Lions talk live and you know what unlike the Green Bay Packers the lions are still undefeated this season so yes the Green Bay Packers fell in the first ever game played down in South America and yes we're going to have a little bit of an update date on Jordan love although it's nothing official just doing a little bit of Scooby dooing online looking through different resources and finding informations from this doctor that doctor on what it might be and what it could all mean for the Green Bay Packers and how that affects the Detroit Lions so as you can probably tell from the thumbnail here within today's topic is going to be something that Marcus Davenport and others have said about the Detroit Lions defense there is a growing belief amongst the the uh I guess you could say the national media and obviously the Detroit Lions players the Detroit Lions defense might just be one of the better ones in the League this year so far after watching the first couple games I'd say there's real good strong chance at the start of the season if we're as aggressive as I'm anticipating we could be one of the better defenses in then we'll have to see how things play out over time all [Music] now all right five headlines now let's roll with it Detroit Lion season opener is this weekend what to know about parking and road closures so go to CBS Sports you can find this if you are going to make the venture over to Detroit for the big game if you're going to check it out you probably do want to know about some of the everchanging road conditions in Michigan as we all know hey mi Michigan's spring summer and early fall our Prime Times work on road so it is that time of year may want to make sure your course is okay all right uh summer hamstring injury is uh was a quote hot stove end quote moment for Detroit Lions running back jir Gibbs USA Today and we all get it it was a big scare when we heard about him having his injury we all wanted to know with the star the prize the playmaking running back that is Gibbs uh for the Detroit Lions be available week one we're thankful that he's near 100% or is 100% by this point but yes it was a real opportunity for him to work on some other things other than running we talked about when the injury happened that maybe this would be some time for him to log a lot of repetitions on the jugs machine turned out he did just that among other factors to try to improve his mental game understanding The Playbook understanding the route structures anything he could while not putting physical duress on that hamstring he did just that and it may have made him a better player overall as if you want read the story I think it's a good read all right uh kickoff returns are still rare in NFL Detroit Lions the special teams coach Dave flip says it's not worth the gamble Detroit Free Press Dave brette I thought this was an interesting take because you know just me my personality especially how I coach I want to swing for the fences every time I am probably way too much Rob Deer if some of you guys get that reference uh if I get a chance to hit it I want to yeah I want to go for the home run all the time I would have the same approach as a football coach that anytime we have an opportunity to put points on the board we're going to go for it we're going to always put pressure on the other team so I thought this was a just a different take and it it is a good take from coach Flip about why he doesn't always push his team to try to go for the big plays so you want to hear I guess kind of a non Dan Campbell approach to things go and check out coach Flip he's got something to say all right next will be hard lessons have made Jack Campbell better the Detroit news we all know that hey he was the second leading tackler for the Detroit Lions last year and that's something to say because this was a pretty overall good defense last year yes the secondary Was Not Great by any stretch of the imagination but Jack Campbell his performance last year I think if he didn't play on a team that had a leapor or a Gibbs you probably would have paid more attention to him or Brian bch too let's not forget him either but Jack Campbell's performance as a rookie linebacker Mike with the Green Dot at times I thought was pretty overall good he though apparently if you read the story is somebody who's always looking to be perfect always grinding trying to improve so what he do this off season he put a lot of time in trying to make sure this second year he can make a significant jump if this all holds water if he really puts in this type of work I think there's a real further chance that he could be one of the upper echelon middle linebackers at least in the NFC North I won't burden him by saying in the NFC or the whole league but he could make a significant jump forward and how will that affect today's uh main top we'll have to wait and see all right last of the five headlines now Lions Dan Campbell has become the coach he always wanted to be this is from uh Colton pouncy of the athletic even though I didn't go Colton pound's name in there It Is by him so we all know Dan campol loves coaching when he first started he didn't wasn't sure he wanted to become a coach once he retired from the NFL he really sat around what is he going to do next thought about this thought about that thought about it appears he thought about going into like insurance sales and such and that's when Shawn Payton approached him about getting into coaching he did that he mored his way up uh eventually worked for Shawn