l.com [Music] events back now with the LA report I'm Austin cross early voting for The 2024 elections is about a month away in California and La district attorney George gon's re-election bid against Challenger Nathan Hawkman is one of the most high-profile and closely wanted races alist Civics and democracy correspondent Frank stz has been doing deep reporting gasone and his policies as part of a new series for our podcast in perfect Paradise it launched today Frank joined me on Morning Edition to talk about his series we started off with why the focus is on gas gone well first of all you remember gasone was elected in 2020 on a platform of progressive reform it was the year George Floyd uh was murdered and the black lives matter protest swept Los Angeles and the rest of the country voters seemed ready for change on his very first day Austin gasone carried out his promise to make sweeping changes to the way prosecutors handle criminal cases no more charging juveniles as adults no more seeking the death penalty and perhaps most significantly no more seeking what are called sentencing enhancements what are those Frank well those are the laws that let prosecutors pile on many more years to someone's potential sentence for things like carrying a gun or committing a crime for the benefit of a gang gasone told me he's trying to combat mass incarceration which disproportionately affects black and Latino men what I wanted to do really is kind of go back to the ideal of our system right it wasn't so much about just creating a a a different system it's really going back to the core functions of what our criminal legal system is that it's about fairness in the process that we were not seeing and we still don't and as you know Austin throughout gon's time in office he's been under attack uh from his own prosecutors from law enforcement politicians he became a punching bag for right-wing media he was even called out by name at the Republican National Convention so in this podcast we explored the national debate over the criminal justice system through gasone who is part of a broader Progressive da movement and we try to present a three-dimensional picture of what gasone has done during his time in office well finally it's the last week to see Brothers size at the geffin playhouse in Westwood the play tells the story about the relationship between two brothers one of them just returned from prison it's the first show under new artistic director Terrell Alvin mccraine he also wrote the play mccraine says he thought starting with his own
