[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] welcome back Mighty Vandal the tubs of the club your University of Idaho affiliate on the Big Sky podcast Network I'm your host Brian Maro joined today by fellow co-hosts with with a a viewers can see uh you'll notice not only is uh trevan willing to rock a Jaguar's hat in public but accessorizing and those accessories match Trev Pixley in Lewiston is how's it going yeah I don't know which one I'm uh more embarrassed to say is I uh I popped my shoulder out today bending over to pick up glass cleaner or that I wear a Jacksonville Jaguars hat in public uh both of those very embarrassing but uh we got a job to do we got to talk about the vandals and a another potential FBS win on the horizon ladies and gentlemen and from the Shadows or the brick again if you're a viewer you can see I don't know why Martin picked a brick wall as his background but he did so I'm lazy about cleaning where my computer is so I don't want anybody else to see it I see I see well Martin how's it going it's going well it's another week it's another week of the show I'm excited and I just noticed Brian's duster is not in the background breaking news yeah I was going to I'll fix that when one of you guys gets to talk it's it's here it's here and um that that's something we can't mess with there's you know you want to say it's a aesthetic you want to say it's um a good luck charm of sorts I'll take either but hey we're here we have uh look we got a talk week two Vandal football uh by the way sub the club brought To Us by Snake River Stampede Canadian whiskey uh you'll hear hear more about that later on but hey before before we shift talking uh Wyoming I I got to spend a second going over the week that was I missed being on the reaction show and hey I I'll keep it brief because mostly uh Trevon and Dallas and Martin to did a pretty I thought pretty good pretty fun job of going through uh one of the more dramatic Idaho games honestly and well iOS had a lot of close good games the last couple years this is different you know at number three Oregon in hanging tough it's a it's a three-point game in the you know halfway through the fourth quarter just absolutely incredible but my basic takeaways are hey want a piggyback um Idaho defensively was exceptional uh there's some obviously going to be some things to improve but that's the best look Oregon's going to be the best offense and best defense Idaho plays the entire year and defensively look I Idaho with three sacks of Oregon kesan James Newbie two and a half tackles for loss uh no no was a lights out effort from the defense incredible also considering the defense was on the field for about twice as many plays as the offense that was incredible defensive inte intensity for all four quarters it's pretty normal in these power five games and I say normal not just FCS FBS but Idaho in the power five games they've lost last couple years they hang tough two or three quarters and then fade towards the end no that didn't happen Idaho played better in the second half than they did in the first half and that was just in Elite looking defensive effort if that's if Idaho can sustain defensive intensity and execution like that this year their defense is going to win a lot of games for for the vandals so that absolutely incredible offensively had I been on the show I would have push back a little bit on on Trevon um largely look here here's where Trevon got right Idaho had one sustained one truly sustained sustained Drive the entire game you Trev you're 100% right on on that part um 100% the offens is offensively Idaho is not yet where they are defensively um the thing that I would say is look this is easily the best defense Idaho is gonna play the entire season and it's there's a ton of new guys that Idaho has has that need to figure out their rules um good teams can take a few weeks to figure this out Montana looked like garbage offensively last season took him about a month to figure out what they wanted to do and then they were fine um by the way Montana also their offense last season evenig when they figured things out they were not Elite nationally if you have an elite defense you don't need to have an elite offense but I I think the takeaway offensively should be a little more cautious of we know the offensive line is a question mark we now know with Jack Lane gone quarterback's a big question mark But I just say the Oregon game is not the game that I would use as my evidence to say hey I don't think this offense is going to be very good this year because they're GNA every single week they're going to play an easier matchup but as Ron lowney says in the comment section the o line needs to step it up you're which 100% right so now we got to talk Wyoming because we had a full episode you guys can listen to rest rest of the episode uh to talk about the Oregon and Idaho game like Jason X said to paraphrase they don't hand out trophies for losing to Oregon by 10 we got new games to talk about so the Wyoming Cowboys in laremy Wyoming Idaho travels to War Memorial Stadium to H to take on Wyoming Mountain West Wyoming preseason number six pick in the Mountain West Trevon we have a few things to roll through talking Wyoming but hey let's pretend we're doing Wyoming football 101 where are you starting at starting with Wyoming uh you know they got a new head coach I think that's probably the most important thing to start off with um the thing with tree is he is not known for his great uh pronunciation uh J swavl how do you say it right I'm just gonna go with sa I'll go s sa so that's that's how we're going to go with it um and they played Arizona State last week and did not look very good uh looked kind of like a different Wyoming team for the last couple years Brian in my opinion um what did you take away from that yeah so well here here's the big shift for Wyoming this season Jay saell is he's head coach his this is sell's first head coaching gig in his career his path to Wyoming not going