obviously you know seemed louder and stronger more vocal and stayed focused as you said but did also repeat falsehoods including about the the uh last elections results um should does he expect that to to be accepted by the audience uh certainly he does um his his claims that he has he's he's offered CNN to have a sort of a town hall on it he wants to present his side of it now obviously is is he's no evidence well I'm I'm I'm I'm here to say that the way that he sees it and the way that his supporter sees it is that book is not closed and so whether or not that's seen as inflammatory he's still still feels that the circumstances in 2020 led to uh you know Perfect Storm now is is that correct in his court of law obviously not he's not president right now but he's entitled to have his opinion and Joe Biden is entitled to you know refute that and and a lot of his supporters if you go to the Republican party and ask you're a casual voter was that election on the up and up not was it deliberately stolen but do you did you feel confident in that election and a lot of people are going to tell you no more people are going to tell you there was something going on I don't know what it was is that misation is that fake news succeeding it doesn't matter because the election is in November and that's the real Collective cont ience of America so facts of course in a campaign go out the door a lot more than facts in real life and that's what we've been seeing with a lot of promises from Joe Biden's campaign that didn't deliver in real life whereas maybe Donald Trump talks in inflammatory ways and says certain things but when he was in office he delivered on his promises so that's the the two sides of that coin that I would look at and Joon so we've we've heard from Errol you know the his perception as well which was the observation last night of how Biden did what were your thoughts about how Trump did um he did well as far as a television audience goes and of course he has a great deal of um experience in that particular media format for many years having been um on reality TV shows and this sort of thing um having been in the media Spotlight for much of his adult life going back to his uh time in uh New York City back in the 80s and the 90s even um but I definitely think that um there will be a backlash among voters especially of course Democrats with regard to comments that Trump made certainly about January 6th as you were just alluding to um in your question with Errol but also his comments about immigrant crime were especially alarming he used superlative numbers like hundreds of thousands of people being killed by immigrants during uh his speech about this particular question his answer to this particular question and that of course Echoes quite strongly with his comments on the campaign Trail about immigrants quote poisoning the bloodline of America which is a quote that's not so far off from what we've seen with other right-wing populist leaders in different time periods as well as in the current time period as well so there will be alarms going off that this is what Trump is planning now of course the fact of the matter is Biden didn't get this message out during the debate he didn't do it in an effective way at all there's a project 2025 that's been set up by the Heritage Foundation down at Stanford University in the United States that uh has a blueprint for a radical right-wing takeover of the American government if Trump voters are not necessarily responding to that or aware of that that's a big problem but it's even a bigger problem if Democratic voters are not aware of that and I don't think Biden did a particularly good job of illustrating that it was an opportun to be frankly and a better candidate would have been able to at least make a point about the threat to American democracy that Trump poses project 2025 also has a very radical interpretation of executive power with regard to what presidents can do and uh that also is in many ways uh against American traditions of checks and balances and limited government okay so um yeah let's just uh take some calls here as we have uh quite a few people wanting to comment um thanks very much to my guest right now Errol Moro who's Vice chair of external relations with Republicans overseas and Jovan ruar is professor professor of international relations and American politics at Douglas College uh and also uh a registered Democrat we're going to take your calls asking you how you feel after last night's US presidential debate and what moments stood out for you 604 669 37331 800 82559 950 are our numbers uh we're going to hear from uh someone in the United States right right now just across the border at Point Roberts and Michael's on the line hi Michael Hi how are you thanks for having me welcome what do you think uh for standout moments unfortunately uh Biden repeatedly confusing Trump and Putin trying to people Trump constantly cozies up to dictators like Putin Trump even famously told Putin to do what whatever he wants uh Biden stumbled over his words and repeatedly said the name Trump instead of Putin and didn't get that message out um I also while I was on