NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, both B.C. hockey alums, were tragically killed in New Jersey. Police say a drunk driver hit and killed the brothers while they were out riding their bikes. NBC 10's Jericho Tran joins us live from B.C. Boston College to share how the brothers are being remembered today. Jericho Well, Colton, it's been ten years since Johnny, affectionately known as Johnny Hockey, and his brother Matthew Gaudreau, played hockey right here at Boston College. Today was supposed to be his sister's wedding and now his family or their family, as well as the hockey community, are mourning the loss of these two talented players. Instead of gearing up for the season, the Boston College men's hockey team coach Greg Brown is preparing to break the devastating news that two of the Eagles former star players are gone. Tell those guys how special those players were and the mark they left on BC and you can't take anything for granted. Police say both Johnny and his brother Matthew were riding bikes in Oldmans Township, new Jersey, on Thursday night when a drunk driver hit the brothers. Both died the night before their sister's wedding, and they were all back to celebrate. And now you lose two sons. So it's almost unimaginable. Johnny played for the Boston College Eagles from 2011 to 2014, winning the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 2014, even finishing his degree at Boston College after joining the NHL. The mother was with us and she was adamant, Johnny, you're going to get that degree. His brother Matthew also played for the team from 2013 to 2017. Both brothers played together for the 2013 2014 season. They were really just really fun to be around, like a great teammates. A seven time participant in the National Hockey League all Star game, Johnny played for the Calgary Flames before the 31 year old signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The National Hockey League saying we grieve alongside his teammates, members of the Blue Jackets and Flames organizations and his many friends in hockey and countless fans around the world for whom he created indelible memories on and off the ice. He handled fame extremely well, and he did it in the NHL level to where he was always a great teammate. Matthew played for the ECHL for about five years before the 29 year old started serving as the head coach of Gloucester Catholic High School's hockey team. People are kind of shocked at the moment. Definitely some very shocking news. Now Johnny leaves behind two children and his wife. Matthew also leaves behind a wife. As for the driver, Sean Higgins, he's facing two counts of death by a vehicle. He's currently being held at the Salem County Correctional Facility
