to grounded TV 39 what have we got today for you well we're going to be talking about some breaking news today in Canada that people have been waiting for for quite a while is to hear the sentencing on the coups 4 and what that really looks like what we have so far we're going to be watching a couple videos um but before we get into it um I just want to ask you sa uh what do you know about this so far and what is your stance on it um I remember initially into it and I mean I don't think anybody's going to be surprised if you've been here before I probably obviously think that these people were out of line um specifically the cots guys uh everything I've read there's quotes from police officers unless the police officers are just lying but uh they sent undercover officers to infiltrate the protest and uh I guess they had like a whole plot like this guy thought um see if I can I don't know if it's even worth pulling it up here but some of these quotes are super crazy um yeah so from what I know about it it here sorry you can go yeah I was just gonna say so what I know about it is is this was kind of all unfolding at the same time as the freedom Convoy I know there's been a mixture of people involved uh denouncing the cuds 4 saying they were and uh saying they weren't involved with with the main protest or the organizing of the protest however today uh I think it's important to note uh Tamara Lich did release a tweet on X basically stating that she uh let me actually pull up the Tweet right here so I can read it for you guys don't want to give you any wrong information here um you know I just think it's in interesting because like yeah it is it is pretty crazy if you looking at the evidence that that the court that that the jury was presented I think it would be hard not to find at least the two that were charged from what the jury was presented and what the evidence we are being given suggests um yeah like I said like the only thing that would really uh redeem these guys as if the police were just outright lying about what they were saying but there's one quote I put into into my actual notes Here Constable this isn't even the one but I guess this guy thought he said the government wanted to Trevor checkley wrote that olenic olenik was the guy who told the original undercover police officers that they were waiting for a delivery uh indicating that it was weapons and then they witnessed this is on February 10th Anthony olick tells two undercover female police officers that he was expecting a delivery which officers understood to be a bag of firearms police officers state that they observe olenic Chris carb and Jerry Moren receiving the package uh olenic is quoted by police saying olenik told the uos if the RCMP came in with Force they would meet they would be met with greater force and that the RCMP were the enemy Olen also said he was willing to die for the cause and then yeah there's like other crazy quotes too but yeah so he thought what a lot of people thought at the time which is that the government was like overreaching a whole bunch and I guess he thought it was just going to keep getting worse right and that nothing was going to get reversed ever you're going to get a ding in a second I'm turning down my headphone volume yeah I I I think the biggest thing with this is like my personal belief is I don't think I don't know like like where people were at the time like I I kind of get what you're saying but I think most people who were involved in the freedom Convoy were downtown Ottawa and they were more concerned about just even the people at the border I mean it's disruptive I don't I don't agree with that type of I don't agree with any of the First Nations protests that block like oil pipelines and uh Railways and stuff I don't agree with any of that stuff I think it's um you're hurting the wrong people you know well the crazy thing is too is like when I you should hurt anybody but you know like you're affecting your fellow citizens you're just making your cause unpopular like originally I don't think they were arrested on those charges from the Alle from the wir tap that law enforcement allegedly used with authorization only from the emergencies act let's not forget about that I don't even actually know if that's true anymore I thought initially but they actually had a task force set up all the way back in uh beginning of January like before any of this even happened they already had something in place because they saw it stirring online and I'm sure they got more funding when they stuff actually started to happen but they had a thing called project Hendon was a task force designed by the op to tackle bubbling extremism during the covid-19 P pandemic so where I first heard about this uh sentence this morning was from she basically Tamara Lich on Twitter uh retweeting Sheila gun Reed who essentially communicated that yeah the the coup sentences are as follows ol sentence is sentenced to six years carbert is sentenced to 6 and A2 years and I don't know about the other two I think maybe those are the only two that are serving time because it seems like the other two kind of ratted the other two out or told you know like I I don't know ol just dry snitched on himself like he didn't mean to but he was talking to feds uh basically telling them the and bragging about stuff too he apparently called one of the guys a sniper he said he's a sniper like see I would like to know more about this if you guys in the chat have any more information on this something that's off Main off the mainstream media off the like some more anecdotal evidence or theories and stuff behind this I'd love to hear it um from what I've heard so far it doesn't look very good um but they are basically being treated as like borderline domestic terrorists like they have there's subject to Lifetime firearms prohibitions and DNA submission yeah that's pretty insane like that's something reserved for like high high offenders uh with the DNA submission part that that's pretty crazy the the it's a fake trial okay why do why why why is it a fake trial though why is it a fake trial like I'm just like I I would like to know because to me it seems very yeah this is clean cut we got it all figured out and that to me is like a little odd so I guess that's more of what I'm saying but I don't know I haven't done a full Deep dive into this yet like At first caught my attention when I heard it unfolding but I didn't understand exactly what they're being I thought they were basically political prisoners that were arrested so solely on trumped up mischief charges that was my impression of it the pipe bomb thing that flips is talking about as well I don't even know if I can show this on stream uh but basically they went to olenic the guy who was telling them about the guns they went to his rural Southern Alberta property and they sieged uh police located fire Firearms so it was he's right about it being I don't know if it was 200 miles but like away away from the protest yeah take the pipe bombs out of it it still looks like a fullon Arsenal like machetes Firearms 36,000 rounds of admission tactical yeah like like these guys were were planning to to do some crazy stuff here so I I just I I don't know whether or not it was you know justifi I don't I just have a hard time I I don't feel like violence to this extent they feel like we had we we would have had to be in a much worse state for that to be justified like I feel like I think they were just preparing for that M yeah and you know what maybe you're right maybe they were just preparing because they were afraid like most Canadians for the first time but however the way they did this the things they said yeah the people they chose to work with it basically LED down this horrible train where now that led to this trial and I would like to know more about the trial um they did bring Firearms which was a bad decision with RCMP framed and honeypotted they Ed two female undercover officers that's what I was going to say too I didn't know that part of it it is pretty funny because he probably was bragging right that's how all those uh you ever watch it's just like have you ever watch those project verites uh no things well what they do is they'll send either a guy uh or a girl usually it's the guys go on gay dats uh and and they'll get the person drunk and they'll kind of like start talking about stuff and trying to get them encouraging them to say crazy things and uh they'll get these like little sound bites from staffers and uh they'll release it like as evidence of people admitting to conspiracies anyways um let's get into the what what what videos we have queued up for today just kind of go over it a bit more um just one last thing actually before we do that I've just been reading just I was just looking at what Marty up north also tweeted about it as well um as well as Tamar Lich Sheila gun Reed yeah Marty up north was talking about the other two he's saying that the other two are serving two years in jail each which ones got charged today because I know the names now ol Olan and sorry it's uh ol does seem like he's the one who going off to the C those the two that got that that got six years plus carbert got six and a half years yeah so he got longer maybe I don't know why exactly but anyways let's get into this maybe we'll get some more details on this um find out more about the mainstream narrative on this story yeah at least like what they're saying I haven't even seen yeah well I would like to know like basically I got a video from CBC Global and CTV just to see what the establishment narrative and evidence is they were only charged with mischiefs all their charges dropped but these they were no but I think only two were but the other two were charged with conspiracy to murder RCMP or something like it was pretty crazy like pretty CRA they're like they're being charged with conspiracy to murder or to kill uh not only people but officers like RCMP RCMP officers but that could be a thing of just like maybe they're saying oh you implied that by saying you wanted a revolution or something right I don't know like I don't know how in detail that went right and I'm hoping we can get some more information well he said he was willing to die for it if the police got willing to die for it violent with them really yeah but he could have been just bragging to these female police officers I don't know if he actually would gone through it yeah maybe he was just all tall but still you're not allowed to do that you can't go around bragging that you're going to shoot the cops yeah no for sure tonight in Alberta well doesn't go very well for people that and were sentenced today to 6 and a half years for their role in the Coots border blade it was one of several across the country to protest covid-19 rules and vaccine mandates back in 2022 all right for more on the trial and sentencing where he reached Jeremy Newton he's a criminal defense lawyer joining us from Calgary Jeremy thanks a