Kilian Jornet Smashes Records - 82 Alpine 4000ers in 19 Days | Breaking News

[Music] Today's show is presented by Petzl Kilian Jornet climbed all 82 4000m peaks in the Alps in an incredible 19 days. Do this on your own, i.e. on foot or by bike. This meant he beat the existing best time by more than two thirds. As a ski mountaineer and mountain runner, Kilian Jornet has won pretty much everything there is to win and so he increasingly turned to challenges outside of the competition circuit. His projects have dimensions that are often difficult to grasp. In 2023 he ran through the Pyrenees in 8 days, climbing 177 peaks in the mountain range between Spain and France and covering 485 km and over 43,000 meters in altitude. With his latest project in the Alps, he is scaling his challenge to a new dimension. He started the Alpine Connections project on August 15, 2024 with the ascent of the easternmost peak of the 4,000 meter range, the Piz Bernina. After this tour, he cycled to the Bernese Oberland, where he rode Lauteraarhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn . After four hours of sleep, Jornet set off from the Finsteraarhornhütte and completed one of the hardest stages of his project. 99 km and 7,890 meters of altitude were necessary to climb six other peaks, including Mönch and Jungfrau. Jornet was on the road for over 32 hours at a time. But that's not enough. After a 40-minute power nap, the exceptional athlete got on his bike and rode 40 km to the start of the next stage. Jornet completed another monster stage on day 6, after a feudal 6 hours of sleep for his standards, Jornet raced over the peaks of Täschhorn, Dom and Lenzspitze in 21 hours and added Alphubel, Allalinhorn Rimpfischhorn and Strahlhorn in the afternoon. In total he covered a distance of 47.7 km and an altitude of 6,139 meters. Even though there was never any talk of a record attempt during the project, it quickly became clear that the top runner would pulverize all records. And that's what he did . 19 days after the start of his project, Jornet successfully climbed the last peaks of the project with Barre and Dôme des Écrins and summed up: “That was without a doubt the greatest challenge I have ever faced in my life. Mentally, physically and technically, but it was also probably the best challenge of all. I'm having a hard time categorizing all the feelings right now. I will never forget this project." In order to be able to classify Jornet's performance , it is worth taking a look at comparable 4000 series projects. In 2008, the Italians Diego Giovannini and Franz Nicolini managed to climb all 4,000 meters on their own in 60 days. Ueli Steck narrowly missed this record in 2015 with 61 days. Peter von Känel and Chrigel Maurer completed the 82 peaks much faster this summer as part of their XPeaks project. They climbed all the peaks in 51 days. They used their paragliders wherever possible and completely dispensed with support vehicles. Even if the projects mentioned are not comparable with one another , for example in terms of tools or third-party support, one thing is certain: Kilian Jornet eclipses all previous records with his 19 days. As part of his Alpine Connections project, Jornet covered a total distance of 1,207 km, climbed 75,344 meters in altitude and only allowed himself an average of 5 hours and 17 minutes of sleep. Is that still human? Numerous specialists will investigate this question, because Kilian Jornet will disclose all of the medical data that was collected during the project. So Jornet's accompanying doctor, Dr. To quote Jesus Alvarez in advance of the project: “This expedition is in a completely different league than anything before. The demands on Kilian will be so extreme that we cannot predict the physiological or even genetic changes.” It was already possible to predict back then, and it can now be said with certainty, after the completion of the mega project, that Kilian Jornet is writing alpine layers with his series and is pushing the boundaries of what was considered humanly possible into new spheres. Oor in the words of the top French alpinist Benjamin Védrines: “You have Didn't think it was possible, you did it."
