is Carlos Mendoza a lock for manager of the Year yes he is veto I don't see any way you can tell me that Carlos Mendoza will not be voted the national league manager of the year and there are many reasons why Carlos Mendoza comes in here he changes the culture completely you have a team that's 11 games under 500 started 0 and five started 0 and five we don't even talk about that anymore we only talk about the 11 games under 5005 people were calling it a Dead on Arrival season in the first five games of the year there's examples and we'll talk about the one that we just witnessed and it was the managerial job he did with the bullpen using five different relievers going out there getting Tyler McGill before the lead had evaporated bringing in Alex Young knowing that the Red Sox had a lot of Lefty stacked and all the moves that he made five moves on Wednesday he has set the tone and he created a ball club that has the Swagger and the personality and the resolve are back I don't think we could say it anymore no they're still here I mean like since we recorded they've I don't think it's applicable right swept another series they swept all the socks the socks are the socks are in a basket somewhere all the laundry's been put away should I take my socks off right now nah you don't want that no I don't want that dude you've been you've been on your Feats all day I have but the Mets are in they just the Mets tied their longest winning streak seven in a row things feel so good right now and in a game that like was a nailbiter up until a point up until that there was a charity wathon it was a tight game for Sher I mean the Mets hit the Grand Slam and you think that okay this one's over and then the Red Sox come back with three runs and they make it a ball game and then it was a stalemate there for a while and we'll talk about a lot of the managerial decisions made by Carlos Mendoza in a big segment later throughout the night and he push he pushed every button correctly and then uh like you said the Red Sox bullpen couldn't find the strike zone in the eighth inning the Mets scor four in the first and they score four in the last time to bat in the eighth inning and they make it a clean sweep so the Mets have now won seven straight games when we were watching the Braves seemingly win every single night from a distance scoreboard watching you're sitting there you're thinking to yourself man this stinks that they don't lose and I wish that we could do that and guess what now we're doing that and I'm not trying to get cocky because I know that's not realistic to what would this streak I think I know I have an idea of what this streak would be called This is the season's over streak after the game in Arizona after the game in Arizona where everybody was like that's it that's probably the end of the year that's probably the nail in the coffin season's over look that that third game in Arizona and we talked to David Peterson earlier today we had a great conversation with David you'll see that on Friday you will and you guys should definitely make sure you tune in for that one because David is incredibly cerebral and he gave us incredible answers and we talked about his birthday start and all this but that game in Arizona that Thursday game um him getting that double play off the bat of Kevin Newman and the Mets keeping the score tied and then Jose glacius eventually coming up with that clutch two out hit in the ninth inning taking the lead and Edwin Diaz getting himself back on track and he's full back on track now we saw the slider dominant Sunday in Chicago and tonight on Wednesday it's Wednesday it's Wednesday sometimes I lose track of the days that's what happens hard it whenever you work a series it always feels like it's a Sunday for some reason yes but it's Wednesday and Edwin his last three pitches 100 plus on the radar the fast ball was looking Prime Edwin Diaz so Edwin is shaking off whatever plague him back which feels like forever ago now because the Mets haven't lost a game since that night closers have bad games there's there's only one guy in the history of the sport he had some real bad he picked some real bad times to have bad games I mean in Texas on Tuesday night there was a pretty bad game by a closer there was if you know you know but but my point is like there's it's not like there's no closer who's just ever went out there except like Edwin Diaz like closers have years like Edwin Diaz in 2022 it felt like there was never a doubt in your mind anytime Edwin Diaz came out but he still blew some saves that year he did I mean dude this is crazy the Mets are now 12 games over 500 and uh you know 11 under to 11 over feels incredible 11 under to 12 over Steve do you have any comments about today's game uh OMG OMG that's fair you want to talk about the Jets okay we'll start talking about that soon but to I mean the ride that we've watched the ride we've witnessed and I know a lot of people talk about 2022 and you know trying to draw parallels to this season because that Series in Atlanta is blooming the September that the 2022 Mets were having even at this time in September in 2022 something felt a miss that three game series after the Dodgers left we had Timmy trumpet and then the Mets won on September 1st the four o00 game against LA and then the Nationals came to town and the Mets lost two out of three games and something didn't feel right and then shortly after that Starley Marte was hit by Mitch Keller and he went on the injured list then the Cubs came in and they swept the Mets and you started to just feel like it was not heading in the right direction although I know none of us wanted to accept it you know what I actually I said something out loud I just started working with the team and I remember watching the Marlin Series right before they went to Miami here and it was those games that like the Mets were like barely Escobar had to walk off but the Mets had to like come back in the nth and I remember like everybody going crazy being like yeah they won like let's get it cuz like and I remember wasn't right I sat in a corner by myself and I was like