it's the full court press with Eric frankon and Jason Walker welcome back to the uh you know to the to the show that we're doing right now following the local teams breaking down the biggest games with in-depth analysis and team interviews there's going to be much higher expectation sense of awareness of what we bring to the table join the show by calling into 43575 21069 or text 435 33932 one it's the full court press touch I did it hello everyone welcome to the full court press Jason Walker Eric Franson with you here lot to talk about on today's show plenty plenty to go over it's a reaction Monday we're getting back into those reaction Mondays now that we're uh into know we're close enough to fall it's late August that's basically fall summer technically goes until I don't know September 20th September 21st so had the Utah State scrimmage over the weekend on Saturday High School football on Friday obviously a lot of those things heard uh right here or on the Cash Valley Media Group the family of radio stations including on this very station Sky View with their game against wasach and plenty of others I know I was at the Logan North San Pete game I was calling that over on kvnu and certainly plenty of others uh with Green Canyon Mountain Crest Ridgeline and others so very fun weekend of sports had a chance to obviously I had a chance to be involved with not only the high school but also I was able to be at the Utah State scrimmage I know probably many of you listeners were there as well there were more people than were at the first scrimmage there they not being a fair to compete with in the middle of the day uh certainly had a decent turnout there uh the play wasn't probably as good as I think people were hoping for I think the first scrimmage it was more exciting and probably better overall unless you're a big fan of Defense in which case you pretty much got what you wanted uh but go ahead if you guys want to text in your reactions to the scrimmage 435 339 0321 the number you can text uh but even aside from that there's different things that you me and Eric plan to go over on today's show uh we've got pick six results uh we did pick six we were able to string a couple these together now that we're both around for most of these days but just try to get things going here um we've also got a you know Utah State um just comparing how they rank among you know I know Eric was he was compiling the just some different one to 131 or I think maybe 1 to 132 however many FBS teams there are uh just full ranking all the college team where does Utah State end up there I wouldn't looked at the averages I I took some of the compiling heat I stole some of his work threw it into a spreadsheet I added another list of my own that I found but we can look at where Utah state ranks in terms of all 131 132 is FBS teams um and you know there's other other news as well you know Washington State their president uh he chimed in a long interview if you were a Weber State or I keep saying Weber State Washington state if you're a fan of them you gave a lengthy almost hourong interview where he's pretty open about all our options he does mention the possibility of joining the Mountain West so we'll we'll get into that uh Utah state soccer and volleyball getting their uh Seasons kicked off volleyball still unofficially because they don't play their first you know actual regular season actually counts game until uh Thursday I believe believe they played an exhibition this past Friday Utah state soccer going one in one uh by the way Eric how's it going ah great it's a Monday had to stall again for you uh it it rained just a minute ago here but it's okay I'm G start raining these taries on you I know I'm going start like stacking sticky notes over there I'm ital it was interesting uh so I've got a German who is living with us now a German exchange student and uh went and picked him up just last week and this morning I had to go take him to the school to figure out what his schedule's going to be and all that and we just got to talking about how things are different in our school system versus his where he's from in Berlin and we got on the topic of tardies like if you're late to school and uh he says that um he was fascinated that that tardies here in America will start to affect your academic grade and he said there it says unless you have a doctor's note then you have to go meet with a doctor if you are habitually tardy if you're habitually late you have to go meet with a medical professional to talk about why you're always so late like that's just an assumption that it's because there's something wrong with your health which can sometimes be a good like you know if if somebody's late all the time maybe you should ask like are you okay yeah I think there's some of that that goes on but then there are also the people who you know they're tardy because they don't care when I used to drive a bus around here and I can't tell you how many high school kids used to ride the buses at suspicious times suspiciously of right now yeah it's like I'd see didn't I see you yesterday at the same time not lunchtime because I think I imagine a lot of the high schools around here have like open campus during lunch at least that's how it was when I was in high school you could leave campus during lunch but yeah 9:30 is not the time I expect see high schooler on the bus but any anyway yeah so that's our conversation about tardy Eric so this going to impact the grade that you give yourself I guess yeah I'm I'm nervous about my Eric we need to have your my academic