to go through every single position coaching stop but some relevant things for for us to pay attention to um back in 2017 2018 he's the defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach at Wake Forest under Dave Clawson Dave clawson's the current Wake Forest coach he was defensive coordinator for a year in four games um saell is was fired at Wake Forest in 2018 after four games he sits out a couple he doesn't coach at least his his his bio both on his the Wyoming website and the internets that I found doesn't have him coaching anywhere for a couple years he resurfaces as a defensive coordinator at Wyoming under coach Craig bull Craig bull uh came to Wyoming from North Dakota State and kind of resurrected the Wy Wyoming program in relatively the same image of North Dakota state of Defense power football that's what Wyoming was so saell has been at Wyoming as a defensive coordinator for since well start in 2020 so Four Seasons as the defensive coordinator Wyoming before moving up to becoming the head coach this season he also was coaching safeties under Craig bull couple couple years recently to look at that I think are worth paying attention to in in 2022 um North Wyoming goes seven- six overall so hey you're relatively Solid 5 and three in the Mountain West a common opponent in 2022 for Wyoming and Idaho Northern Colorado Wyoming beats Northern Colorado 33-10 relatively similar split to when Idaho beat Northern Colorado in 2022 then last season Wyoming goes nine and4 overall including a bullwin five and3 in the Mountain West common opponent Wyoming beats top five Portland State 31 to 17 in larmy they also beat another common Idaho opponent Nevada 40 2-6 uh so hey blew out Nevada just like idah Hood did in 2023 but some things to pay attention to in 2023 this is the number two scoring defense in the Mountain West allowing 22.3 points per game and the number three rushing offense at 144 a half yards a game four yards per carry now heading into this season with Saville's head coach the small sample size we have is hey no no real shock not much change defensively they're still running the four3 still Rel ly you know base packages according to Jason NE kind of like Montana State in what they'll do on first and second down defensively they kind of hold off on more creative Blitz Blitz packages until third down offensively is where this team's looking different Craig Bull power football very sophisticated power football but Power football was Craig Bull's DNA uh this year Wyoming is running a pro style West Coast offense clearly putting an in intentional effort into throwing the ball a little bit which is well so far we only have one game the results are not great the quarterback situation for Wyoming is not one of a ton of experience the two guys who saw action in the 487 loss at Arizona State uh starter Evan I'm gonna butcher the last name saoba goes six of 15 for 42 yards through two awful back-to-back intersections interceptions uh Kaden Anderson freshman came in in relief went four or five for 36 yards in a touchdown according to the dep depth chart released this week soda or savda however you say that he's still listed as starter saaba is a junior he's been at Wyoming his entire career he played at snow sorry to kind catch out there Brian he played at Snow College for a year in 2021 okay I'm a liar second year I'm a liar he's been this is his second year at Wyoming thank you uh thank you producer s producer that Martin in he saoba has thrown 53 passes in two years at Wyoming for no touchdowns and three picks so there's not a ton of QB experience under Center on it for a team that wants to spread the that wants to throw the ball a little bit more than they did in the past I wouldn't look at the pass rush split of a 48 to7 loss as necessarily indicative of what the team is going to do against Idaho but keep in mind even though the team tried to pass a little bit more they still rushed at 32 times compared to uh 20 pass attempts though six of those were saoba rushes which would some of the at least five of those would have been sacks so a little bit closer to a 5050 split that's the basic background we have some injury stuff we will need to get to in a second but um hey with that as our initial as our launching Point Trevon what are you paying attention to uh out of this Wyoming Cowboy football team yeah you know offensively uh like you said you know spent a good good chunk of time there discussing it I'm not blown away by really anything Wyoming does offensively um just from the little spurts that I was able to watch prior to hopping on here from their game against Arizona State um their quarterback is built very similar to me as Colton Richardson maybe I'm crazy but he gives me Colton Richardson Vibes I don't know maybe am I crazy am I crazy about that I trust your judgment okay I don't know I went to high school with him so I don't know I I always like to I always like to say that but I think he's kind of built like him in a way but you know I don't know I'm not blown away by anything that he they do offensively I think defensively they're a little bit more sound on that side of the ball and uh with how this Idaho offense is a little bit more you know a little more injured without Jack Lane the way they played against Oregon again you can't really take what that offense did against Oregon as the true judgment call of what this Idaho offense is going to be but you know could potentially struggle against that defense but I I'm I'm thinking Wyoming's calling card is going to be uh the defense more than the offense in my opinion uh yeah look and there there's some kind of there's some key injuries that uh that we gota got to address with with Wyoming I mean um the the big one and hey this is this is from uh this is from Co coach saell uh reported in the Wyoming Morning News uh starting left tackle Nathan guer is going is for sure going to be out and uh defensive end Devon Harris is for sure G to be out uh strong safety Isaac White He's