if they're barely winning games against the Marlins right now like I don't know what we're going to do in the of the next few weeks Atlanta facing that lineup that just never stopped hitting this feels so different like this team is playing incredible baseball in all facets of the game veto like go back in your life as a Mets fan and think about all the years where like this is where the wheels came off yeah I mean 2007 2008 we experienced that um but right now this team the starting 20 2019 2019 yep 2021 2021 I mean like there's a lot of times and like people have made that people said this year a lot of people Jimmy Kimmel said it I believe Max weiner said it a lot of people said hey you know what maybe they start off poorly and they end great right now it feels it feels like that could happen it does and you know our last episode we posed the question as we've been doing and we asked do the Mets have the best starting pitching rotation in the National League and there was a bit of a visceral reaction to uh a lot of the great listeners and look we we first of all we love the interaction we love that you guys challenge Us in the things that we say it's great that's why we're doing this show we're talking we're giving our opinions we're raising ideas if you guys don't agree with them please feel free to call as you have been but also comment on Twitter comment on YouTube let us know what you think but after this three game series and that number you can call is a good point 302 61526 that's 302 61526 there you go so veto gave you that number now I'm going to give you a number you love numbers the 370 ra that we told everyone the Mets had as a starting rotation since June 13th best in the National League was lowered to 366 after the three game sweep after sevy's one-run performance on Monday in game one after David Peterson throws one of the best starts if not the best start of his major league career in game two and Tyler McGill gutted out four plus innings in game three the starting staff is legit and you know I know I did a lot of commenting on YouTube it's all in good faith it's all in good fun David Peterson has changed this rotation completely what he did on Tuesday night and we talked with him about the high fast ball and I think the high fast ball I'd love to talk to Jeremy Hefner because sha manah has make that happen sha manah has been dominating with that high heat David Peterson has been dominating and dominated on Tuesday with high fast balls there were multiple at bats where he beat Red Sox batters up in the zone with that fast ball Tyler McGill is pounding the strike zone uh with the high fast ball up in the zone Jose Canan is a different kind of pitcher he is a true quintessential ground ball pitcher when he's right he's generating ground balls he's always he's he's dotting the corners he's dotting the edges especially living low in the strike zone but it seems like all Mets pitchers and Mets pitchers with the foram fastb I looked into this at the highest whiff rate of any pitching staff in Major League Baseball I'm talking starter reliever whatever it is with the four seam fastball so they're preaching heaters and queens and it's been working the Met starting staff continues to roll and now the bullpen veto and you know what I think this is a perfect time because I think it's time for the top five moments of Mets Red Sox I I'll give my Bullpen note later you brought up the bullpen number five moment on the list Reed Garrett game two gets out of the seventh inning keeps that one run lead and uh that's just we're not going to get to we're not going to get to October baseball if this Bullpen isn't coming through that was a massive moment um like you mentioned Reed Garrett needed that too tying run and scoring position the Mets were up two to nothing Jose B put a couple of Runners on Reed Garrett comes in puts out the flame we talked about this with David Peterson we've talked about it just an hour conversations about the infield defense behind this pitching staff and how they have turned so many ground balls into outs and they are constantly and they did it again in game three turning some ground balls into multiple outs for Garrett to get out of that inning Place goes nuts we got the lights flashing seventh inning stretch Lazy Mary having a good time Mark Vientos bottom of the seventh inning bang easy power 420 plus the straightway center field gives the Mets the 3 to1 lead that was a huge double play ball that Reed Garrett through getting out of that inning he also had a big strike out right before that so that was a massive moment I don't think in the top five moments we're going to talk about the consecutive three consecutive innings in game three of this series ended on ground ball double plays the fifth inning the sixth inning and the seventh inning Alex Young wascar brabon and Danny Young all threw double play balls to get out of innings with Runners on base consecutively it's been a theme if you haven't picked up on it it's it's happening almost every night the infield defense and the Mets pitching staff throwing that ground ball when they need it coming up clutch none clutcher than what red Garrett did number four moment on the list David Peterson has himself a birthday sets a career high 11 strikeouts and has what at this moment who knows what the rest of the season will provide but at this moment is the best start of his career best start of his career and and we said this with David I remember the Padre start the Saturday in San Diego and a lot of people said man this is the biggest start of this guy's career and he goes out there and he tosses a gem ground balls left and right I think 11 ground ball outs that night he made two starts and they were against the two tougher teams that Mets play cuz obviously he didn't face the white socks and everyone's like man this is a massive start especially after what happened in game two you want to win that series and everyone's like oh David Peterson man this is the biggest start of his life what does he do seven strong Innings no problem again in the biggest start of his life and then