lot for giving us your time today we really appreciate it of course Angie thanks for having me give me a sense your assessment of this sentencing and of course what these two men were charged with well the sentences are obviously quite significant uh I mean they were charged with on the face of it and obviously the conspiracy to commit murder charges very serious one they weren't convicted of that but even the charges that were left you look at them and say these charges on their own don't seem particularly serious but with these circumstances uh the blockade of the border the cash weapons that were found obviously very serious charges in the end the Justice felt they were so and handed out sentences that I think will cause most people to do a double take very significant amounts of time in jail for these two individuals yeah this case as many have talked about it being precedent setting in terms of what we could expect in the future or perhaps as you say uh lay the land if you will for the for future demonstrations or whatnot of of of whatever nature I want to come back to the um conspiracy to murder police officers um walk me through that they were not found guilty of it my understanding is the crown may be looking to appeal the decision but walk us through that that clearly of course was the you know the more serious of of the other charges I agree I understand the crown may have already fought their Appeal on that it is certainly the most serious of the charge and I think the Justice commented if they had been convicted of that they would have been looking at a double digit term of imprisonment they were obviously acquitted by the jury of that count all that really means is that at least one person on the jury felt there wasn't enough to convict them Beyond a reasonable doubt it's an incredibly high standard and knowing the evidence in this case obviously observing it from the outside there had to be some inferences that the crown would have asked the jury to make it's not as simple as we had someone saying I'm going to go out and kill this police officer let's do that they had to defer from text messages from interviews um from the presence of the weapons that that was their intention that is a very high standard the crown had to meet um and it's I wouldn't say it's it's unsurprising but uh Beyond a reasonable doubt it's an incredible standard and so um we see cases that may seem strong from me outside results in aitt all the time and juries don't have to give reasons all we know is they said yes or no here they said no right they said no um but I mean even when we look at the details of this case we look at the details of the charges as well coming down now to 6 and a half years for both for each of these men uh they've now of course time served so they've been in in in jail uh my understanding is since 2022 um or earlier than that so of course they're going to be serving about 2 and a half or so years more um is that too much do you think I mean we kind of look at the level of I guess charges here but then on the flip side when you look exactly what happened over the course of several days here during the pandemic um many would say this is unprecedented we've never experienced times like this before and and they're right I I I don't think there's anything in recent memory or even distant memory that that compares to what uh what we're dealing with here the as the judge said these sentences are aimed to denounce and deter other people who might consider engaging in similar Behavior the sentences are incredibly WR it's hard to say uh charene in the chat like me like like to me I look at the Cs 4 as a separate situation from the freedom Convoy like I feel like the freedom Convoy was one of the most impressive protests in our time and Canadian history ever and I think that regardless how people feel about that we have to respect that so many Canadians gathered together and like most people that were there like I remember watching footage of it when it was first happening and it was like watch this old guy I don't know if everyone saw him but he was it was a bit older man and he was marching in front of uh the House of Commons like Parliament with holding a big Canadian flag just marching back and forth uh and just shouting his he how unhappy he was he said you know what he said Mr Trudeau needs to come down here so we can tell him what we think and like you know this is that's what I think this protest was built on was people like that guy who just wanted to yell at Trudeau it's basically all they wanted right and Trudeau basically just ignored them and continued to push these mandates that regardless how you feel about that as well you got to realize that it it was a huge infringement on our rights to do that and to create this multi-tiered Society of people who got their little checkpoint and people who didn't you know how many people are check mark charlies's and how many people just you know didn't want to give into that right I'm just saying this is my how I feel about it like I was know you know it's the principle behind it is all I'm saying but I just don't to me the cous 4 is a separate situation and it's starting to not look very good for them um especially with the evidence being presented yeah but all I was going to say is just that how you feel about how the government like the government mandates and stuff ultimately just falls on whether or not you believe it was justified or not like if that decision was a good decision at the time and I'm not I personally obviously like I don't I don't think that they knew knew any better I think that there was an overreaction by government probably but there was also I think you actually said this to me first but the I liked the point you said where it was like an overreaction by government and then an overreaction from the public to the government policy so you had like this kind of like and you know I've brought this up before as an example of something I think that this was a really really poor example of leadership by Trudeau I think that he should have came out and talked to them um I've brought it up before as an example of just something that made me kind of respect him a lot less because even if he went out there and got bered going out there and talking to the people is it makes you look like a leader who actually cares about their concerns at the very least even if you're being dismissive about it if you go out there and you take them seriously it's just a little bit better than doing nothing you know hiding saying you have Co and going yeah instead of calling villainizing them and calling them crazy and pumping your hand like I don't know what the hell was anybody that supports it like call If You Think You're Gonna you're not gonna get on a plane you're not gonna get on a that whole speech dude like that was scary to me that was insane I remember thinking like who did we elect as a leader like this guy seems like a full-on dictator to me like that's where that was my first time seeing Trudeau in that light and since then it's been now I've slowly started just to see him as an idiot and I just think he's self-righteous really what it is he thinks he's uh he's so incompetent it's ridiculous his whole administration's incompetent it it's just it's just absolutely ridiculous but anyways um six feet is yeah yeah cryptomeria that's actually a really good point I've heard stuff like that I think what they were doing is a lot of those measures were put in place to because it was right after all the BL protests all that stuff so I think a lot of those measures they were trying to put in place to control the public more than they were trying to keep you safe you know and I definitely think that when it comes down to stuff like social distancing stuff that was just basically I think both of those things kind of go in tandem rid something like that though right like like the thing that you need to think ask yourself is if it was a lot worse like if it was something that had more visibly killed more people or or whatever like instead of 2% of the population or whatever it was it was 15 or 20% right like if it was something crazy like that would it be justified to take these measures yeah I don't you know like at what point would it I think the fatality rate have to be much higher I think I think the fatality rate would have had to have been much higher uh to even consider it I think you know if we had something like an Ebola breakout I think my tune would have been a lot different friend I would have been like yeah whatever put whatever you got in me I don't care right there I don't care this is like a 25% lethality rate I think whatever you're going to give me is way safer than that but I think when it comes down to this like it was a different thing it was like to me the risk it just seemed yeah anyways I don't want to get too into this on on YouTube I don't know I don't even know if we're allowed to talk about this on YouTube anymore or yet but yeah um yeah exactly needing papers to go places needing a little app on your phone that to me is what uh the introduction of cdc's is is going to help encourage and facilitate and that to me is kind of my fear of someone like Mark Carney um you know if he was to actually somehow by Miracle run for prime minister I'm not as worried about him advising Trudeau because people just are so sick of Trudeau I don't think even if he had the best PR team the best advis I just I just don't think it's gonna work still I think he's kind of done I could help him okay okay let's get back to this they were too long or too short because as you said they are literally unprecedented they are without a case to say well it was just like this case they are new they are precedent setting and I'm sure if there's ever anything like this again they will look to this exact case to to these two individuals in Lethbridge and say well this is what they got and we ought to shape our sentence accordingly I'm sure many people will say it was too light many people will say it was uh it was a travesty of Justice from the beginning and I don't think the sentences change anyone's position here I'm sure whatever you felt going in you're feeling coming in I I think so and I think it really speaks to the conflicting views that s have surrounded this case and what led up to all of this um right from the start here um and as we talked about this could be precedent setting and and this will be something that they'll be looking to in the future if something like this were to unfold what do you anticipate other reactions could be on this we saw how polarized the situation was how much it has become we've seen the division between opinions that we saw over the course of of the pandemic during that time in January I think they got a they're only going to be in for another two and a half years they got a six and a half one of them got two six and a half sentences that he's serving concurrently and he got four years