listed in the depth chart but had a head injury against Arizona State he's thought of as questionable tight end Michael John Michael Gillan ber well I guarantee I butchered that is uh He's listed in the depth chart this week but he may be out also running back uh dwan M McNeely is is listed as questionable he was in the depth he was listed on the depth chart for this week two uh we got in the C look at I mean that's another big thing to bring up is there Wyoming's potentially down their top two running backs as well so look there for sure like this is from Jason e talking on cter noan as his show Big Sky breakdown Wyoming looked bad against Arizona State uh but the Cowboys went seven and0 last season at home they're historically a pretty good home team stadiums at elevation they're a it's a Rel it can be a relatively tough place to play they've got strong fan support we're still early um in you know coach Saville's background so there's I don't think there's reason to think they've lost energy or momentum at this Point based off the one blowout loss that they're hey they're supposed to lose but I got to say um you know if if Martin if you can post any lines for this game would love would love that but uh the line news has been kind of all over the place for this game which I don't care about the betting angle there wasn't really a whole lot the one that I found was from 2019 games so that's that's not helpful yeah it's not helpful um there's not really a real sports book one that I can find just for you degenerates that like to gamble on these games but look I got to say look there's a lot of returning Talent from last season for Wyoming but the the team only the team only picked up seven transfers you know in the portal era but offensively they essentially have the guy of the guys who are gonna suit up against Idaho they actually have a ton of new faces just like Idaho has a ton of new faces and guys who need to get their roles ironed out which is to say from the Idaho end I I got to say there's some key matchups we'll talk about in a second but look the mountain West has been pretty good at dropping games to Big Sky teams the last few years I mean it's already happened once New Mexico should have lost by 20 to Montana State they lost Idaho picked up a win of course last season at Nevada Sacramento State beat beat Colorado State the year before I got this game circled as man that I look this is huge for Idaho if Idaho can pick up an FBS win that obviously matters um and these these games matter a ton for playoff position think about Idaho getting that byy last year think about saak State even making the playoffs in the first place but let's um look look the kind of the book we know on Wyoming so far is very kind of tabula Rossa offense not a ton of returners and they're trying to do something different that's a favorable thing for on the Idaho end but this is a team that has a lot a lot of returning Talent on the defensive side of the ball and though they have injuries Wyoming's been pretty good defensively the last few years there's no reason to think with savell moving to head coach that continuity is going to change in any way so before we get to the Idaho end of this Martin we got to talk about whatever ad you can come up with first with no notice you are welcome we're gonna talk about Hughes River expedition look they've been supporting Hughes River has been supporting this show for a long time and if you're looking for a great all-inclusive weeklong vacation don't look past your backyard Hughes River Expeditions has been call them now 406 5 44450 or check them out at Hughes river.com for the Idaho end Trevon look if if you've been living under Rock and You Don't Know Jack Lane broke his left collar bone had surgery for it right after the game against Oregon and Trevon get that M thank you got that microphone unmuted that means Jack Wagner red shirt freshman is gonna be T he's gonna be the starting quarterback the first scholarship quarterback Jason neck ever signed in Moscow as one of his recruits Rich duut call is the first scholarship quarterback he had come in as freshman but Dutch calls and Bryant Jack Wagner is the first one they recruited what do we know about Jack Wagner look I I've I've had minimal eyes on Jack Wagner he's been a a guy with the uh the scout team a lot from my era of covering the Vandal I say my era like it was so long ago but you know like when I was covering the Vandals um he's not going to I don't know I he's not going to blow you away with his arm Talent at least not right now he doesn't have a super strong arm um he is a mover he can move um I I think he's a little bit quicker than Jack Lane is um he has uh I don't know I think he's he's a guy that uh it's going to be a real welcome to college football experience when he plays Wyoming I'm going to be interested to see how uh he reads the defense in his first college football uh experience because a lot of the times when I peaked over at Jack Wagner during practice he was throwing interceptions if I'm being honest with you so I'm I'm G to be very intrigued to see how he has developed as a thrower here yeah so the book on Jack Wagner I'm gonna lean on some observations from Patty and also from Jason e himself is Wagner does have an arm as a strongest arm on the team probably has a stronger arm than javanni McCoy by a bit but accuracy and pocket presence are why the a strong arm like his was not look there was no quarterback controversy in Moscow heading into start of the Season there was it was completely known essentially since the end of last season that Jack Lane was going to be the starter that's not an accident that because Lane has that part down that's where Wagner needs to develop uh Wagner can't Wagner can run he's he's going to be certainly a more effective rusher than than Jack Lane would have been and my understanding is in spite of being 64 1990 which that's not like the thickest frame he is a little bit more of a power rusher relative to that size