Tonight, a man is in custody ending an hours long standoff in Broomfield that started around 630 this morning for a report of a disturbance. Over the next four hours, there were multiple shots fired and a woman was taken hostage and hurt. We have team coverage of the investigation and reaction from people in the area. I want to start right now with nine news investigates. Reporter Jeremy Ahola Jeremy home was a very scary place for a lot of people in this large dense apartment complex here. Let's go ahead and zoom in so we can show you where this violence erupted this morning. You can see one of three armored swat vehicles and just up to the left on that, right on the second floor of that apartment building there right at that balcony is the suspect's apartment. People here describe hearing dozens of gunshots between the suspect and police this morning. This all began when police got a call about a disturbance inside that apartment. When they arrived at the man's door, they could hear him yelling inside. They say he was yelling threats. They also heard a woman inside who was described as a hostage. Suddenly he began shooting not only at police but randomly outside, at buildings and vehicles, he hit windows and cars. Police characterized this as an active shooter. And then things evolved into a barricaded man with a hostage. Police initially tried to talk the guy out of his apartment with the crisis response team talking to the guy that did not work. So then after about three hours, they broke down his door, threw in some flash bangs and eventually they got the guy into custody and found one hostage inside. Yes, he did fire and it did hit vehicles, other buildings and other units. So this is going to be an active crime scene for a while because we have to process where those gunshots went. Look for any of those shell casings determine everything that may have happened. And so far police have not released the suspect's name. In the meantime, this really impacting a lot of people disrupting the day for a lot of people who can't get inside their apartments for more on that. Let's go to my colleague Rioja with that Jeremy. This crime scene is very much taped off. Police still haven't let people back in. There are crime scene, evidence markers everywhere. I just want to walk over here just to show you how far these bullets went. So the apartment building is all the way over there, meaning it crossed the parking lot across the sidewalk, there's an evidence marker, right down here and the bullet imprint in this car over here. Residents like Ben Bostrom say they usually feel safe living at Arisa apartments. I think it's very out of character for the area. This is normally very, very quiet and safe in my estimation. So you never know who you're living next to next door to me. I heard some loud banging this morning about almost seven P seven AM and I heard some screaming and yelling. I woke up the gunshots. Police got reports of a disturbance around 6:30 a.m. Eight AM is when neighbors say they heard the first round of 10 to 15 gunshots. This is my bedroom window. Heather Tallant lives in the building across from the crime scene. She was walking her dog back into her apartment during this first round, I could see straight into the guy's apartment. Thank you. And I was walking my dog and a lady came up to me and she was like, hey, do you know what's going on? And that's when a gunshot flew over my head into my bedroom window. I ducked and I've never screamed that loud in my life. There are bullet holes in the building across the way. There are cars with holes in swat. Officials started getting people out of the nearby buildings. Around nine, they came beating on doors frantically. I said, we're evacuating your building. You need to go. I said, can I put on some pants hours after police had the custody, the area surrounding more than four apartment buildings were taped off. I think there are about maybe 30 people here and a handful of cats and dogs and they were bussing people over in shuttles over to the community center with no access to their cars. Many residents had no choice but to go to the evacuation center set up by police. It's very scary. Still haven't said anything about when the people living in these buildings are going to be allowed to come back. Right now. The temporary evacuation area is set up at the Broomfield Community Center for people that might be coming back from work or school or wherever that might be reporting live in Broomfield RJ nine news and we see those, the crime scene tape and all those police officers still out there even all this time after everything ended. R Thank you.