hold heard your guest say something about Trump delivering on its promises I want to remind it the world one of Trump's promises in his first before he was first elected was water boarding and worth in torture to bring back torture and uh more new wor PRS of torture that has an effect on dictators and tyrants and torturers around the world I think Biden and the Democrats need to remind people of that uh his constant stirring up violence coing up to dictators those are not popular if Biden decides or the party decides for him he needs to step down uh Chris Murphy the senator of Connecticut would be an excellent choice I think the American people would like him as a leader choices uh Chris Mur um because he's reasonable he uh is a good communicator across the board okay and Michael bid that are popular but has it together that's the question um before the Democrats right now is what what to do after uh last night's uh debate in light of uh Biden's performance thanks so much for the call from Point Roberts let's head to Bowen Island and antoon is on the line now hi Anton hi Michelle how are you very well thanks for calling what did you think last night well I only watch it briefly because I was expecting the worst and I knew it in forehand already that what would happen um and we I think we all did and um I would like to point out that the Democratic party made a strategic mistake when they uh chose Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders Bernie Sanders was doing the right thing okay you're going back to 2016 then yeah because basically that's that's where it all started and we see the effects of it today still we're still basically in that whole era uh and I also want to to your two guests you have like the whole if you want to destroyed Society have two parties Democrats and Republicans and and make everything so divisive it doesn't work so uh uh um yeah this is a really difficult time for most Americans no doubt but there are Fascist forces happened and they must realize that also with the what your guest mentioned about the project 2025 that's just really bad stuff you're getting to what are the choices as well before the voters um this November Anon thank you very much uh I'll put that question first about um did the Democrats make a mistake as as Anton says going back to 2016 I mean where does this leave the Democratic party what kind of Democratic party are we looking at right now Jan Oh um a deeply illegitimate one one that doesn't appear to stand for anything particularly coherent um of course Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden and of course before that Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are representatives of the Centrist Wing or even some might say the right of Center wing of the democratic party um neoliberalism uh lots of budget cuts lots of handouts to corporations um that being the sort of Norm for how uh policies would uh uh be implemented uh not an emphasis on public Spirit or you know social uh togetherness which is of course the vision of somebody more like Bernie Sanders who I happen to be more of a ENT supporter of in the past having made phone calls for his campaign in 2016 and 2020 myself and as I said before I'm not a big fan of Joe Biden either um and um I only voted for him because I felt like of course had no choice other than to stop Trump this time around the damage is done right there's there's this sort of project 2025 issue but then also Biden has lost a lot of the youth vote around his foreign policy especially with regard to Israel and Gaza so The Perfect Storm of forces in terms of setting Trump up for a relatively easy Victory maybe the polls haven't moved yet as uh the other guest has uh indicated the polls haven't moved yet it's still relatively 50/50 um odds makers are certainly saying that Biden's chances of winning have gone down from about 38% to about 23% this morning according to the official odds lines from Vegas um so um I think that we will see movement in the coming days on this matter and um the Democrats are in a very tough spot it's interesting that some a previous caller mentioned Chris Murphy um he you know I don't have any problem with Chris Murphy but the problem is name recognition and also as uh the the other guest mentioned there isn't maybe enough time for the Democrats to replace Biden with somebody else to get the kind of traction needed for that sort of long campaign season that we have in the United States as as opposed to Canada where we have a much shorter campaign season ER let let me ask you as well Anton talked about you know you have this deep division um between the two parties the supporters of two party the two parties um in the United States what about the Republican party what how would you describe where it is right now then oh I would say it's a big tent for example I'm an immigrant from a Muslim country my entire family is from a Muslim country on one side everybody's voting for Trump um you know you've got record support in the Hispanic community building in the Republican party in general for the last 20 years but now you're seeing it at record numbers you're seeing for the