Darth Vader's Thoughts on Luke Using ANAKIN'S LIGHTSABER - Star Wars Lore

[Music] after being taken by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar Anakin Skywalker's Jedi lightsaber remained on Tatooine for many years until it was eventually passed to Luke Luke used the lightsaber for 3 years until he lost it in a duel with Darth Vader however the movies never really tell us if Vader even noticed that Luke had his old lightsaber meaning we don't know what Vader thought of it or what his reaction was if he realized at least that was the case until the Canon Star Wars comics gave us the story I want to jump into the very first issues of both the 2015 main Star Wars series and the 2015 Darth Vader series which both take place before the empire strikes back I'm also going to pull some details from the cannon book Skywalker a family at war in this story Luke and Vader meet for the first time and have no idea of their relation to each other however Vader does notice that the young Jedi student possesses Anakin's lightsaber during a rebel raid on an imperial weapons Factory on simoon 1 Luke Leia Han and chewy were on the ground attempting to Sab sabotage the central power station however as the group fought their way through the facility Luke felt a disturbance in the force and wandered off alone in a long Corridor Luke heard the disembodied voice of Obi-Wan Luke said that he could sense Vader the man who had killed his father like I said at this point in the timeline Luke still believed that Darth Vader had murdered Anakin because this is before Empire obviously Luke believed himself strong enough to face Vader and he told Obi-Wan that he needed to confront the Sith Lord and end it all as Luke ignited his lightsaber Obi-Wan's voice told Luke to run but it was too late Vader was already there Vader told Luke that he held a lightsaber like an untrained child and he was not a Jedi he asked Luke who he was Luke replied that Vader had killed his father and the dark lord said that he had killed many fathers then Luke attacked first wildly swinging his blade and screaming in Rage but Vader easily parried his blow Vader commented that what he was witnessing was pathetic and wondered who had sent Luke there to die Luke revealed that he was on the Death Star when Vader killed Obi-Wan but Vader just interrupted him by pulling his lightsaber away with the force as soon as Vader held the weapon poised for a killing blow he felt the familiar craftsmanship of Anakin Skywalker for the first time since Mustafar he held the weapon of the Jedi Knight he had once B muttering to himself that he knew the weapon as he stared at the hilt the brief distraction allowed Han and Leia to smash through the roof with an Imperial Walker and Luke was able to escape into the ensuing battle however to Luke's horror Vader wielded both his old blue saber and his red Sith saber in the fight killing prisoners of the facility that the rebels were trying to help Escape Luke could do nothing as Vader used the blue blade in his Rampage eventually Vader was temporarily stunned by blasts from The Walker the rebels had hijacked and he dropped Anakin's lightsaber in the rubble using a speeder Luke retrieved the weapon and made his escape with his friends on the Millennium Falcon walking through the debris and Flames Vader watched the falcon fly away in silence then he wondered to himself why Obi-Wan had given that boy his lightsaber he realized that the boy was Obi-Wan's last great hope what the Master had died to protect on the Death Star while the boy may have been strong in the force he was untrained and Vader stated that the only person left to train Luke was him he vowed to find the young rebel and turn him to the Dark Side Learning that the boy possessed his old Jedi lightsaber further fueled Vader's obsession with finding him he believed that if he captured Luke he could extract all he knew about the Rebel Alliance and train him to be a weapon of the dark side side with the aid of Boba Fett Vader was soon confronted with the truth that the son of Anakin Skywalker lived and he learned Luke's name now aware that Luke was his son Vader understood why Obi-Wan had passed his old sabber to him amid the rage he felt Vader also felt his Humanity stir a tug on his conscience Anakin would have wanted to protect his son Vader however resisted the urge framing the impulse in service to the dark side and decided that if Luke could be turned he would no longer be alone so guys I really like this story I know some people have an issue with Luke and Vader fighting before The Empire Strikes Back but I don't if anything this comic actually fills in a plot hole from Empire when Vader calls Luke Skywalker as the Empire is attacking Hoth because that means he knows Luke's name at the beginning of the movie so this kind of answers how he knows Luke's name and why he's so obsessed with finding him but also keep in mind that in the expanded universe Luke fought Vader before Empire 2 in Splinter of the Mind's Eye they fight on mimon and that story is part of the overall Legends continuity it's mentioned in the encyclopedia Jedi versus Sith the essential Guide to the force and it's also mentioned in the Legends book the rise and fall of Darth Vader by ryer Windam so that's Canon to Legends this is obviously part of the new Canon current Canon so I don't have a problem with them fighting before episode 5 I think it's cool and I really like specifically that Vader takes the lightsaber and he holds it and he's shocked to realize that it's Anakin's lightsaber I really like in that panel too it's an exact parallel of how he killed Count Dooku inter Revenge of the Sith so I like that a lot and while I do think it is stupid that Luke would think he could fight Vader after A New Hope before he's even really trained like he hasn't trained with Yoda or anything um I think it's cool that he confronted him and I enjoy this issue I think that it's great to see this coincide with Vader learning that Luke was his son from Boba Fett and learning Luke's name and then he's like oh that's why ob1 gave him my saber I feel like that's just a great detail you know Star Wars is about generations and families and that's that's just an amazing insight for the character to have being like Oh yeah he's my son that's why Obi-Wan pass my lightsaber as like an heirloom so I think that's great I think the way that the 2015 Star Wars Invader series connect is great those Comics aren't my favorite to be honest the 2015 both of them both series get weird they have weird stories um the Vader one's not as strong as the 2020 or the 2017 version but but this specific story I do like I wanted to make this video talking about it because I think it's a missed opportunity that Vader never comments on it in the movie The the closest he gets to saying anything is in Return of the Jedi when he has Luke's lightsaber on Endor and he says I see you have constructed a new lightsaber but that doesn't even confirm in the movies that he realized Luke had Anakin's lightsaber so that's why I feel like this is one of those gaps in the story that just couldn't be answered in the movies in the original trilogy it's something that you have to look at other mediums for like the Books and Comics so that's why I wanted to make this video I thought it was a good little topic that I hadn't touched on yet so I hope that you guys enjoyed it make sure to like And subscribe if you did and thank you for watching and as always May the force be with you
