and smash that like button who that our final time going up to Irvine California to check in with our buddy Ross Jackson locked on Saints louisian sports.net uh I'm going to miss our chats daily man you've been part of my day now for three weeks like every single day for three weeks but we appreciate you man how are you oh I'm good I was just going to keep calling I love it come on come on man 5 o' let's do it it's the Matt and Ross show every single day at 5 I'm down yeah I was just gonna call sorry well hopefully when you do that we have better news than we've had mostly throughout these updates because we talked a lot about injuries and I guess it's fitting that the final day we have another big one and that's that yeah uh rased Shahed uh a toe foot Rashid Shaheed Injury injury I hear toe and I get really really nervous man um what what do we know yeah completely understandable toe injuries and the New Orleans Saints have been oil and water here over the course of the past few years uh and have led to some of the most you know larger storylines an NFL level story lines and so you'd like to avoid that here with a guy that's that to be your wide receiver too and set to be one of your most dynamic Playmakers on the team Matt you and I were just talking about how much they loved having him back uh because of that speed and everything that he was able to add so uh definitely one to keep a close eye on because again the track record with toes has not been great I will mention that earlier in this off season we saw both Nathan Shepard and pton Turner leave with a toe injury miss a day and then come back okay so maybe maybe just maybe the fortune has changed when it comes to the toses uh but for this one when it comes to rashidah definitely a big one to watch because he's a guy that you need to be ready week one uh so hopefully that will be the case uh for Rashid jahed who also missed some time earlier in the in training camp with a hamstring injury so you know this is something that you just want to kind of keep a close eye on and make sure it doesn't turn into something else is there any wide Kevin Austin Jr receiver uh Sunday night against the Niners that you're particularly curious to see how they perform yeah um Kevin Austin Jr is is the big one for me he had a fabulous day again today uh he had a strong day yesterday as well today uh with a nice kind of catch and run over the middle of the field on a great delivery from Jake Hanner uh later on a touchdown from Jake Kanner in their sort of end of the game simulation that they ran uh which was 48 seconds left on the clock going from the defens is 45 uh and then being able to to drive in for a touchdown there and so I'm really excited to see him Dennis Allen kind of commented on him in Thursday's practice or after Thursday's practice saying that he basically had the they used him in a bunch of different positions uh last week against the Arizona Cardinals and so they felt like maybe some of the uh wires got got crossed a little bit for him so hopefully he's able to play a more focused role he sees himself as a little bit more of like a split end wide area ex receiver let's see if he gets more opportunities to just be that guy uh on Sunday and if he's able to maximize that against the 49ers um I want to ask you Jake Haener some some thoughts and maybe a preview of the the Sunday night game against ners but first from today any anything else or anyone else stand out today well Jay ker had a really strong day my my expect well get to my expectation for the preseason game is here in a little bit when we talk about the preseason game but I I thought that you know Jake Kanner has had two strong practices and just his competitive spirit is just something to watch like it is a spectacle he is pumped after every touchdown he is pumped after every first down he's pumped after every completion uh I'm convinced he's pumped after every successful handoff I mean this dude is just like The Vibes are always positive for him and so he had a really strong day again today obviously somebody that has been battling through a lot um as of late but he was really kind of a big standout for me another guy that stood out for me today again was Chase young I countered another two sacks for him okay today um just a dude that cannot stop making plays and and again we can have that conversation every offseason when it comes to training camp is it that the defensive line is good or is it that the defensive line isn't and all these other things but I mean we saw it against the F the excuse me the Cardinals in the preseason game last week uh we'll see if we get to see more of it again with starters against the San Francisco 49ers but I think that he is somebody that um so far has delivered what it is that the new Oran Saints wanted when they brought him in on that uh kind of incentive heavy contract staying healthy will be the big thing which of course the things have not really done successfully here over the course of training camp so far but if he's able to stay healthy then I think they might actually get a pretty good return on their investment there Derek Carr Ross Jackson Nola on Twitter Ross Jackson Nola of course locked on Saints make sure you're