Scott Matlock On Harbaugh & Second Camp | LA Chargers

how's Camp Camp's been good yeah Camp's been really good what uh what's been different for you this year compared to last year obviously rookie year lot going on getting used to the league what's been different this offseason into camp for you I would say say confidence is the biggest thing you know being a rookie coming into league for the first time you're having to learn kind of all over again it's you're at a new level kind of have to relearn the game you know different speed you're going against different players different types of players who are the best of the best so you kind of have to learn learn it all again and this year feel more comfortable more confident you know a little bit more relaxed can go out there and just kind of cut it Loose you got some playing time like L the year how valuable was that in terms of like your approach to the offseason like knowing what you wanted to work on and stuff like that yeah definitely got some more playing time there at the end of the year and uh I would say you know as the year went on I got you know better and better each game which was the goal and at the end of the season I thought I thought I was playing my my best ball of that year and that just kind of set me off with a good with a good feeling good taste in my mouth kind of thing and it led me in a good mindset going into the offseason that you know if we handle this the right way and then should catapult me into this season and I can hit the ground running is is that kind of what you've done so far uh during camp and Mentor scheme hit the ground running gotcha yeah I think it's it's been been an easy Trend transition obviously we had OTAs to to learn everything and get comfortable but once we had training camp start I thought I mean I felt very comfortable in in the scheme and and everything that's going on obviously Playbook wise no worries but um it's been good yeah I thought I've been able to hit the ground running and obviously every day there's going to be something to work on and something to improve of course but football but overall yeah the workouts that Ben Herbert has been having you guys do after practice and stuff like that just what have you thought of those and does it kind of take you back a little bit to a college field because of that kind of stuff or or what what is your thought process on on that kind of my my thought on uh coach Herbert is he's I mean I personally love him um I love everything that he's been implementing into this program and his philosophy stuff that I've never really done before but I see the value in it I see how it affects not just my position but every position and football and how it can benefit um my position and and everybody else so I think it's been really good you know these fourth quarter finishers are just a way to get give us that Competitive Edge you know in the fourth quarter we're going to be our strongest and um you know it's just a little sprinkled to get a little bit extra work here and there and I think we're just continuing to you know sharpen our swords build our bodies and get ready for the seasona forward what do he kind of meant to the addition of him kind of meant to your guys defensive line group yeah huge I mean I've first met Puna in you know the off season and you know he's very soft spoken guy but he's a he's a he's a very awesome awesome person and a great teammate great locker room presence and he's obviously a great football player and I'm trying to watch him and learn the things he does you know especially in in the past game and even in the Run game he's a Wy o vet and he knows knows the game of football very well and knows how to play box and um I'm trying to learn from him just by watching how he practices and you know the things he's able to do so I'm very happy that he's a part of our room and I think he's going to have a great year from uh early on in in the spring like even back to April Coach Harbaugh had mentioned you as a guy who' really jumped out as a leader why do you think you were able to make such an early impression with with Coach Harbaugh um you know coming into this new this new staff in the OTAs my my my goal was to make a good first impression of course as any player would with a new staff a new head coach and and all that so I just wanted to make a good first impr impression and build off of what I did last year as anybody would and I just stuck to my roote stuck to who I am as a player as a person just was there every day you know Ted put in the work did everything that was asked of me and try to do more was try to be coachable you know with you know coach ston and you know coach Min and just trying to fit in their scheme as best as I could and and help the team in any type of way I can I didn't try and be Superman I just was trying to be me you know and everything I've done to get me to this point just you know continue to do it at a higher level so I just wanted to make a good first impression and thoughts on Jim har just we see that he works out with you guys that he does certain workouts just what have we kind of thought of of of that yeah I love uh Coach Harbaugh I think he's an awesome guy I think he's a great football coach um I'm really excited for this year and to see you know this little snit bit of of the offseason in this training camp so far I think uh I think this organization is headed in the right direction