standing here on the full court press I might need an intervention yeah anyway so as I was saying plenty to react to lots that happened over the weekend the Utah State scrimmage probably the biggest you know obviously for this show you know football just Utah State and then Regional 11 we'll get to that in the second hour we'll also be announcing the bread and butter play of the game or we'll be calling for you guys to tell us what it is um you'll have a chance to win I believe it's four free loaves of bread from bread yeah from the Old Grist Mill and I can't tell you how difficult it is to say four free loaves of bread how many times I have to I try and say that on my own broadcast we call it out for uh Lewis's show and it took me like three tries on air it's like how do you say four I lit have to practice bit of a tongue twister there yeah it's it's it's deceptively hard to say now even if it is just a two-word tongue twister there so we'll call for that in the 5:00 hour probably right after we finish recapping all the games we'll call for that you'll have a chance to call into the show 435 752 1069 make sure to call that number don't call the text line number cuz we don't answer that I don't even know if we know how to answer that one but we do have the 435-7528 N number that you can call and if you w it last week don't bother calling this week because we won't give it to you yeah I mean you can give us the answer but then I'll say all right good luck yeah on to the next person yeah but it was an interesting week in region 11 uh football games it was an interesting weekend for Utah State scrimmage uh as well and um love to get your reactions if you attended the scrimmage on Saturday I I thought that there were moments where it was um more interesting and more intriguing than uh what I had seen the previous week and there are also moments where it's like ah come on it's what's going on here but it's always so frustrating and difficult when it's a scrimmage because you just don't know is that a problem of the offense or is that a problem of the defense uh of what just happened there I did see some more aggressive plays on defense than I saw in week one or I should say scrimmage one um I still saw some things that I liked about wide receivers and running backs but I think my my bigger questions still remain about the Utah State Defense yeah I think the defense really proved itself you know in this last scrimmage where they really held the offensive check in a lot of ways now mind you when I try and look at the stat and compare I I can't really do a comparison you know just side by side because there was a lot of goal line stuff and so the per yard average that I've liked to throw around the last few scrimmages you cannot use that yeah because when you're when they ran like maybe a third somewhere between a third and half their plays situations vastly different yeah inside the 20 inside the 10 they ran a bun and they barely ran goal line stuff in the last scrimmage so you have to kind of have watched it to get an idea and so I can see where it coming from where there's some concerns with the defense because they didn't generate any turnovers which pleased Gary Anderson and that his offense didn't turn over the ball although he did acknowledge like you know defense does need to generate turnovers that's the duality of of the scrimmage there um and then you know despite the fact that the defense even in the open field held the offense pretty well when they got into the Red Zone they kind of made it hard on the offense a few times there were a couple of oneplay Red Zone drives that certainly probably didn't please Joe cin um so even though they made it hard a few times I don't know I think one time they forced a field goal attempt uh out of like all the ones I can remember maybe there was one where they they were short or maybe a couple but for the most part in those Red Zone goal line drives offense scored it pretty much every time uh largely running the ball you know maybe maybe it took them five plays getting three yards a pop but they pretty much always got there in the end so that's a bit concerning with the defense but I think their positive was getting in the back field when they're kind of in the open field they you know if they were actually allowed to hit the quarterback we might not have any more quarterbacks yeah that's true so I me yeah okay that looks great for the defense but is that a concern for your offensive line I know that's thing is the offensive line and this is the second straight week where they've probably allowed too many pressures last week they didn't I think they had what four sacks but I thought they got short changed unlike five or six of them is you know depending on how you're you know how generous you want to be with how close the guy was uh to actually sacking the quarterback and where they don't maybe blow the whistle quite yet they were a little more generous this pass scrimmage and giving the the defense to sack so maybe balance that out but you know too much pressure on the quarterback both times and that's a worry with the offense you're replacing four starters now we say three of them have experience Moes meum and pulle but you know the offensive line as a whole just not performing right now I think in the Run game they're actually performing Pretty decently but in pass protection bit of a yikes and that is incredibly worrying especially when your week one opponent is a team that will eat offensive lines alive yes yeah even good ones uh a couple of texts coming through