than like Javan McCoy would have been and in the little bits of Jack Wagner we've seen like we've seen him as a running quarterback so I not exclusively I mean we're not talking like you know Zack borish level of running the ball and not passing the ball but there look I'd expect we know for a fact the game plan Idaho is gonna have against Wyoming is now different because Jack Lane had his own had certain strengths and the coaching staff knows that you have a you have a quarter a red shirt freshman making his first start in an important game we know this this game plan is going to be simplified we know they're going to want to run more than they pass that's what Idaho around close to what Idaho wants to do in the first place anyway but we know that's probably going to be exacerbated with a red shirt freshman quarterback like Jack Wagner taken over and are going to tr do their best to give him a lot of third and shorts so that so we're not looking at completing High degree of difficulty place but I do expect that we're going to see more I think we're going to see more quarterback rushes than we would have seen with Jack Lane honestly uh gavan did run some but there weren't a gigantic amount of like designed runs called for javanni I'd expect we're going to see a few designed runs for Jack Lane the big reason mean the big reason for this is it means you get an extra blocker and I I think that's going to matter for Idaho who's you know we expected we're going to see a little bit more 12 personnel and this this might 12 Personnel or doing the plus and doing the plus one running game that par why Montana States run the quart quarterbacks so often is because gives you an extra blocker and for a team like Idaho maybe that matters a little bit more than it would have otherwise so Trevon look we talked about Jack we talked about Jack Wagner And how that may impact what we're gonna see this week what matchups position groups are you looking at for this you know as being as being material really meaningful in this game I I think the most obvious like important position battle that Idaho needs to win is at the line of scrimmage um the offensive line needs to protect Jack Wagner first and foremost whether he's passing the ball or you know opening him up some running lanes and they also need to open up some holes for Eli Cummings Nate Thomas or you know even if they want to throw in a third running back in there um you know with the Jack Lane down to even try to run the ball even more you know they need to open up running lanes for these running backs and I think you know against Oregon granted that's the number three team in the country I get that you guys grilled me enough for that I understand it but it's still the fact of the matter is that there was not a lot of running Lanes against Oregon you know they didn't have a whole lot of places to go to run the football and if that becomes a Trend and it's going to be hard for Idaho to run the ball this season and they need to have these long possessions Jason X calling card on offense for a long time well since he came to Idaho has been just grinding out these possessions having super super long long drives and they need to get back to that and I think they can do that against Wyoming if they grind out the tough yards and how they do that is they have to win at the line of scrimmage and they need to get Eli Cummings the ball either as a runner or as a catcher they ran a lot of you know screens in that game or you know just quick passes to the flats to Eli um you got to make sure there's some blockers out there you know blocking is g to be imperative I think that's where Idaho lacked a lot against Oregon is finding a body and getting on a body and that's going to be important and I think that's the most crucial thing uh for the vandals this week the receivers need to get open as well well um not a whole lot of times a receiver got open last week and you said man look how open he is again I get it number three team in the country whatever I understand but do it against Wyoming get open let's see it those are those are my important match ups BR yeah so we I'll I'll hit on a couple of those but the thing that I I think this game is probably going to be lower scoring both teams are relative strength are on the defensive side of the ball Idaho looked just fine uh with defensive intensity against Oregon but like hey Tom Kendall was saying in the comments section can't do 88 snaps on D no you're right like that now hey credit to Idaho their depth let them do that so that's that's part of why we have you're hearing the confidence you you hear out of us on the defensive side of the football but Idaho's relative strength is defense and offense right now it's relatively unknown who's going to step up and how much Wyoming's in the exact same boat strength defense that it's hard to but it's hard to tell who who is going to be able to do what for Wyoming on that side of the ball so one question is can Idaho Force some turnovers uh the Wyoming quarterbacks are uniformly inexperienced and Zada looked through a couple absolutely terrible picks against Arizona State Idaho being able to force some turnovers is one of the things that could help this this team that hey offensively again I'm not as I'm not as down offensively on Idaho as Trevon is but it's 100% fair to say that hey there's no reason yet to say that Idaho this this Idaho team's gonna win games because they're outscoring teams and in a sort of boat race style like we we have seen for parts of the last two seasons this team looks like it's honestly its identity is going to be a little bit more more like University of Montana in that look we we saw Idaho get to the quarterback against Oregon pretty much is good as we've seen them get the quarterback against any team in the last couple years which is incredible to say and you hope that poent if they can do that against Oregon you hope that means that that looks even better against a team like Wyoming another defensive just