credit for the two years he already served so he's getting two years off of an already I mean and a conspir murder police officers I know nothing happened but there's still some like glaring depending on whether or not you agree with these people you're going to have a lot different of op opinion right yeah but I'm just saying that there was also like uh I think things we shouldn't dismiss is I think it was Pat King his story and he went on I think Viva fry and was talking about it and uh I I listened to the whole thing because I was curious I had these guys weren't really getting platformed by anyone else right uh and this was the only guy this Canadian Living in Florida plat uh you know allowed him to come on the show and I I basically listen to the whole thing and I was like that's wild like they were kept in solitary confinement like they were treated horribly they were treated like domestic terrorists right and I think that's something people need to remember and maybe that was deemed unjustified after they dove into it they realized maybe this guy was a lot more talk and maybe they were just more preparing because they were scared maybe they weren't play I don't know either way I think they do deserve to be you know the people who brought in the weapons illegally the people who had any intention of violence that wasn't self-defense I think they should be charged I think that's just that's just how it works like you can't go and be aggressive towards your nation's government in that sense or towards Law and Order and not expect some kind of repercussions especially if there isn't Some Kind of Revolution while you're doing that right um I don't know I just look at this as pretty crazy I I definitely think uh we need to separate them from the rest of the freedom Convoy and I really did not like how the mainstream media and other establishments try to blend them together and use this story to muddy the whole protest because that is not fair there was that is what I am very against and I think people need to realize that I think that there's something there too with condemning the more violent parts of it the thing is that's hard is you know it's the same thing with the January 6 stuff where if you believe that it actually happened like if you really did think the election was stolen or you really do think that Justin Trudeau is about to implement communism or whatever uh there could be argument for violently resisting that right but what part you can't just act violent or prepare to do terrorist terrorism basically based on something that didn't even end up actually happening right and I I never thought it was happening I know there was people who were getting alarmed but I mean like I think that we have this online media sphere that kind of inflames people's uh already existing anxiety and then they're convinced that this is actually happening right and if you're a person who would want to defend the country in a circumstance like that it makes sense that you would start Gathering guns and stuff right but at the same time like it's like what if you think uh everybody who's taller than you is actually an alien and something super crazy like that that doesn't justify you stockpiling guns and going out to try and kill those people right these are the details so so this is what I understand of the situation so in April in April 2024 three men oh wait no no no that's separate that's separate situation so from what I understand I have all the arrests on a timeline is that they were arrested on mischief and then they basically unfolded all this and they were already had an ongoing investigation into them but they used the mischief and saying they were leaders of the protest as reasons to arrest them while the defense areu ues that and there's people at the protest argues they weren't faces of the protest I remember hearing someone talk about them and say these people just showed up and they were very aggressive and that some people didn't really want anything to do with them but they just started acting like they were in charge and a lot of people started following following like following what they were saying that's what I got from it and and what it is but like in within the trial like all those details have been made public it just seems like they were found with a bunch of guns they were to you know to too female RCMP officers baited all this information out of them you say that they were honey pooted whatever they show you know they doesn't matter if they're honey Potter they show they shouldn't have been doing that stuff but uh you know I they were initially charged with intent to they're not just charged with Mischief though they're charged with conspiracy to murder an RCMP officer they were charged with that that's a crazy charge so like that's what I'm saying is like if this is some kind of like how like what do you mean that they weren't charged with that are you talking like cuz like the original arrests they weren't but they weren't I think the original arrest even they were charged with intent to murder they did not do anything so then who brought in all the weapons this one here sir we can go back to the video too I don't know if it's yeah we should we're in rest in February yeah I don't know it like they were charged with stuff right off the bat I didn't see the RCMP things in the initial news about it but uh that is ultimately what they got charged with right uh when essentially you know areas across the country were stronghold what do you think reaction is going to be like or at Le Char of Mischief why would those people not want to Echo that well I'm sure as I said what whatever your opinion was about these individuals and their movement before I'm sure you still feel the same way what what I notices you know there hasn't been anything like this since but it's not like the dialogue and in the public division has has died down at all if anything it's the volume's probably gotten louder the divisions have probably gotten more Stark um I don't think anyone's going to see this and feel Vindicated and feel like they ought to go do something similar but given the level of discourse now the the protests we see even at the the rest stops on the Trans Canada outside of Calgary here in here in Alberta um and protest we across the country it's not unfathomable that you could see an incident like this again and so uh it is truly remarkable it is it is it's unprecedented and it's hard to Fathom where we go from here because it's not like things have any anym uh any more light or any more uh calm in the last two and a half years have they yeah as you say uh we are certainly still in unprecedented times jar we really appreciate you giving us correct it's saying that carber and ol were convicted of public Mischief over $5,000 and possessing a firearm with dangerous intent or dangerous to the public peace so I guess that means it was uh oh sorry dangerous to public peace not dangerous intent o Nick was also convicted of possessing a pipe bomb so I guess that's why those are the two sentences for those two the other ones are awaiting trial but they are being charged they have not yet been convicted but they are being charged with conspiracy to murder an RCMP officer the other two from what I criminal defense La let get through these we probably going to get all these answers through these yeah thank you again for this of course Angie thanks for having me it was an audible reaction in an already tense Lethbridge courtroom gasps could be heard as Justice David lebrin delivered the fate of Chris carbert and Anthony Olen both men were convicted of mischief and possession of a firearm dangerous to the public pieace and Olen was also found guilty of possession of a pipe bomb last month the jury found the men not guilty of conspiracy to murder police officers at the Cs blockade while Crown pushed for the two men to serve 9-year sentences defense had urged the judge to sentence carbert and ol to time already served there's General deterrence which is basically setting an example for the general public and effectively what I took from the judge's reasons is that the sentence was so high in order to send a message to the public you can't do this it was not just about Mr carber as you would know I do believe that this was a political that cly came both lawyers say they plan to appeal the conviction and the sentence marov van hugen boss who helped lead and coordinate the Cs blockade believes the sentencing is politically fueled it's not about the weapons it's not about an explosive found 200 mil away on a farm well every Farm has explosives in that context it's about what we were involved in and that we were involved in something that stood up against government and they want to make an example to anybody else who would dare to challenge government going forward Justice lebrin gave nearly four years credit to the pair for the time they've already spent in custody Jordan Apprentice Global News in Alberta two men were sentenced today to do you have anything to say on that or you want just keep going just keep going I want to get more information on this years for their do you have anything like in ter this because I'm being challenged here by flips like am I am I wrong here so like when I understand only two of them have been charged so were the other two let go isn't there four of them isn't the Cs four it is the Coots four uh I think they all got charged with different stuff when they say that they were let off of charge of charges to murder the police I think it would have been they just got charged with murderers intent like I said I started going through everything that was there before uh the conviction today I haven't watched really anything on like the sentencing that came out just today and I didn't really know all the characters involved like now I know who everybody is lysac is the guy they called a sniper uh Chris carbet I think Jerry Moren and Anthony olick were the ones who got the weapons Rebel news is wrong on a lot of stuff like I like Rebel news I like some of them but they're not right on everything so I take them with a grain of salt especially some of them and dude like there's I Adit at the beginning of this stream we didn't really know like we're just getting into this we're figuring this out with you guys as we go through it all you know we have edited content and other stuff that we'll be doing we do actual deep Dives and fullon research but we we right now we're just trying to kind of comb through it and get all the details and we're hoping that you as a chat and engage with us and provide us some information as well which you've been doing and we're taking that into consideration it was one of several across the country to protest covid rules and vaccine mandates in 2022 cbc's Aaron Collins is outside the courthouse in Alberta and he joins us with more on the sentencing so uh Aaron take us through the details right well this I mean to take you through the details