on the full court press text line some observations of scrimmage uh the entire Aggie football executive committee of the 5338 sports reeducation academy and think tank where the the title of this uh group keeps uh getting larger and larger but attend to the fun family scrimmage on Saturday here are some highlights from their report offense looked pretty good although they saw at least three bad snaps that's true there were some bad snaps there were fewer bad snaps than the first scrimmage though now mind you most of the bad snaps they're all come in from one player I am not going to name this player because I don't think they deserve to be taken you know acknowledge they need to get better I think they are getting better and they got better in this scrimmage yeah so I'm not going to hate on someone unnecessarily even though they've they've had some bad were a couple of bad snaps that's a good point though uh got to fix that also didn't see any Touches for tight ends they they had a few did the commission miss that did the committee miss that uh sort of I mean they did get some touches there was a big catch there's at least three receptions that I can remember off the top of my head one was one of the longer past plays of the game one was a touchdown in the Red Zone mhm there was one other Short play to a tight end it was at some point yeah the thing with the tight ends is just health and availability right now your top two tight ends were out yeah uh let's he was impressed with hillstead like his potential uh defense was okay although they could use some work on the outside Pursuit and coverage assignments in the secondary two or three plays where they lost a receiver completely yes yeah I think that did happen there was a bit of Duality there where there were a lot of times where they were right on the wide receiver absolutely glued to their hip and then you had two or three plays where was like wide receiver had his own ZIP code yes so a little ify there easiest throws of the day uh let's see however uh goal line defense was pretty good uh didn't see Switzer except for a punt play also saw vakauta and H M in walking boots that's not a good look little nervous about the kicking game but not cson ley's foot he booms the ball down the field without looking like he's even trying yeah so there's some injuries um for instance in some new ones you know Hol he played last time Brock Lane played last last time they were both uh out uh vaka he's he was out both scrimmages sturer is out both scrimmages Switzer was last scrimmage was in pads on Saturday I didn't see him play I was looking for him and I look for to I could find him several times I I looked out there I saw him I swear I saw him one time where I thought I saw him a number one Jersey on the defensive side a guy in p that's ANC Switzer right and then later I was actually trying to look for him again to confirm it wasn't crazy and I actually didn't find him because we didn't get there right as it started uh but I was consciously I couldn't tell you exactly when in the scrimmage I was really scanning the sidelines and who was on the field but I didn't see him in pads so if he played he played really early and they pulled him quickly yeah think I think I missed like the first play or two I was like two or three minutes late um kind of walking up right as they began their first series yeah we were roaming around checking out I had kids with me and the big German so he's not really that big but I had my German with me so we're walking around he's about as tall as I am so the little German yeah and uh GNA give him the whole 411 what American football's like so there you go so we were a little slow getting to our seats yeah but yeah it's it is kind of interesting I do have sound from Blake Anderson um and honestly doing these interviews taught me that I need a better mic cuz or they need to turn the music down on the field cuz you hear the music in a lot of this audio Yeah it's tough cuz they have us huddle right basically underneath where the speakers are yeah and about next to where everyone's having conversations around so I am investing in a microphone so so I don't have this anymore especially when basketball season comes up yeah cuz they do the practice interviews and in the background clang or swish if you want to be optimistic that kind of thing but here's uh What uh Blake Anderson said about the um just the injuries it was more specific to Hol and Brock Lane um just you know them being out especially because those two were around in the first scrimmage I just day to day some uh strange foot strains ankle rolled up in practice just not ready to go today we got two left before we got to play and hoping to have all those guys healthy but we got to be smart about how we okay well again like Jason I taught you how to put a buffer I did it for most of them I guess I didn't do it for that one but for most of these I added I just recorded dead air for like a second and a half so hopefully hopefully you'll get the most of these of these clips I actually tried yeah bottom line is I mean this is kind of normal uh course of fall scrimmage get guys who get dinged up this is a violent contact sport I mean it's going to happen but nothing that's like season ending um there seem like there might be a guy who uh maybe doubtful for week one but pretty much everybody should be good to go by the opener yeah I'd say the two people that I'd be worried about not playing week one maybe three I'd say sturer is your one guy that I feel like he may not play week one I'm leaning