The state of child abuse in Utah, and what we can do about it

I'm Jordan Tracy in the last several weeks, a number of individuals have been arrested for crimes. >> Against children across the state of Utah, the most recent of which made headlines yesterday when a Provo mother was arrested for 76 charges of child crimes. ABC for Seneca Johns joins us live in the NEWSROOM. After looking into these cases and talking to officials about the state of based crimes in the state of Utah, Annika. >> All right, Jordan. So what I've learned is from August to now, there have been at least 7 instances where Utah police arrested suspects for child abuse leaving many wondering what signs should you look out for? And what ways can you help if a child is in a dangerous situation? >> Signs can come in multiple forms from physical like scars and cuts. Anything like the injuries of different various stages of healing. So bruises, all different colors or injuries that are inconsistent with the story that the child is giving. You get used to feel like it just doesn't make sense to emotional signs. New changes in a child's behaviors such as aggression or fear. That's >> not really speaking to their character. They're coming to school. They're hungry. They're dirty unkempt, things of that nature. All warning signs for talking with me. But whatever it may be, experts say it's important to recognize the signs and know what to do when you see that if you think a child is being subjected to harm, report it to your local law enforcement agency or to DCFS. >> Over the past several weeks, Utah has seen multiple cases of child abuse and child crimes. However, with these high profile cases bringing attention to forms of child abuse, that does not mean there is an increase in cases. So as we're looking at the data over the last 5 years. >> We're not seeing significant trends either way in a significant increase or decrease in the amount of child abuse and neglect that we're seeing. But what we are seeing is theirs a potentially a concern and the severity of some of the abuse that we're seeing that we're actively monitoring to see if there is an increase in the severity of the abuse. With that being said, preventing child abuse is still at an all-time high.