a defensive facet I want to key on Oregon's a big play they're offensively they're good at breaking big plays Idaho held Oregon to three plays in excess of 20 yards and zero plays in excess of 25 yards and that's Oregon Wyoming is the opposite I am in no way worried about Idaho not being able to engage in some you know what a chess master would call prophylaxis here against Wyoming of giving them nowhere nowhere to go if they can keep up that intensity the entire game against Wyoming when Wyoming is not number three in the nation hey that that's kind of the the question defensively but the I think again against Wyoming against Oregon the defensive questions we didn't have 100% down like hey how are the quarterbacks going to look they they were they were fine they were fine Andrew Marshall looks really good I'm kind of happy Abraham Williams ended up winning that starting job because that means we got a lot of depth there that I feel good about we know guys like Tommy McCormick uh are G we already know they're fine we know that know that defensive line is Stout we know and they're looking faster to me than we've seen Idaho in any years but the young linebacker showed up just fine so hey defensively there's a lot of reasons to think that Idaho could put Wyoming in position to be to force turnovers to get more three and outs which they need the downside is Wyoming probably feels relatively similar about what they can make Idaho do so I want to see I I think what we're gonna see is one a focus on running football but also with Jack Wagner I'd expect we have a little bit more javani McCoy style treatment of simplified Playbook um a lot of read option A lot of look for option one look for option two run uh if if that's the type of passing you has to cycle through because the one thing that Idaho needs to absolutely can't afford to do is can't afford to get behind turnover wise against another strong defensive team um so with that with all that said Trevon we're almost at score prediction times but uh first Martin we we gotta let people know about Snake River Stampede Canadian whiskey show sponsor look they they have two whisky options you can't go wrong with either either the entry level Snake River Stampede or you want to celebrate a bigger not I'm not that Diet Coke [ __ ] you want to celebrate something you you want to celebrate a Wy oh Idaho win over Wyoming class up with snake Rivers River 1915 small batch Edition both add double barrel finishes both are three grain whiskies 80% corn 10% ride 10% Mart molted barley you can't go wrong either way grab a Snake River today so we're about to get score predictions Trevon before we get there any other game facets you want to key on no I'm uh I do want to say I'm very very confident in Idaho's defense I think defensively Idaho is as solid as they've ever been I you know since I've covered this team I think the defensive line is good they are deep I think in the secondary is good I think the linebackers that's a group that you know I have always been high on I thought that that young core was going to rise to the occasion and boy did they I mean Jackson e Zack Johnson I believe was even in a handful of plays The Quarter Lane kid I mean I'm very excited to see where this defense can go um very very skeptical about the offense but we'll see how that uh that translates come uh come Saturday and the rest Seas okay Martin get yourself in here it is time for score predictions I'm gonna go Idaho 18 Wyoming 15 that's a good guess okay uh Trevon what are you going with that was pretty good I'm gonna go Idaho 13 Wyoming 10 Idaho 13 Wyoming 10 you know just one thing before the game starts guys I'm not going to read the Idaho to deep which is the tubs full disclosure has in other years had a rich tradition of that uh get familiar with the two deep on the dline because Idaho goes about look Idaho played 11 D linemen against Oregon there's about there's around eight eight to nine D linemen who I think could pretty much start at almost any school in the Big Sky I mean like look we talk about guys like Malachi like Malachi Williams we talk about guys like keesan James Newbie but hey Zack crer had some huge plays we all know about Dallas off lava I know even I think it's Matias mlan out of Priest River even played some snaps against Oregon as well yep yeah there's some there's some depth on the D line get familiar with that depth because that's one of the things that I think this Idaho team is gonna try to really one of the things that we saw look Idaho played hard defensively before with under Rob oric so like hey no shade coming that way everyone's happy with how ore was in this two years u in our small sample size Dan Jackson has been able to bring an extra level of intensity that makes me honestly in a good way think of Montana football get get think of that for this Idaho team especially when we got a Young quarterback playing I look I'm with I I'm with you guys on Idaho I think I think Wyoming has so many offensive questions that the fact that Idaho we're not sure what we're going to get out of the quarterback well look Idaho didn't actually get that much out of Jack Lane against Oregon not a put down like they shouldn't have got much against Jack Lane out against Oregon if Idaho wins that game they're gonna win that game 17 to 14 or 21 to 17 anyway but they were competitive not getting that much out of the quarterback I I think we're probably gonna see more offensively against Wyoming than we saw against Oregon because that's not a high bar to hit I'm gonna say Idaho 20 Oregon 14 so that's your predic that's your predictions tubs predicting a clean sweep Dallas I'll see if I can get a game score out of Dallas uh which we'll hit on later because we gotta we're gonna pick the Big Sky before we pick the Big Sky though I do want to say one thing about patreon.com chubs thee Club this is different obviously join uh the Discord explodes during football season it can cost you as little as a cup of coffee it can cost