against the Red Sox because these games are so important he goes out there what does he do strikes out a career-high 11 batters unbelievable you know it's a random game that I was watching where I was like I need David Peterson to win this game what uh I believe he was pitching the night McDonald's changed their profile picture to Grimace okay in a Mets Hat okay and I was watching that game and I was just like please don't make this be the I think in Texas yeah yeah and and me and me and Janie who now works for the Red Sox mhm sorry jie we're watching that game TTY we're texting each other and I remember being like I remember actually saying to her before that game I actually I was like if there's a guy want on the map tonight it's David Peterson and that was early because David Peterson didn't make his debut until I think late May early June he also had a start in DC uh July 4th weekend I think it was the night that JD Martinez and Jose glaus homer an extra innings and he was in control it was that night where I kind of started to feel like David Peterson has found something that is going to work more often than not at the major league level and boy I mean that was the understatement of the century because the Mets are 14 and three and David Peterson starts the hip surgery makes you realize that like sometimes it's not it's might not even be control issue it might not be actual pitching it's it's the mechanic of your body it's a physical ailment it's he's a big guy yeah he's a big guy that foreen fastball velocity the effective velocity because he has his his release point on the extension he gets he gets like over 7t of extension which means he literally has less distance to travel once the ball leaves his hand before getting to home PL and on the batter so he's throwing 9495 which is pretty pretty hard when you have to defend against the sweeper to the back foot of the righty and the Sinker and the change up that's been a really effective weapon for David Peterson but he has just put it all together remember this is a guy that was a first round pick out of the University of Oregon um the Mets had high hopes for him when they took him and you know we say it on future of flushing development's not linear and that doesn't just stop in the minor leagues guys are always learning and always tinkering I mean you hear about sea Mania and changes he's made this season he watched a Chris Sail start apparently and saw Chris saale dropping his arm angle and said hey I could do that too baseball's weird manah last year started throwing a sweeper and had great success with it Christian Scott learned how to throw a pitch off pitching ninja videos guys are never learning and they're never they're never they never they're never not learning never not learning and they never they're never they're always evolving always watching tape evolving evolving is the word and that's what David Peterson has done and it's beautiful to see it's he's been incredible and you know we just we hope he keeps it up because man it's nice when he goes out there you just have the utmost confidence and he can get himself out of trouble with the ability to throw the two ball this isn't our this is not our main topic for the episode but like you know what a future episode is going to be titled how David Peterson became an ace no if David Peterson if David Peterson was healthy all year would he be sa young you know I've seen some people say that online and it's really not that crazy at all the ra is under three and the FIP has now come under four um you know he he's not a huge strikeout guy but you don't have to be but he has shown us that he can be I think he had nine against the Orioles I think he had he had a to start before that so he can be a big strikeout guy for sure you keep the pitch count economical when you're when you're getting quick outs he does it in a lot of different ways and people talking about the exit velocity and the expected batting average being a little bit high again when you have a defense like the Mets have behind him they convert balls and play into out so I don't really I'm not too worried about you know xba because he's inducing so many ground balls that I take my chances with what's behind him on those on those ground balls what's number three all right the number three moment of Mets Red Sox game two Mark ventos straightaway center field home run we talked about it he knew it he knew it dude it's just so much fun to watch Mark ventos turn into and we've said it week in and week out a Bonafide major League Superstar look there were some people last year that you know just said ah I'm not ever going to see it this could be a guy maybe he's 28 29 he puts it all together remember maybe you'll dock some one day and say who it was I'll never do that I'm too much of a mench to do that but this guy was I think I've said this on this podcast early on in his minorly career and really throughout his minorly career he has been a top five Prospect in the Met system for a reason he's still only what 24 years old and he still has an outside shot of hitting 30 home runs this season to me the most impressive thing is the defense he's worked so hard at it the arm strength is is great it's always been there but he's been a vacuum down at third base he's been making all of the plays I I never doubted the power you know I used to watch him in Bingington and I would see him go opposite field in these big cavernous minor league stadiums with tall walls throughout and he would make them look small with just the raw power that he possesses he's a big guy you know I I feel like fans if you're not up close and personal to some of these players all these guys are big don't get me wrong I remember I met Alex cor back in 09 the Mets had a workout in City Field right before it opened up and you know a lot of guys signed autographs cor was on the 09 met no no I know but I don't remember the work I I went I went to the St John's game I went to the Red Sox they had a workout before they went on the road it was it was if you had a package you were invited I had I had ticket package in 09 I know dude