first time Trump making actual statistical inroads with the African-American Community um you know Trump had a had a line a lot of people liked to laugh at which was if you have patriotism in your heart there's no room for prejudice but as an immigrant to America you know one of the great things that I I experienced as as a child was seeing all the diversity working together and I think that that country that I grew up in faded away post 911 you had you know distrust and and and the sort of malignant tumor in our culture so I think the Republican party has capitalized on this new generation younger voters are are trending conservative young men especially obviously and then also you have the data that shows that if only married people voted Republicans would win every election so you have you have cultural situations where where there's um groups of people who Trend towards the Republican party and those people it doesn't matter of their race or ethnicity or or economic background people who that I grew up with in Virginia you know there's I I grew up with all sorts of people and some people told me Errol you know I went from lower class to middle class and I'm I'm back down there and I feel that because of inflation and now that's not Direct Joe Biden created inflation as one man it's it's just a president but but in the end the Republican party has become a very big tent and what it was in the age of bush is completely gone we we almost don't even consider him a republican anymore so the part's changed dramastic drastically and that's because of Donald Trump okay well thanks to both of you very much for your time I appreciate it thank you thank you Erol Mor coach is vice chair of external relations with Republicans overseas Jovan red desuar is a professor of international relations in American politics at Douglas College and a registered Democrat it is 12:26 now Pacific Time now let's head to the University of Maryland for some more reaction to the debate last night Tom schaer is a professor of political science and author of white rural rage the threat to American democracy and here's what he had to say on the Early Edition this morning I'm lied almost every sentence in response to every question if he even answered the question as asked and that is considerable and dangerous but that's nothing new from Trump and as expected uh the real story of course is Biden had a disasterous performance and he confirmed essentially Trump trump campaign and and the conservative media allies uh to the Republican party and Trump and what they've been saying about Biden which is like he's not fully there and not lucid and he did look glassy eyed he stumbled and more than just his normal stutter uh issues which he's always had in other debates it wasn't like this and he didn't really deliver the message that he promised which is you know Trump is a threat to democracy democracy is on the ballot and that Trump just cares about himself and doesn't care about the country or the Constitution or the fate and state of our democracy that the messages that we were promised we would hear from Biden uh but he was never really able to articulate that because he was a little bit all over the place that is professor of political science at the University of Maryland Tom schaer he was speaking with stevenh Quinn on the Early Edition this morning we're going to get back to more of your calls asking you how are you feeling after last night's US presidential debate uh 604 669 3733 and stay tuned after the news we'll talk about uh Canadian pop culture and we have a bit of a trivia a trivia test and a contest for you you can win some prizes as well that's after 12:30 [Music] [Music] we're taking your emails too and Fay writes I watched the debate and felt that while President Biden Biden did not perform very well Mr Trump lied and lied and lied I don't think anything that came out of his mouth was a truth President Biden won in my opinion in the fact that he stated truths rather than lies Liam writes watching the debate last night really cemented for me a millennial something that many in my generation have felt for years that we have always lived in a gerontocracy across the US and Canada our politics are run by and for the boomer generation policies from the environment to housing to education are designed to enrich and Empower them over their children and grandchildren as their rain grows shorter and shorter we are seeing the increasingly surreal results of these shortsighted privileges no individual As Old As Trump or Biden should be in office never mind running thanks for your emails and uh Jerry is up next now in Vancouver hi Jerry hello what did you think uh I don't know why the two gentlemen from a while ago did not admit that either candidate absolutely demonstrated that they are not leadership material um it it was absolutely disgusting um for but I have to say I feel like I'm what is it living in a a glass house throwing stones as a Canadian but um Biden it it just he cannot do it and my point is at first I could not believe that the debate was this far in advance of November now I am so glad that it is because it will give