you more than a cup of coffee we're okay with that but hey special thing we're doing for some patrons I say some emphasis on some uh we got a special gift that I actually have to explain a teeny bit for it to make sense so a ton of whiskies listeners know and love are what we call sourced whiskies so Snake River Stampede is a sourc whiskey which it say it's Canadian whiskey so the whiskey itself is aged in Canada Snake River Imports it they do their own aging and blending completely normal for a lot of whiskey companies to Source whiskey and blend it on their own well tubs of the club has their own special blend that certain patrons are going to get we got about seven bottles that it's I essentially asked to do a random drawing between the top uh like you know our n our 19 plus dollar month patrons or people who are doing who do something extra like hey the Mayors are in this drawing because they feed all of us all the entire damn year so the speaking of Mayors they are hosting a game they're hosting a function in Wyoming yeah so by the way uh Dallas picks Idaho 4 21 the blended whiskey I made uh which I spent some time this summer figuring out it's sourced so no I didn't I didn't distill this I'm not going to kill any one um it's a it's a mix of two of three things one Canadian whiskey has this really speal has this this one thing unique about Canadian whiskey you can have up to one 11th of the contents of Canadian whiskey be something other than Canadian whiskey and still call it Canadian whiskey so what I did is say I sourced some Alberta PR premium 100% Rye 80 proof whiskey sour some Alberta Rye Cask strength that's about 126 proof whiskey Blended those two together to get stronger flavors um out of the out of the Rye itself and so we have different flavors showing up and then not just under 9% is Port mixed in there it's tubs the club blend I don't have a name for it but hey so we're going to do a drawing certain patrons are going to get it uh other top patrons we we still have shirts you got to order but that's going to be coming out I'm going to do my best to deliver that during the first game so Tom Kendall saying is is Brian in nursing school or Bartending School uh nursing school I just dude I'm a whiskey nerd so that's what that's where that came from but hey we want to do something special that you couldn't get anywhere else and I gotta tell you the Canadian that so that Canadian blend that Tes the club blend the only whiskey that I think might Canadian whiskey can get in Idaho state liquor store that might be better is is Snake River that's it like I'm not I'm not kidding I'm pretty happy with what we came up with so from there that that means say if you're a top Patron then you you're in the drawing for it if you're not whatever and side note I'm not mailing the [ __ ] out so if you if you're a top Patron and I can't actually get you the game I'm sorry just that's just how it's gon to work Martin we got to pick the Big Sky so last week Trevon Trevon goes 11 and0 right Martin who 11 games 12 12 and0 12 and0 my bad my bad because I was a dummy and thought we all picked Idaho and they thought they won okay so Trevon goes 12 and0 Dallas and I go 11- one Martin goes 10- two always an asterisk there because Martin will never pick Montana so that kind of deflates his score so subbs the club did not too bad picking the Big Sky this week we're gonna run through so hey um Martin I'm always gonna throw to you first for your reaction for your game and then your game pick so it'll go Martin Trevon me game one Texas A&M Commerce at UC Davis Davis wins this one easily Davis wins this one 63-13 yeah Texas A&M Commerce is the time type of team I wish Idaho uh could get as an FCS you know kind of body bag game uh but UC Davis uh looked good for a half against Cal onward down miles Hastings looked great early and pretty bad in the second half L larrison's healthy but hey this is UC Davis has a new coach so there's always a chance we got new a new team DNA Tim plow has been around the Big Sky for a long time well respected as an offensive coordinator first time un running the show himself in the comments section James everyone's picking Davis because they everyone knows and everyone's picking a blowout but Patty freak saying Commerce could be okay this year in the SOS in the south conference but not good yeah well the South Conference is not good at all so okay hey we're we're all picking UC Davis we already got this one moving on there there's virtually no Intrigue in Texas A&M Commerce right now Sacramento State at Fresno State Fresno but it's close Fresno and it's it's kind of close I I'll say 38 to 177 yeah so man Fresno State is historically the pretty pretty solid Mountain West team of course uh however we don't know that much about them they lost 30 to1 to number nine Michigan in week one do know Logan 5 potential starter from Montana is a is a Fresno transfer which tells us nothing so like here's the thing Sacramento State looked like they should have beat San Jose State but uh five turnovers K killed them in that game in addition as Patty fck saying sack dominates on the ground for three quarters and they choke it in the end that's pretty much what happened in the San Jose State game um I'm gonna pick Fresno State here I am looking at continuing to see what that quarterback situation looks like for Sacramento State Kan Ben the starter did not look very good against San Jose State Carson Conlin in a small sample size did also not he also did not like the world on fire either it it's just they bring different things Kane Bennett can run but he's gonna throw some some pretty rough passes Carson conin is a traditional pocket passer but he doesn't have a ton of experience so I think we're all picking Fresno State NAU at Arizona Arizona Arizona by a score of 48 to 10 okay so the brain thing is to is to pick Arizona because you should our only sample size of NAU is beating linkoln 66 to6 which means absolutely nothing but if for some reason you are