I got beltran's autograph Sheffield I remember Jerry Manuel I had a ticket package in 09 I'm like Furious right now yeah this happened and I remember I met Alex Kora and Alex cor is not a guy who like strikes you when you see him on TV as necessarily big and I remember just you know I was I think a senior in high school and I was like this guy is huge but Mark vieto is a big tall drink of water and he has gotten stronger and he's going to continue to get stronger again only 24 years old I mean I think I like to think I'm getting stronger and I'm 33 now I'm on my decline wild Mark's on the incline all right this is a 40 home run hitter one day majorly baseball number two I'm getting stronger V okay number two met Red Sox Francisco Lindor Fifth Season 30 home runs Francisco Lindor day in day out night in Night Out is proving why he should be an L MVP yeah only one player in major league history minimum 50% of games played at shortstop has had more 30 home run Seasons at position it is Alexander Emanuel Rodriguez who say what you want for my money growing up there were two players who I consider to be the best I love day Rod I'm not going to like I'm not going to lie I've said this to before I I I only non-met Jersey I ever wanted to buy it was a rod it was Barry Bonds and that was it so for FR and then Ernie Banks is the other guy that's had five such home run uh 30 Homer Seasons as a short stop so incredible company for Francisco for him to reach that Milestone that number on September 3rd is massive he has a good chance of getting to 38 which is his career high he also stole Third Base so he's now four steel shy of 30 uh don't want to jinx anything but imagine a selfish shortstop didn't make the greatest Short Stop of his generation move over in positions I mean what could we have seen you're not wrong you're not wrong I mean it was his spot that's fine but I know but I'm just saying you know yeah but look londor continues to just put this team on his back on both sides of the ball even on Wednesday night his last that bat in the eighth inning he roped one to right field that I think Rob ref sneer snagged so he's just locked in right now the takes are great Also earlier in the year when he was struggling he was chasing a lot especially the pitches down in the dirt he is spitting on everything that's not exactly where he wants it in the strike zone and that to me is what's most impressive he is just locked in at the plate he is not chasing whatsoever and Lefty righty it doesn't matter he's just all over everything is he having the most clutch season on Mets position players had I don't know where he ranks in WPA you should have asked me before the show I know but that's a good question for future right it is a good question for the future because like it's like it's like Mendoza said the other day it's like anytime Francisco Lindor comes up at a big moment you just feel like he's going to come through because he is that locked in right now I mean he's had some massive hits we've talked about some of his biggest hits a couple episodes ago we talked about that after the San Diego series when we posed the question is Francisco Lor possibly the NL MVP and since we brought that up and I know some people also had brought that up at the time but since that series the case has only gotten stronger he hit the big home run to make it 2 to2 in Arizona that Thursday when we were in Lehigh Valley he hits the big two- run home run on Tuesday to put the Mets on the board here he hit the Grand Slam in San Diego look it's it's going to be a tight race I'm not sitting here making a prediction as to what's going to happen I want to shout out Dylan Hornick who had a hilarious tweet on Wednesday after Francisco snagged the line drive that ended the eighth inning with Phil maton getting out of that jam he tweeted that uh Francisco Lor is playing gold gloves shortstop and uh sh Otani is quote watching Coco melon on his iPad while his team is in the field and I found that really funny so credit credit to Dylan Hornick that that put a big smile on my face I know that uh that tweet's banging right now getting a lot of getting a lot of quote tweets getting a lot of getting a lot of interaction so but it's true if this team gets into the playoffs you can't not give it to him that's what I think the key is I think it's do they get in and how do they get in and how does he factor into them getting in and I said this last the doctors almost have an identical record to last year before they had sh of course I said it last year I said it last episode I'll say it again there is a lot more story to write here we don't know what's to come over the last 22 games when the Mets go to Atlanta Francisco Lor goes off the way he did in that series July 2022 down there at truis Park or whatever it's called those Philly games those Atlanta games those are that's the big test look if the Mets can go to Atlanta and they can reverse what happened in 2022 and he's a big part of it that's that changes everything I mean like there's a lot that I think is trending in the Mets Direction this year I said this on a few a few weeks ago and John asked me to edit it out of the episode I said what was it when I said that do you think that if the white sock break the most losses in a single season record that the Mets curse can be reversed and we could just go on to being happy but the thing is no one's ever even called it a curse no one refers to that no but they don't but I was thinking about it and I was just thinking about the LOL Mets and I was thinking about like the stigma that this franchise has had for years and years and I was like where does it all stem back to it stems back to can anybody here play this game and I was like what damn it Casey what if we can move past that and then it got me thinking and then I'm like wait now what if now think about everything that's coming together storyline wise what if they could go to Atlanta take two out of three or sweep and they could take that spot the opposite of 2022 what if they can go on this unbelievable September like Philly did to them in 2007 I mean