more towards that being the case the other two you're worried about is Switzer and uh uh vakauta MH yeah those are the two guys where they're kind of day-to-day questionable they might hold him out they might play him vak is more who I had in mind yeah and so those are the three guys to be worried about everybody else of course anyone's subject to be injured at any moment um but those are probably your three guys you're most worried about some of the guys you know sitting out a lot of the ends you know guys here there but you're mostly worried about sturer Switzer bakut you know most other people held out probably just mostly precautionary yeah yeah but I mean 5338 excuse me the Aggie football executive committee of the 5338 Sports reeducation Academy in Think Tank uh makes some good points uh about observations from the scrimmage similar to to my observations as well um that um I I continue to be impressed by rasul Fon I I think he's probably for my money that's your number one running back that's your starter yeah Briggs is still in there but I've really been impressed with fison yeah I think Briggs is is probably gon to end up the starter I think they're going to end up running three backs and then you know if if fison ends up you know continuing the you know great run of play we've seen over the last two scrimmages he probably elevates to being the number one back but still probably a three- running back room it's just somebody you know will have the most carries and it may not be Briggs like we were thinking preseason or Devon Booth I I I agree that I think fison may very well be the best back I said as much during the scrim was like dang this guy's playing good he might be the best back in the room yeah I I enjoyed watching um know Kobe Bowman good to see Kyle Van leuan out there making a lot of catches a lot of plays he was more active this week than he was last week v he's still a playmaker I mean he wasn't targeted quite as much but he still made things happen when he got the ball his Direction um but yeah I think the the wide receivers I'm I'm feeling really good about Utah State's wide receivers this year yeah they didn't star quite as much uh cuz there was you know for one not as much open passing uh did a lot more running especially when they're down on the goal line they like to run the ball in the red zone and goal line so there weren't as many passes um and there were a few overthrows and so the the top wide receivers who all put up like great you know stat lines in the last scrimmage didn't really do so this week I think cyan L is the one guy who had more than a handful of catches I think he had like seven or something like that yes yeah seven or eight and and a couple of really nice grabs but I still like what I saw from the from the wide receivers overall in these last two scrimmages so I think despite you know this this scrimmage uh being a little tougher I think there's more room for optimism but we'll we'll get to that in a minute we'll restart this conversation because we need to take a break and then come back and reveal number five on list of top 25 agies of 2023 we're into the top five we're going to the show from 5338 before his a report from the 5338 Sports re-education Academy says huge shout out to agie charie Hawkins over the weekend she became the eighth best female athlete in the world yeah great showing doesn't she have to be the greatest track athlete to ever come through USU boy probably up there she's up there she's got to be up there I can't think of anybody better off the top of my head so I I would have to think she uh would take the crown unless if you guys want to text and suggestions I uh have to admit my Agy track knowledge is limited uh agreed same so especially with the history yeah so uh we're going over uh the uh we got reveal the top 25 number five on our top 25 agies of 2023 so we're finally here in the top five so to help us reveal who number five is here's Hall of Fame broadcaster Al Lewis the Cash Valley media groups countdown of the top 25 Aggie football players for this season 2023 gets to the top group at number five is MJ taisi tesi 6 feet 235 a senior played one year last year after transferring from Washington at Utah State he's from West Jordan Utah and Alta High School number five on the list linebacker MJ taisi so MJ taisi certainly getting with the big boys here with the top five Utah State's top returning linebacker obviously transferred to Utah State uh right before the 2022 season so he spent a year with the yaggies uh only played eight games had a bit of trouble with injuries so he missed a few games especially toward the end of the of the season but he was still despite that was third on the team in total tackles with 69 had nine uh tackles for loss and if you go on a per game basis he was the leading tackler and best at getting tackles for loss so a very productive linebacker for the agies last season and certainly will be a big help for the team this year especially since a lot of the other leading tacklers are gone now yeah absolutely you're going to lean on his experience and his talent and as you said he missed a significant number of games last year with a neck injury and despite all that still had all those numbers and here's a guy who's going to Anchor a linebacker core that has several new faces and they need somebody with experience to get them in the right direction cors we had somebody in our panel who put MJ TFI as number one on their list um so he we all had him very high um and so that's what gets him to be number five overall