of today you almost have to kind of go back in time a little bit right you got to go back to to the dark cold days of February in 2022 when the Border just south of here was blocked off for two whole weeks in that protest that of course was all wrapped up in those uh covid restrictions that was taking over Parliament Hill as well so these gentlemen were arrested way back then with a giant cach of weapons they had bulletproof vests and they had a large uh amount of ammunition there and they were initially charged with conspiring to murder RCMP officers in addition to that charged with having these weapons and for a dangerous purpose and for Mischief for Dr for for blocking off that border now they uh were not convicted of the most serious charge which was conspiring to kill those police officers but they were convicted of those mischief charges and of having these dangerous weapons for a dangerous purpose so what happened today they were handed down the sentence of 6 and A2 years for those two remaining charges and uh you have to sort of remember that these charges were a large part of the justification the federal government used for deploying the emergencies act which was able to sort of clear those protests out and allow the country to kind of move on supporters of these gentlemen who received that stiff sentence today they were upset they think this is politically motivated have a listen to what they had to say there's a lot of uh shock in this uh in this courtroom in the hallway in the courtyard it was a political protest during unprecedented times and none of that unfortunately has made its way into the court and I feel that this is a travesty of our justice system and I feel that what happened here today is sets a very very dangerous precedence for proceedings in Canada moving forward so that's Marco van hugen boss one of the organizers of the blockade uh not connected in any way to these gentlemen that had the cash of weapons but one of the organizers in interestingly he'll be facing mischief charges for his role in that that was Reb news tweeting about it so maybe I misread the Tweet cuz my dyslexia or whatever but the Tweet literally said Sheila gun Reed press play I'll find it okay later this month so Erin what are the lawyers for the two men who were sentenc saying yeah well they're not happy if you do the napkin math here the six and a half year sentence minus time served these folks are still going to be going back to prison for uh for another two and a half plus years and uh they aren't happy about that they think it's uh the judge said that it was being used as a deterrent to stop other people from taking the Law into their own hands uh and uh they think it's excessive have a listen I was surprised is excessive based on the case law it indicates a level of violence that I would not see in the case law I do believe that this was a political uh prosecution and that certainly came through in the sentence and Jacqueline the lawyers for both Anthony olenic and Chris carber say they are going to be appealing these sentences that were handed down today as well as the charge the conviction uh for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose okay Ain thanks so much for the details on this at cbc's Aaron Collins in Lethbridge Alberta so yeah I guess CBC agreed with you their flips uh no but yeah like we're we're kind of unfolding this as we go right it's like we're watching a lot of this stuff for the first time with you guys uh that's kind of like what the stream is is for and then we also do edited content that's more of like we're developing that's going to be more concise to the point uh research stuff as well some breaking news up yeah like all I read was that they were initially charged with the murder thing I didn't even know the conspiracy murder the police off all like a lot of that's like CBC and like it is like the mainstream media Outlets putting that in people's minds I guess because that was part of the case apparently um I I guess they're just saying it's implied because they were having some kind of revolution in mind or something charged with doesn't mean convicted with either what I can't get past is if they're just political prisoners why the cash of weapons like that would have had been pled for them to be political prisoners I feel that would have had to been planted in some way cuz that's that's one thing that seems a little bit it was all on his property but they were getting guns delivered to the border right and they were blocking the traffic going to and from the United States uh which is a crime in itself out of Alberta a judge has senten two men convicted for their roles in a border blockade at the border between Alberta and the US during the covid-19 uh pandemic protest that went on known as the freedom Convoy the two men have been sentenced to 6 and a half years in prison in August Anthony olenick and Chris carber were convicted of public mischief and possessing a firearm enck was also convicted of possessing a pipe bomb a jury found them not guilty on the charge of conspiracy to murder police officers but again the two protesters in CS Alberta who helped to block that border crossing during the whole freedom Convoy protests have been sentenced now to 6 and a half years two times Central Bank governor and long accused sorry yeah we're getting on to the next story now so they were accused of conspiracy to murder and they were found not guilty of that okay so I definitely think that that that's wild then they were treated the way they were because yeah like if if Pat King's testimony is is is true then he spent like 6 months in solitary his leg he's got like a prosthetic leg was all messed up you know what I mean like it's just it is very hard to convict people in Canadian Court though like I mean we've talked about this before right because they were I mean they had the weapons they stated openly that they would violently resist the police they had pipe bombs they were getting guns delivered to the thing they had they had body armor right like it's not like they didn't have any intent to do anything they were prepared to fight back if they were violently that would have had to been some kind of plant and some kind of framing for them for this to make sense so if you have a pew at home get charge for no no no like Charlene I think more what we're talking about is like it's the body armor it's the it's the full-on Arsenal all together in one 36,000 rounds of Amun ammunition why do you need body armor for just hanging out at home like maybe paintballing maybe I don't know like it's like that to me it's like yeah maybe if you have it sure to me I could see him as being like a preer it's like you're not allow I think you're allowed to have it it's just when you're at a protest you're bragging to undercover police officers that you're going to violently res have all that stuff with them like did he have all that with him or they getting guns delivered to it no they had it at his house so that was just his home stock the 36,000 rounds of ammunition yeah yeah so like he could just be someone who's prepared you know what I mean like and I don't think there's any log yeah which is why he only he only ultimately got four and a half years in jail right for mischief like gun bring guns to a protest with violent he brought all that so did did he bring that whole arsenal to the protest no okay that's I think that's what I was saying is he was right that the weapons weren't on the at the border okay they did get they got a package delivered that was they didn't have any gun I I don't think you're right that there was no guns there at alled informed by the RCMP pots yeah like I I mean if the police are lying then I guess you could say that it's all fake right well I'm saying I think these people would be political prisoners there would have to be some corruption in the justice system for that to apply and I'm open to that I don't think that's impossible yeah so realize these people were demonized so quickly I remember everyone was saying oh they look they're waving Nazi flags at the stat it's like they were they were trying so hard to make this protest look bad and discredit it and Trudeau's Administration was probably overreaching and more authorative than it ever had been during that time that was people like this are the reason they were even able to do the emergencies act though right yeah but that's why it's convenient to have people like this right it's convenient I guess but I mean that's why is the idea that these people are actors while well no not actors like the thing is is like it it comes down to like okay if he brought that full arsenal with him then I could see how you could accuse them of those charges and give them a Mischief over 5,000 and they they got charged with bringing the weapons so that's what I'm saying if he had that Arsenal in the back of his truck that's a different story that if that's just his home stockpile if that's his home stockpile I think that's his right to have it in case you know what if he's worried about Russia invading or China invading right doesn't have to be worried about the Canadian government like it's just it's just it's I don't know this whole situation is pretty crazy feel a lot of people don't even want to touch it you know like it's just it's uh I want to find out more about it like I follow Rebel news I follow lot of these Outlets that are independent Outlets like true north and stuff too and from what i' had been seeing on this I completely thought these guys were political prisoners as well and it wasn't until these convictions that I I guess misread the first time but at the same time we got to the we we got to the meat and potatoes at this point the biggest factor for me is were the weapons at the protest if not if the only weapons they're being charged with with their alleged weapons that were to be delivered I think that's an entirely different story well the other two guys Jerry Moren uh pleaded guilty conspiracy to traffic firearms and Christopher lysac pleaded guilty to possession of a loaded restricted firearm in an in an unauthorized place so that was at the border so it was because they were they were moving guns around they didn't get charged with anything because it's not like they attacked the police officers right well that's what and that's what I was saying too is that there was kind of more investigation happening was like they were trying to say this is going to be like Canada's j6 like that's what they were selling it as to me and the way that and that that's what I saw them like hyperbolizing it is kind of like Canada's j6 it's just like everything else in Canada completely different completely different situation completely different situation I think majority of people in the freedom Convoy were just fed up people Fed Up families fed up working say want to change didn't want people whether or not that's why I say it's comparable either whether or not the Mandate