there's so many things right now that the Mets can reverse and just turn into their favor that like I'm just I'm just hyped up on story exercising all the demons um I yeah know you I saw your face like brighten up a little you like that I'm down I'm definitely down and if I'm not saying you wouldn't I'm not saying you're like I don't want that to happen but I'm saying I saw spark when your I like oh he's right these are these would be some magical things there are many things that the Mets could undo and we could all as Mets fans just whitewash all the terrible things we've experienced in the last 20 20 something years but the last thing I want to say about Lindor is um I we still have a number one moment after this I was out in the stands for a couple Innings tonight and the one thing that I noticed the most was those MVP chants are getting louder and louder oh yeah and keep that up guys it's it's great it's fun I know we heard it at MSG this past season with Jaylen Brunson um you know it's starting to catch on and I it was loud in Chicago it's loud here like it's a thing now it's getting a let's keep making it a thing because Philly's not far guys you can go to Philly enchant that oh Toronto's not far you can go to Toronto there will be Mets fans in Philadelphia I am really excited for that series and also because the Mets proved they can play in San Diego with anybody in the National League that was one of the hotter teams in the second half and they went to Arizona who was even hotter than than San Diego took two or three from them this Mets team can play with anybody we know that I am excited for that Philly series and then we got some baseball head we got the Reds we got the Blue Jays then we got the series in Philly but man oh man that is going to be some good theater down the turnpike Shout Out New Jersey what's number one and if we I always Shout Out New Jersey when I have a chance to I know you do and if we want if we want these Beautiful Moments you know what it all comes down to a few things players providing and a player provided tonight the number one moment of Mets Red Sox Jesse Winker Grand Slam to just kick the game off um I mean like Jesse Winker is everything you want out of a trade deadline acquisition he's been great we said this last episode we'll say it again and there were people on Twitter on the like the first week who the Tyler nain tweet was just utter nonsense that's the kind of stuff you guys should be mad at not us saying that the Mets might have the best pitching rotation in the National League when we have the statistics and numbers to back it up and then the Mets backed up what we were saying it's the crap like the Tyler nain comps that you should really be throwing Rotten Tomatoes at we are getting it right no 100% and look at what he's done since then he gave us one the most insane moment of the year the the Jesse Winker walk-off like there's been a lot of crazy moments this year but like I said Jesse Winker stopping at first base throwing his helmet and screaming at the top of his lungs was I think the craziest y but this like Jesse Winker CR slam today was just insane and like the Mets the Mets never gave up that lead they did not they did not and once again it's the home run the starting pitching and now the relief pitching that has been the formula for the Mets having success the Mets have been out homering their opponents left and right the Red Sox is not Homer tonight and we used to never for a few years here we really weren't hitting many home runs outside of Pete no and Jesse Winker that that home run counter on the Outfield was looking pretty lame the last few years oh definitely it was 86 by the way when the Red Sox came to town now it's on 86 three homers on Tuesday and then winers Grand Slam how about the bucker moment tonight oh the ball getting through rip bill you know everyone leave him alone and then and then kir your enthusiasm does the The Buckner episode but no Jesse Winker has been an on-based machine he was that with the Nationals he comes here now he's starting to Homer hitting a little bit more power and uh you know I think also the did you see the moment with his daughter I did on online yeah I I literally watched it I was on the field watching it happen I was standing with I was standing with three or four people who were you standing with uh I was standing with Jess uh um Liz and then Carlos the security guard I think and literally this we watched it happen and all of us turn to each other at the same time went a and Jesse talked about his daughter R interviewed him when he first got here they did like this to each other like it was it was one of the most beautiful moments I've seen like caros mza said to us when we spoke to him a few days ago Jesse Winker it it's like he's been here since spring training and when you hear that that's all you got to know about the kind of guy he is and what he contributes to the team both both in the clubhouse and on the field and I was going to say the Mets have done a great job putting Jesse Winker in spots where he is going to have the most success and it's a deep team that's the thing I mean think about all the guys that the Mets have that can play in the Outfield you've got Tyrone Taylor who didn't play tonight yeah well he did play tonight Jeff mcneel Jeff mcneel you got Starley Marte right now you have DJ Stewart up here Harrison Bader you got Harrison Bader Brandon Nimbo P Pablo Reyes can play out there Jesse Winker the Mets are so balanced and we talked about this with Mendy the first time we went into his office the first time we interviewed him this season back when let us in there well it's we got lazy we don't want to break down set this so much easier in this room it's easier for him to come to our house but every man on the roster one to at that point 26 now 27 and 28 making an impact making a difference and the Mets having guys on the roster who are going to help and the guys who were not helping say what you want cruel harsh whatever I'm sorry they got rid of them they got rid of him they brought in guys who are versatile who you know give