Well, we've been hearing a lot about Springfield, Ohio, after the influx of Haitian immigrants to the city made national political news because of an unfounded claim that immigrants were eating pet. Now Governor Mike DeWine says the real problem in the area is the strain on resources. And that includes. >> An increase in traffic problems. Nbc four's Delaney, Ruth spoke today to win Ohio Bmv official and she joins us now in the studio with what she learned about all of this, calling Kerry the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles says the agency has received a lot of questions over the past few days. >> Leaders there say people are asking about the process for immigrants to obtain driver's licenses and how much training is required before getting behind the wheel. >> Charlie Norman is the registrar for the Ohio Bmv. There is no separate process for immigrants to get driver's licenses, right? He's our or shorten the process. >> It's the same documentation and training and testing protocol that that anyone who is applying for a driver's license and why it was done into whether you're a citizen or an immigrant. Norman says you must prove your legal name date of birth. Social Security number Ohio, residents. >> And U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status in order to get a license or ID of any kind. But under Ohio law, anyone 18 and older does not have to go through any kind of drivers. Educational course. >> They just need to pass a knowledge test and a skills test behind the wheel that written tests can be in a different language. But the driving instructor will only speak in English for the in car test. We do not allow a language. Aides are interpreters to be a part of that process and they're not allowed in the car with you. >> And people who are individuals who are testing have to be able to understand high wind warnings, traffic signs and basic directions given in the English language. But Norman says driver education is really important. That's why the Ohio traffic safety office has been working with the Haitian immigrants in Springfield to teach them the basics of driving. Judy Converse with the Traffic Safety Office says they've offered a couple classes in the Haitian immigrants. First language. >> For money or samples, classes were full. You know, there was a demand for people in the community wanted to come and learn. They wanted to come and become a safer driver here. We also work with the bnb to create a video that's in Haitian Creole. That explains the basic steps on how to get a driver's license in Ohio and kind of what the expectations are for being on the road, you know, and what education opportunities are out there. Norman says he wants to put the rumors about Haitian immigrants having a different door easier process to get a license to rest. There is no shortcut. >> 2 drivers licensing.