any Democrat that is right thinking or logical give them time at the Democrat convention to come up with a different candidate because this man can not continue he can't function he has got the stubbornness of so many elderly and I'm in my 70s as well um that he's not going to give in but he has to be out and poor Camala is um damned by being his vice president so it's got to be somebody else but I I I just cannot and frankly Trump supporters um when I lived in the states the people that were Democrats are now so far to the right they are such extreme Republicans that they don't even see his lies as lies so um anyway let's just hope that the Democrats will come up with a different candidate I don't know if that's possible but I think it is he can have his time out until January and a new person Jerry thank you for the call that's Jerry in Vancouver it sounds like she lived in the United States for a while as well that wraps it up for our conversation about last night's US in it we tend to have some pride um and a little bit of like you know do you know this do you know that like what's your deep knowledge of Canadian pop culture but why don't we start with a question to begin and Lisa you have one first I do um so um yes our the first question is the first Canadian to ever win an Oscar in 1929 was also the second ever to win best actress and the first for a role know too much you know too much no Lisa can we play Oh whis exactly I like those prizes and can I play okay um someone who's kind of a favorite Vancouver resident um and character is nard War the human surette longtime vancouver-based you know College radio DJ music journalist interviewer who consistently Stomps and stuns his celebrity interview we he's amazing I don't know how he National Treasure he is let's just call it for what it is right PA a spade nard is a a National Treasure and um he just comes up with these facts from like very deep in each celebrity's life history now he doesn't always just do celebrities he sometimes interviews politicians say if there's a campaign uh he goes on the campaign Trail and he plays a certain Hasbro game with politicians so he's done this with a former uh Prime Minister Paul Martin late NDP leader Jack Leighton former Premier NBC Christy Clark and John Horgan um during the election campaign here so our question to you is what is the game that nard War the human surette plays with politicians when he has a moment to interview them you can call us 604 669 3733 1 800 825 5950 on your cell phone you can hit pound 690 it's a very physical game it is I me it's quite impressive people know how to do it and that's what's the most fun about it is because of the physicality you know you get these stuffy politicians suits and whatnot and doing this thing the thing and it's fun is the name of the game and if you know the name of the game you give us a call uh again 604 669 3733 800 825 5950 is our number I'm joined by uh my colleagues my friends who are just pop culture what uh obsess Champions likeit problem but Champion sounds nicer yeah I know it sounds like you you actually officially involved yeah and it sounds like a real thing that you could get awarded for as opposed to why do you know that uh let's see if we have someone who knows the answer Tom is in Vancouver hi Tom hey how you doing I am well thanks for calling are you a Nord War fan yeah he's he's great he's hilarious he really is interviewer and a very good interviewer it's true I mean and he really leans into the into the awkward moments doesn't question and move on because we are not getting any bites shall we just give the answer to that I'm just going to give the answer I'm going to give the answer because we have a lot of gold I have to say we also dipped into grant Lawrence's uh trivia trivia I'm reading a note right now we have someone on the line who knows the answer oh wow I know this is very exciting yeah okay we're going to yep did you know that person's Canadian well yeah I mean I was just last week at um Deer Lake Park to see Vampire Weekend oh yes and they were talking about all their many trips to couver and their first one was in 2008 everyone cheered and they said we were interviewed by nard so it was a big moment and I thought yeah that's a big you know right of passage absolutely for any artist International not you know when they come here if nard decides to interview you big deal deal and and several times like they'll come back to be interviewed by it's an experience and and part of it is the things that the extra stuff he does like the game this game like this game I know has he played it with with musicians as well but he also often has records or like gifts that will trigger a memory we're just going just fan fangirling over what's not yeah theot that is also a huge part of it who does it that's not a thing that's just a Keep On Rocking In The Free World yeah okay uh nard if you're out there you have some fans here palinka at the in SHO swap hello palinka hi are you I am well thanks for calling I kind of think I know know the answer is it the Hasbro hip flip the hip flip the Hasbro where there's a little flip that you got to do