the Mets platoon advantages where they can get them and each and every guy you look at the entire go on mets.com roster look at the entire roster you can name a moment for every last guy on that team that's had a moment this season everybody's had a game everyone everybody there's been a Tyrone Taylor game there's been a Harrison Baer game there's been multiple for everybody even Pablo Ray scoring first base on Sunday exactly all right all right now this brings us to a perfect point because we were talking about Mendoza big topic of the episode you saw it in the title you saw it in the thumbnail you saw it on the headline the description is Carlos Mendoza a lock for manager of the Year yes he is veto I don't see any way you can tell me that Carlos Mendoza will not be voted the national league manager of the year and there are many reasons why Carlos Mendoza comes in here he changes the culture completely you have a team that's 11 games under 500 started 0 and five started 0 and five we don't even talk about that anymore we only talk about the 11 games under 5005 people were people were calling it a on arriv Ral season in the first five games of the year we remember game six against Detroit we remember being no hit and and the famous line is this rock bottom I remember going out in game two with a double header and like food stands were closed like people were so down on the year Carlos Mendoza and the impact and the imprint that he has made on the guys in that Clubhouse always pushing the right buttons whether it's managerial iname T the best example of it tonight's a good example but even what he told us about the plane from Arizona to Chicago when we asked him about did you have to talk to the guys about not taking your foot off the gas against the White Sox team that's probably going to break a record for the most losses ever and what he told us of you know yes and no I did go back there but they were already talking about it it's because Carlos Mendoza from day one in spring training has set the tone and this is a team we asked Lind we asked him hey Francisco Lindor said that he went to you for advice on getting more Barrel on Ball and he said oh I couldn't even tell you I talked to Francisco Lindor so much he has the tone and he created a ball club that has the Swagger and the personality and the resolve he lets his players be themselves which is a gigantic thing in baseball you do not often see teams go from 11 games under and look the day that they went 11 under it was not pretty you know what happened with the glove going over the netting and here they are after a seventh consecutive Victory on September 4th 12 games over 500 playing their best baseball but here there's examples and we'll talk about the one that we just witnessed and it was the managerial job he did with the bullpen using five different relievers going out there getting Tyler McGill before the lead had evaporated bringing in Alex Young knowing that the Red Sox had a lot of lefties stacked and all the moves that he made five moves on Wednesday and they all paid off scoreless Ball by the bullpen that's a manager that knows one win today is the most important thing exactly and he knows tomorrow's an off day yep so I can use these guys now oh Edwin Diaz told me he likes to pitch a lot all right let's get Edwin Diaz out to today he'll be fine on Friday um another thing he did he trusts his players and he knows his players we've talked to every pitcher we've spoken to this year we've talked about this the srino complete game shut out he goes out there he's ready to take sevie out we already see who's warming up ready to come out what's he do talks to sevie sevie says I'm not leaving I'm staying and Mendoza says all right then you better get these guys out and is that the only time he's done that no did it back in April Jose canana and you know what let's talk about Arizona David Peterson he lets David Peterson go out there get some more outs what's David Peterson do he goes out there and he gets more outs it's just been seemingly every time he has pushed a button it has worked out another example Francisco Lor being moved to number one in the lineup when Francis go londor came to New York he was expected to be the middle of the lineup bopper and you know what a lot of managers probably would have said I'm not making a change there there are some teams and there are some managers and some front offices that are loyal to a fault and they refuse to make changes to a fault even when it's overly obvious that A change is needed they fall into old traditions too old traditions he's not like that he said you know what I think I know what could jump start my star shortstop puts him a top the lineup back I think it was May 17th in Miami and Francisco Lindor has I think two and a half more F War than any other player in the National League since that date moving Brandon nmo to second in the lineup moving uh Mark Vientos to second in the lineup moving JD Martinez down a couple spots and not paid off J JD Martinez started homering again after he made those moves all these little tactical things that Carlos Mendoza has bucked Trends with and decided hey you know what this isn't working we got to figure out something else here the way that he's utilized Jose glacius yeah has been beautiful using him at second using him at third um finding ways to get him in the game he puts defensive Replacements in the game in the literally just to say you usually don't see that does it the second look when Carlos Mendoza gets a lead he trusts his Bullpen enough at this point that he puts in his best defensive he puts in his best guys on defense because he knows you know what look Jesse Winker got us some runs already tonight okay you know what I could put Tyrone Taylor Harrison Bader out there to really lock this game up okay tonight um we're in the eighth inning we really need to we need some speed on the base paths let's bring in Jose glacius from Mark ventos and then you know what Jose glacius will just stay in at third base because he's going to play a really tight third base and that's not saying Mark vantos