but uh this is definitely one of the leaders of the team and certainly one of the leaders on the defense I I like his uh his quickness and his movement he's got good strength he just has a nose for where the play is happening and getting himself there to make a play to help that Utah State Defense bottle up the the the offensive wide receiver on a short route or uh you know line or ex me running back is trying to get through a gap in the middle but I really like the play of MJ deisi and this is I remember talking to him last year this a guy that was not used to being interviewed not used to being in a spotlight but he kind of moved into that role because of how he played and that's just going to roll over into a much larger role this year for him and the Utah State Defense yeah something when I've gone back and watched games from last year and even when I was rewatching games during the season just every time I'm watching a defensive snap over and over I just see number two sprinting through the line of scrimmage finding a gap not know sometimes he's shooting a different Gap to try and get into the back field and get the running backer or you know whoever's got the ball it's just always full speed getting through the line hitting his Gap hard trying to make a play every single play and so he's definitely one of the guys who brings it on the field every single snap you know doing his best to you know not just be a productive player but to be a real playmaker somebody who impacts the game and isn't just accumulating stats yeah absolutely so excited to see what MJ TFI can do for USU defensively this year he he will need to play a very large role for that defense with so many new faces but I believe that he can uh he wors number two on his jersey as Jason already alluded 6 foot 250 lb graduate senior the L backer position for Utah State MJ tii coming in at number five on our top 25 agies for 2023 all right we're going to take a break on the other side we'll continue our discussion of the latest Utah State scrimmage we'll hear a little bit more from Blake Anderson also had a chance to talk to a couple of players so likely I don't know about anything but pretty close so I put a bit of a caveat there yeah uh 435 339 0321 is the number to text uh 9315 uh talking about Kaylee Thatcher for track utas were talking about great uh track athletes Char Hawkins am I saying that or is is it Char or is it I think it's Char charie charie Hawkins she's a little I think a little before my time at Utah Stater maybe I wasn't paying attention if it was during my time hasn't been that long ago and she's from the Rexburg area I mean she graduated a few years ago so I just wasn't paying attention that was my problem maybe I don't know uh also 9315 texting in who was the MVP of the scrimmage for offensive and defensive to the best of your knowledge uh offense it's hard to pick one CU there wasn't really a you know superb standout on offense there wasn't somebody who just individually was great um you probably think maybe Kyle Van Leen rou fison those are probably your two biggest statistical producers um I'd probably go with Van Luen just because he seemed to be more consistent than anybody that's that I that's probably probably one of the top choices there defense there were certainly several um a lot of guys putting up stats I think enoa migal is that how do you say how you say his last name he's one of the guys we have sound for he yeah he had a couple of sacks I think three overall tackles for loss so he was spending a lot of time in the back field yeah but there was Cly others who were spending some time in the back field uh as well so you know plenty of guys on defense I think you go to but you'd probably just say the defensive line overall yeah Kean Sloan jumped up baded a pass down right at the line of scrimmage I was impressed with that I thought Simeon Harris made some great plays good coverage came in on some uh uh you know cornerback uh pressures to the defense to the quarterback as well was impressed with him um it's hard to pick a I think it's probably harder for me to pick a MVP for the defense um I thought a number of guys stepped up and played better hard for me to pick one guy that stands out above everybody else I I'd probably go with mow just because he had some of the stats and just you felt his impact you know all the time sure you know Paul fitzg had a pretty good day himself so I I'd focused more on the defense Ive line but obviously there there were a couple of you know good pass breakups couple of good plays by the secondary linebackers although again with secondary sometimes they just blew their coverage so yeah just there were some good and bad on both sides although I think the defense probably had more of the edge in this one just because they were spending so much time in the back field getting so many sacks they had 11 sacks overall so only although they only had two tackles for loss in the Run game so the offense is getting positive yards in the Run game albeit not much granted again it was goal line Red Zone stuff naturally lower per yard type stuff but they're getting yardage every time mhm except for when they passed they got stacked 11 times 11 times which mind you that probably if you took that away all those sacks away probably get a lot of that yardage back as far as you know in the Run game but I didn't keep track of that maybe I should keep because they the university keeps some of those stats and they send it out later maybe I should ATT tracked some of that myself yeah well I mean it's you