[Music] do for the M it's t by his VI and ideas of let's do s injuries and WIS we can't wait for the next game to begin this is the song to my podast this is the s to the hello welcome to Mike's Mets podcast I'm your host Mike Pisha happy Saturday to you uh we are recapping the Mets 6 to4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night Extra Innings thanks to a mark Vientos walk-off home run uh we are also going to be talking about the Jeff mcneel injury that the news just broke today uh but first let's start off with the uh the big news which was Mark fantos is not the MVP but he may just be the most important guy on that team not named Francisco Lindor and uh fandos uh supplied pretty much all the offense in this game um he was three for five with uh two home runs both home runs were for two run or two run home runs uh and uh as I said before the second home run was the walk off shot uh a towering fly into left field that uh if you saw it you're just like wow this guy has is just built for big moments he is clutch he does everything right and he has done everything that they' have asked him to do uh in what has been and at times tumultous season for Vientos with the uncertainty as to whether or not his spot on the big team was going to be secure or not and uh what we've gotten is uh VI do really coming into his own and easy to forget he's only 24 because he's been kind of bouncing up and down so much over these last couple of Seasons um uh easy to forget he is still a young guy this is a guy who is uh just really starting to break out and become uh a star which I you know I was somebody who I I didn't really see it happening for Vientos I thought he would might be a solid role player guy who had power but uh wasn't a guy who can who could consistently make enough contacts to to be uh considered a valuable everyday player uh that is completely gone out the window he's been the entire year just consistently batting around 280 290 on the year uh if there's a if there's a criticism to make be made about Vientos it's the fact that he strikes out a lot um he strikes out about a third of the time he's got 101 strikeouts less than I think 400 plate appearances this season so he's he's a guy who is pretty much you know you everything or nothing with fento that being said uh he still gets the job done and the fact that he is consistently making contact I mean the way he makes contact is you know is the other thing this is a guy's not really relying on you know swinging singles or uh you know like a you know Loop hits or anything like that he makes strong contact I mean like every time he makes contact with the ball I feel like it's going to be a line drive or it's going to be out of the park and uh he uh that ability to just you know get base hits not easy there aren't players like him that just show up every once in a while like I very few who have his kind of power which is uh very prodigious I mean the way he hits is we haven't seen a guy like that in a met uniform in a long time and uh you wish uh you know there are certain veterans on this team like pet Alonzo and brand demo I wish had uh his instincts for hitting um and part of it is I think Vientos is still just guy who hasn't been seen that much in League um they still have not developed a strategy to pitch to ventos as I mentioned you know very strikeout uh heavy guy uh there there's times I remember when I first saw vantos I I was like this guy like reminds me a little bit of a of a j Carl Stanton just in terms of his stature and size um he's obviously nowhere near Stanton's size but he's a really big guy guy stands very very straight straight and tall at the at the plate and uh the way that he just kind of whips the bat around and and makes contact he's got that uh killer bat speed and just is so smart to play there is a lot of like reminders of like yeah this guy if he can like you know get his arms around one and just like try and just crack one he just goes out of the park immediately he's so strong and uh that walk-off home run was no was no joke no doubt or uh like he hit it Cohen made it made the call immediately I mean he we didn't even see the camera like like pan around to see where exactly the ball was going to land Cohen knew it immediately he was right off the bat he was like yep that's gone and that was it um and it's it's telling that uh the Mets the Mets announce Booth is very much in the in the camp of yeah Vientos and Lindor are probably the most important players on this team it's not Pete Alonzo or JD Martinez or BR Nemo it is Lindor vento show right now and Lindor just you know keeps getting his base hits he continues to maintain that hitting streak uh just continues to to poish that mvp dare I say resume and Vientos just keeps on chugging and the fact that fenos is you know like batting consistently in the in the middle of the lineup between second and sixth uh every game now at this point uh just shows Carlos Mendoza's faith in him he knows that this is a guy who is their dependent on him to kind of stir the drink so to speak and uh he has become in very very short order indispensable which I never would have guessed I I hly I honestly if you go back and check earlier episodes in this season I had no real expectations for Vientos as I said I thought he might be like a DH I thought he might be a guy who could maybe hit like 30 home runs a season but was going to bat like 211 or something like that not the similar to the to the stats that P Alonzo is putting up right now so I I viewed him as like a worst version of like Alonzo and um it's it's become a a surprise I've I've been especially surprised at how well he's played at third base he's not going to win any gold glovs out there but U for a guy as big as he is he moves pretty well over there