in order to turn this uh this flap around um pinka congratulations thank you so much I'm a huge fan of the CBC you're all my constant companions I live alone so I'm really excited we're glad to have you now you're going to be accompanied by some uh BC today uh treats as well sweet sweet can I give a quick plug to some of our North shwap music events oh sure yeah yeah so we have Friday Night Live out here on the North Shoop um I believe that's near the Hub in Scotch Creek and then there's also BTS has a lot of music events and of course for Canada Day there are things going on in Chase as well as on the nor schwap so I hope everybody has a wonderful weekend and a great Canada day and you too pelinka congratulations thanks for the call you're welcome thank you I bet you Tom is just going oh I knew close the hip flip yes although that Robo game sounded fun too okay um why don't we ask another question we got two winners so far Caris take it away okay this is food related oh yes all right food related question a Greek Canadian invented this very controversial type of handheld food in 1962 too ooh contro it's it is highly divisive I mean you know we live in a polarized world yes we we've had prime ministers weigh in on this type of food and it was invented by a Greek Canadian in 1962 what divisive controversial handheld so that's a clue for you handheld food was invented by a Greek Canadian give us a call 604 669 3733 you can dial 18 00825 5950 or uh hit pound 690 on your cell phone so we are playing can pop pop quiz hot shot right now here on VC today that's a pop that's a pop culture reference isn't it Lisa um and Caris are with me we're just going to talk pop culture as well you know we were just talking about American politics in the last half hour people feel you know they they watch the debate closely feel kind of invested as well even as Canadians or just watch in it closely and we have the reputation for being inundated with American pop culture too not just politics um but how important is it to to look at Canadian Canadian pop culture and how deep does it go oh it's huge it's hugely important for us to talk about our own pop culture right I mean we're we live next to a giant elephant of Pop Culture um and so you know nurturing and loving our own is like it's what makes makes us enjoy being Canadian I mean h Johnson and Joanne McLoud body break come on who doesn't remember that right and that was that was so awesome at on multiple levels um and like Oh The Tragically hips final tour with gour Downey that was a Canadian pop culture moment that brought the country together yeah it really did um so yeah I I think I think Canadian pop culture is hugely important yeah your thoughts on Canadian pop culture oh yeah I mean I think that unfortunately that a lot of really kind of feel more Canadian when we see one of ours go somewhere else as you said to go hang out with the elephant South you know we see them all you know like doing well with comedy we we're so excited when they come back when Ryan Reynolds comes back or Seth Rogan comes back and we know his voice when he was he did the uh stops on the transl right on Sky Train um and and also it's just uh I think it's really nice to feel that pride in our country from people who do travel I mean I'm a big fan of the smartless podcast and will Arnette being Canadian he mentions it a an awful lot and you know and he can't mention it enough to me no it's true I am also a big fan of that PO that podcast as well but are there any memories that you have of like of being introduced to Canadian pop culture and you were just like yes this is a big moment do you know what I love is the Heritage minute yes I'm a huge fan of the Heritage minute they've got some new ones out there right now I'm learning about important people in Canada you know know figures people that I didn't even know existed and I'm like oh wow cool and they're told in these very accessible ways right it's a minute and it's almost like made for social media because it's it's it's short sweet and is very enlightening too uh and then you can also do a parody which is also fun the parody Heritage is also very enjoyable what with a parody I mean I don't know oh my oh there's there are lots of them out there I W uh I can't even choose Lisa anything that stands out for you well just kind of a recent one I'm a big fan of romcoms um I don't know if either of you saw I love you man uh with Paul Rudd and Jason seagull yes oh okay well um you have to see that one but in the uh in the movie they're they're becoming friends these two guys and one of the things they bond over is their love of Rush and uh they go to the concert and actually Rush shows up in the movie too of course that's I remember just feeling this oh wow it's it's rush and you know I know and you know I I I feel a certain affection as a hard rock fan of Music the the way that Russ has changed the musical landscape throughout the world is is something to behold it's something to behold um these are the bands that I was introduced to when I first arrived in Canada as well you know like Rush Trooper Trooper yeah lover boy and this is like this was