doesn't it's just saying Carlos m is just so on top of everything and it's just like you know I think most managers get baseball's the hardest sport to to be a manager in or a coach or anything you know why because it's not Monday Morning Quarterback it's every day of the week it's every day it's every day of the week coach it's every day week talk in the media every single day you're every night twice a day dude you the Carlos Mendoza walks into this room we recording in there's a thin wall right here Carlos mza talks to the media every day before the game every day after the game um and he also has meetings with people in his office so like there's just so much to think about what goes on for a a a major league baseball manager Carlos Mendoza just every day just on top of it and you know what you can think about you listen to the I listen to the fan every day now it's because he got a car he drives now so that's I listen to the fans so much and you know what I rarely hear I rarely hear people calling in to just ream out Carlos Mendoza well there's no need to he was he was the and I'm not saying never that's a crazy thing to say but I'm saying it's not something you here very often he was the perfect person at the right time for this job a team that's got a lot of young players a team that has a lot of veteran players he learned under Aaron Boone he learned in the pressure cooker of the Bronx and look when you think about other guys that are going to be in that conversation Tori lllo Tori lell took a team to the World Series last year that's a very talented Diamondbacks team with a good rotation right now they've really suffered a lot of injuries Christian Walker just came back but still missing catel Marte still missing Gabriel Moreno um I think the expectations for the Diamondbacks were a lot higher than they were for the so I think that you got to give Carlos Mendoza some points there then you got Pat Murphy who inherited a team from from Craig Council that has been a perennial playoff team in recent years uh plays in a division that's a little bit weaker than the NL East for sure there's no Phillies there's no Braves in the centr GM sure Carlos Mendoza taking on a team that had the kind of 2023 season that it had last year where the season was over by before the end of June and it was a lot of out with these guys and we don't know what we got got coming in here and when we talk about 1 through 26 now 28 on the roster making an impact it's because yes there's a lot of talent here but also because of the decisions like how do we deploy Jesse Winker to best use him the best put him in positions how do we match up with their Lefty and then when they bring a righty in the game we're making a line change and we're ready to do so how do we get a Jeff mcneel back after the terrible slump that Jeff was in and he was wearing his emotions on his sleeve and some managers look we don't see what happens behind closed doors in Major League Baseball there's a lot of old school managers who might be fed up with a guy like Jeff mcneel who's a not contributing and B not hiding his emotions I don't know what happened in that Clubhouse all I know is Jeff McNeil has gotten out of it and he has been a big contributor in the second half and I have to imagine that Carlos Mendoza and the way he handled a very tough situation with a with a former Allstar the guy that signed for 5 years here and just nothing was going right all of a and Jeff mcneel has been a potent hitter in the second half there all of these reasons and so many more he's also done it with like there's a lot of guys that were in the minor leagues this year that last year you would have thought oh they might have gotten caught up they might have gotten their chances but there were some injuries that delayed these guys from coming back so he's not even doing this on like the full arsenal of like oh he had all this young talent coming up to help him no this was really like put together by David Sterns the front office and Carlos Mendoza like you said just pushing the right buttons so like you know you you people might want to argue you guys out there might want argue with us tell us we're being crazy like you can't keep saying I have a prediction I don't think that this one's going to get so much I don't think it's going to get as much as the last one but I think people like but you know what the thing is it's not Mets fans who are screaming at us you don't think so I think some are but I also think it's a lot of people fans of other teams that are like you guys are crazy thinking you have the best rotation in the National League because I saw a lot of people comment being like oh no no it's true yeah I mean it is true and look we're not hot taking here that's the thing like that pitching one I texted veto after uh the Sunday at white sock game and I was like dude the have the best starting pitching Ur in the National League since June 13th like this is a full-blown thing now we were talking a couple nights ago you know what we have we don't we have we have full heads of hair okay we're not two guys no hair on their head screaming out crazy ridiculous takes okay talking about batting average in only raing we're not two guys doing three hours in the middle of the day just complaining about everything and bashing the Mets for no reason I also got something to say a quality start six Innings three ear in runs right yeah that comes out to a 450 ra so if someone has a 410 ra or 412 ra don't say he's not good because it's actually not that bad anyway want to get that out of the way Carlos Mendoza I think at this point right now it is a very levelheaded take to say he will be a finalist for the manager of the Year Ward especially the way that voters perceive this you look at the expectation for the Mets coming into the season not very high when you look around the country and what people thought their predictions were going to be you look at the Mets start 0 and five 11 games under 500 00 flipping gloves over the over the fence you thought the season was over before Memorial Day the resurrection of the team all the