would have affected there more Direction j6 you know the fact that that's even H that that mandate even happened is wild and the fact that some provinces just recently lifted their mandates is even crazier like this many years later but anyways I guess let's let's uh let's seg away from the Cs 4 because yeah like we we're we're going to be doing a deep dive on it we want to really get into the I just want to hold do Deep dive on the protests in general and actually look into more into the pat King and Tamaro Lich stuff um but the thing is that all four of these guys did get charged with weapons stuff it's not like they didn't have weapons with them yeah and like I understand Tamara Lich was kind of sucked into this like she went on Jordan Peterson and I I listened to that whole thing and from what it sounds like she just got sucked into it because they needed somebody to take charge in collecting funds and that's what she started doing and then uh she didn't apparently got really out of hand so quickly because the amount of donations they received yeah raised all these red flags through uh through everything I don't think she's going to jail she had trial already didn't she uh yeah she was held for a little while that's what I was saying is I haven't looked into her and Pat King that much I know for These Guys these were the ones that I always thought were the worst people in the thing they were ultimately what Justified them even bringing in the emergencies act to begin with right like this is what it was used as evidence really the for see that makes it even more convenient for this to be some kind of framing job you know what I mean like that's what I mean it's like to me it's like if there was ever going to be corruption this is where you'd see it I feel like well this is this would be cooperation against the cbsa the RCMP the federal government the provincial government would have all had to cooperate it Jason Kenny was the premier of Alberta at the time they were the ones that were requesting federal assistance yeah taking border down border crossing I think everybody agrees JT should have talk to them and not treated them like a bunch of terrorists like that was the worst thing he could have done and not to mention I think it made I think it fueled people even more to bring that protest further and I think if it wasn't for the way he was demonizing it I don't think people would have flocked to it the way they did I think in in in on the bright side of JT being you know not acknowledging it I think it gave a lot of fuel to that fire and allowed it to become what it did and Inspire worldwide protests you know and let's not forget about that that it inspired the farming Pro like like you know the farming protests in Europe like all that stuff like it it it wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for that so I think that we need to keep that in mind it's just the biggest thing is is the the the Cs 4 to me is a separate situation and we are going to be doing more of a deep dive into it finding all the facts that we can and we're going to be looking everywhere like Rebel news like I'm not going to let Sol leave no Rebel news ston unturned like we're going to be going into this making sure we get all anecdotal who's saying it who's saying what try and give all the information and let you guys decide what to think you know let you guys figure out what you think the answer is based off the facts and or based off the evidence uh provided it is always surprising to me how things like this don't usually get a lot of deep Dives and when they do they're like extremely biased in One Direction right like that's the thing like we can talk about watching Rebel news and true north and stuff to get better information on this but realistically like these are going to be the most sympathetic Outlets you could possibly find like it'd be finding like a communist news organization who's covering free Palestine prot no well well no no that's why I thought it was good to go with CTV CBC and Global because they're the mainstream News Network in Canada so I think like hearing what they say like CTV tends to be a little more conservative leaning at times however they all are still part of the establishment don't get me wrong but there are certain people I will go to for to hear their side of the story because you need to know what every is saying regardless if you agree with it or not CU a lot of the time when I read this stuff it's because my dad sent me something from Rebel news so I'll start with the rebel news article and then I'll Branch out and have to read a bunch more other stuff but I like I said the other the other guys I remember reading about them way back and I remember when these guys were first initially being charged with the attempts to kill the police officers and uh I said at the time I was like I don't know I mean it looks like they had weapons they had some kind of violent intent at the least I don't know if they'll get convicted uh on the full charges but they'll probably get charged with something like even when you told me I didn't even know about this until you let me know over the phone and I was saying oh like I'm surprised I wasn't even sure if they were really going to get charged uh just because it's been two years a lot of the time in Canada too you can argue that because it took so long that you're not getting a fair trial right there's a lot of protections for people in Canada uh it's pretty hard I I think of all the court systems to be like corrupt and like taking down political prisoners and stuff the Canadian one would be the like these guys might even be able to challenge challenge the conviction and uh get it overturned I wouldn't be surprised if they did it yeah and freezing bank accounts that was that is insane and I I think honestly how they handled it how Freeland like what Freeland did it was a career Ender I don't think she's ever going to have a position in government again after this and if she does it's going to be a very small position I don't think the Liberals will ever have or this Liberal Party will ever have the same hold on Canada it once did because of those decisions they made with the emergencies act because they didn't just stop at diffusing this they went off they used it as a tool to go after the entire protest so that's what's so crazy about it but anyways I think we've talked about this topic enough uh let's get on to uh the basically destroying Al them ah whatever who cares it is what it is truth needs to be out there regardless of who wants to hear it um okay this is going to be on the mark Carney stuff right this is a mixture of stuff so this is this is going to be uh power play with Mark Holland okay so I thought it was interesting it' be good to watch sounds good on a new role with the Liberal Party of Canada after a summer of speculation over whether he'd replace chrisa Freeland as Finance Minister announced today Carney will chair the 's task force on economic growth a move that comes as he set to address the Gathering liberal caucus in Nimo British Columbia it's the first time liberal MPS have huddled together since the surprise and significant loss of their long held Toronto St Paul seat back in June earlier today I spoke with Health Minister Mark Holland just before he left Toronto for that meeting hi Minister good to see you as always thanks for making time for the show you bad fashion I have a number of questions related to your portfolio and most particularly dental care but I did want to start off asking about where I know you're headed caucus over Ino uh BC one of your colleagues Julie dtz told CTV this weekend quote we're worried worried pardon me given the end of the deal with the NDP given the resignation of your campaign director and given public opinion polls are you worried no uh no I'm not I think that uh my focus is on uh The Business of Being uh cada's Health Minister and I think our government is focused on the same thing uh which is making sure that we help people and that we're focused on governing uh look things go up things go down uh I think for me I you know was there in 04 06 08 11 15 Etc so forth this will be my e8th federal election uh you learn to not get too invested in these ups and downs you stay focused on what you were elected to do uh and we were elected to uh serve Canadians and get things done things like dental care pharmacare so that's what my focus is uh and I don't for sort of focus on the these up and down mations I think if I were asking you this a year ago I I would totally understand where you're coming from there was not a persistently wide gap between your party and the Tories it was not as sustained not nearly as sustained as it has been over the last eight months my guess is that's what's informing mtz's comments right about her worry is that this isn't the the normal up and down it's been like that for a while and it also leads me to wonder or sort of assume that Canadians even though you're governing don't feel that that governing is effective is that fair well no I I think think look these are difficult times uh I can tell you as I go around the country or as I did events in my riding um that people are concerned about the state of the world uh they're very it's very heavy times uh and so uh it's understandable that there's a lot of frustrations there uh and what Mr PV has done is is leaned into that pressed into the pain made people feel more uncomfortable uh and he's good at that uh but that's not uh choosing the direction for a country that's not choosing the kind of country we want to have and I think when people take a look at it who would Canada trade its place with uh Canada is is in a very difficult Global time doing very well uh and we have to have a really important conversation about the choice that's in front of us uh right now Canadians haven't been focused on a choice they've been focused on frustrations with the world r large and understandably frustrations about the challenges that are here at home but when those get focused into a conversation about what kind of government you want to have what kind of policies you want to have what kind of folks do you want uh Focus on what kind of issues uh that's one where I feel very comfortable and in the conversations that I've been having with people uh very easy to get to a place where um uh where I see uh our way to being able to get support but I mean I I I think the focus again is in the wrong place if you're focused on polls um then you're missing the the fact that you have an opportunity to be getting things done and to govern and that's what my focus has been certainly as health Minister we've got some very big things to get done things that I'm sure we're going to be talking about in a moment well yeah yes we will and I have questions about that just one more question on this because I do take your point about um you know focusing in as the conservatives have done on those frustrations but I'm