you breathe on the quarterback and they call it a sack you barely get your hand on him and in a traditional uh game you might get your hand on the Jersey but you're probably not pulling the quarterback down um but in a scrimmage they blow the whistle if if you get close to them like that so there are a good number of these sacks that probably wouldn't have been sacks in a regular game but still it shows that that defensive pressure was able to get penetration and uh you know get access to the quarterback and make it tough where he has to speed up his schedule and where he wants to deliver the play yeah I know uh so we talked to inoko migal he was one of the players we singled him out just because of how well he was playing uh on defense um play a little bit about him talking about creating pressure there are a couple of different times he talked about it um talk about one where you know creating pressure through blitzes because that was one thing they kind of added in in this game or in this in this scrimmage it makes it a lot easier you know the pressure is cominging I think we did a great job pressuring the um quarterback you know having defensive end and D linan that can rush you know and bringing the pressure I think it just puts a lot of stress on the o line but overall the pressure and the sacks that we had today and the pressure we have from def line and secondary I think it was great the pressures that the coaches were calling were good calls yeah see there I finally I cut the clip there's like two seconds of dead air give me so proud of you but yeah so that that was one of the thing that something that helped them to create a bit more pressure because there were some you know corners and guys getting you know tackles for loss I think there was even a corner that got a sack uh yeah Simeon Harris you know one of the players that got a sack bar strong getting a sack as well well you know at the safety spot yeah that's I said one of the things I liked about watching Harris play he had a pass breakup and then almost like two three plays later he's uh putting pressure on the quarterback so uh really pleased to see that but like you said there were there were great moments from the secondary but then there were also times where they were confused and there were blown coverages and there were wide receivers who were wide open yeah and that that's something you definitely don't want to see now overall ex said even with that it did feel like the defense at least a little bit improved um obviously still some mistakes and obviously those those things were acknowledged think inoka brought them up but he did talk about how the coaches challenged them and they wanted to play better they kind of took the last scrimmage personally where there's you know comments floating around that oh the defense just got walked over at times and you know defense didn't take that lying down and you NOA talked about that a little bit uh I think today the defense did a lot better than last scrimmage our coaches last scrimmage definitely challenged Us coming out a lot more phys physical having more effort they challenged us last screamers they said we weren't as physical you know I think they expected more of us but I think the screamers came out a lot better and took the coaching personal and you know what I'm saying responded better than the last SC I think that overall we just had a better day of course we made mistakes and offense made plays but um overall I think we're going go go in the film room and get better take the coaching we made mistakes but I think overall today we had a good day as a defense yeah and I think that's the key is like overall good day on defense there are certainly things that you can pick on you know Red Zone not as good at forcing field goals you know when you get into the Red Zone you at that point obviously you don't want to let them score but at that point it's forcing field goals they didn't really do that um there were a few broken plays as far as just letting receivers be wide open you give up go some plays but aside from that you know wide receivers they were making some tough catches but they were forced into tough catches you know quarterbacks had to place the ball really well obviously the defense getting to the quarterback throwing them off schedule which then just makes things easier for everyone and just I think overall you can say the defense just had a much better day than they did last time out yeah you know uh coach Anderson talked a lot about fatigue again uh so I'm kind of scratching my head as to why we're hearing the coach talk about fatigue for two straight scrimmages um but it was middle of the day it's hot but you know what that's August I mean this isn't new it's not like this August is warmer than normal it's actually cooler than most augusts that that's cooler than last year I think I remember last was kind of brutal yeah it was very brutal and it wasn't even hot on Saturday no it was overcast we actually had a little light rain that came through very light but um it wait it rain during the scrimmage very brief it was just spitting it was in and out it was fast um and there was a breeze I mean it was it was warm but it was comfortable so I'm a little surprised that I'm hearing the coach talk about fatigue so much over these last two scrimmages yeah and that was something he he brought it up a couple of times unbidden and then I believe it was you who just kind of asked him about it and here's kind of his explanation just talking about the team being tired a little bit of why