A Houston man is in the hospital battling West Nile virus. His family says he likely got it because of the increase of the mosquito population after Hurricane Beryl. Fox 26. Is Abigail Dye joining us? Live with a story you'll only see on Fox. Anthony, this is a really scary situation. I mean, mosquitoes are everywhere in Texas, especially with these swampy conditions that we're experiencing. And this man, he's been in the hospital for more than a month. He's been in the ICU almost that entire time. And luckily he was moved out of the ICU and into rehab last night. But he still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. John Hudson has been in the hospital since July 27th, battling West Nile virus. We know he's a fighter. He's fought for a month just to say, you know, to survive, survive this. So I believe he's going to give it everything he's got. His son, Nick Hawkins, now lives in New York. He flew down recently to spend some time with his dad. He's mostly paralyzed, he can wiggle his toes a little bit. And his fingers dialysis and heart problems and kidney failure and all these different things, all stemming from a bug bite. He says seeing him like this is unbearable. You see somebody who's been so strong your entire life, and then to see him so frail and suffering so much and in ICU, it's it it weighs on your heart, really heavy. August 9th, Harris County Public Health put out a release saying 615 positive. West Nile mosquito samples have been found right here in our county, and 23 human infections have been reported. It's not a million miles away. It's right here in our backyards. And even though I no longer live in Houston, you know, I, I want my fellow Houstonians, my fellow Texans, because I love the great state of Texas. Still I want them to know that this is a very real threat. And it's I don't want this to happen to anyone. Now, Public Health does say that they sprayed more than 81,000 acres of Northwest Harris County to try and mitigate this mosquito population. So this isn't something to panic about, but it's something to be aware of. And if you want to help Hudson as his family tries to help him recover, you can find that GoFundMe link on fox26houston.com