not sure it's as simple as saying it's just frustrations with the way of the world right now or the state of the world as you put it the Canadians I speak with are very frustrated with their own lot in life their own challenges that they face the affordability crisis that they have endured for the last two years don't these polls show something different than you're intimating don't they show that people though you you say you are governing don't feel that that governing has led to better conclusions for their life and shouldn't you take something from that and provide them maybe with a different agenda a a bigger agenda more change rather than what you and your colleagues keep telling us which is you will continue doing what you're doing well look I think in the first order I acknowledge fully that the times we're living in globally are very difficult they're probably the most difficult times since the Second World War um but uh in that uh we have to look at what real solutions are rooted in data and Science and evidence and uh you know and and I think when you take a look at the conservatives as an example they've offered no policies no ideas all we know is they're going to cut uh and cut tremendously across the board um but that doesn't absolve your government from questions about what you're doing absolutely I agree I would but take a look bashy take a look at how Canada's doing take a look at what Canada's doing in terms of job job creation in terms of our unemploy in terms of our it it is you take look at it's still very no but but if you take a look at how we're doing versus the rest of the world across a myriad of economic indicators Canada is doing exceptionally well now that's in very difficult Global times uh you know you could take inflation Canada is got one of the lowest inflation rates and I believe it is the lowest in the G7 one of the lowest in the G20 and Below all the averages of the G20 and oecd countries so we're doing very well across a number of metrics but the question here is look it's very easy I've been around this business a long time I was in opposition going around and hammering the government and saying everything that's wrong in the world is very easy and you can get a lot of points for it here's the problem you're going to have to come and have a conversation about Solutions how are you making things better and I would say to you that whether or not it's on housing whether or not it's on affordability whether or not it's on Healthcare uh that we have concrete plans that we're working through and I think that you have to stick to the business of getting things done and delivering results I think trying to find magic wands or trying to you know herk or jerk here or there to try to uh to try to change the narrative isn't the way to do it the way to do it is to get results the way to do it is to do things like what we're doing with dental care 650,000 people getting care over 80% of dentists now are uh participating in the program making sure that we make pharmacare happen that we get diabetes medication to people so these are the practi IAL things that I'm focused on I'm very comfortable having a conversation in 6 months a year time about how what we've done and are doing is different than just the anger and noise that has come from the the opposition that isn't a plan that is that is the political strategy but it's not a plan for Country I understand that and and I'm not absolving the opposition of answering those questions in fact I asked them o over and over and over again largely to know Avail but I also don't think that absolves your government from questions about the things that you are saying you're delivering on that polling and anecdotally Canadians tell me they don't feel you're delivering on on on dental care I'm not sure that's one of those by the way because you're right the numbers of the number of Canadians who have accessed the program are quite High I wanted to ask about the program going forward and what's Les left to unfold because so much of this was done in partnership with the NDP can you say for the record without their partnership on this now that the deal the formality of the agreement is over is your government going to follow through on it till the very end 100% look this was a shared priority uh I was house leader when this government was formed and we talked about shared priorities and getting things done Dental Care uh has been something that we've been focused on and lifting and getting done uh you know I've been traveling and so of my colleagues in every corner of this country meeting with dental providers and dentists excuse me denturists and hygienists getting people signed up that's why we have more than 80% of oral health professionals including 80% of dentists across the country that have signed up and now we see 2.4 million Canadians have signed up and these are real stories people getting care in a transformative way it's going to have a huge impact on our health system I take a look at what we're going to be doing uh in pharmacare 100% I continue to have conversations with my provincial and territorial colleagues about getting the job done there or about school food about making sure that our kids have healthy meals that has huge implications for our health system as well so on the health side of things look the NP was a parliamentary partner um they voted for some of these things but in terms of implementation that heavy lifting is been our job and it continues to be our job and we're going to continue to get it done you mentioned pharmacare still before the Senate is your government not proring Parliament so that whatever legislatively has to get through it still does you know we have uh the pharmacare legislation in the Senate I'm very uh much looking forward to being adopted there um I'm not the house leader anymore so I don't I you'd have to talk to the house leader in terms around the uh the Parliamentary plan but in terms of my plan uh for uh data it's so essential that we have interoperability and common data standards across this country so that we can work with provinces and territories on finally cracking data that's going to save lives safe Long-Term Care Act that's incredibly important for us to move forward with as well as this pharmacare legislation so just in my portfolio in health we have some really critical pieces of legislation I think it's important that we focus on that uh Canadians expect us during in between elections to be focused not on politics but on getting things done for them and that's what we're going to continue to do we have different uh parliamentary uh uh parties that are uh we have shared priorities we're willing to work with whoever it takes to get it done uh but the focus here should be on doing the business of the nation uh not trying to Angle an edge for uh for an election on a timing that uh one particular leader or another thinks benefits them do I interpret from that and I take your point you're not the house leader talking your preference would be not to progue Parliament and I'm asking quite genuinely on behalf of Canadians who depend on the stuff that you've talked about that will depend on the programs making their way through through Parliament who could see all of that put in Jeopardy if your government decides to progue because they're afraid of the threat of an election can you be unequivocal about what you would like to see well you're the only person who's mentioned to me this idea so I don't have a lot of thoughts on it I am not involved in it whatsoever I mean I the only thing I can tell you is what I've got in front of me in the work that I'm doing um and and and that we are making incredible Headway in progress on dental care on pharmacare on Transforming Our Health System system look $200 billion invested over the next 10 years in our health system transforming uh and revolutionizing Primary Care making sure that we have enough doctors and nurses the work that I said we're doing on data so I've got an extremely full plate that's what I wake up and focus my attention on and I think that's what Canadians want me to be focused on making our health system better well I I have nothing to I I don't have any thoughts on it because I've never thought about it I mean you're raising it now you're the first time I've heard it uh but my focus is on the work that I've explained okay I'm going to leave it there Minister I appreciate your time as always thank you ohz thank you we're going to begin today at the liberal that was it as uh I think David Cochran was nicer um was was harder on him oh yeah is this in this one or oh yeah that was just the last one that was one we watched earlier this summer uh this is just basically talking about liberal caucus uh shifts stuff like that going on thought it was definitely worth watching uh it's going to be talking about Mark Carney stuff like that having some analyst on that'll give their two cents caucus Retreat liberal MP Alexander Mendes is in the Namo and she joins me now M Mendes welcome to power and politics good afternoon uh Mr thank you very glad to be here thank you well you heard yourself is this off the top there saying that your constituents a the uh that the problem isn't the party it's the leader um why did you feel it was important to go on the record about this right now well because I'm supposed to convey the messages that constituents give me uh that that isn't the whole conversation obviously because once constituents tell you that um you you go back to them and tell them okay but the government has a significantly improved life for Canadians and it has forward an a Very inclusive and very Progressive agenda so what do you have to say to that and most agree that yes the government has done very well in many aspects particularly I respect that she kept the shades on for the interviewing up our security uh net net our our Social Security net uh but uh but there is this feeling about the Prime Minister that I really can't pinpoint to a single issue but but it seems to be very prevalent so so your constituents and you say they are adamant that this was dozens and dozens and dozens of people not just one or two random people what do you think Miss Mendes do you think for the good of the party for the good of your government he should step down my personal opinion is no he shouldn't because first of all in terms of of uh the process uh this has has come a bit like you know out of nowhere uh but secondly I do think the Prime Minister will history will be kinder to the Prime Minister and what he has put forward as a governing uh um philosophy but but as very concrete po policy too so um I believe that he certainly uh has worked very hard for Canadians uh has worked very hard to improve Canadians lives right we've been faced with very very strong headwinds in many different uh areas uh and I think that's what right now is getting Canadian well my constituents anyway extremely uh ins satisfied dissatisfied