my introduction to Canadian music and then there was I started listening to Sarah mclocklin and so I got to interview her and I said yeah you were one of the first Canadian Stars I listen to and I mean come on look at all the things that she's been able to do I mean she changed she helped change music in the '90s well Lilith Fair is I mean I Ian I don't know what to say about that except for it was a moment it was a moment yes it was all right we asked the question who is the Greek Canadian who invented or what did a Greek Canadian invent that was a food a handheld food that is highly controversial and Kim is on the line for Maple Ridge with a guest hi Kim h I I'm just realizing I don't know if I know it but I was just wondering if it was a Donaire oh but that's no that is incorrect but sounds delicious um the Donaire the Donaire is not typically very controversial as far as I know it's controversial in no it's not it's just delicious yes I think uh that's the that's the consensus Donaire is officially um is is officially delicious apparently the official food of Halifax I'm told but there you go Kim I'm sorry that you were wrong but thank you for playing thank you have a great weekend Paul is up next in Vancouver hi Paul do you think you know well I was a boy back in 62 so all a sudden my hometown onaro was getting these places called pizza shops ah you know something you can now hold in your hand yes and you know now the second thing that comes to mind in the' 60s still is a gentleman that was a um they cook for a Greek ship in Toronto whatever is they were docked and appar he he jump ship but how he fed himself was making handheld sub sandwiches oh submarines so I don't know is it pizza or submarine CU that's what comes to mind mind you know what you're so close but there's a reason why this particular food is controversial and we do need I mean do you want to tell us what kind of pizza well I was just thinking any pizza you know I don't know maybe is it I don't know I just I I think I say I was a child at the time so yeah close so close but you're not right there I also just learned something about the submarine sandwich yeah that makes sense Paul thank you very much I'm going to have to let you go but you were so close and Richard and Vancouver do you know what controversial handheld food we're talking about that was invented by G Canadian is it the Hawaiian pizza yes yes it was the Hawaiian pizza yeah why I don't understand why that's controversial it's tasty I am very Pro pineapple yeah me too me too put it on anything where do you stand on that Richard um yeah I love Hawaiian pizza absolutely okay so again we don't know but it is there are people who say no do not even people get very angry for some reason yes they do I know they they get very upset about putting pineapple on Pizza we all have and tell us more about this congratulations Richard you get a BC today prize pack tell us more about this Greek Canadian who was behind all of this all right well a Sam Panopoulos Greek born Canadian and created this First Hawaiian pizza ever at Satellite restaurant in chadam Kent Ontario in 1962 and apparently this is according to Wikipedia he was uh inspired by his experience preparing Chinese dishes which commonly mix sweet and savory flavors and so we started experimenting with a little salty meats and a little pineapple and voila it's so interesting to see how different um foods and cultural Foods adapt to um life in Canada and to Canadian taste and audiences because Chinese food has done the same thing you know Sushi and the invention of the California role as well uh do we have time for one more question I think we do let's let's ask uh your other trivia question just the last one yeah so the Juno Awards is helpfully compiled the list of the top selling Canadian singles of all time the top of the list for bestselling physical sales is of course selenon My Heart Will Go On according to the junos selenon did this many takes one recording the song So how many takes did it take Selen Dion to record that song how many takes did selon need to record My Heart Will Go On give us a call right now we have about a minute left in the show 1 800 825 uh 5950 604 669 3733 let us know how many takes do you think it took Seline Dion to record the bestselling physical single of all time from from a Canadian artist My Heart Will Go On give us a call right now um it's so it's been so much fun to talk to both of you uh well thank you can I just say a quick shout out to another controversial Canadian beverage invented here the Caesar I don't know the idea behind clam juice vodka and tomato juice but thank you you know it's impressive I also did not know was controversial I just know that it's called something else in other other places or have a slightly different Bloody Mary is usually what but yeah we yeah is Bloody Mary without the clam juice though yes so you add the clam juice and everything then you've got yourself a Canadian drink that's right invented in Calgary Lisa and Caris thank you so much very welcome Happy Canada day happy Canada Day that's Lisa Christensen and Caris hog my colleagues here at CBC [Music] n