saying hey I really want to watch this NAU game what you should be looking at is a new head coach uh we have a malfunctioning there there na website malfunctioning the team was all over the place is what they did quarterback wise against Lincoln because they didn't really need to to do much but they rushed it 35 times passed the ball 17 times that's a pretty pretty heavy ratio in One Direction it was a blowout but the general direction of the big sky has been the better teams like they still pass enough but Power football has been kind of dominating the Big Sky Conference in the Missouri Valley Football Conference so seeing if NAU has any sort of can show any sort of that type of strength against Arizona but I'm picking Arizona this shouldn't be that close uh top our first Big Sky Conference Game of the Year top five Portland State at Weber State uh in an upset Weber State wins yeah I I got Weaver State as well uh 247 yeah I I'm going with Weber State now Weber State did not exact as detailed on the uh Big Sky podcast Network Power Ranking show on Monday night hosted by me Patty fakes joined us Weber didn't like the world on fire against Washington but uh hey Richie Munoz was good at starting quarterback for half of last season uh Deon bankson running back he's he looked healthy against ubb rush for over 100 100 yards if he's healthy he's one of the best running backs in the league and defensively Weber States front seven we talked about Idaho given teams problem Weber States front seven is going to give teams problem two names to pay attention to for Weber State Braden Wilson and Kamari Bailey IID know vandals know Kamari Bailey is on on the dline so I'm picking Weber State and I think this is gonna be a Get Right game I think this is um we're gonna know more about who Weber State is after this game I believe as far as like what that actual development is from for in year two of Mickey mentel Maine verse Montana State in Boseman Montana state by a mile Montana state by two miles I'll go 55 to 70 yeah the the Bobcats played two games they two and0 they've rushed for about SE a little over 700 yards in two games and it it just that's even with offensive lineman out um that's you can call that good uh Tommy mot has only rushed it 15 times on the year in two games which for him is not very much uh three of those rushes are for touchdowns as well so that means he only he's only hit the ground at Max 12 times from Russian that and that in college we count sacks as russes I'm picking Montana State the Bobcats have looked really good uh these first couple weeks that's a team to watch for throughout throughout the rest of the season Northern Colorado at Colorado State throwing me off here Brian uh Colorado State oh God yeah my bad got Colorado State uh 353 man Northern Colorado is doing their best to make they're doing their best to make me look bad and I I'm kind of taking it personally the Bears average 14 points a game last season fired their offensive coordinator the right call but then in week one against Incarnate Word a good FCS team but still an FCS team team Northern Colorado scores seven total points team gains they gain 360 yards not awful but put up seven total points turn the ball over four times um I don't expect that's GNA get better against Colorado State uh starting quarterback Peter castelli for Northern Colorado through he counted for two of those turnovers with two picks but this team they do have some talents on the ground David afari and Van Shield are also are two rushers who could matter once Big Sky play starts keep keep in mind on those names but full disclosure the this is a pretty easy one to me I'm but van Shield a transfer from Colorado State who carried 90 times in 2023 so actually interesting to see that happen but yeah Northern Colorado is going to lose for sure Colorado State the game I missed Drake the Drake Bulldogs tra famous for being the first team we saw Jack Lane play against travel to Chi take on the Eastern Washington Eagles Eagles sitting at one and0 right now all right Martin Drake I'm not gonna make the I why uh Eastern by a Eastern's gonna boat race Drake they're not it's not going to be close I'm also going to go with Eastern Washington but I will say Drake for some reason gets the most autogenerated rookies in Madden for some reason like I don't I will never understand that ever like it's like a premier power five best college ever but yeah Eastern Washington Granda Brian has no idea what you're talking about Eastern Washington looked great for them offensively they look great against mon myth kakoa V sparis 26 29 for 282 yards and five touchdowns on the ground Eastern rushes 54 times for 265 yards so pretty good split against Monmouth now m mon myth isn't the best team in the FCS but you know what they're better than Drake so I'd look for another blowout Eastern Washington win uh Eastern they're gonna have some momentum man they feasibly Eastern has se South East Louisiana in two weeks and then Nevada after that there's a world where Eastern's four and0 at the end of out of conference play and I say that because man would I kill for that schedule but yeah you gotta pick Eastern Washington um we will have no idea if Easter's made any progress defensively after this game but we know they they look no one had questions about them offensively but damn they looked good in week one oh God Cal pully at Stanford Stanford C no I'm just kidding Stanford as well [Music] 6327 you know calply what they do is make me sad um me too no like because you hey when Baldwin Bill Baldwin took over a few years ago I was happy that he took over I was like hey if calply could be interesting that's actually a that's a wrinkle I'm I'm okay I'm absolutely okay living with is in the in the Big Sky but Baldwin never really got the thing rolling in any sort of meaningful way and Paul wolf has not been able to to do it to do the same thing either and I guess here's the here's the part that makes me sad for calply so obviously I'm