pyton we all get the story but over time he really became in enthralled with coaching found he had a passion for it and started finding out he was pretty good at it Dan Campbell has come a long way if you go back to watch that first season with the Lions to where he is now he's a vastly different person a vastly different coach as I think we could say that for Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson all these guys started off with very little experience they've worked their way up and you can see it how it affects the the field all right let's go ahead and get into our next topic of the day and that is going to be uh NFC North news and notes only going to be a little bit here we're just going to focus on the Green Bay Packers I'm not going to worry about the other two teams all right so the obviously last night good news for Detroit Lions in that the Green Bay Packers fell to the Philadelphia Eagles but as you guys probably all woke up aware e either you stayed up to watch the game or you just you know woke up today and saw the highlights Jordan love did get an injury there are a number of doctors who have put out reports last night watching the film or early this morning my brother Tim sent me some some of you guys sent me some stuff and they did talk about it so it seems like the general consensus for Jordan love is it's anywhere from a high ankle sprain to an MCL uh damage to there is some potential that it could be an ACL injury what this means we're all going to have to speculate until we get actually get confirmation if you're a Packers fan right now I'm sure this is was not a great night's sleep now you did lose the game but you might have potentially lost your quarterback for at the least probably a a few weeks there is some potential for the season so where this takes the Green Bay Packers we'll have to wait and see but hey I I don't wish injury on anybody but if he uh if he misses a game with the Lions hey I won't be sad but I hope he is okay all right I'm not going to dive on that too much just because really we don't play them for a little while so there's at least the morning update on Jordan Love's situation now let's go ahead and get over to just the injury updates going into this game so we'll try to as you guys watched Lions talk live in the past the day before the game and we'll reiterate this if there's any updates tomorrow game day we'll give you guys a bit of an injury report all right uh nothing probably huge as far as the headlines here but Detroit questionable J reader limited practice quad injury defensive tackle doubtful fiti malanu limited practice ankle we also know it's an Achilles injury safety and then out is Lauren Strickland no practice thumb safety my guess is Strickland he's got to have a broken thumb I know I was talking about it yesterday's show but to me I don't think there's any way he's not on the field as a cornerback or excuse me safety your secondary Personnel unless that thing is broken if it's broken he's got to have the club on it basically and just really limits what a secondary Personnel can do because they're going to have to tackle mostly with their upper body and their hands reach out grabbing can't do that probably aren't going to be very effective all right uh now let's go over to the Rams real quick uh Rams questionable R havenstein uh limited practice so they did not let him practice yesterday and that's three straight days that's their starting right tackle for those who do not know my guess is man even if he's able to go tomorrow he's going to be pretty limited you haven't practiced this week really you haven't gone through reps yes maybe he grinds it out or whatever but I got to think man unless the other guy behind you is complete trash I'm probably having uh havenstein out tomorrow because you haven't gotten reps with any of this offensive line it's the first game of the season we got dudes playing out of position as we all know Jonah Jackson's going to play center not guard we got a backup left tackle now starting because the the starting left tackle uh is out because of a suspension I'm thinking that's probably a bad situation for Aon uh Darius Williams says we have breaking news on early this week is out he's got put on the IR while this isn't an injury news I guess for whatever reason I did put in there Ernest Jones is out that is the linebacker the star linebacker for uh the Rams he was traded and then the backup to Williams uh that's a kobby Durant he practiced in full yesterday he's coming off a hamstring injury so this is the first time he has practiced ractice he's got limited reps limited snaps if that hamstring has any kind of questions or if he's just not up to full conditioning this could really Aid the Detroit Lions all right with all that out of the way enough of the jibber jabber let's get to the main topic of the day all right main topic of the day so as you guys are all aware um Marcus Davenport is new to Detroit Lions this season but he's not new to this coaching staff he knows Dan Campbell he knows Aaron Glenn from his time with the Saints and you know they were both gentlemen there during his stay there they're very familiar with him which is why I believe it played a factor in them wanting to bring him into the Detroit Lions he came out yesterday had a bold statement that hey we he thinks being around the league as much as he has between the Saints in Minnesota and now with Detroit he does believe that Lions have the makeup to be a top five defense what else