that was uh why that's maybe going on volume both this has been a really really hard two and a half weeks on purpose we got to find out what this group's made of uh wanted to see how they would respond today they have not had any time really to let their bodies heal and recover it's been go go go uh we'll be smart about the next two weeks but we had to find out how they would respond today and it wasn't it wasn't pretty but they did fight through and that alone was a little bit of a victory and they could have easily come out and just been lazy and sloppy all day long and they weren't yeah so this maybe a little woring I don't know are they just trying to run him you know run him ragged here in this this first little bit just to get him used to some of the riggers of the Season well my question really the way I posed it is that you coach you've said that you want to run with more pace so is this just a matter of the team kind of acclimating to that and that was his answer that's how he answered that question yeah and I cut off a little bit of that first part where he just says like speed and volume uh it cut off the little bit of the speed there but that's I can't wait talk about you know little bit of you know practicing with Pace that makes sense yeah but also volume obviously you're practicing you know not too many days off you get one or two days off a week I think have to maybe look back at their schedule but yeah a lot of you know a lot of speed a lot of volume getting these guys in shape especially because a lot of these guys haven't been in the strength Str and conditioning program for the they aren't used to playing this kind of style so they haven't been conditioned the way that they want them here at Utah State so it it's the pain they go through now will be gains later in the season especially fourth quarters when they're in games and close games and that's where they can have that separation so it's very purposeful um what they're trying to do and what they're trying to accomplish at the same time you still got to try to get everybody on the same page and firing on all cylinders yeah and we also got to hope that they perform under this cuz the point of you know playing with this pace is that you perform well in the fourth quarter and the other team can't because they're not they can't keep up with you that's the entire idea is that the other team gets tired in the fourth quarter and you don't right so if Utah State's getting tired like this that's not going to help of course it is a process you do have to build to it right so obviously this is just part of that where they're they're getting used to that and as you said you know pains now is gains later right and you can't have an offensive series that only takes 20 seconds off the clock either your defense will absolutely hate you yeah so it has to be efficient it has to be productive uh for both sides but um I I I felt like like last week after the scrimmage number one there was a lot of just kind of a feeling about football about this football team moments where I saw some deep shots downfield and wide receivers made some fun plays and I liked what the the running backs were doing but a little yeah disappointed in the defense and overthrows and things didn't didn't quite seem to feel like they were connected yet last week I saw improvements and I'm feeling better about this team moving forward I still think they have a lot of things to work on uh are they going to is this a team as I've seen in two scrimmages that's going to compete for the Mountain West Conference Championship no but is this a team that will be competitive in a lot of games and could be bold bound potentially I I yeah I think they're in the mix I I don't think this is a team that some of the preseason prognosticators that put them at three wins I I don't see that kind of a team yeah I I if I was reading some of the predictions correctly uh that I was seeing kind of over the weekend there were guys that had Utah State losing to New Mexico this year which I don't know I don't want to you know dance on that take too much lest we end up later in the season maybe Utah state does list New Mexico and it look like an idiot but there are some guys who are really pessimistic about Utah State just partly because they don't know anything about this team and we're trying to figure things out you know even when we're watching them we're trying to figure out what the heck's going on yeah on the coaches too because the coaches came into fall Camp admitting like yeah we don't know anything about these team yet we're going to find out in Fall Camp so hopefully 3 weeks and they know something about them um yeah I do think this team can be competitive it's just going to come down to how much does their inexperience impact them because maybe some that inexperience led to couple of those blown coverages couple of penalties things like that uh you know how much you know there's talk about you know all these guys they brought in all the toal you know like former you know P5 guys former fourstar recruits and this and that and the other you know all these accolades from when they were coming out of high school is that Talent actually there can they harness that Talent now they're at Utah State there's all these different variables that if they all go right this team goes you know 10 and two in you know Mountain West championship game and the bowl game afterward if only a handful of those you know variables go Utah State's way then yeah you're looking at three four wins you know probably four at minimum