and it's just I think is natural athleticism that's coming through so uh he has uh become the everyday third baseman there is no plans to you know replace him you know surpass him and at this point you have a guy who's just a young star you you put him first and foremost in your thoughts and you say that guy is going to be you know the future of this team along with Lindor along with uh Francisco Alvarez and especially in the wake of Alvarez's power outage where it's just this guy can't get really get any home runs fantos has become uh is kind of the way he's kind of like slipped into that role it's just been amazing it was a great win last night uh it was a great start from Sha manah we have to talk about manah who again um has become like this like oh yeah like he's just going to get like 9 to 11 strikeouts a start now I don't really know how it happened all of a sudden it's it was like okay yeah man is just going to keep striking out everybody and he's become this surprise star that again I don't think any lot people were expecting that to happen but uh manah is uh become the deao ace um in in the wake of a koda's injury so they've been relying on manah to be that star he was pitching terrific through the through the first uh six innings game then then got into a little bit of trouble in the seventh and then unfortunately gave up that two- run home run in during that inning and had they had to pull him uh but it was it was a wonderful start that he was having just made really kind of one major mistake and it and uh it costed them so it was great start from Mani again uh good job for the Met Bullpen uh this was a great performance from Reed Garrett who came in pitched an inning a third squirrels relief no walks thank God and uh strike out three uh leading off to Edwin Diaz Diaz has been killing as of L the last five appearances he's uh scoreless scoreless appearances he struck out 12 uh batters during that time uh struck out three uh last night uh so struck out the side during that uh ninth inning uh where he was dueling with his brother Alexis Diaz in the ninth inning went to Extra Innings uh Jose budo took over budo uh you could tell um with I think with the increased workload that budo has been seeing he''s been getting a pitcher who is not quite as uh polisher and uh because of that he's because he hasn't had quite as much time in between uh relief appearances as he did in the past where he would do like two or three Innings at a time and then he wouldn't see him for like five games um you now we're seeing budo at a much more um consistent schedule now the these developed into the uh regular setup man seven fitting guy so you're seeing more and more budo and because of that I think budo is starting is having a little trouble adapting to um his appearance schedules now where he's just all of a sudden appearing day in and day out rather than every once in a while every maybe maybe twice a week he's appearing like three four times a week now so uh it's uh it's a bit of an adjustment he didn't look quite as great in that inning but with a runner starting on second base um it's as Cen said last night it was it's really really uh really just prove your medal uh the way that you can come in with a runan scoring position and get out of that inning scoreless it's a wonderful job and uh uh Mets would win it from there in the bottom of that inning after budo pitched the scoreless uh 10th inning so uh wonderful job all around from the Mets uh who looked great in this game uh it was a uh another big win uh for them uh they continue their uh their they rolling towards a potential wild card spot they stay in the running with uh loss thanks to losses uh last night to from the diving backs uh the Braves won but uh the Mets maintain their tie with them the Mets are still in the middle of their eight game winning streak season high and uh it's it's been a fascinating role uh down the stretch for the Mets as uh we continue to see if they can uh pile up the wins on route to a potential playoff appearance but uh it's going to rely on the Mets picking up some big wins uh making sure to win big series and uh I dare I say a little bit of luck on on the Met's part if if they get some uh big losses from the Braves and diamondx down the stretch it'll go a long way towards them potentially getting into the uh the playoffs but uh it's all dependent on their ability mostly we we have to kind of hope that the Mets are uh able to uh perform down the stretch and it's it's not something that if you're Met fan you have ton of confidence in but uh this team is consistently uh shined in spite of expectations being pretty low uh they just keep coming through and uh it it's telling that they're they've already exceeded last season's win total with a roster that uh did not Inspire nearly as much confidence um they've been coming through this is a a cohesive group it looks like they have jailed as a as a team as in in the clubhouse on the field um they look like they're just having a blast and every player when when they talk about this team they just say it's a lot of laughs they're having a lot of fun you know winning cures all a all you know all all problems that a team might have in the clubhouse um so there you know earlier in the year I don't think it was nearly as many like smiles and and high fives but they've just kind of developed into this routine and uh it's become uh uh for the most part A team that just can that comes through uh in big situations which is uh earlier this year you would not have said the same thing but it's it's been fun fun to watch down the stretch for the Mets uh we found out today so Jeff mcneel left last night um with a uh wrist injury um he was playing uh got got hit on the on the wrist and uh at first seemed like not really a