would you want a player to say about his own team I get that part but now let's Scooby Do It one layer more lets us as fans and the do crew talk about it could he be right if we look at the defensive line DJ reer Al mcneel Aiden Hudson let's remove Demarcus Davenport from it do you think that's one of the better core three of in the entire NFL trying to be as as I guess non-fan as he can be as as neutral as he can be I look at it and I say yeah that's three pretty good dudes up there it's going to be hard to find three others better than that clearly better I should say across the NFL would I say they're at the least a top eight to top five unit right there yes I would the linebacker core as I've talked about before I think we're we're not great we're not bad we're somewhere in the middle we like most of the NFC North but to be fair if you look over the NFL nowadays I don't really think there's many teams with vastly different linebackers the linebacker position really has kind of fallen down the ranks of uh the importance in NFL it's no longer a primary asset it's now kind of a secondary asset and I think the Lions Jack Campbell as we mentioned before if he really does make this big jump this year he could push that group into a whole new level he's very athletic very big we all get it his Ras scores were off the charts you know one of the greatest ever in the NFL uh scouting Department draft and all that combined things of that sort so now look at the secondary Brian Branch I think everybody would agree as a safety a playmaker in the secondary he's pretty rare he's got the potential the components to be one of the better ones in the League Kirby Joseph I've talked about it before I think he is great in zone coverage I think he is m in manto man responsibility so as long as you're playing him in zone you're playing to his strengths the cornerback room is the big question mark because out paper it looks like it's vastly improved but paper doesn't mean anything it matters what you do on the field I think we will be noticeably better than we were last year as does that make us Elite I don't know when you combine all all three layers and what I'm anticipating Aaron Glenn's going to do this year I think it's a good recipe for sure that we could be potentially a top 10 maybe top five NFL defense with all those factors coming in and yes I haven't even mentioned my my favorite Detroit Lion as far as the defensive ends and that is James Houston his impact if he's returned to full health and he's using the right situations I do think him and Derek Barnes have a very big outstanding year blitzing more often than not and using a lot of stunts and pulls to get to the quarterback all right those are my takes on it what are your takes though I want to see in the good or way better than any of the defenses I've seen you know last night's defense and I get this is part of the down product or the byproduct I should say of not playing guys in the preseason is that when you get to the regular season this is their first real goal with things and yes I get some teams have some teams haven't but you can see a lot of the offenses a lot of the defenses they're just trying to figure things out watching the offensive line L blocking assignments and this isn't just for one team this isn't just for the Ravens it's for the Packers it's for everybody there's a lot of confusion going on and quarterbacks are getting hit you could see plays getting busted up was it the Philadelphia's first two drives they had turnovers because you in part because the offensive line didn't know how to negotiate a blitz this is also why tomorrow I predicted that I think the lines are going to win by a comfortable amount not only are the offensive lines not used to each other yet nor the terminology or who to slide to but in the Rams case man they've got dudes coming off the street to play if I'm Aaron Glenn I am probably the first entire half every defensive snap's probably a blitz I want to get after guys and see if they can handle it yes they'll hit some plays because of it but I'm G to get a whole lot of hits on Matt Stafford that running backs and the backfield Williams and everybody else because I'm GNA say Hey you can have your big shots we're going to put you into the turf over and over and over let me see how that tastes Matt Stafford and it's not that I don't like Matt Stafford but I'd be doing this to any quarterback because of how I'm watching offensive line struggle so much early this season all right Brent uh greeting salutations do complete defense in the NFC North maybe the NF c um you know it's definitely possible I would say you know you you've got some real good defenses in the north you've got it in the NFC where the everything shakes out man that's that's a opportunity to prove yourself on a weekly basis but the Lions do have a lot of real good young talent and I think that young Talent is being developed by some great offensive line coaches defensive line coaches linebacker coaches I mean the Lions have a lot of very good positional coaches and they're doing a heck of a job during their tenure here in Detroit of developing that Talent Trey what's good everybody question mark anyone watched that game last night question mark that field was terrible no way should have uh there have been a game on it there have been a lot of comments about it I know I commented during the game on micro Mike's uh social media whatever he had a comment about the the field service and I went ahead and said hey