rather but but they can't actually pinpoint to a precise or specific issue it's it's a very generalized kind of me or we're tired of his face kind of thing but if it was a specific issue it would be easier to solve if it's just fatigue with the leader it becomes a much more difficult and intractable problem so I know the Prime Minister said he's spending the summer listening to Canadians and he's going to focus on delivering for Canadians but do you think Canadians are willing to listen to him anymore at this point that he can come back from the deficit he finds himself in well that is not the impression I got from my constituents and and when I say I spoke to dozens and dozens of constituents I had two very precise doz moments where I I I heard from more than one or two I had Canada Day my most successful Canada Day event in my years as an MP uh I had over 800 people which in Quebec is a pretty good number um and then 3 days now in August at the end of August in St Lambert where we had a a booth and constituents were just coming by and it was very generalized they are uh unhappy with the Prime Minister but why and when you go and try to get it a little deeper you don't know so does the Prime Minister have an opportunity now in the next session in the next year to bring Canadians back uh I hope so I definitely hope so you don't sound convinced though I mean you sound hopeful but not optimistic right because there is this desire for change Miss Mendes we've seen uh Chiefs of Staff leaving your government the national campaign director has announced that he is leaving uh Sheamus Oran resigned from cabinet Pablo Rodriguez may be resigning to run for the leadership of the provincial uh Liberal Party in Quebec there's a lot of change happening except at the very top so I mean how do you view the situation right now well precisely I mean we don't I don't know how to view the situation other than Through The Eyes of My constituents uh whom are are the people I'm supposed to represent uh they are the ones I'm here well in Ottawa to represent and uh and I do have that feeling that they seem to think it's time for the leadership to change not necessarily the government but the leadership so but but yeah again there has been so much good done that that warrants uh uh uh support from from from Canadians um and I hope to convey that message better perhaps with my constituents uh to make them see how how we have U been there for them but you said earlier today Miss Mendes that you were carrying the message of your constituents to the caucus as you gather into nighto to tell the to tell the party leadership and to tell your colleagues I wonder are other colleagues hearing the same thing from their constituents and have you heard from the party leadership since you made your comments today I no I haven't and I haven't spoken to my colleagues yet we haven't had well I've been Crossing colleagues around around the hotel but I haven't spoken to anyone yet uh properly um so I I'm not going to talk about my colleagues or what they have heard uh but uh from the leadership no I haven't heard anything since uh since this morning do you believe that that it is likely that a considerable number of your colleagues have heard similar things from their constituents you look it's been a tough 14 15 months of polling at this point in time you lost the St Paul's byelection you have another byelection coming up not far from your riding just over on the island in l Mar Veron do you think you can win that seat with the the leader's popularity being where he is right now the party being where it is right now we're very very confident that we'll win that seat we've been working it uh and I mean all of us have contributed in one way or the other well say RI to ensure that uh Miss palestini will win that uh that that by elction um and and again it's going back to presenting cons or voters in this case with the alternative what do you really want to happen do do you think that if you show your dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister now that is not endangering all the gains that we've made through the past eight years eight nine years she's kind of right there you ask that question people start thinking again is said oh maybe yes maybe you're right maybe it's better to stick with the with the liberals so we're hoping that that will translate into an an election Victory uh but it is tight no no no use in denying that it is a tight byelection and uh it it takes all our efforts but you know you circling back to what we talked about you hope that the Prime Minister can convince Canadians with the time he has left to give him another chance if you can't convince the voters of L Salamar Verdon um how do you convince the rest of Canada this is what I wonder so I I mean I I know that's the big inflection point is coming on the 16th of September I mean what are your thoughts there if you don't win that seat what does it mean for the Prime Minister well it's it's a very very negative message for sure if that's what happens that's a very negative message and uh and I guess we'll have another Reckoning once once uh the dust Falls but um we'll uh we'll wait until the 16th and and really continue to work hard to make sure that uh um Miss palestini wins that that constitu so the bottom line is your constituents have told you that they want a change in the leadership of your party you believe Mr Trudeau has earned the right to stay should he choose to do that because of the good work that he's done and you hope that it can change the mind of your constituent so they are telling you loud and clear that you can't win uh if things don't change at the very top because it's not the party it's not the policies it is the prime minister do you think you can win if you don't make a leadership change do you think the Liberals can win the next election if you don't make this [Applause] change I I'm not confident to be very very fair uh I'm not even sure uh that uh that Canadians will be listening to us uh by the point uh where we will be talking at the doors when whenever the campaign happens um but I'm hoping that something does happen that will change their perspective I'm not terribly confident though what about your own seat of brard St lanber um you've won that three elections in a row with at least 50% of the vote each time very different Dynamic going into this next election assuming you're running again based on what your constituents have told you if they don't like your leader and they want that change do you think you can win what should be a safe liberal SE given three not just pluralities in a row but majorities in a row for you well I Liv through 2011 so uh I can't predict how voters will decide to send their messages um but uh but obviously if just if voters are really really fed up they will send a message so I will lose but I'm hoping that the work I've done as a constituent MP will be uh enough for them to uh return me to uh to Ottawa but that's my hope well miss menz just one last question then what you come out of this caucus Retreat that could give you some hope that all these negative outcomes we've been discussing can be avoided what what do you want to see happen in the next couple of days well I I'd like to see a message of uh of a message that the leadership received from from Canadians throughout the summer and that they are ready and willing to put forth um a very positive and very um uh forceful um policy change to to to engage Canadians again and to get Canadians excited about what the government is doing okay that's what I would like to see well uh liberal MP Alexander Mendes I want to thank you for your time I want to thank you for your cander have a good Caucus meeting thank you for joining us today thank you so much thank you former Bank of Canada govern signed on this thanks for this fashy uh no let's just just go she just says the same thing just go past this too it's just GNA be fashy I want to want get to the mark Carney announcement uh Before We R out of time oh yeah I got to go in like 10 minutes yeah it's it's short honour mer V uh thank you all for coming I'll just say a few words and then please to take your questions look and let me start uh by saying it's an honor uh to accept this role as chair of this new task force on economic growth uh for the Prime Minister for the leader it comes at in my view a decisive time for our economy for our country you know the world is becoming a more dangerous and divided place and at the same time the global economy is being transformed every major economy is accelerating their energy transition and being low carbon is becoming a key driver of competitiveness we're just at the start of a revolution driven by AI in every sector every economy every company we can no longer rely on the world's rules-based trading system we have to become an essential trading partner we can't win an industrial policy arms race and in all of that environment we have to grow both in the short term uh and for the long term we need real policies we need Solutions not slogans action not indifference and I was very pleased by the discussion in the room the ideas and the energy uh of the members uh and look forward to working with them I think he's going to run for the next election not this one but the one after uh to develop the strategy and I look forward and I may regret this I'm looking forward to your questions Your Wagon to a party that is really struggling right now why look I well first thing um I I have a couple Simple Rules uh one if uh uh prime minister of Canada asks me to do something uh I will do it I will serve uh to the best uh to the best of my uh ability secondly uh you know I'm interested I have some experience in these issues and I'm interested in helping our country to grow I'm interested in doing something not being something uh and this is a decisive time for our economy these issues have to be tackled headon uh and as I said at the outset I'm I'm I'm honored to be part of this process oh my god dude they need to have a person there who just picks the questions I don't know why they do this look I think that look the the the story for today and the and the task that I've taken on is a it's a big task it's an important task but I'm a catalyst in a much broader uh effort uh effort of uh those members of parliament in that room uh effort of other Canadians look these issues those who really think about uh our future are increasingly seized with these issues and the question is how do you translate those to the best ideas the best policies that are going to make real differences for Canadians [Music] [Music] soci competitive can I ask daylight between you and the Lial party on the you have said you know it had done its purpose up to a time will you be advising them to make any changes on purpose I think the fundamental uh sometimes what happens with these issues around is that the focus misses an important other aspect which is that as I said