major problem for mcneel he he had played through the inning uh but was uh coming up to uh bat the following inning and uh un fortunately it looked like he was not able to get by it didn't seem like a major injury you know he was hit by a curveball um that was going about 74 miles hour and uh it looked like initially like he might just have like a bruised wrist but um the way it hit him I guess must have been the issue because it was announced today that he had actually fractured the wrists um he's going to be out all season uh for the in all likelihood they're saying that the fracture is just something that he's not to be able to recover from um before the end of the year so it's probably going to be like a six or eight week injury and um you know if you know if there was any hope that he was going to be ready for the playoffs I think they would said something but they seem to be um pretty much on all in agreement that he's not going to be coming back uh before the end of the year and likely is done for the year that was Mendoza's words he's likely done for the year barring any kind of um incredible comeback from the injury uh but uh where McNeil goes down the Mets have to kind of readjust fortunately they've gotten great production from Jose glaus glacius had what again came through last night with uh an RBI double that scored uh Pete Alonzo uh and uh then came around himself on on another uh on another RBI and this has uh been the way that glaz just has just been performing and he's not just been you know a clubhouse character guy he's been a guy that they can rely on to come up in big situations not only in the field but also at the bat and uh he's having a career year he's his War performance alone shows that he has been uh every bit as productive for the Mets this year as Pete Alonso in fact even more so and uh that's that's telling something um he's become a a terrific 2-way player uh and uh it's been fun to see because uh I've I've really enjoyed it and the expectation I think is that uh the Mets are going to bring back a glacius no matter what um at the end of the season uh uh you know his contract is is up the Mets will have to work to resign him uh there's going to be teams that are going to be interested in the way that he performed um shined in spite of uh not being a part of the meth opening day roster but it's become another indispensable player like fenus and Lindor and uh the way he has kind of meshed with Lindor in the infield it's been really fun to watch two terrific infielders it's really difficult not to love the see that we also may not be um because they're losing Mets are losing a left-handed bat uh we may be seeing more uh playing time for Jesse Winker uh Winker has been coming through as of late he's been a great pickup for the Mets uh another good Clubhouse guy a guy that who has meshed really almost seamlessly into the Mets team chemistry and uh has not been a distraction he has not been a polarizing um uh personality in any way um he's come in done his job and uh really uh jailed with his team as well so um Winker has been a big part of it um him being the principal left-hand bat uh for this team Now with uh the loss of mcneel is going to be a big big test for him uh but I I enjoy what I've seen from Winker thus far uh we may also be seeing more playing time for other players like Tyrone Taylor um who may be who may be taking over um in right field Stelling Marte return from injury uh may require hand to be playing more than it was initially expected with mcneel and Marte uh probably taking over more of right field duties but um it's uh going to be interesting how to see how Carlos Mendoza does uh uh in the in the results of this uh injury is going to be uh uh it'll be it'll be interesting to see how he pivots and is able to play all these players together uh but um I have I've I've in very short order become a fan of Mendoza he's become uh sort of a stabilizing Force I don't think he really does anything um major in any way I think he I think he just he's uh his his moves just seem more often not to work and it's been lineup juggling it's been the way that he deploys his Bullpen the way he uh pinch hits and pinch runs and you know uh takes shielders in and out every move that he work that he does seems to kind of work after him and uh because of it he's uh become in very short order a a guy who uh people are starting to look at more and more as a leader a guy who could be a good manager um you know there's still questions about the way that he uses some relievers but I don't really look at it as being a major problem with him I think that's more of just uh the the cards he's been dealt with and uh he's you know the way he the way that he works and uses this roster um with its obvious Li ations and has and has helped propel them into a legitimate Wild Card Contender this season has been nothing short of a miracle I think he's done a terrific job in his first year as a manager it's always easy always easy to forget but we should always remind ourselves that he's a firste manager um he has had none of the same warts showing as other first year managers that the meds have had I.E you know Mickey cway and others uh who uh struggled a lot more in their first season uh with more talented rosters um the way that Mendoza has come through and the way that he has uh stepped up in what would have been a very difficult season really you know a lot of challenges he could have let this whole thing Fall Away uh the way that he kept it all together has been very impressive and uh I've uh really enjoyed meno's first year as the Met manager um another thing I never thought I would say early on this year thank you for listening to Mike Spence podcast please be sure to follow us on Spotify And subscribe to our YouTube
