officers around the state for their efforts in safety enforcement. The goal of the program is to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities out on the roads, and the Wheeling Police Department received several individual and department awards for their work. The Wheeling Police Department as a whole placed in the Top Speed Enforcement and Top Distracted Driving Enforcement awards. Corporal Gerald Mitchell took home 5th place for Top Speed Enforcement and 3rd place for Top Distracted Driving Enforcement in the individual officer awards. "If we want to reduce the fatalities out there as well as traffic accidents, then we as officers have to be willing to go out there and enforce the traffic laws, right? Even the ones people don't like, so much as the seatbelt enforcement. But, if we can go out there and enforce those laws and get people to slow down, get people to stay off their phones, then we can reduce the number of crashes that happen, and we reduce fatalities as well." Other categories awarded included seat belt enforcement, DUI enforcement, productive enforcement, eCitations, Target Red enforcement, and Drug Recognition Enforcement. The GHSP says that these awards honor the work being done to continue the downward trend in fatalities on West Virginia's nearly 39,000 miles of public roadways.
