districts g j jones west torrens j burt port adelaide jay potter west adelaide ah day [Applause] norwood ah other [Applause] uh could i have your attention please everyone i could have your attention for one minute please i would like you to realize once again that the count is not official until it has been checked by the members of the south australian national football league the count is not complete until it is checked and will be back in a very short one [Applause] well now i believe the check has been completed ladies and gentlemen and so once again it's my pleasure to introduce the president of the south australian national football league mr don bremner thank you very much ladies and gentlemen i'm telling you something of course that you already know but it's my great pleasure to announce that the official winner of the 1970 mcgeary medal is barry robert from north adelaide [Applause] [Music] thank you mr brubner i presume now the meeting is closed officially and it's a wonderful chance to speak to a jewel mcgeary middles only two years ago we were standing uh perhaps in a different place discussing things with barry and i think everyone agreed that it was not the last time that he would be the recipient of a mcgarry medal because i think generally and i'm sure every sportsman in australia goes along with the fact that he does stand for what the mcgill what the mcgarry medal means the fairest and most brilliant barry [Applause] well you've been through all of this before but i'm sure that this must be a most exciting occasion for you barry uh and i'm sure that there would be people up at whyalla at the moment that would be probably dancing in the streets would you like to say hello to mum and the rest of them up there at toyota oh if they're listening i'd just love to say hello to everyone barry what's it like winning your second mcgeary medal i don't know it's pretty hard to answer actually barry you came down you had uh firstly where did you start playing football you started playing in wailer yeah in waler with the um the northweller cults um and then i played with the senior cults and then with the a's for a couple of years and then i came down here uh how long have you been down here in adelaide now uh this is my fourth season and tell me is there any one particular person that was uh one of the reasons for you concentrating on football in wyalon was there any one person that has sort of led you along the early ways no i don't think so probably just all the the chappies that used to coach me or and the other boys in the cult sides uh and well they were a great coach when i was playing a great in well barry there are a lot of people of course that were a little bit worried about uh your chances of winning because you've missed a couple of matches throughout the year how many games have you missed uh three missed three games and wins with a telly of 24 points which is a pretty remarkable achievement you came back uh for north adelaide last week you had a great victory over central districts and now you are in the four how far can north adelaide go oh i'm pretty confident and pretty hopeful that we'll we'll take it out this year depending on if we can get a few of our injured players back in the side and playing well but i think we can go a long way this year certainly hope so anyway barry your younger brother playing in north adelaide too must been a great kick to you yeah i was a particular thrill to have us both playing in the same side and i thought he acquitted himself fairly well the games he did play well all we can say is hardest congratulations from everybody here these umpires right down in front of us here i think there are seven of them here at the moment of the fellows that voted for you and i'm sure that everyone in south australia will be hardly endorsed the best and for the fairest and most brilliant award the 1970 mcgeary medal to barry roberton for the second time [Applause] [Applause] well ladies and gentlemen that was the situation here at the adelaide town hall we hope that you had some of the excitement some of the joy of this occasion and certainly we'll have some of the memories of this occasion for many many years to come on behalf of the news limited and channel nine i would like particularly to thank the south australian national football league for allowing us to make this telecast possible and to everyone who has assisted us in so doing our thanks to you all we hope that you have enjoyed the telecast at home and we hope that uh well that you will follow this great career of this champion footballer barry robin in south australia on behalf of the news and channel nine good night to you all [Music] you