not going to a Bull game the more likely option is you end up somewhere in the middle of those two extremes and you end up around five and s six and six which is kind of why everyone's predicting Utah State to go five five and seven six and six because they don't feel comfortable predicting Utah State to go completely bad because they've typically not been that yeah and they don't want to predict them to be too good because there's no real indication that they will be that good barring l literally everything going right for the team yeah yeah just so many unknowns I get it I understand some national pundits why they would be sellers on Utah State not buyers so uh sorry I'm getting notes and messages from across the window one Studio got worked on today and ours didn't so they're very proud of how their studio is looking now lot of fun for them I haven't even really looked at that studio there no but I I could see how people from the outside not close to the situation would uh would be very down on USU that being said um I went and I had some time this morning while I'm waiting for my German to go through his like meet with his counselor at the school today so I just decided you know what what's everybody saying about the Mountain West uh we we got to pause you there because we do need to take a break so we we'll set that up as a teaser and we'll see if we get in before the end of the first hour here we'll take a break don't go away we'll be back after this it's a it's a The Dan Patrick Show Dan Patrick college football is playing a game of Risk in the United States where you you know Outlets that have tried ranking all the colleges one through one through 131 133 133 now uh so let's it was kind of spurred on by the athletic posting theirs today uh they have Boise State at number 26 the highest ranked Mountain West school and really that's tell me if you've seen anything different that's a high I've seen any Mountain West School coming into the season yeah I've you know I've seen boyc States usually pretty much always the highest in any list I've seen but they're usually in the 30s some are pessimistic and put them in the 40s uh 26 is quite High relative to everyone else yeah Athlon had them at 39 CBS Sports at 39 ESPN SP plus put them at 48 uh which is interesting is number two vastly different when you look at different uh rankings San Diego State was number two in some polls Air Force and others Fresno State uh in the ESPN SP plus uh but USU down at um number seven in CBS Sports poll number eight in the athletic and Athlon Sports number nine in ESPN SP plus yeah some they're all putting Utah State somewhere in the low 100 somewhere between 100 and 110 yes usually not going much lower than I think 112 although Phil steel he was super pessimistic on the agies had him 122 um only above New Mexico and Hawaii in the Mountain West so he had them way down there uh so but others are more optimistic usually having them above Colorado State Nevada usually ahead of col I already said Colorado State so usually in that just in the bottom half where they're hanging in the low 100s yeah today the athletic had them at 107 CBS Sports recently they had theirs at 4 uh Athlon this was in June so this is a little bit earlier that was at 102 ESPN SP plus had the aies at 113 but then looking at the non-conference I mean Iowa they're up there right I mean yes they're pretty close to everybody where they're going to be mid to Upper 20s somewhere Jam Madison preseason top 25 for Iowa yeah James Madison in the 60s some you know between low 60s to low 7s and that frange and then Yukon anywhere from 86 from the athletic up to 125 in ESPN SP plus yeah I've seen a lot of variance with Yukon just you know some see Utah state is better than them some not obviously James Madison they're pretty consistently 60s 70s I think maybe one of the lowest ones I saw might have been in the 80s but typically they're uh they're pretty well liked at least as far as being a midlevel team uh you know and above Utah State in a lot of projections yeah so if you look at just these r rankings and who Utah State's going to face and say the higher ranked team is going to be the favorite team in the game the Eggies are not going to be favored in very many contests yeah I think like four three or four games they'd be favored something like that depend yeah again depending on who you're you're talking to right and depending if you get any uh extra value for being at home yeah all right that'll do it for us here in the first hour coming up next high school football I'm Dan Patrick and this is above the noise to No One surprise the US FBA basketball World Cup team started out 5-0 in exhibition play the US is heavy favorite to win this the team doesn't feature the usual Superstars but the roster is loaded with talent that will make it hard for any country to match but yesterday's eight-point win over Germany proved the team is far from Invincible Team USA lacks size the Germans dominated the boards on their way to 21 offensive rebounds the US managed just seven even with basketball's popularity growing rapidly worldwide it's going to be tough for any team to take down Team USA Anthony Edwards is a lethal scorer jiren Jackson one Defensive Player of the Year and jayen Brunson looks like a budding star in New York but if we learned anything from the World Baseball Classic or the Women's World Cup the talent Gap is closing in all sports and if the team's not too careful a gold medal will be far from a guarantee for Team USA I'm Dan Patrick and this is above the noise
