ready play one more opportunity for Pula to finish the job if she doesn't you want to talk about some pressure points we'll have them serve misses from Pula second ser toss up serve down shiant makes the return with the forehand Pula is there backhand crosscourt wide it misses from fantac and you have just witnessed the biggest moment in Jessica pula's tennis life she's into the semifinals of the US Open she upsets world number one eish fiant the underdog has come through and Jessica Pula will will fly the Stars and Stripes into a semifinal battle with karolina Muka tomorrow night and hello hello welcome back uh what a uh what a result this was look who's joined us hello how are you good how are you Matthew very good uh well I don't want to waste any time what did you think about about this result what a result it was for Jessica Pula yeah what a result indeed I mean we knew the summer that she had coming in you know winning in Canada getting to the finals of Cinci uh and just the the confidence that she has in her game this time around struggled with a couple of injuries earlier in the year obviously we know she's beaten igos fanch before three times before this you know including twice last year so she had the belief that she could do it seventh time in a major quarterfinal and boy did she execute her game plan I mean right from right from ball one I mean just the ball striking was was just phenomenal from the base but also the way she was attacking EA's second serve the way her forehand stood up in Baseline rallies the amount of you know shots she was hitting down the middle I thought to open up the angles as well um definitely go hard at the EA forehand you know with that extreme grip it's tough for EA to control I thought the court was a little too fast for EA I was kind of debating about the conditions coming in I thought if they played at night it would help EA a little bit more um especially with these lighter balls but also just court maybe a little bit cooler slower conditions but uh that wasn't to be I mean E I mean Pula was just on and I thought she served really well as well just her average pace of her first serve I don't remember it being this big 12 months ago so it was a really incredible performance from her ego will be disappointed with a few things especially in the second set when she managed to get the break back and you know she had some chances to hold for 4-3 but um it was it was a completely outstanding performance uh the tweet that John just put up I was I was uh asking about that earlier about when's the last time have there been two Americans in the semifinals of the same men and women's uh slam event apparently 2003 yeah uh at the US Open capriotti Davenport rodic agasse so obviously two decades it happens here um so good job by John finding that because I was asking about that earlier uh what did you think uh about shant tonight uh obviously frustrated from the very beginning it felt but she has this way of just getting into her robot mode as so many people like to call it and not making any mistakes she never got there tonight no and it was a poor start for her you know in the first game she double faulted breakpoint down but also just the forehand was was leaking a few too many errors even when Pula was just kind of feeling the conditions out not really hitting those really hard shots that I'm that I'm talking about um I think I think that actually is really what helped pigula Lucien up as the first game that she got a lot of Errors from IGA and you know that kind of set the tone early and she goes up double break as well double faulted again I mean she hit like seven unforced errors in the first two games and so that was that was very much unlike her but I thought after the first set I thought you know when she left the court that she would she would kind of reset and to some extent she did but um but pula's level really never wavered throughout and she just kept a really steady level whereas I thought EA was um yeah the poor start really hurt her you she couldn't afford to start out the way she did yeah yeah you're absolutely right and you know Pula had moments towards the end of that second set where I thought oh goodness she's getting a little tight um and and I even said if she dropped serve and it's five all probably think ego wins the second set and you'd probably favor her to win the third so even on a night where she was in so much control still she had to deal with some pressure moments and she passed those tests yeah she did I was actually thinking about that because I remember in Canada when they played uh in that coton night Jess match famously um uh last summer uh shant was down 2645 and piga ser for the second set and then actually got broken lost that second set inti was down 42 and somehow recovered and ended up winning it but um but this time around I felt like yeah I mean 40 love we already saw e had two winners the last serve was 65 miles per hour so she was quite tight at the very end and that was that was crazy I mean you can see on the screen here 36 unforced errors for for Shan Tech obviously you know a lot of that is also with how well Jesse played and was kind of forcing her the one other thing I wanted to highlight was Jessica pula's movement I thought it's really improved as well over the last one year because she's staying in points a lot longer she's using that backhand slice as well when she's on the defensive and also she's just like you know from from the corners she's just very quick and explosive as well on the forehand like when she's hitting a running forehand when she's hitting the forehand down the line changing direction so that also caused EA a lot of problems because she EA felt like she had to press she had to go for lines you had to kind of you know um like really go out of her comfort zone to win some of those points and flatten out a few more for hens whereas previously I think you know she could have she she perhaps pulled the trigger a bit too early but that's just because improve movement yeah she was great moving corner to corner tonight like you said I'm going to put you on the spot here um paga mukava Navaro sabinka what do you think about the uh final four here who you think is GNA survive and get to Saturday yeah so I'm really excited about the Pula um moova match they've only played once before this and that was in Cincinnati and that was already three sets and moova I'm in for her six tournament back she's looking fantastic uh she had a little bit of a kind of injury concern thing in the second set today I'm hoping really hoping that's nothing I'm going to pretend like it's it wasn't much and it was just kind of an in the- moment thing but assuming that's the case you know it's going to be it's going to be a really tight battle I think that semi-final could go right down to the wire between those two um you know especially with like just how well mova has been saving break points she's been coming forward serving and bullying as well so she's it's a completely different player to anyone that P has faced so far um she's not going to get a ton of Rhythm so um I'm I'm very curious how that how that comes through and usually after a big win like this um you know pula's kind of an understated person she's very mature very kind of level-headed so I think she'll be she will kind of be able to realize okay the job isn't done yet I'm going to you know try to go out and it's a quick turnaround already for the next semi-final no day off but I think uh I think i' make Pula a very slight favorite over moova uh tomorrow with just just the the level that I've seen today the amount of confidence you'll get with with this result and with and the win in Cincinnati yeah absolutely uh it's going to be a fabulous match uh the other semi-final 2 is going to be the first one novaro and sabalenka can't wait for that uh this was very enjoyable big congratulations to Jessica pugula uh moment of her life uh to finally make a slam semifinal if you enjoyed this video make sure you hit that like button don't forget to