a moment ago being low carbon is going to be a determinant of whether we can create jobs whether we can sell our products in the United States in Europe around the world we have to help our companies become more competitive there's a huge range of things that the federal government can do many of which they are doing huge range of things that other companies or sorry the provincial governments and other other their stakeholders need to do in order for that to be the case and we need to be cleare eyed about not the challenge but the scale of the opportunity because no country is in a better position for this make one last Point these issues the issues around being low carbon is an issue for our manufacturing sector it's a Miss it's an issue for whether or not we're going to lead in information uh technology it's an issue for whether we are going to retain our ability to trade into the major markets and we are best place of any country in the world to do that but we have to be cleare eyed about it and move forward see like it's not the best but it's so much better than the answers that Trudeau gives dude Trudeau just sucks so bad compared yeah dude he's always just bringing up the stupid Reb wise in terms of public speaking communicating with the public that's what's scary about someone like this running is they could actually but I mean he's he's what he's saying being cleare eyed about it and that like it opens you up to all these markets if you're able to keep your carbon emissions down right because there's other markets that are going to put their own restrictions on who they import from but that's what I mean is like if you're going to try and sell this to the public don't say it's for the planet like it's virtue signal this country of 38 million or 40 million people is going to make what he's saying literally billion is that it's the way the world's going they want to buy products that are low in carbon emissions and that's why we're doing it and it's just it's yeah that's just a way better way to say it whether or not you believe in the what he's talking about or not it's just it's yeah it's just a better way to put it he's a better salesman for sure for sure he the conversation this is the outcome of the conversation I have with the Prime Minister which is I don't like the guy I'm just saying I would be scared wasun is way more inent I'm an outsider well yeah so I was just going to say is car's just seems like a more competent politician uh I'm providing a perspective interested Canadians them in so that we can have the best possible growth strategy that puts people first grows our economy not just in the short term but in the medium long term in a world that is fundamentally changing low carbon is a different product right that's what he's saying he's saying you can sell it as a low carbon product it's like making organic groceries you know it's not like holy crap I'm on oh sorry one [Laughter] sec scared me I think some people sure but like there's definitely a portion of the population that cares about it it's silly to pretend that's not a thing this way so that's the last question answer in English the okay uh the AL seea you think my memory is better than it is uh the uh no the question you but look the what I understand uh my career my so much more charismatic than Trudeau is holy crap if you look at it uh has been in and around the interface between policy and the economy the public and private sector and what's animated throughout has been to get the private sector to work to the objectives of people through uh whether it was when I was doing Financial reform as Governor the Bank of Canada I don't reallyree I just think that I can't deny he's a much better public speaker than Trudeau or at least how Trudeau is lately Trudeau just seems like he's floundering and flailing you see with the angry red shirt guy he's just like well we're delivering on canadi we're we're contributing four billion it's like but what am I seeing like like what am I getting in my hands from you you act like you're doing so much for us but at the end of the day a lot of us don't benefit from all these policies and programs you're putting in we just tend to pay more taxes to pay for it yeah I mean I I'm more in line with this guy than you are for sure but I'm just saying I'm analyzing this from a a political efficacy standpoint like that's the same thing I was doing with uh jug me saying too right just like how does this help you accomplish your agenda and are you doing that in a way that's actually going to work with the public and I think that this type of rhetoric even him saying to the reporter oh you think my memory is better than it is like joking about not remembering what the question was instead of Trudeau who would have been like really awkward be like uh uh and like trying to repeat a you know yeah trude's 15 minute cities would be like 150 minute cities that's why I'm not worried about Trudeau it's like it's just it's never going to happen with him we got to finish because I got to go it's to ensure that we get the private sector to provide what people want what Canadians want that's the issue now that's the issue now in at an even higher level because these huge changes are coming as I said at the outset the world's more divided it's certainly more dangerous we can flip that around and take advantage of it okay last question why do you feel that you can help the party better in this way than presenting yourself as a candidate what matters what matters for Canadians let's be frank it's not a party it's not an individual it's what happens on the ground it's whether the country is moving forward uh to their priorities this is where I can help right now now in order to move our country forward it's look it's an exciting time it is an exciting time for Canada if we seize it and this is about seizing it and I'll finish with this uh I'm I'm pleased and honored not just uh by uh uh the prime minister's conf confidence uh but I look forward to working with Minister Freeland Minister shampang uh minister in and the rest of uh the caucus in developing this to [Music] right so what do you think of that I think that yeah I said kind of shared a lot of my details I knew this was I had a feeling he was going to play some part uh this is basically I guess his role he's going to be playing you know they've been suspect they've known about him meeting with Trudeau for a while now that's why they kept blowing up he was going to run it was going to be Caron tax Carney instead of Trudeau that's why they kept spreading those rumors because they were trying to FL you know show that these guys were working together but I think it makes sense that they would work together I think if he wants to save the Liberals this is unfortunately the best chance they have but I still don't think it's good enough I think they're going to lose very hard against the conservatives um like every other party I think they'll they might see howain opposition but I just don't think because I think a guy like him would be competitive against Pierre yeah like you said it's going to be maybe maybe next term like like maybe Pier Pierre will probably win this election and then maybe the next think I think so but I actually don't know so because now that I'm seeing him kind of be paraded in front of the press and stuff uh I feel like they're testing the water and they're going to see how it goes cuz he's going to have to ultimately make a decision like do I run on this losing campaign or do I wait for the next election and take out Pierre after he's had four years to try and deliver on his promises right he can't run he doesn't have a seat like Mark carne's not part of the House of commments he's just like a consultant right he can't run in one of the empty ridings I don't I don't know I don't think so wouldn't he have to get elected like he'd have to get elected the El so you're saying he could get elected and then scoot into Prime ministership how does that work exactly probably yeah it's like I thought that would have to all be like planned out way before him I don't I don't know how that all works yeah I don't know 150% but I mean if there was a byelection that he was to run in as the liberal candidate they just find a strong writing strong liberal writing where they think he can win and uh I mean yeah that'd be a really good test to see how he does right and if he was ble to win it and they were able to run him instead of turto they might I don't know if he's going to want to do it I think if I was him I would be more inclined to wait another four years but uh yeah I think it's like I think now yeah you''ll be jumping on a sinking ship I think for sure but I don't think it's possible he could save it though because most people have a problem with Trudeau and not the party right not everybody obviously I know I know you and flip liberals altogether but all the Liberals they keep putting up to bat right now like it's just it's ridiculous it's like you guys just making the party look worse and worse and worse there's a certain kind of consensus Trudeau just changed the party right the same thing that that that you argue Trump has done to the Republicans I feel like definitely Trudeau has done to the Liberals and has it worked for Trump and it worked for Trudeau Trudeau got longer out of it but his point now it's become his like number one downfall is this if guys like this were going to take over the liberal party I think they would crush cuz they'd actually be able to talk about qu economic stuff with POV right because right now I'm pretty sure POV could talk circles around judeau like it wouldn't even be a fair fight but this guy seems like he actually he has an air of uh I've honestly thought about just doing a stream of watching old footage of Pierre just riing into Trudeau because there's so much of it in the committee hearings all that I actually really do have to go though I'm really sorry all good we're cutting it soon we had a really small stream today I think we screwed up our algorithm about Co stuff earlier but I'm happy to see all the regulars in chat uh Thanks for liking the stream I'm pretty sure um I'm assuming it's flips in cryptomeria and Charlene doing that we appreciate it uh yeah have a good one guys sorry we couldn't hang around for you longer longer we might be back or no it won't be back tomorrow but uh back maybe later in the day I don't know maybe I I might actually be back solo I haven't been minded up yet but I I'm going to there there's more I wanted to cover we just don't we didn't have time for both of us so I might be doing a stream uh later today but uh no promises but I'm going to keep on reading about the the protest stuff because I want to have like a really I'm going to write out a big huge document about it all I did today basically was got the timeline reading up to their initial arrests and I mean that took me like an hour and a half right um but yeah anyways have a good one guys