things that surrounded it the you thought the team was over last week the UPS you thought the season was over last week the UPS the Downs all that he's told us I mean you could probably put together a mixtape of Carlos Mendoza saying hey the fact that Carlos Mendoza sat here with us after they got swept by Seattle the fact that he came back and he said you know what I'm going to do the interview I'm going to do my interview with uh veto and John I'm going to do meet at the Apple he came here he sat on this couch right after they got swept in a really terrible series another time when everybody said the season's over he sat with us and he spoke you know why because Carlos Mendoza has oral Carlos Mendoza has Riz Carlos Mendoza's oral level 9,000 and he also believes in what he says and he believes in the guys in his Clubhouse and they believe in him and he believes in us and that is why do you think he believes in us I think so that is why that is why we are seeing and have seen what is unfolding before our eyes and if there is any guy that I want managing this team under all the circumstances and all the ups and downs and what is to come in what will be a crazy last 22 games it is Carlos Mendoza when's the last time the Mets had a young manager in their first year where you went oh this is a guy that's going to be around here for a while because even Terry Terry was Terry always felt like a transitional man Terry was out of baseball for a while and he came back and I mean Terry did a great job also he he was a different stage of his life it wasn't like a young guy that you're like oh this is like is this franchise going to grow with the next 10 15 years exactly not not an Our Lifetime no I mean you know maybe Willie but you know I think Willie got kind of got a raw deal honestly he did but like that he's the only borderline answer to that question every manager gets for the most part every manager gets a raw deal L roas like you know like it's Lou got a Lou got a yeah yeah it's that it just happens but like this is a guy where like you're seeing from the first season just fighting adversity and really getting through it so look guys we got to get out of here because this is a night game um we are in here recording this podcast I don't even know how long we've went but there's a lot to talk about we didn't do the Mets math no I was going to I was going to set that up I was going to say before we get out of here I was going to say we're going to skip the voicemail this week because we just like I'm tired I need to edit this but I texted John last night and I said boy I hope they win tomorrow because that Mets math is going to be lit 22 games left for the Mets to get to 87 wins you need your phone for this I don't I got a text message I know the answer 11 and 11 gets him to 87 5 00 ball which we are not saying that is the goal to strive for no what I'm saying is if the Mets can play a little bit better than 500 ball the rest of the way they can get to 88 wins which that's a number I feel more comfortable with 87 still could get it done you don't know what kind of a slide the Braves could suddenly go into I believe the Padre's are losing right now against the Tigers this this is a wild year where in the beginning of the year everybody said 8384 gets you in right well that's what we saw last year and this is not that's not the same national race no this is going to be 87 88 the league cuz you know what the thing is the league has adjusted to the third wild card spot now and now everybody realizes oh this is something you can fight for well there also aren't teams that are winning 100 games this year this is going to be the first time 2014 we haven't seen a 100 game winner before before we get out of here I actually want to bring that so I was listening to the fan and I heard two people who don't have hair talking about how bad baseball is because there's not a 100 game winner and I thought I feel like it's the opposite I feel like baseball's good because there's not a 100 game winner that means there's more parody well that's what that's what that's the goal here of uh you know were spouting off about how baseball's in a terrible place there's no 100 game winner and I was like don't you not want to see one team win every single game the latest CBA was designed to not have runaway teams and you know everyone else kind of just had no chance so yeah I mean that's why we are seeing what we're seeing right now A Team like the Chicago Cubs you know luckily they got bopped down by the Pirates a little bit they did they did throw a combin no hitter on Wednesday but the Chicago Cubs got themselves back in with the San Francisco Giants you can make a case with a great week and kind of scratch and Claw their way back I mean this has been a crazy season the American League also is nuts the Cs don't lose well they they started to lose a bit but for for like 10 days they didn't lose yeah the American League Gees what's going they comb hit tonight they did um I just said that sorry it's okay it's fine this is this happened ony last night did it like they said something then Keith just repeated it after and was like sorry I wasn't listening anyway thank you guys for listening this was fun this has been fun seven straight and hey we got more fun coming your way do you remember how bad things were at this point where all we did was talk about food and stuff we haven't mentioned food we haven't mentioned anything I was thinking that this episode I was like we haven't mentioned anything except baseball yeah I Friday night though I will mention is going to be fun we got another DJ night DJ Yoshi coming out we got the black jerseys the Reds in town shaman on the bump you know when the black jerseys are On The Backs canana Saturday Sunday you got sevy I mean this is a weekend of pitchers baby and Paul Blackburn on the men had a strong star for triple ause we swep the white socks we swept the Red Sox can we keep it going can we sweep the Reds the Mets have it all ahead of them and we will be back to cover it all on Sunday but also make sure you check out that David Peterson interview