picking Stanford Jaden Jones started as a true freshman a couple years ago at calalo yeah they were they were awful at the time he was a guy who but he could throw pretty well and he could run he blew out his knee and he clearly he hasn't recovered because he's like the number three quarterback and that's a pro if you're number three in calp that's a problem just means you're not going to see the field Bo Kelly was terrible against San Diego San Diego a not a very bad relative to Big Sky Team non-scholarship School Bo Kelly one touchdown three picks the team rushed for eight yards on 18 carries against the vaunted San Diego Terrero defense and if look if you can't hang with San Diego you can't hang with anyone in the Big Sky so no calp is gonna get killed by Stanford it's I've made a commitment to try to not be flipping about Big Sky teams this year and calply is really gonna test me on that so yeah I'm going with Stanford Montana at North Dakota Martin let go those fighting Hawks of North Dakota I'm gonna go Montana uh 387 big win for Montana okay so Montana sitting at one and0 North Dakota sitting at 0 and one but North Dakota played Iowa State so what else is North Dakota gonna gonna be this game's at North Dakota uh which he North Dakota was a playoff team last season so reasonable Talent Montana did not exactly like the world on fire beating a Missouri Valley football team in Missouri State who is objectively at this point worse than North Dakota but the Intrigue here early in the season you know in the Big Sky we had a lot of quarterback turnover last couple years so a lot of schools are going to be figuring out what they're doing offensively uh Montana has two quarterbacks they played Logan five looked like he made a claim to take that starting position um and Junior Bergen by the way Junior Bergen did not play against Missouri State so that matters but U Montana struggled early however Montana struggled early last season and really got things together finished as the national runnerup so I'm not going to overreact to a slow Montana start I am curious about what they do quarterback wise because Bobby ha is famous for having never developed a quarterback Logan f is a junior he's been around for a while K aat is a red shirt freshman he does not have experience there so um honestly I think with that as the background you exp f is going to take over but Montana is strong defensively they're always going to be that way under Bobby ha so I am picking Montana uh to win this game and with that we have one final game Western Oregon D2 at Idaho State Idaho State I want to be cheeky and pick Western Oregon just for fun but I'll go Idaho State too so the one thing that I'm willing to be flippant about right now with other teams in the Big Sky is D2 games um I I absolutely do not care about when any Big Sky team is playing D2 or like when na is like you know when they're when they're playing Lincoln but I I gotta say for Idaho State um there is a little bit of intrigue there Jordan cook looked Jordan cook had a rough outing against Oregon State and the quarterback who did not have a rough outing for for Ido state is Kobe Tracy transfer from Utah Tech at Utah te Tech Tracy played a decent amount uh through through through four 19 touchdowns and 12 picks last season so he produced at the FCS level I expect that he's going to take over as the starter um pat patty faks in the comments section agrees that that's probably what he expects gonna happen with Kobe Tracy which is which is a little shocking uh oh by the way Tom Kendall saying Tracy will start per baby hawk meeing coach Cody Hawkins so hey paying attention to how how Kobe Tracy looks but um otherwise Idaho state gets a D2 win I don't care about those teams comment section lot of agreement with us Steve citz I'll stand with the professor and not comment on teams that play lower division teams uh Ron lowney the Grizz are in trouble we've got sorry I'm gonna just cycle back to the comment section most obviously everyone's picking Idaho state to win pretty easy uh we're a little bit mixed on Montana uh we got Steve Herz picking a 41-21 Montana win we got James Aldrich James good to see you here dude uh pick in North Dakota to win 42-9 uh we got James Jacobs Montana's overrated 24 22 Hawks um I got look I got a scroll back I gotta find where um Colin Hughes brought this up and La last season the big talk was firing Bobby ha U now part of that was self-inflicted on ha's end because he didn't sign an extension which makes him easy to walk away from but the joke being like it's very Mercurial very Mercurial fan base very temperamental fan base some people might say kind of boisey State esque uh if if you know if I may but anyway um you guys thanks for joining us uh game kicks off at 1:30 where can you watch it you can watch it on True TV if you if you like3 12:30 sorry 1230 yeah 1:30 mountain time so there there's a world where yeah yeah I was not it's not that I was wrong I just wasn't precisely right uh kicks off at 12:30 Pacific Time 1:30 Mountain Time True TV if you're thinking what in God's name is true TV HBO max if you're thinking what in God's name is HBO Max then Max all sure max if you're thinking what is that um just Google watch Idaho Wyoming it's you're gonna need to stream the game we get hey we get to re we get to be reacquainted to to me um it's hysterical to me that we're in the Big Sky and I honestly like that uh our streaming situation is better than most conferences I'm counting like power five okay Oregon had that you know their game was blacked out regionally for a lot of providers against you know the idah Oregon game and that's big 10 Idaho no dude ESPN plus it's one thing they're they're all in the same network once you get to the conference season easiest thing in the world I honestly would not want to change places with virtually any other conference which is to say hash lateral move uh with that said guys thanks everyone for joining if you haven't listened to my episode from from