man the field service it it's clearly a soccer field and I mean that in a good way you know it's probably great for players to land on fall on there's a lot of give but as far as the side it's it's not really set up for the the NFL or football type spikes and such that's why you saw so much of it cutting up every time guys you know put on the Jets and burst you could watch it getting thrown up um you could even see was it the lead field judge did something to his lower leg and I don't think he returned to the game some of that's I mean there's there's pluses and minuses playing on sided field like that there's for an NFL game I'd say it probably wasn't n ideal but I guess wait and see what the players have to say about it see uh Tori one more day to go Detroit is going to explode for this game I think you're right on that I think man the tailgating might start around 11 a and it might not stop until halftime of the game I think you're G to see this crowd really push th that Ford Field decimal win by 10 plus points I mean if I'm La as a coach I want to go out there and win no matter what it is Rock paper you know scrimmage whatever it's just how I'm wired and it doesn't always work for everybody let me tell you but if I'm La if this offensive line really is that bad and I get a sense early in that game that it's almost unsafe for my quarterback who's not Young by any stretch of imagination I might say hey discretion is the better part of valor you know just kind of say why don't we move on from this game we get our left tackle back get the right tackle healthy since he hasn't done anything in three days and maybe just say hey we're going to play for the next 16 games not this particular game although I don't think there's any chance Matt Stafford's letting him do that but I would at least be thinking it as a coach all right see uh so how many times are we getting to Matt uh Matty deoro question mark I'm thinking we're going to hit him often I do too I think there's real potential we could get somewhere in the neighborhood of three to six sacks Now Matt Stafford gets rid of the ball maybe as fast as anybody in the league but if you go back and look at his over the length of his career when he's pressured his completion percentage typically goes down from mid to high 60s into the 50s or 40s so when he's under pressure he's not always the most accurate quarterback just it's never been part of his game rolling out and throwing all over the field I mean he's just not that kind of quarterback if he remains in the pocket and he sound given time he is one of the best quarterbacks in the league in my opinion so you get to him you put pressure on him you know what probably going to f favor us Phil and we were worried about a Green Bay question mark or the Eagles uh sloppy football it was but opening week I mean it A lot's going to change by from week one to week three or four I can remember last year when the Bears started the season and they look terrible same with I want to say Green Bay too there are a lot of YouTubers saying you know they're trash we're going to beat them by you know gajillion points but the difference is when you haven't practiced anything in the preseason when you're started haven't been out there it takes a game or two or three for them to kind of all get on the same page and focus I do believe what we see out there will be vastly different four weeks into the season from those respective teams hey man good morning Dan the man and the one and only du crew enjoying a beautiful cool morning with my wooo the end zone but there was a lot of that stuff because it is opening day it is hey guys haven't practiced it's not like they were and I heard lus Brown talking about it on the x's and Bros yesterday morning it's not like when he played or guys in the 80s 70s 90s where hey you would get you know x amount of snaps the first preseason game second preseason game third preseason game you played the entire first half and then the fourth one hey that that was for everybody still trying to make the team um I do think there's some validity to have in everybody practice but then again if somebody gets hurt you're going to hear it from everybody that man they shouldn't have been out there in the game that didn't matter so uh to each their own and you do see some coaches practicing everybody like you know the Chiefs they have people out there but the Chiefs could have lost of week one just like anybody else see Detroit sports suck I think love Tes MCL if he did yeah he's probably out for if not the whole whole season going to be just about the whole season but again we're all speculating on what's what happened so we'll know for sure probably in 48 hours Detroit if you watch it in slow motion you can see something pop in love's leg Yeah uh one of the doctors that um you know I read the report on this morning says that very thing you can see that I I'll wait and see but it it doesn't look good for him you know thoughts and prayers from him I I know hey I want to beat the Packers as much as anybody I just don't want to do it because somebody blew out their knee or whatever I rather just kick their butt because they're at full strength to me as a coach or a player that's how you do it but if he a if he can't go I mean that's don't feel sorry for him I'll be telling the team before the game hey they don't have their quarterback you know what pad your stats get out there beat them down get it so by the third quarter when that you when they get out on the field man