subscribed and leading our Saints coverage at louisian sports.net um okay let's talk about preseason game number two Let let's delve into just pick up right where you were with the backup quarterbacks yeah are we wait are do we know are we gonna see Derek Carr on Sunday or will it just be the backups I expect just by the typical pre-season Rhythm that it will be the backup quarterbacks but I think there's a chance that we see some starters I I just think that their performance against the Arizona Cardinals left so much to be desired then they lost the preseason or excuse me the the the joint practices my apologies they lost those joint practices against the Arizona Cardinals I asked Dennis Allen I tried I asked him if he you know if losing those joint practices was gonna have any type of impact on how they did it it's on me for asking a yes or no question which Matt as you know is probably not the greatest thing to do uh but I was given a yeah maybe yeah but you know he wasn't gonna he wasn't going to commit to giving that information away before talking to the team about it I understand that uh but I do think that there is is a world in which not having those preseason games excuse me that those joint practices does impact what they plan to do in the preseason games whether that means getting another round for the starters or showing a little bit more of their system perhaps against an unfamiliar opponent so I can see it going either way but my expectation is that Spencer Rattler will be the quarterback that finishes the first half whether he starts or not we'll see what that means for Derek Carr but I expect that he'll be the one to finish the first half and then Jake Kanner gets the second half the reverse of what we saw last week okay uh that does make sense so who Roster Bubble we're getting to the point now also Ross where and it's it's different the way that they do roster Cuts now where it's not in phases but who are roster bubble guys like not guys that we know aren't going to make the team Camp B it's like who are roster bubble guys that Fe you may feel like okay it's important that this player have a big day on Sunday night yeah I would probably look at I mean a lot of these guys that are that were starters last year are pretty safe I think that what you're really looking for is kind of the depth players and things like that guys like you know that could end up being surprises like a you know Mark Evans who is with the team a lot uh through last season uh a guy like um uh I was gonna mention Landon young uh being another guy to to watch out for although I think Landon Young's pretty safe he could be one of those guys where if he struggles too much during a preseason game then maybe the conversation starts to go another way one that's really interesting to me and that I've been watching over the course of the preseason and things seem to going his way right now is JT gray you know JT gray has been a long time safety for this team special teams Captain has been very valuable to them when they moved on from Justin Hardy and Chris banjo the reason why they were happy to do that with these guys that were core special teamers was because of how good JT gray was he's been dealing with some injuries here over the course of the past couple of seasons and so the Saints bringing in guys like Will Harris bringing back Ugo amatti who's right now dealing with injury bringing in you know undrafted free agent safeties like a Miller Bradford adding a guy like Stanley Morgan uh Jr who is a you know long-term gunner in longtime gunner in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals that kind of indicated to me that maybe they would be looking at either who's going to be that guy opposite JT gr or potentially that guy in place with JT gray so him and the other specialist interesting enough of the other ones that I would be watching on the bubble as that kicker and punter battle has continued throughout training camp I Kicker Punter guess that's a good way to to to punctuate it are are both those jobs still up for grabs I would say so I mean I think Blake did a really good job today he was seven of eight on his field goals I thought Lou Hedley punted well today but the the punter battle between the two Aussies of of Lou Headley and Matt hayball has been one that has raged on here throughout Camp Matt hayball had a really strong day yesterday of several punts over 5 seconds he had like a 61 yard punt the other day or 60 plus yard punt the other day those are numbers that we didn't see from the sinks last year um but Lou Hedley has now added more of that traditional NFL style Punt and so does that end up kind of getting him in the right place so that's definitely one that has that is waged on and then Blake groupy I think you know had to deal with a little bit of that push from Charlie Smith drilling a game-winning field goal in his first ever NFL or American football action obviously it's gonna make a lot of waves but I thought he had a strong Camp uh this week so I think seeing more preseason performance is going to be more important for those guys uh in that room but I think it's still a battle to watch Ross Jackson locked on Saints louisian sports.net he on Twitter Ross Jackson
